The Would Be’s
8.30pm

Once championed by the late great John Peel, Morrissey and Dave Fanning to name a few, Irish indie outfit The Would Be’s flame burned brightly, but ultimately all too quickly in the 90s. Following critical acclaim and tours with Smiths’ legend Morrissey, The Would Be’s imploded during label wrangling, leaving a sense of ‘unfinished business’ that lingered for the best part of the last two decades. However, following a mention in journalist Tony Clayton Lea’s book, ‘101 Irish records ( You Must Hear Before You Die )’, the spark that saw the band knock on the door of international success was rekindled. They returned to the studio to re-write history and pick up where they prematurely left off. Having enjoyed the accolade of ‘NME Single of the week ‘ on several occasions, The Would Be’s know where the benchmark is set when it comes to delicate, intricate and on-thebutton indie pop.

Chris Kent & Fred Cooke
Chris Kent is one of Ireland’s rapidly rising young comedians winning the ‘Comedy Smackdown’ at the Galway Comedy festival 2010, and the ‘Bulmers Nuttin’ But Funny’ Competition 2009. His effortless and lightening fast comedy will have you gasping for breath while his combination of charismatic flare and comic timing packs a punch that will leave you aching for more. He wowed The Dock audience when he supported PJ Gallagher in April this year… one to watch! Fred Cooke is a familiar face from the Spar ads on RTE TV. He realised at a young age that he would never be a professional footballer and, in his teen years that Radiohead would not have him as their sixth member so he became a multi-award winning stand-up! He’s appeared in and written for a variety of TV shows, including RTE’s Republic of

A Christmas Carol
Sonny Condell, Philip King, Robbie Overson Some bands are destined to stay together and Scullion is such a band. Three decades on their signature sound is as strong as ever, maturing like a good wine, gaining depth and clarity. The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King have taken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson, who has ably filled the role of founding member Greg Boland. They’ve remained loyal to the band’s original vision; recasting folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour. It’s a vision that has yielded a catalogue of songwriting landmarks like Eyelids Into Snow, Down in The City and John The Baptist, that still form the backbone of their set today. A new album is being crafted, and some of this material will be performed live including a new version of Philip King’s “Fear”, and an instrumental by Robbie Overson.

Monica Corish workshop
A one-day workshop led by Kinlough-based poet Monica Corish. Slow Mysteries, Monica’s first collection of poetry, was published in June 2012 by Doghouse Books. She is also a trained Amherst Writers and Artists method writing workshop leader. The day will start with inspiration – a diverse collection of writing prompts, chosen to get the poetry juices flowing. From these first drafts participants will choose one piece of writing and spend the afternoon re-writing, refining, distilling: turning the rose-water of first drafts into concentrated perfume; transforming rough beer into smooth whiskey… While it is best to write first drafts by hand, participants are welcome to use laptops for re-writing their poems. At the end of the day, each participant will have brought at least one poem at least one step closer to completion. Payment can be made by cheque, or online through PayPal. To learn more, contact Monica at 087 641 4185, or go to www.monicacorish.ie. Early payment concession: €65 if payment received by Sep 5.
