News from Artist Naomi Draper No. 2 - May to August 2016

Baby and Toddler Mornings at The Dock “We absolutely loved the workshops – simple, playful, sensory experiences for the kids that I would not have done at home, and so valuable to have a time for us all to play together..This is a really valuable thing to provide for families and there is nothing else like it in the area.” The Baby and Toddler Mornings at The Dock have connected me with an amazing group of children, mums, dads, grandparents and minders. Each session informs the next; a story, a material or an emerging interest from one of the children leads and directs my planning for the following session. I try to build a level of curiosity and intrigue that draws the participants in to explore and discover hidden surprises. I have watched very quiet shy children become confident and secure in this new environment. Parents have reported that the memory of what happens at The Dock follows the children home and is talked about for days following our meetings. As this journey continues, I am excited by the possibility and potential each meeting holds. I am interested in developing an understanding of the importance the environment and its structure has on a child’s development, learning and creativity. Processes included ripping, digging, wrapping, tying, printmaking and bookmaking. Initially my approach may have been challenging. As the weeks unfolded the space has become comfortable and everyone is at ease. I am fascinated by childrens wonder, excitement and decision making; the focus and presence the children bring to this process of working. I am looking forward to the next set of workshops and how they will develop in the coming weeks... UPCOMING BABY & TODDLER WORKSHOPS APRIL 12TH, 19TH / MAY 3RD, 10TH, 24TH & 31ST

Focus on Theatre Theatre at The Dock this Summer includes the premiere of a new work by Isolde ÓBrolcháin Carmody, an exciting new production by the members of Leitrim Youth Theatre Company, a night of stories and music with Brian Leyden and Seamie O’ Dowd presented as part of the Bealtaine Festival and last but not least and the return of an old favourite in the form of Lovely Leitrim by John McDwyer.

Mamó: A Story of Geraldine Plunkett Dillon SATURDAY 14TH MAY, 8.30PM

Written and performed by Isolde ÓBrolcháin Carmody Mamó: A Story of Geraldine Plunkett Dillon is a one-woman show, which centres around the events of Easter 1916. It brings a woman’s voice to the story of Ireland before and after the Rising, from stories of childhood in the 1890s to a young married woman struggling to keep her family safe and well in an atmosphere of revolution and retribution. Drawing on first-hand eye-witness accounts of the events of Easter Week, 1916, in Dublin, It speaks to the importance of telling and sharing stories of personal experience, and how these contribute to and diverge from historical narrative. This play gives a unique insight into the experiences and events surrounding the Plunketts, a family that was centrally involved in the struggle for Irish independence and the establishment of a free and equal society in Ireland. The poetic voice of the playwright is deeply influenced by the central importance of theatre and poetry in the lives of her great-grandmother, Geraldine Plunkett Dillon, (Mamó), and great-grand-uncle, Joseph Plunkett.

“These stories are the inheritances in which everyone has a share, and history is made up of a combination of all those family stories. My aim is to inhabit and interpret my own greatgrandmother and her stories to a contemporary audience.” Isolde ÓBrolcháin Carmody

SATURDAY 16TH - SATURDAY 23RD JULY

No. 2 - May to August 2016

Every July Drumshanbo plays host to the award winning Joe Mooney Summer School, a week long festival of traditional Irish music, song and dance named after the man who did so much to promote the cause of Leitrim and his beloved town. The committee continue to emulate his high ideals, endeavouring to promote Leitrim’s heritage of traditional music while handing on the best traditions of the past to future generations. Drumshanbo is a small picturesque town situated in the very heart of County Leitrim. The town takes its name from the Irish, Druim-Sean-Bhoth or “Ridge of the old huts”. The legends of the Tuatha de Danann recall the arrival of these magical people in a swirling mist on the nearby Sliabh an Iarainn mountain. They brought with them three musicians, Ceol, Binn and Téidbhinn - music, melody and harmony, whose legacy still remains. In addition to the classes and workshops there are recitals, ceilithe, lectures, and open air music events. The impromptu music sessions, the natural beauty of the Drumshanbo area and the traditional ‘ceád míle fáilte’ hospitality of County Leitrim provide an unforgettable week for all those who participate in the classes and also for those who just visit the town to be part of the experience. Working across disciplines and diverse materials Rose captures the obscure, hidden, unspoken or unwritten voices of history in what Walter Benjamin called ‘The Memory of the Anonymous’. It is by working with these occluded ‘voices’ that Rose contributes to and enlivens the historical record.

Hunters Moon Presents: Sacred Harp Singing Workshop with Cath & Phil Tyler

Creativity in Leitrim

A Celebration of Leitrim

THE DOCK, SATURDAY 30TH OF JULY, 2PM Folk musicians Cath & Phil Tyler will host a workshop of Sacred Harp Singing. Originating in the southern states of the USA, the name is derived from The Sacred Harp, a ubiquitous and historically important tunebook printed in shape notes. The work was first published in 1844 and has reappeared in multiple editions ever since. Sacred Harp Music represents one branch of an older tradition of American music that developed over the period 1770 to 1820. Shape Note Singing has been described as ‘uplifting’ and ‘ecstatic’. Being able to read music is not necessary for this workshop as you will be taught to read shape notes from books provided. This is a must for any fans of choral or group singing!

Cath & Phil Tyler MCGIRLS PUB, BALLINAMORE SATURDAY 30TH OF JULY, 10 PM Cath & Phil Tyler play Anglo-American folk music using guitar, banjo, voice and fiddle. The duo came together through a shared love of traditional narrative song, full voiced sacred harp singing and sparse mountain banjo. Taking a more minimal approach to their material than some, their music has been described as ‘a highly concentrated and intimate musical experience that penetrates to the very rawest essence of folk tradition’.
