IT Sligo: Gathering Momentum Art Department, IT Sligo, at the Dock

The Art Department at the Institute of Technology, Sligo are delighted to be returning to The Dock with an exhibition of selected works from this year’s graduating art students. Each June final year BA (Hons) Fine Art students mount an exhibition of their work on campus at IT Sligo to demonstrate the breadth of their capability, knowledge and achievement. This year’s graduates are greatly looking forward to the opportunity of presenting selected elements of their final year shows in The Dock’s beautifully restored 19th century building and its dedicated gallery spaces. The exhibition presents an eclectic mix of formal and conceptual concerns expressed through a wide range of art practices. Though diverse in its parts the exhibition coheres on a level of artistic focus and ambition and provides a wonderful opportunity to view and engage with the work of students just emerging into a vibrant Irish art scene.

LEITRIM SCULPTURE CENTRE

Carrick-on-Shannon Children’s Literature Festival The second annual Carrick-on-Shannon Children’s Literature Festival takes place in The Dock and other venues in Carrick on Shannon from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th August 2013. The festival aims to provide accessible high quality opportunities for children and young people to engage with the arts. While most events are aimed at young people between the ages of 4 and 14 years, we have a special programme for young people between the ages of 14 and 18 who have started to write themselves. We will publish a book of these pieces which will be selected by Helen Carr, editor with O’Brien Press and Anna Carey, author of ‘The Real Rebecca’. Anna and Helen will also run a two day writing and publishing course for young authors. The festival is perfectly timed to give young people a fantastic weekend before the school year starts again. For these couple of days we are very excited to have brought readings, workshops and activities. Among those participating are Oisín McCann and Erica McCann, Sarah Webb, Debbie Thomas and the ever popular Gerry Boland. While many of the events during the Festival are free of charge, booking in advance is essential for almost all events whether a charge applies or not. Please note that all workshops are limited to a maximum of 12 young people so early booking is highly recommended. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. For further information go to www.leitrimarts.ie and to make bookings, please contact The Dock, Carrick on Shannon on 071 96 50828.

Our aims are not only to promote & encourage local and national, amateur/professional & multicultural talent in all its diverse forms, but particularly to facilitate free performance space and therefore inspire communities to embrace & celebrate the wealth of talent that exists all around them.
