Fred Cooke & Eric Lalor

“High octane, manic brand of surreal genius”

Fred Cooke is no stranger to Carrick audiences and is a familiar face from the series of recent Spar ads on RTE TV. He has contributed to a variety of successful Irish TV shows, both as a writer and performer, including RTE’s Republic of Telly, The Cafe (as The Crazy Chef), Watch Your Language (The Mad Professor), The Savage Eye, The Modest Adventures of David O’Doherty and The Liffey Laughs. Fred has frequently been invited to perform at the largest and most successful festivals both here and abroad, including the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Comedy Festival, the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The reason he has performed at so many high profile festivals and now in Carrick is that he is funny, very funny indeed. “comedy genius; he has so much energy that he could power a small village in the west of Kerry” The Laughter Lounge Eric Lalor’s introduction to comedy was starring in Des Bishop’s Joy in the Hood. Since then he has gone from strength to strength and is one of the most in-demand headliners in the country. Now a regular at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Comedy Festival, and many other major comedy events in the country, Eric has appeared this year on RTE’s Republic of Telly and his reputation continues to grow. An intimate evening with one of Ireland’s best-loved artists

When Nanci Griffith called Frances Black “the sweetest voice of Ireland,” she was paying tribute to someone who has been one of Ireland’s best-loved and most enduring artists since the late 80s, with a string of best-selling albums, awards and other accolades behind her. The extent of Frances’ popularity and talent has been reflected in the awards and accolades that she has received for her albums and live performances. She has twice been the recipient of one of the highest honours in Irish music, the prestigious Irish Recorded Music Association’s Best Irish Female award, and was also delighted to receive a National Entertainment Personality of the Year award, as it has always been vitally important to her to connect with her audiences during a performance. ‘If someone told me about a new trio comprising Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford, and John Doyle, I would have replied: keep dreaming. Yet that’s exactly what we have: a dream team made real’. Earle Hitchner, Irish Echo, The Wall Street Journal 8

This tour, featuring three giants of the Irish trad scene, promises to be one of the musical highlights of 2012. Where to start? One of the most important Irish musicians of his generation, fiddler Martin Hayes teams up with virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Kevin Crawford (Lúnasa) and Dubliner John Doyle (ex-Solas) whose filigree finger-picking guitar style is the perfect foil for the understated mastery of Hayes and Crawford. And did we mention Doyle’s tenor vocals and crack bouzouki and mandolin playing? Simply unmissable. Friday 27th January

Grenades by Tara McKevitt Enthralling… heart-wrenching

Northern Ireland, 1979: Nuala Kelly takes no prisoners. A tough nine-yearold living with her mother, brother and grandfather, she thinks the class bully is just a big baby, and that all the nuns are cranky old wrinkledup cronies. She loves Thin Lizzy and The Undertones - just like her big brother, Oran. He’s fifteen and thinks he’s Casanova. Nuala thinks he’s more like Jesus; she’d do anything for him. But what she does one day for her brother, no-one could ever have imagined… Set in a prison ten years later, Grenades is a compelling drama that has at its heart the bruised innocence of Nuala, who must re-live the events of her childhood and finally make sense of them all. Grenades is Tara McKevitt’s first full-length play. In 2010 she won the RTE PJ O’Connor Award for the radio version of Grenades and in June 2011 won a Gold Award at the New York Festivals Radio Awards. Tara is a participant on The Abbey Theatre’s New Playwrights Programme 2011/12. “…enthralling…heart-wrenching…” Irish Theatre Magazine “…fantastic performance… …a vital production” Culture Northern Ireland “…little fire-cracker of a play…” Herald Scotland **** “…powerful… …O’Grady’s fierce, heart-wrenching performance is impossible to fault” Scotsman

Sat 3rd Dec

Described as a rustic blend of altcountry, folk, old-time Americana and even Appalachian mountain song, this band manages to fuse its Irish roots with a distinctly American sound but make it all their own (The Event Guide). Dublin roots band I Draw Slow have been drumming up enthusiastic reviews in Ireland since the release of their top 10 selling second album, Redhills. However, their impact abroad is redrawing the map for these Irish/Americana songwriters. They have been described in the UK press as American top league equivalents destined to blow the opposition away, drawing favourable comparisons with Gillian Welsh and Alison Krauss. The band has been invited to tour the UK, Germany, Denmark and Belgium in 2012 so catch them while you can! Captivating (Irish Times), achingly beautiful (Hot Press), polished and gutsy (Sunday Times); 8.30pm Adm: 15/12 Family ticket 40 (2 adults & up to 3 children) Sun 4th Dec

The first Sunday session is an informal family friendly session celebrating the best of Leitrim traditional music hosted each month by a well known guest musican. Café-style seating. Wednesday 7th December

Pocketful Of Miracles

Dir. Frank Capra USA 1961 136 mins Cert U (UK) Starring: Bette Davis, Glenn Ford, Frank Capra,s final film, a remake of his 1933 Lady for a Day, is a pocketful of sentimental whimsy, about an apple seller (Davis), who is helped by a gangster (Glenn Ford) and his small-time hoodlums to pose as a high society lady when her long-lost daughter returns from abroad. Legendary director Frank Capra, whose films include It Happened One Night (1934) and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), championed the dreams of the “little person”. Pocketful of Miracles (1961) was the last feature film he ever made, but it is no exception to the pervading sense of optimism and sentiment that were his signature. Fri 9th Dec

Damien Dempsey Acoustic Show

Adm: €20

The top Irish singer songwriter returns to the Glens. An outstanding live performer, Damien has come to be regarded as the pre-eminent Irish singer songwriter. The Irish Examiner wrote that he now stands as one of the most important and evocative Irish singers of all time. Morrissey, who was deeply moved by Dempsey, declared that to hear him sing is to realise the magnitude of his astounding voice and heart. The songs are true, and his is the best and often the saddest voice of this generation. This is Damiens first gig in the Glens in almost 3 years so booking is highly recommended. Fri 16th Dec 8.30pm. Donations very welcome.

Glens Rock School & Songwriting Concert

Following on from the hugely successful summer rock school and Halloween half term rehearsal and recording week, our young musicians take to the stage for a fundraising concert for the rock school. Please come and support our talented new generation of emerging local musicians.

The Cornmill Theatre presents VICTOR’S DUNG A comedy written & directed by Seamus O’Rourke

Victor’s Dung is set in a farm yard, complete with its very own dung heap, outdoor toilet and rather poor broadband reception. It is the comic tale of Victor Maguire, a crude, vulgar, abrupt, un-PC Cavan farmer who gets a surprise one Friday morning. We are then taken on whirlwind journey through Victor’s somewhat sad and unconventional life, meeting up with many a strange bucko along the way… Hold on to your hats… and your sweets (because there maybe Cavan people in the audience)… this could get messy..Award winning play by Writer, Director and Actor Seamus O’Rourke. The show which also stars Tommy Sharkey and Charlie McGuinness has been brought back by popular demand for a limited run in 2012. Fri 3rd Feb

A performance of work-in-progress on Jimmy Gralton’s Dancehall will take place in the LSC on January 20th, details to be confirmed closer to the time.
