LIKE ME ALICE HANRATTY KIAN BENSON BAILES ELEANOR McCAUGHEY Saturday 10th February to Saturday 31st March Like Me makes reference to art-historical motifs such as classical portraiture and painting, elements such as the frieze, iconography, and newer processes of collage, assemblage and the digital deconstruction of the image. The works refer to the body and the human experience, through historical or contemporary lens. This is the third in a series of exhibitions which bring together artists at varying stages of their artistic careers. Alice Hanratty was born in Dublin and studied painting and printmaking at the National College of Art in Dublin and at the Hornsey College of Art, London. In the late 60's she worked in Africa and this was a formative influence on her work. Her subjects reference a variety of influences from medieval and renaissance 4

paintings and indigenous African wood-carvings. For this exhibition she has created a series of new painting works and a large-scale installation in the mezzanine of the Dock. She is a member of Aosdána, and has exhibited widely both in Ireland and internationally. Kian Benson Bailes, lives and works in Sligo. He alludes to discourses surrounding identity, its construction and deconstruction. He makes material and spatial interventions that reference the various narratives attached to ideas of authenticity, identity and the body. He is interested in the commodification of queer spaces and cultures, the presentation of these spaces through technologies, and how these juxtapose with mainstream heteronormativity and the unstable and transmutable concepts surrounding notions of identity and its construction. He has recently exhibited in Tulca, Galway and CCA Derry. Eleanor McCaughey lives and works in Dublin, Her work is an exploration of contemporary representations of portraiture, referencing the tradition of still life. The work juxtaposes past ideas of identity and power with new ideas, taking reference from elaborately embellished Asmat ancestor skulls, Christian iconography to the modern day selfie. Recent work has referenced from Adam Curtis’s 2002 documentary series ‘Century of the self’ which advances the thesis that Freud’s views of the unconscious set the stage for corporations and later politicians, to market to our unconscious fears and desires. Her work responds to ideas of self expression, the way we examine and present ourselves, attitudes to fashions and the distorting lens of social media. Eleanor has exhibited both nationally and internationally including the National Portrait Gallery London, the Royal Ulster Academy Belfast, and the RHA Dublin. WWW.THEDOCK.IE

WHERE WE ROAM GALLERY 2
ALISON PILKINGTON Saturday 14th April to Saturday 2nd June Alison Pilkington describes her art practice as exploring the idea of the psychological self and how this might be manifested through painting. Her paintings are quasi-figurative. Her recent body of work attempts to play with how familiar yet comic images have the potential to disturb or disorientate or perhaps be uncanny. She focuses on how imagery interacts with the intrinsic qualities of paint, how the paint material moves and how it can be played with. The quality of paint handling, although seemingly casual, is a result of repeated attempts at getting something 'right' She is a studio artist in Temple Bar Gallery and Studios.

MARCEL VIDAL Saturday 14th April to Saturday 2nd June Marcel Vidal makes paintings and sculptures. He graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2009. He works intuitively with a variety of materials, constructing distinctive sculptures, that often stage and frame his paintings. His approach to sculpture and its assembled chaos and combative insistence is strongly contrasted by his paintings made in oil and watercolour. Vidal's paintings are restrained, often withholding information, through rigorous cropping in an attempt to frustrate interpretation. "The convergence of these two modes of production and their aesthetic contrast is what interests me." WWW.THEDOCK.IE

Her sculptural assemblages and installations physically respond to the built environment. She uses ordinary construction materials which are re-purposed to create seemingly robust structures that reveal their fragility upon inspection. THE LOST BROTHERS Thursday 15th February 8:30pm €20 The past ten years of The Lost Brothers has disappeared in the blink of an eyelid. Their 2008 debut album, Trails Of The Lonely, was produced in Portland, Oregon, by Mike Coykendall who set The Lost Brothers on their singular path. For every subsequent Lost Brothers’ album (2011’s So Long John Fante, 2012’s The Passing Of The Night, 2014’s New Songs Of Dawn And Dust), attaining the “magic” has been key to its end result. So it is with The Lost Brothers’ fifth album, Halfway Towards A Healing. Recorded in Tucson, Arizona, at the perfectly titled Dust and Stone the album is another step on the right road. The duo performed here last year as part of Muldoon’s Picnic and were amazing. You can expect them to be even better this time (and to play for longer!)
