EDWINA GUCKIAN Edwina Guckian from Drumsna, Co. Leitrim, has performed and taught her steps all over the world, sharing the stage with some of Ireland’s most influential acts such as De Danann, Dervish, Beoga, Martin Hayes, Séamus Begley, John Carty, Máirtín O’Connor, We Banjo 3 and Eleanor Shanley. Her dance has been greatly influenced by the styles of dance in Leitrim and Roscommon and teachers Róisín Ní Mháinín and Pádraig Ó hObicín. She has been dancing for 23 years and teaching for 12.

LAOISE KELLY Laoise Kelly from Westport, Co. Mayo is regarded as “the most significant harper of her generation”. She has four critically acclaimed solo albums : “Just Harp” (1999), “Ceis” (2010), “The Wishing Well” (2010), a live duo album with fiddle player Michelle O’Brien, and “Fáilte Uí Cheallaigh” (2015). She has recorded on over 60 albums with many of Ireland’s foremost artists including The Chieftains, Christy Moore, Sharon Shannon, Dónal Lunny, Tommy Makem, Matt Molloy, Mary Black, as well as Kate Bush and American country/bluegrass icon Tim O’Brien. Her recent collaborations include a duo with Uilleann Piper Tiarnan Ó Duinnchinn, “Albiez Trio” - Cormac Breatnach & Tola Custy, Scottish Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes, fiddler Michelle O’Brien and double bassist Martin Brunsden.

CAITLÍN NIC GABHANN Caitlín Nic Gabhann from Meath, has toured worldwide with Riverdance as a troupe dancer. Her dance has been greatly influenced by the Clare set-dancing style through her mother Bernie. She is also an All-Ireland champion on concertina. Her debut solo CD release, Caitlín was voted the “2012 CD of the Year” award by tradconnect.com as well as being labelled the “top Irish traditional album of 2012” by The Wall Street Journal. She teaches concertina annually at summer and winter schools in Ireland, Europe and USA and has performed with the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, Paddy Keenan, Liam Ó Maonlaí, for Presidents and Royalty around the world, most recently at ‘Ceiliúradh’ in the Royal Albert Hall, London as a guest of President Michael D. Higgins.

LIAM Ó SCANLÁIN Liam Ó Scanláin from Glenhest, Co. Mayo, has been dancing since the age of five. Coming from a background primarily in sean nós, Irish and set dance, Liam has won numerous dance competitions including All Ireland and World Fleadh titles, and Corn TG4 2008. He has performed and taught worldwide and shared the stage with the likes of Sharon Shannon, Altan and Goitse. Liam is currently undertaking a Masters in Traditional Irish Dance Performance at the University of Limerick.

SIOBHÁN O MALLEY Siobhán O Malley is outgoing Director of The Dock and has been the driving force behind its consistently strong vision for artistic and innovative excellence, regionally and nationally, during her 10 years tenure at Carrick-onShannon’s unique creative hub. In addition to “Sokalo - Atlantic Rhythms”, she has also produced “The Pipes” in association with The Dock as part of its 10th anniversary programme. She looks forward to bringing these shows to international platforms in the near future.

reater Montreal dance company [ZØGMA] are taking a rhythmic and musical journey with Irish dancers Caitlín Nic Gabhann, Edwina Guckian and Liam Ó Scanláin and virtuoso harper Laoise Kelly bringing the intoxicating music and urban energy of their production “Sokalo” to the rural landscapes of the west of Ireland.

“Sokalo - Atlantic Rhythms” represents the gathering place, reminds us the happiness of reuniting and the joy of sharing memories with friends... Simple things of live that we tend to forget. In this powerful remix of their original production, the urban rhythms of [ZØGMA] meet and intermingle with the rural rhythms of traditional dance and music in Ireland. You are welcome to join the artists on this magical journey inspired by the living traditions of Ireland and Quebec.

Produced by [ZØGMA] and The Dock, with financial support from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Art Council and the Arts Council of Ireland, [ZØGMA] and friends will premiere “Sokalo - Atlantic Rhythms” at The Dock following a week long creation residency at the centre.

Background This unique cultural collaboration has its origins in the roots of the Irish influence on the music and dance tradition of Quebec, which can be traced back to the 18th Century. [ZØGMA]s’ interest in Irish dance stems from the links between their form of percussive dance, and indeed Quebec folk dance, that specifically traces its roots back to traditional Irish dancing.

[ZØGMA] Based in Greater Montreal, [ZØGMA] are a professional percussive dance company who are re-defining the limits of percussive dance. Inspired by the living tradition, they create contemporary work specifically focusing on Quebec’s heritage and cultural diversity, presenting a contemporary approach and a new aesthetic to Quebec’s folklore, merging dance, music and song into powerful rhythmic works. They have been performing and touring nationally and internationally since 2001 and now have seven productions and several collaborations to their credit.
