THE EMERGENCY

They’re all mad as hell & they’re not going to take it anymore! Funny question; what do two comics, a professional political mynah bird, an award winning actress turned author and two of Ad land’s brightest and best got in common? Straight answer – they’re all mad as hell, and they’re not going to take it anymore. In a nutshell, that’s the make up and manifesto of The Emergency, a group of six satirists who bring the lash to bear on the powers 4

that be, shady cabals and those who seek power for themselves in their acclaimed live performances. In the lineage of Hall’s Pictorial Weekly and Scrap Saturday, The Emergency offers a welcome antidote to the increasing doom and gloom propagated on our beleaguered island nation by a dismal leadership (and its prospective replacement!) DECADENT THEATRE presents

THE QUARE LAND by John McManus The Quare Land will readily remind audiences of John B. Keane

A parable of the Celtic Tiger, The Quare Land examines motivation, greed and money in a humourous, caustic and incisive way. Set in a house in Bawnboy, Cavan, The Quare Land centres on the character Hugh Pugh (Des Keogh), who is about to take his first bath in four years. His bathing is disturbed by Rob McNulty (Fair City’s Frank O Sullivan), a developer from Ballinamore in Leitrim wanting to buy a field. Hugh conducts negotiations from his bathtub and is reluctant to sell while McNulty pulls out all the stops to complete the sale. The quick fire banter between the two characters escalates into an epic finale as both try to reason each other into submission. The show sold out a two week run at the Galway Arts Festival 2010. Best of ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Straight from Berlin to Leitrim

The poetry film is as old as film-making itself. It brings together two art forms that could not be more different – poetry films combine the soundworlds of the art of words with the visual power of cinema. The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival, a project initiated by Literaturwerkstatt Berlin, has established itself as an international forum for short films whose subject is poems, whether in their content or form or their aesthetic approach. Since 2002 the festival takes place every two years in Berlin and presents a wide range of films – from animated to experimental films, from video to media art. This programme will showcase a selection of the festival’s most interesting films from the last few years. The programme is presented by Juliane Otto of Literaturwerkstatt Berlin. LEITRIM YOUTH THEATRE COMPANY presents RED RED SHOES by Charles Way directed by Catherine Simon

10

Red Red Shoes is based on the well known tale by Hans Christian Andersen using various theatrical devices and art forms. It explores the inner world of a traumatised child fleeing from war in Eastern Europe and powerfully dramatises a life and death conflict. The story is told through soul-searching honesty and will capture your attention like few plays do. Franvera, a young girl at the heart of this play, barely sees the war clouds gathering as she single-mindedly pursues her dreams. Forced to flee from her village this heart-wrenching tale takes us to places of hope and renewal where the dance of life and the dance of death are counterpoised in a search for redemption. Directed by Catherine Simon.

LANE PRODUCTIONS presents

THE PARTING GLASS by Dermot Bolger The boom and bust story of the nation

Shot through with caustic wit and sharp home truths, ‘The Parting Glass’ is an examination of Ireland over the past two decades, and Thierry Henry’s left hand! In 1990 Dermot Bolger’s play ‘In High Germany’ astutely and angrily captured the mood of a pre-Celtic Tiger generation forced to emigrate due to economic necessity. It used the motif of soccer and the story of the Irish team’s success in Euro ‘88 to tell the life stories of three friends up to the point where they emigrate from an Ireland on the edge of financial collapse. Now in his new standalone play, which also works as a sequel, these characters are re-united in Stade de France on Nov 18th 2009 for the World Cup play-off. If ‘In High Germany’ was an odyssey through the foreignness of Germany, ‘The Parting Glass’ is an odyssey through the foreignness of the Ireland that emerged in their absence, the boom and bust story of the nation that had room for them, and the story of old friends on the cusp of fifty stopping to make sense of their lives, loves and losses, to try and fathom their place as exiles and to take stock of their futures. Starring Ray Yeates, directed by Mark O’Brien with set design by Robert Ballagh. 14

Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth a5 billion a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, for 2009 is a75 million, that’s about a1 euro a week for every household. So, at the end of your next inspirational encounter with the arts, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at

The Corn Mill Theatre Group present The Beauty Queen of Leenane Written by Martin McDonagh

The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a macabre yet funny tale of two women who find themselves victims of their cultural isolation and existential loneliness. The play takes us to a solitary cottage in the village of Leenane, Western Ireland, where Maureen, a rather plain woman of about forty, and her seemingly senile mother Mag, live their days in a never ending battle with one another. Maureen’s selfish yearning to marry and be rid of her wretched lifestyle provokes the worst of her mother’s own egotistical and childish behavior. This dark comedy brings a realistic yet electrifying conflict to the stage and allows the audience to participate in a chilling laugh as they watch a relationship unravel and move towards a disastrous end. Cast: Maura McGuinness, Deirdre O’Reilly, Seamus O’Rourke & Charles McGuinness Directed by: Killian McGuinness
