Since opening in 2005, The Dock has brought a vibrant and exciting programme of music, theatre, comedy, readings, exhibitions, dance, workshops and other events to Carrick on Shannon and the surrounding area. We have had the pleasure of welcoming some of the best Irish and international artists to exhibit and perform in the venue and are delighted to have consistently large numbers of audiences and visitors attending performances, participating in workshops and classes, browsing around the galleries, or socialising over a cup of coffee in The Jury Room Café. The success of the last ten years has been in no small part due to the support of Leitrim County Council that has demonstrated its commitment to the arts and the local community through their ongoing support. Their input, along with support from The Arts Council of Ireland, has resulted in a vibrant and accessible centre for the arts, recognised as one of Ireland’s leading arts centre’s that everyone in the region can be proud of and will continue to enjoy. Of course none of the successes of the last ten years would have been possible without the support of all members of the local community. Local businesses, community groups, theatre companies and individuals, too numerous to mention here, have been central to the success of The Dock. We hope therefore that you can all join us in celebrating our 10th birthday in 2015. We have plans for some very special events throughout the year. In this first quarter there are a number of events that form part of our yearlong celebration. We have special ticket offers available to you, our valued customers, on all highlighted shows of the January to April season. Have a look through the guide. We hope that you will find something of interest and look forward to welcoming you.

been nominated for two major awards in the UK, the Liverpool Art Prize (2014) and the John Moores Prize (2010), and it is no wonder. Thompson’s paintings are quite unlike anything else around: they are playful yet rigidly systematic, wildly colourful yet somehow restrained, hinting at both primitive and digital worlds. The title of the exhibition comes from evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, which is apt in light of what the artist says about about his process of copying and recopying as he paints. Thompson says, ‘I like to imagine all this is analogous in someway to the natural evolutionary processes by which living things are formed and consciousness is developed’. Jason Thompson lives in Liverpool.

A delicate Victorian sensibility is countered by a roguish punk ethic in a tough commitment to making, which also includes limited edition artist books, zines and garments. Jane

Finlay Macintosh & James King curated by Alice Lyons Finlay Mackintosh: Selected Everything Glasgow-born and bred painter Finlay Mackintosh’s life is given over painting. Using a variety of cameras (a Hasselblad, a Nikon, a digital one), Mackintosh explores Glasgow and sites farther afield (London, Venice), snapping photos to add to the vast collection of photos in his home studio. Then the work begins. Painting. For years, Mackintosh kept this up while working at a job; in recent years his art work has become full-time and all consuming. Frequent subjects are the park near his home in snow and summer (mostly snow). A beloved aunt’s sitting room and dinner table. His record collection and turntables. A toy train set. The trainyards behind Glasgow’s main station. Flower beds. A parrot in a cage. Everything. But selected by Finlay Mackintosh.

In this one day intensive workshop the participants will cover the basics of stop motion and cell animation. Participants will learn about the physics of illusion making and moving image works as well as gaining skills in drawing animation, stop-motion and object manipulation. The workshop is a short introduction to moving image techniques and will include the use of softwares such as istopmotion, premier and Flash. The outcome of the workshop will support the creation of a short one minute animated work with a sound track. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge of how to story board an idea and create a moving image optical illusion that could be the basis for a short film, music video or animated work. This is a very practical workshop but it will challenge the participant to create a future self directed project to be disseminated in the Dock at a later date in the year.

Ideally suited to music workshops, and accessible to any age group, the system features twelves electronic controls which sequence the playback of mechanically struck marimbas and chimes. Dodeca Cycle allows people to make intricate rhythmic and melodic music together without any musical experience. Workshop participants will be led through a number of exercises in order to familiarise

This years show is made in collaboration with tutors and students from St Clare’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton and the exhibition includes over 100 works and collaborative pieces. A number of different themes and approaches devised by the art teacher and pupils allowed pupils to work individually and to also collaborate on how the works might be presented.
SEAMUS DUNBAR: ‘THE LOST AND FOUND OFFICE’ 6th March – 21st March 2015 Séamus Dunbar is based in Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, where he co-founded the Leitrim Sculpture Centre. Concerning The Lost and Found Office the artist writes: “From October 2012 to February 2013, I walked the dismantled Sligo, Leitrim & Northern Counties Railway from Enniskillen to Ballysadare, covering approximately 50 miles (80 km) in 13 stages. The project arose from my interest in landscape and the phenomenology of creating and experiencing artworks, exploring walking practice as a primary tool in research and art making. The current work invites viewers to undertake their own journeys by drawing on personal memories and experiences while physically interacting with evidences from my walk.” (Seamus Dunbar 2014)

Dodeca Cycle
interdisciplinary senior design academic with proven experience at high-end education
“Dodeca Cycle” is an electronic and mechanical music installation designed and built by Ed Devane in Spring 2014. Ideally suited to music workshops, and accessible to any age group, the system features twelves electronic controls which sequence the playback of mechanically struck marimbas and chimes. Dodeca Cycle allows people to make intricate rhythmic and melodic music together without any musical experience. Workshop participants will be led through a number of exercises in order to familiarise them with how the controls work, fundamentals of rhythm, melodic scales, musical arrangement and dynamics. The group of up to 12 players will be divided into 2 teams which will look out for hand signals from the conductor / facilitator. The music will be recorded and archived on Ed Devane’s website. Max participants per workshop – 12 participants. 4 workshops will run 26th of February at the Dock. Workshops are accessible to any age group- groups interested should please contact Orla or Anna-Marie at Harnessing Creativity tel:00353071 96 20450.
