Gare St. Lazare Players Ireland present THE END by Samuel Beckett
Crucial Reggae vibes and soulful sounds
followed by post show Q&A with Conor Lovett “It is, as ever, a towering achievement of acting and directing.” Sunday Independent
The BaRLey MOB are a 7 piece group hailing from Ireland, whose collective influences have fused to create a unique style of music. Described as one of the hardest working bands in Ireland, they bring a fresh blend of uplifting music to their listeners, embellished and delivered with equal measures of rock riffs, soulful melodies, folk jigs and infectious beats. This is “Everybody’s Music” relevant to all of its listeners, spreading a message of positivity. Born from days of economic uncertainty and personal obstacles, The BaRLey MOB have set out to entertain, move and relate to their listeners. Through energetic and electric live shows they leave the crowds feeling as though they were involved in something special. Anthems such as “Never be lost” and “Everybody’s’ Music” tell the story of the importance of music in our lives, while a crowd favourite, “Stand Up, Rise Up”, urges us all to stand up and be counted amongst our peers. ‘A LIGHT IN THE DARK’ House Party
The End is a short story by Samuel Beckett which he began in English and finished in French. In it a man recounts an episode late in his life when, having been expelled from an institution of care, he finds his own way in the world. He meets a variety of characters and situations before finally lying down to let life ebb away. It is one of Beckett’s most complete, most compelling and most beautiful works and is a Gare St Lazare favourite. Directed by Judy Hegarty Lovett and performed by Conor Lovett. Gare St Lazare’s unique and simple approach to the work of Samuel Beckett, Herman Melville, Conor McPherson and Michael Harding has been acclaimed internationally for its freshness and accessibility and their Beckett work in particular has turned a whole new audience onto the sublime work of an Irish writer that has had a profound impact across theatre, music, literature and film. They have performed their work all over Europe and the USA and as far afield as China, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, India, Argentina and Israel.

Leitrim Live Music Club presents LAU
‘Quite frankly, the best band in the world right now’ Channel 4
In 2004, sat around a kitchen table in Edinburgh, Lau took their first musical steps. Now, to have achieved so much, in so few years, is staggering. The warmth and excitement they generate with each new release, and at every live gig, has culminated in armfuls of plaudits, including three consecutive ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards from 2008, to 2010. In front of an audience the trio is renowned for scaling new musical heights, their seemingly telepathic musical communication fusing ten minute epics with the full spectrum of emotions. Their talents are such that MOJO magazine commissioned them to record a version of ‘Dear Prudence’ for a Beatles related cover mounted CD. Featuring guitarist and singer Kris Drever from Orkney, who also performs with Kate Rusby; fiddler and composer, Aidan O’Rourke, a founder member of Blazin’ Fiddles, who has also performed with Eddi Reader, Brian Finnegan and jazz artist Andy Sheppard; and accordionist Martin Green, who has toured in the bands of Eliza Carthy, Joan Baez and many more. Support by Carrick-on-Shannon singer, songwriter and guitarist Brían Farrell, who is due to release his debut EP this year. Friday 30th & Saturday 31st March 8.30pm €10/€8

An acoustic evening with MARTIN CONNOLLY, EILEEN O’ BRIEN & DEIRDRE MCSHERRY
Martin Connolly is a highly regarded accordion maker, musician and teacher from Killaloe, Co. Clare, who grew up steeped in traditional music. Music sessions were commonplace in the Connolly household, with names like Paddy O Brien, Joe Burke and Charlie and Ben Lennon regular visitors. The connection between the Connolly and O’Brien families stretches back two generations. Eileen’s grandfather Dinny O’Brien was a frequent visitor to the Connolly household and subsequently Martin’s brother Seamus and Eileen’s father Paddy joined forces to record one of Ireland’s most acclaimed duet albums, “The Banks of the Shannon”. Having played music together for many years, Martin and Eileen have a mutual understanding and appreciation of each other’s musical style and also possess the common bond of being influenced by Paddy O’Brien. The result is a wonderful classic duet of fiddle and accordion and they will be accompanied for this gig by Deirdre McSherry, from Tipperary, who has also been influenced by the O’Brien musical heritage. In AWA workshops, suitable for both beginners and experienced writers, participants write in response to prompts designed to set ink and imagination flowing. For further information go to www.monicacorish.ie or www.amherstwriters.com. 10.30am – 1.30pm €15 SATURDAY 19TH MAY CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP WITH ROBYN ROLAND Slán abhaile. Leaving home - finding home. Writing out the experience of exile, emigration, immigration and belonging. This workshop considers the histories of emigration and immigration. It covers the meaning of land, people and spiritual practice and what those losses involve, particularly the loss of language. Experiences involved in arriving in a new land are considered, and firmly relate to the reasons for departure. Memory, stories, song carry the past, and we consider how this happens. The workshop will involve a talk by Robyn and discussion of her work as an example of the experience of a third generation Irish Australian and that of other poets/writers such as Eavan Boland and Vincent Buckley. She will guide you through the particulars of writing, a meditative moment and the creation of a piece of work, followed by detailed feedback. Each participant 21
workshops& classes is given notes to keep relating to the topic, as well as copies of Robyn’s or other poems which exemplify the theme. It is useful if participants bring an item relating to the topic, e.g. photos, a piece of lace, music, trinkets, which they can use in an experiential moment within the workshop. Suitable for poetry and prose writers, both beginners and more experienced. Dr. Robyn Rowland has published nine books, six of poetry. She is winner of, among others, the Writing Spirit Poetry Award, Ireland 2010. She has created two CD’s: Off the tongue and Silver Leaving - Poems & Harp with Irish harpist Lynn Saoirse. She is an Honorary Fellow, School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne, Australia.

SPLÓDAR presents SIVE
8.30pm €15/€12
by John B Keane. Directed by Prin Duignan
Described as a piece of theatrical magic, Keane’s Sive has consistently lit up Irish and world stages since it was first produced in 1959 and characters such as the innocent young girl Sive, the scheming Mena and the ruthless Tomáisín Seán Rua are as recognisable today as they were back in the fifties. Keane brings his genius to bear on the story in language of sublime lyricism and his introduction of the traveller Pats Bacach and his balladeer son Carthalawn is one of the most imaginative devices in modern Irish drama . Splódar are proud to present this great play in this, the tenth anniversary of the author’s death. Sat 24th March

THE WOODY PINES
Last time North Carolina band Woody Pines toured over here as a trio, reviewers unanimously declared them to be one of the most entertaining acts on the Americana circuit. Now, as a four-piece, and with a brand new album to promote, the band is promising once more to deliver what The Scotsman declared was “a rollicking and engagingly idiosyncratic” show. Front man Woody’s impeccable playing combines with slide guitar, slap bass, percussion and occasional clarinet, and they all sing and make what Maverick magazine described as “an intoxicating blend of rural and urban stringband, country blues, ragtime and jug band music”. Billy Joe Shaver, the top gun Outlaw Country legend described by Willie Nelson as “possibly the best songwriter alive today,” declared: “They’re the best damn band I’ve ever heard!” 8.30pm €15/€12 Sunday 6th May Family Ticket €40 (2 adults and up to 3 children)
THE FOGHORN STRING BAND
Ass- kickin redneck stringband music! Following their incredible duo and trio performances in the Glens, The Foghorns return with the full five- piece line up. Their sound could have come barrelling through the grille-cloth of those big console radios in the living rooms of the 1950’s, when the traditional sounds of rural America were still on the minds of young musicians transferring the old-time music to a distinctively modern age. Their tight instrumental work and line-up fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass and guitar - is reminiscent of early bluegrass, but their powerful approach is whole-heartedly old-time, centered largely by the fiddle.

SHIRO MASUYAMA
Sligo County Council Residency Exhibition - Fred Conlon Award, Opening reception Fri 4th May. Show runs until 24th May. Masuyama studied architecture at Meiji University, Kawasaki, Japan where he became interested in the intersection of architecture and art. Often placing works in public and city spaces Masuyama reads the context of the site using architectural techniques and uses popular motifs and images to draw the attention of passers by. Masuyama’s work has been described as ‘interventionist’ and ‘interactive’ as he aims to draw the attention of people who have no prior connection to the world of art. He describes his work as four-dimensional and only complete when those who view it become involved as this ‘fourth dimension’ and an integral part of the work.
