NEWS
Call out to Schools for 1916 Projects Hugely important to Leitrim is the 100th year of the proclamation of the Republic. There are a number of national call-outs inviting young people and schools to get involved in the celebrations. Primary and post-primary schools are being encouraged by The Department of Education and Skills to develop ideas through oral history, literature, drama, music and art. To illustrate the changing face of Ireland schoolchildren are also being asked to trace their family tree back to 1916. Wherever in the world that might bring stories from, The Dock is keen to support schools to realise their projects in the theatre and community spaces here over the course of March 2016. For further details please contact visual arts and education officer Laura Mahon at lmahon@leitrimcoco.ie

Two new artists to take up residencies Hugh McGettigan and Susan Mannion have been awarded studio residencies at The Dock. These residencies are designed to support research and offer artists time and space to develop their practice in the privacy of their studios. The residencies run from late September for six months. Updates and news will be posted on our website. www.thedock.ie Hugh McGettigan has recently graduated from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire with a 1st Class Honours. His sculptural works create playful tensions. He is interested in materiality, sculptural equilibrium and balance. To date he has been working largely with readymade and found materials which show traces of a previous use. McGettigan’s work balances sculptural elements with delicate supports. This July he has been selected for The RDS Student Arts Award Exhibition. He has exhibited in galleries in Dublin, Sligo and Helsinki. http://cargocollective.com/hughmcgettiganart Susan Mannion is a printmaker. Her specialism is wood engraving, woodcuts and linocuts. She is currently completing a body of work inspired by the writing of Benedict Kiely. She is interested in extending the boundaries of wood engraving, embracing tradition, and giving it a contemporary twist. She loves the sensation of cutting through the surface of a block to leave a raised black line and the element of risk of working a negative image onto the surface. Mannion has been printmaking for a few years now, coming to the medium through textile printing and then continuing and developing the practice onto paper. She has exhibited in London, Dublin and in throughout the U.S.A. In September this year she exhibit at the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh. http://www.yewtreestudio.ie/

Sokalo Atlantic Rhythms
A stunning performance of traditional Irish and traditional Canadian Dance. With its roots in the history of how traditional Irish dance influenced the traditional dance of Canada’s Quebec region as far back as the 18th century, this world premiere will unite Irish and Quebecois dance traditions on stage for the very first time. After a weeklong residency at The Dock Montreal dance company Zogma will take to the stage with Irish dancers Caitlin Nic Gabhainn, Edwina Guckian and Liam Scanlon and virtuoso harpist Laoise Kelly bringing the intoxicating music and urban energy of their production ‘Sokalo’ to the rural landscapes of the west of Ireland. Produced by The Dock and Canada’s Zogma Dance with funding from The Quebec and Canadian Arts councils and an Irish Arts Council Deis Award, ‘Sokalo’ represents the happiness of reuniting and the joy of shared memories with friends. It is the urban rhythms that modulate to life. When the urban rhythms in Sokalo meet and intermingle with the rural rhythms of traditional dance and music in Ireland we expect a magical result. This unique cultural collaboration can be traced back to the 18th Century when the Irish community was already very well established in Quebec long before the mass influx of famine victims in the 19th Century. The Wild Geese, Irish soldiers who left to serve in continental French armies were given land grants in Quebec during the 18th Century. Traditional music and dance became an important element of the process of integrating with the francophone culture in Quebec. Group dances such as the Quadrille Françoise and the Saratoga, the Lancier and the Caledonia became very popular in Quebec during this time, these quadrille sets bore an uncanny resemblance to Dance in rural Ireland. Solo dances like the Quebecois gigue emerged from a fusion of Irish sean nós steps and English and Dutch clogging, and possibly also influenced by other cultures from South America where rational dances included percussive elements. We hope that you will be with us on the very special journey inspired by the living traditions of Ireland and Quebec.

This event is aimed at curators, art writers, and other artists and is led by artist Anna Macleod who will give a short introduction to her work which is currently on exhibition in the Dock. Her exhibition Water Conversations is a survey of over seven years work. Macleod’s work has been exploring and addressing the complex relationships between landscape and geopolitics, science and technology, culture and tradition. Booking www.thedock.ie, or directly through the box office on 071 9650828.
John McDwyer describes his new play, Turning Mammy, as a comedy with a few serious bits. Sisters Martha and Mary live together on the family farm. Mary is involved in a long term search for her baby who was adopted at birth while Martha is involved in a long term wait for neighbour, Ambrose’s Mammy to die so that she can finally marry the love of her life. That’s as simple as it gets, however, as we discover dysfunctional people with deep secrets and passions. The author directs Eileen Murphy, Valerie Traynor and Peadar Conway in a play with as many laugh out loud set-ups as moments of sadness. Bound to be another Beezneez winner.

Exhibition: The Past Presence
Jonathan Nangle, Aideen Barry, Karl Burke & Mark Garry & Crash Ensemble Preview Friday Sept 18th / Exhibition continues until Sat Nov 21st Featuring composer Jonathan Nangle, artists Aideen Barry, Karl Burke and Mark Garry. The Past Presence highlights The Dock’s culture of commissioning new work, and revisits works past and new interests as part of our 10 year anniversary. Aideen Barry’s new work Not to be named is titled after Dante’s reflection on monsters, as the ones “not to be named nor understood?” This short film draws us to question where the horror actually lies? Maybe it’s in the mountains of madness’s we have created ourselves?
Commissioned by The Dock 10 years ago Landscapes by Karl Burke and Mark Garry reflected upon notions of a specific place, its histories, stories and mythologies. It has gone on to be shown in London, Paris, Vilnius, New York and Sydney. This was the first film work made by both artists. Ten years later, we are re-presenting the work with new sound elements composed from field recordings and guitar. First and foremost a composer, Jonathan Nangle’s compositions explore many diverse fields ranging from interactive installation, to notated acoustic and electro-acoustic sound and improvisation. PAUSE is a new commission by the Dock in association with Crash Ensemble featuring the young Irish ballet dancer Jamie Haughton. PAUSE emerged from a short two bar phrase from Charles Ives ‘Concord Sonata’ (1919). The second work ‘(sighing): oh…but we were monsters’ was directly inspired by Alvin Lucier and is largely synthesised from sine tones through custom built software. The third work Breath is an Audio-Visual Installation producing algorithmically generated rhythmic sequences. Gallery Times: Monday to Friday 10-5.30pm / Saturdays: 10:00-5.00pm Image Left: Aideen Barry, Not to be named nor understood, 2015 Medium: Performative video with sound, looping, single channel. Since then, in a career spanning 40 years, Johnny’s has written songs that are sung worldwide in a variety of languages, thanks to the focus put on them by Christy Moore, The Dubliners, Mary Black and hosts of other Irish and international singers. His song The Voyage has become a modern classic.

What do we learn about ourselves from going to The Dock? What sort of performances, exhibitions and installations have you attended in the Dock over the past 10 years? Have particular moments stuck with you? Have you sat in the café drinking coffee and looking at the art work on the wall? What goes on behind the scenes? Rhona Trench, Chair of the Board will give a personal overview of theatre highlights over the last 10 years, and there will be a discussion about the many music and dance productions The Dock has hosted. In addition, Sarah Searson, Director of the Dock will present an overview of visual arts programming. ‘passionate one-man show… stunning.’ Ben Brantley, The New York Times
Underneath Sticks and stones didn’t break Her bones, but words and pointing crushed Her. Is Beauty really only skin deep? Does Ugliness hide somewhere deeper? This stunning new play is a blackly comic, rich and vivid tale of a life lived in secret, a testament to the people who live on the fringes, under the nose of everyday life. It explores the surface, and what lies underneath. Age Suitability: 16yrs+ (contains strong language and description of scenes of an adult nature)

The Nualas Lock up Your Husbands In their most dangerous show ever The Nualas break the mould they made previously with a deluge of new songs, higher harmonies, different keys and slightly shorter dresses, if that’s possible! And there’s more: Expect new Nuala revelations, harder laughs, slicker riffs, and even tighter foundation wear... if that’s possible! When this show previewed in Dolan’s of Leitrim, at least three Gardai and a relationship counsellor had to be called. As part of their ensuing community service (six weeks scooping out litter from the Shannon) the girls were obliged, as a warning, to call this sweltering new show, LOCK UP YOUR HUSBANDS. You have been warned.

From the decade that brought you jelly shoes, Pac- man, Mutant Ninja Turtles and E.T we bring you Ireland’s brightest composing talent. Ever wondered what it would be like to hear work by a young Beethoven or Philip Glass as it happened? This is classical music from here and now - from Irish composers in their 20’s and early 30’s. Born in the 80’s features works by Barry O’Halpin, Ben Schlepper-Connolly, Amanda Feery, Emma O’Halloran and the world premiere of ‘Pause’ by Jonathan Nangle, which was commissioned by The Dock for Crash Ensemble with funding from The Arts Council. WHATS ON IN LEITRIM
Leitrim Sculpture Centre SUSANNE BOSCH (Artist in Residence)
Friday 11th Sept to Thursday 1st Oct / Opening Friday 11th Sept 5- 8pm Bosch works predominantly on questions that tackle creative arguments around ideas of democracy. Recurring themes in her practice are surviving, money and work, as well as migration, societal visions and participation models. Bosch’s socially engaged project Alternative Leitrim (working title) - raises the question of the good life - for everybody. In developing the project from August 5th to September 11th Bosch hopes to meet, in Manorhamilton and its extended surroundings a number of initiatives that are exploring sustainable and innovative models of living and working. The artist is interested in the growing movement of people who work with very diverse and limited means on the common good and who wish to network more or realise new potential by engaging with the project. If you are developing sustainable or alternative models of practice and wish to meet Susanne please e.mail office@leitrimsculpturecentre.ie Susanne Bosch is an artist and teacher. From 2007-2012, she developed and led the Art in Public master programme at the University of Ulster in Belfast together with Dan Shipsides. Before she worked as assistant professor at the international master programme “Public Art and New Artistic Strategies” at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. She achieved a PhD about her public artwork in 2012.
JESSICA LLOYD-JONES (Artist in Residence)
56
Merging art, science and technology, Lloyd-Jones investigates concepts of energy and natural phenomena through the experimental use of materials and creation of light based sculpture and installations. Working across a range of media, she explores the boundaries between science fiction and science fact to reveal new perspectives on the world in which we live. Jessica Lloyd-Jones is a visual artist based in North Wales, with a First Class Honours degree in Fine Art and MFA in Sculpture from Edinburgh College of Art in 2007. Lloyd-Jones’ residencies have included an International Visiting Artist Fellowship in 2008 at UrbanGlass, New York, where she developed her ‘Anatomical Neon’ sculptures inspired by biological electricity and more recently, a Makers Using Technology residency at PDR (National Centre for Product Design and Development Research) Cardiff, 2014.
Friday 13th Nov to Thursday 26th Nov / Opening Friday 13th Nov5pm- 8pm Gavin Porter won the first prize in the North West Summer Open at LSC in 2014. By applying simple linear, often repetitive drawing techniques in an indeterminate way, Porter’s current work endeavours to reveal patterns and forms amongst the seemingly unpredictable and chaotic. Each work on paper is executed with intricate detail and employs optical techniques referenced from historical engraving. Central to these observations lies a fascination with science and the mechanics of nature, entropy, erosion and evolution. Gavin Porter is a Belfast born Artist living in County Roscommon. Having worked as a stone mason and organic gardener for many years, he returned to full time artistic practice in 2007. His artistic output consists of drawing, etching, sound installation and assemblage, with etching being his main medium of choice. He achieved a first class Honours Degree from Sligo IT in 2013 .
