Editor’s Letter Dear Readers, I hope you are all well. As you may already know, I am fascinated by the arts, so I feel extremely honoured to be in touch with the admirable artists who exhibit in our May issue of The Discerner. I am pleased to welcome Ian Carr, Simon Kirk, Thomas Strumpel, Stephen Schubert, Svein Koningen, Richard Whadcock, Victoria Ascanio and Scott McLachlan again, and to introduce Clare Danstead, Janez Stros and Hugh Chapman. These artists are all different, but equally gifted, and I am personally highly impressed by the work presented this month. I am sure that you appreciate their talent as much as I do, so you should not hesitate to congratulate them for their wonderful work. I am an accomplished pianist myself, but I have never been competent in painting, drawing or sculpting. Last Summer, during a lovely afternoon, while I was relaxing in the country side in France, I decided to have a go, thinking that it might actually not be too difficult. I proudly purchased a couple of blank canvas, some brushes and some paint tubes. I came back home, installed the canvas on a stand, mixed the paints as I could, took my brushes, and... I froze! I was looking at these blank canvas, being completely unable to paint anything. I had to go for it, and the result was somewhat interesting. They are hanged in my apartment, but please do not ask me to publish them! I obviously like them, but I do not think that my work would be appraised by any art collector, or any artist. I just felt that I should share this little story to emphasise on the expertise needed to create the masterpieces displayed in The Discerner. Let’s forget about myself now, and let’s enjoy the fantastic work shown in our May issue. In my work I combine painting, collage and decollage (cutting or sanding away the built up surface to reveal layers below). I free associate cut up text and images to create a self contained scenario with its own reality. I’m a big fan of haiku and the gentle playfulness that helps us view everyday life with fresh eyes.

Victoria Ascanio Victoria Ascanio was born and brought up in Spain. She Studied Fine Arts at Madrid University before moving to England. There she studied Printmaking at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford. She has taken part in many international fairs and exhibitions. She works in the painting, drawing and printmaking media.
