The Jury Room The Jury Room
Housed in the beautiful surroundings of the 19th century Dock building The Jury Room Cafe Bar is open from 10.30am (Tuesday - Saturday) providing a warm and convivial atmosphere in which you can relax, pore over the daily newspaper or read from the large selection of books and journals that adorn it’s shelves. In addition there is a range of CDs available that archive the many great musical performances heard at The Dock since it’s opening in 2005. The cafe serves a selection of speciality coffees and fairtrade teas as well delicious homemade scones and cakes. An ideal place for elevenses or to meet friends during the day. The Jury Room is also open on the evening of performances at The Dock from 7.45pm so you can enjoy a pre-show or interval drink. If you are passing The Dock over the coming months or attending one of our many events, why not pop in, and take a few moments to view our exhibitions and judge for yourself why The Jury Room offers one of Carrickon-Shannon’s most welcoming atmospheres. The box office is open for advance bookings from 10am – 6pm Monday to Saturday and 7.45pm – 8.30pm on the evening of a performance. Tickets must be paid for at time of booking. Payment can be made by cash, credit card, laser or cheque. Cheques should be made payable to The Dock. All shows start at 8.30pm, unless otherwise stated. Customers are requested to pick up their tickets at the box office at least 30 minutes before the show. Once purchased, tickets can only be refunded with sufficient notice and at the latest by 5.30pm on the day before the show.
Concessions & Group Bookings Concessions are available to students, senior citizens and the unemployed. Please state at time of booking. Group discounts are available.
Gift Vouchers An ideal gift for any occasion, gift vouchers are available through the Box Office and may be exchanged for tickets to any performance in the theatre at The Dock.
Latecomers Latecomers cannot be admitted until a suitable break in the performance, which in some cases may be the interval.

We have some new stuff for you all!
The Space brings a new angle to live performances once a month at The Dock. On these fantastic evenings we will transform our theatre space into a de facto cafe/club where you can enjoy an eclectic range of music in an informal atmosphere with free seating (put simply we are taking out the fixed seating, replacing them with comfy couches, tables, maybe a bean bag or two and making room to boogie!) To assist your boogie we will be adding DJ sets of varying musical styles to certain events so that you can stay on after a gig, enjoy a few more drinks and get down. In short you get more in your night out and it comes at no extra cost. You can expect some visual treats as well along the way. What’s more, we are extending the benefits of membership of our Trad music club to all music performances at The Dock. The Leitrim Live Music Club is free to join and entitles you to concession prices for designated music events in the venue. All current Trad Club members are automatically part of the new club. Not only that, we have another new club for lovers of classic cinema. If you are retired, have time on your hands and are interested in the pictures you might like to become a member of our new Classic Cinema Club. The club is especially for those of you who are over 55 or retired and would like a chance to see, once again, some of the old classic films from years gone by. Membership is free and entitles you to discounted entry to all Film Club showings, and a complimentary tea or coffee. Fight Night is a gripping journey charting the comeback of Dan Coyle Jr, a failed amateur boxer from a long line of accomplished fighters. Living in the shadows of his overbearing father and his brother’s Olympic success, Dan lets his training slip in favour of girls and booze. Then, an incident with his father minutes before a crucial bout splinters the family and exiles Dan from the ring. It’s not until the birth of his own son years later that his competitive fire is reignited, and he takes the first tentative steps on his road to redemption. Winner of Best Actor and Bewley’s Little Gem award, at last year’s Absolut Fringe, this fast-paced and engaging solo performance combines intense physicality with a classic Dublin wit in a storytelling experience that will leave audiences both exhausted and exhilarated. ‘What Are You Made Of?’
Leitrim Design House 4.30pm A Children’s craft workshop for all ages on Culture Night. Craft your county’s colours in celebration of Year of Craft 2011. This is a craft workshop for all ages that will be organised in several craft centre’s/organisations across Ireland on Culture Night. Workshop participants will use textile materials, in their county colours, to create a small panel using a variety of craft techniques.
Writers Workshop with Belinda McKeon
The Dock Music Room 6pm The Dock is thrilled to include celebrated author Belinda McKeon in our line up for Culture night. Hot on the publicity trail of her debut novel Solace Belinda will be giving a writers workshop on culture night. All participants are asked to summit a piece no longer than 8 pages. The workshop will work best if all participants have read each others writing. Once you have secured a place email your writing to cmcaree@leitrimcoco.ie by Friday 9th September. The Dock will be responsible for passing on the work of other participants. 6
We Love Vintage Workshop
The Dock Workshop Room 6pm Wendy Knight from Wendy Louise Designs (www.wendylouisedesigns.ie) and Eileen Abbott will facilitate a fun and fabulous vintage craft making workshop. All participants will leave with their very own handmade vintage textile piece. Places are limited to 10 so early booking is advised.
DJing workshop
The Dock Theatre Space 6pm Aimed at all age groups, informal and musically diverse (from Sesame Street to Beethoven). Participants will be encouraged to mess around with music using all the tricks of the trade. A live cam will be in place to allow for the making of video clips. Facilitated by Paul Cunningham. Space is limited early booking advised.
Life drawing
Foyer of The Dock 9pm-10pm Participants will be encouraged to try out different materials, (collage, charcoal, ink, pencil and pen) while different poses and props are used by the model. This class is aimed at anyone with an interest in drawing... Gentle advice and encouragement will be offered by the tutor. This will operate on a join in and have some fun basis! No booking required. A MAGIC TAPESTRY OF BEAUTIFUL HARP MUSIC, SONG AND STORY Actress and singer Glynis Casson and harpist Cormac de Barra present a beautiful collection of musical memoirs, telling the story of the Irish Harp with the music of O’Carolan and traditional Irish songs. Woven into this story are the lives and the harps of well known actor/harpist Christopher Casson and harpist Róisín Ní Sheaghdha, who contributed so much to the revival of singing old Irish songs with harp accompaniment. This fascinating journey about Glynis’ father and Cormac’s grandmother is illustrated through song, poetry, drama, and the music of their harps. Glynis Casson has played many leading 8
roles in musicals in the Gaiety Theatre Dublin. Other stage and screen acting credits include the Abbey Theatre, Focus Theatre, Fair City and The Clinic (RTE TV), films 32A, The Gift of the Magi and Moore Street Marsala. Cormac De Barra has toured worldwide and performs regularly with Moya Brennan (Clannad), singer Hazel O’Connor, as a harp duo with Anne-Marie O Farrell and presents the highly successful Arts Show ‘Imeall’ on TG4. ALL IRELAND POETRY DAY 2011
The Dock, in association with Poetry Ireland, hosts three local poets with recently published collections to celebrate All Ireland Poetry Day; Mary Guckian, Gerry Boland and Michael Herron. Mary Guckian, a native of Kiltoghert, Co. Leitrim and now resident in Dublin, has published three collections of poetry, Perfume of the Soil (1999), The Road to Gowel (2000) and most recently Walking on Snow (2010) , published by Swan Press. She has been published extensively in poetry journals, magazines & newspapers and is the recipient of several poetry prizes, including this year’s Leitrim Guardian Poetry Award. Gerry Boland writes poetry and short fiction. His first collection of poetry, Watching Clouds (Doghouse Books) was published this summer, and the first book in a children’s trilogy, A Rather Remarkable Grizzly Bear, is due for publication this autumn. He has published two travel books on Dublin and his poems have been published in numerous magazines and journals. He lives in Keadue. Michael Herron’s first collection of poetry ‘The Stones at Streedagh’, was published this year. A winner of several national poetry competitions including the inaugural iYeats prize in 2009, he has been widely published in a number of anthologies. He lives in Dromod, Co. Leitrim. This will be followed by a selection of emerging and new writers of poetry in Leitrim, including Orla Parkinson, Tim Parry and Eileen O’ Toole. 9

The Mike Nielsen Quartet is a new exciting acoustic quartet assembled by guitarist Mike Nielsen. The group brings together some of the finest musicians on the music scene today: Boston born vocalist Ellen Demos; clarinetist, Brendan Doyle and percussionist Shane O’Donovan. The music, composed by the leader, is innovative and comprises an eclectic mix of musical influences from jazz, classical, rock and traditional cultures. Their new CD, Acoustic Sound Recipes, was critically acclaimed in the Irish Times: “Guitarist Mike Nielsen’s fine quartet marries jazz with Indian, Caribbean, Jewish and African idioms to create a fascinating hybrid” Mike Nielsen will give a master class in guitar at The Dock from 4.30pm 5.30pm. The Puppet Lab (Scotland) presents
LOST SOCK PRINCESS
INTERACTIVE PLAYFUL FUN FOR CHILDREN AGED 3-7 AND THEIR FAMILIES Lost Sock Princess is a visually delightful 50 minute interactive show, performed by two puppeteers and their socks. The performance is uniquely playful. It begins with an interactive workshop that sees the children making their own odd sock puppets. The ideas gathered from the children in the workshop then go on to influence the world of the play and the characters that are met by Rachael’s sock. The interactive element continues as the children are encouraged to engage and have fun through the medium of sock puppetry. Ethically the play promotes the message that it is ‘great’ to be different by exploring themes such as “accepting yourself”, “being tolerant of others” and “recycling”. Note: Audience members are invited to bring along an odd sock for the workshop/show. 10

Homeless McGoldrig once had splendid things. But he has lost it all including his mind. He now dives into the wonderful wounds of his past through the romantic world of Rudolph Valentino. MICHELLE SHOCKED MARKS 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TEXAS CAMPFIRE TAPES A rare opportunity to see Michelle Shocked in such intimate surrounds. In a 24-year career that has seen critical acclaim at every juncture, Michelle Shocked has made good use of her independence, releasing more critically acclaimed albums on her Mighty Sound label. Her 2009 album, Soul of My Soul, was the latest of these. This year’s Campfire Girl tour bears witness to the enduring legacy of her highly unusual debut, The Texas Campfire Tapes, a bootleg famously recorded on a Sony Walkman and released, unbeknownst to Shocked, by an enterprising Briton. In 2010, she launched Roadworks, an ongoing, 5-year touring project which curates audience’s favourite songs while developing new, unreleased material. 2011 Roadwork’s theme, ‘Campfire Girl’, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the release of The Texas Campfire Tapes. Her performance will recapture the raw intimacy of a portrait of the artist as a young woman, and refresh memories of that audacious introduction. 14

The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish focuses on Henry Smith -actor, raconteur, sporting hero, leading socialite, business tycoon, secret agent, casanova and acting President of the United States, Alice Smith – housewife and French waiter Michel, tall, dark and available. Exactly what happened next, no-one’s quite sure. And only their pet goldfish, Orca, and you, will ever know the true story.

Anyone who has attended one of Paul Durcan’s electrifying poetry readings can testify to the unique flavour of his work... and what flavour! From the hypocrisies of the church to governmental bureaucracy and the bourgeois pretensions of the social elite, Durcan has spent the last four decades taking contemporary Irish life to task. That he has done so with wit, intelligence and incantatory style has served him well, achieving that rarest of literary feats: huge popular appeal with wide critical acclaim. His first book, Endsville (1967) has been followed by twentyone others, including The Berlin Wall Café (a Poetry Book Society Choice in 1985), Daddy, Daddy (winner of the Whitbread Award for Poetry in 1990), A Snail in My Prime: New and Selected Poems (1993), Greetings to Our Friends in Brazil (1999), The Art of Life (2004), The Laughter of Mothers (2007) and Life is a Dream (2009). In 2001 Paul Durcan received a Cholmondeley Award. He was Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2004 to 2007. ELEVENS is a three piece acoustic band from Dublin. Formed by Martin McCann and Tony Barrett from two of Dublin’s most prestigious Indie bands (Sack and Brilliant Trees), it wasn’t long before a third member Mark Healy (The Josephs/Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club) joined forces to add some tonal colour to complete the overall sound. Acoustic guitar based and with the additional colour of Omnichord, Melodica and Toy Bells amongst other gadgetry, what sets ELEVENS apart from the average acoustic setup is their collaborations with photographers and visual artists – an unforgettable live experience! This show sees a collaboration with Dublin based photographer and video maker Paul Connell whose past work saw an on going exploration of the perceptible blurring of traditional boundaries between the personal and anonymous spheres. A new work is planned to provide a subtle and complimentary backdrop for ELEVENS’ poignant tales of love lost and found. This legendary group, once described as ‘the Rolling Stones of Irish Traditional Music’ have been causing a stir among the traditional Irish music community with the return of the band to the live scene in recent years. Founding members Alec Finn (bouzouki/guitar) and Johnny ‘Ringo’ McDonagh (bodhrán/bones) are joined by Eleanor Shanley (vocals), Mick Conneely (fiddle/ whistle /bouzouki), Derek Hickey (accordion) and Brian McGrath (banjo/piano). Famous for their cross-cultural experiments, they recorded traditional Irish versions of The Beatles ‘Hey Jude’, Handel’s ‘The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’. They have recorded 14 albums since their debut in 1975 many reaching gold and platinum status. Tracy Hanna - A Day is a Room
Tracy Hanna works with video installation to create sculptural objects and environments. The work made for this exhibition is a study in form, texture and movement. Through the exploration of these elements the artist has constructed an alternative world of sensory perception. She has worked with materials such as milk, paper and coal to present vast, surreal landscapes that together create an environment within the exhibition space that is both familiar and alien. Tracy Hanna is a graduate of the Dublin Institute of Technology and has also studied at Hogeshool voor de Kunsten, Utrecht. She has exhibited in many group exhibitions and has had two previous solo exhibitions: Things Fall Apart at SOMA Contemporary, Waterford (2011) and Lightness of Being with Four Gallery, Dublin (2009). She currently lives and works in Dublin.

Audrey Reynolds - Bayard Eade
Audrey Reynolds’ new work for ‘Bayard Eade’ interplays various grades of remembered and imagined space. ‘Curbelow’ - a fitted carpet traversing two gallery spaces - aspires to a promotion from fixture-and-fitting to sculpture and/or attempts a demotion from sculpture to fixture-and-fitting, or very likely wants to find the space between the two, the half a dimension between these minimal ideals. Such surfaces tend towards the office, the home, the foyer - anything but the gallery. As an import from an alien genre the work squats with uncertain intent, mildly glamourising flatness. Alongside this, an audio work - the artist’s voice re-enacting both parts of a dialogue, interlaced with reminiscences tinged with the literary and the ornamental. These floating statements of drifting intent accumulate meaning along a tide line of ghostly solitude. Audrey Reynolds studied at Bath College of Art and at Chelsea College of Art, London. She has held solo exhibitions at Outpost, Norwich (2011), Arcade, London (2010) and at Fordham Gallery, London (2007). She has also participated in group exhibitions at The Approach, London (2010), V22 Presents, London (2009), MOT international, London (2008), Ancient & Modern, London (2008), Hats Plus, London (2007), Netwerk Centre for Contemporary Art, Aalst, Belgium and in the 60th Anniversary Show at Gimpel Fils, London (2006). She lives and works in London. Audrey Reynolds is represented by Ancient & Modern, London.

PAUL O’CONNOR: LEITRIM ARCHITECTURE
Paul O’Connor presents an extensive series of photographs of the work of four architectural practices based in County Leitrim. The focus is on domestic architecture: how houses are inhabited and how in turn those houses inhabit the landscape. The idea is to present a picture of some current architecture in Leitrim and show possibilities for the future of domestic architecture. ‘THE WAY THAT WE LIVE’
‘The Way That We Live’ is an exhibition by artist James P Kinsella that aims to demonstrate how we can, through art, reclaim that space of defining house-home that was stolen from us during the ‘Celtic Tiger period’ by the banking institutions, developers, speculators, builders, auctioneers and even the Government through its tax incentives. The audience is asked to write a short paragraph, accompanied by a drawing, outlining their concept of house-home. There are then asked to choose a book from the selection on offer – or please feel free to bring your own. The chosen book should reference some characteristics expressed in their concept or house is then used as a building block to construct a sculpture of mortar and books that will represent a traditional three-room cottage. The constructed house becomes a social structure. James will begin this process on Friday 5pm at the start of the Green-Door Leitrim weekend at the Dock. He will then be there all day Saturday and then at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre on Sunday 11th. Please join him and help him build his dream home! Scaremongering Video Installation Workshop
Artist Tracy Hanna will facilitate a Video Installation workshop. This will begin with a short presentation on video installation. Participants will then spend time recording video footage of objects, people and places in the Dock Arts Centre. They will manipulate and distort this footage through projection to create terrifying landscapes and creatures to inhabit them. They will also create some ghoalish sound recordings to accompany the visuals. The goal will be to create our own chamber of horrors within the Arts Centre. Participants are asked to bring their own digital camcorders or cameras that are capable of recording video. These need to be able to playback video on a TV, so check that they can before bringing them. Please contact the Arts Centre and we will provide a camera if you cannot. Shortly after the workshop a DVD will sent in the post to all participants with documentation of the installations that are made. Places are limited so early booking is advised. Jazz Guitarist/Composer Michael Nielsen was born in Sligo, and started playing the ukulele at the age of four. Michael won a scholarship and Jim Hall incentive award in 1982 to attend Berklee College of Music, Boston, where he studied from ‘83-’85. He holds a classical performance diploma, LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College of Music, London) and a Masters degree, MPhil, in music and physics from the DIT School of Physics, Dublin. Equally innovative on acoustic and electric guitars, Michael has gained a reputation as one of the leading guitarists in European jazz. THE DOCK HAS A BLOGGER!
In the beginning, there was Carrick, quietly huddled onto the majestic river Shannon, which was the olden day when it was almost impossible to get a decent cuppa in town. Then, there was The Dock, a magnificent centre for the arts emerging within the shell of the town’s former courthouse. And there am I, never a local, but never a stranger, my father has not worked the Irish land, but here it is were my daughter will get her first kiss and my sons play hide and seek in the field as if it always has been their own. Remember those summers 1995, ’96, with a full blazing sun for weeks on end? That was when this country became my home, it seems a lifetime away, and today I endure the rain like all of us… And now, there is this idea, a blog for The Dock, a different way of letting you know what’s up, what on, what’s coming next, an inside view of what is hot or who is the face behind some intriguing piece of art… So there is me, applying to the blogger wanted–ad last month, and suddenly and (I have to admit) very gratefully I find myself in the position of being the chosen one; so once I master the initial hurdles of setting up blogger-camp, I’ll be the one writing about The Dock, about the art, about activities and ideas, about our town’s cultural life. It is all about connecting, about reaching out and feeding back, about discovering, learning and sharing, and sometimes for me - to reach for the stars, to sail away from the safe harbour and dare a new thing. So what I need most is YOU, my readers the new readers of a new blog, the local art lovers and supporters, the families and kids, the aspiring artists, the busy or preoccupied professionals, the enthusiastic students and youngsters, the tired parents, the interested YOU… A couple more words on introducing myself: as your new Dock blogger I personally love theatre, modern dance performances, poetry, and music and lyrics that reach into the hidden corners of the soul, I love paintings and visual arts in all kinds of shapes and form, and I always wonder and ponder around the story behind the scene and what the artist might be like. Yet I’ll be also happily blogging about stuff that wouldn’t have caught my eye before, no harm in checking out new things and keep the grey matter going before the grey hair starts growing! This is going to be my first blog, and I am not as computer nerdy as I wish to be, so be patient and keep checking in till things run smoothly and happily. The Dock is a place to hang out, to wander about in the galleries, to like and dislike the exhibitions, to experience amazing performances, shows and music, to learn something maybe completely new in one of the countless daytime workshops, to see a new face in the crowd, or just to meet your friends and grab a coffee and a new programme… Your Dock Blogger

SOLAS ART GALLERY - BALLINAMORE
Time: 7.30, www.solasart.ie Solas Art Gallery presents a programme featuring traditional music and song, talks, poetry, performance art, and visual art exhibition. LEITRIM YOUTH THEATRE COMPANY
Are you aged between 10 and 13 or between 14 and 18? Have you ever wanted to work with professional actors and directors, go to see shows all over the country, meet other young people interested in theatre, and perform in front of an audience? Leitrim Youth Theatre Company is a professional youth theatre organisation dedicated to providing opportunities for young people who wish to become involved in acting and theatre. LYTC consists of both junior and senior groups.

As a junior group member, you will take part in weekly workshops exploring your own creativity and imagination whilst attaining new skills, discovering hidden talents and making new friends. Senior group members also take part in weekly workshops covering all areas of theatre from performance to technical production. As well as working with your LYTC Director, we invite leading national and international actors, directors and other theatre specialists to give workshops in various aspects of theatre from time to time. As a member of the National Association of Youth Drama, LYTC members have access to numerous national events and opportunities such as National Youth Theatre and the Young Critics Programme. While many senior members aspire to go on to careers in theatre or the film industry, it is equally rewarding for those who have no desire to pursue theatre professionally - and for everyone LYTC is a supportive youth network where members develop their creativity, gain self confidence and make new friends. HUNTERS MOON FESTIVAL

Hunters Moon Music and Art Festival will take place on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of October in the Northwest of Ireland in Carrick on Shannon, County Leitrim. Hunters Moon Festival is an experimental music, art and film festival combining unique visual art and music into the unique town of Carrick on Shannon The festival will feature music in two locations in the town. Daytime performances will happen in St. Georges Church. Evening and night time performances will take place at the Dock Arts Centre. In association with the Dock, performances will take place at the Dock from 6pm till 9pm and then again from 10.30pm till late both on Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th. We are especially excited to announce the first ever Irish 48
performance by legendary minimalist performer Tony Conrad (USA), the man who gave the Velvet Underground their name and one of the founders of minimalist drone music, this exclusive performance promises to be like nothing we’ve seen at the Dock before. Some of the other Electronic, experimental, drone, psych and solo performers, will include - Blood Stereo (UK), The Hunter Gracchus (UK), Gnod (UK), Circulus (UK), David lacey & Paul Vogel (IRE), Herv (IRE), Sea Dog (IRE). The Brennan family is back in the home place for the funeral of their mother Peggy who was cared for in her final years by the unmarried Mary. Not all of Peggy’s children have returned, however those present review the hopes, disappointments and achievements of the past fifty years on their return from the graveside. Gradually long-kept secrets are aired and misconceptions challenged. The siblings see each other in a new light that makes sense of a past they were not always aware of – from the Munich Airport disaster to the present day. This new awareness allows conflicts and misunderstandings to be resolved and the family is united once again. OCTOBER 2011 John Bosco is a fifty three year old bachelor living in rural Leitrim. He has been consigned to a life of celibacy by a combination of religiously inspired sexual guilt, social ineptitude and plain bad luck. His fate is not, as he explains himself, the result of a lack of effort on his part. A combination of flashbacks, imaginings, and actual happenings illustrate his endeavors with the opposite sex. His run of failure continues throughout the play in spite of the ministrations of a matchmaker, his aunt Jane, a smooth-talking lothario, and even the local priest, all of whom are filled with parochial advice on the subject. Browne’s working process is developed from an engagement with site and often her work is manifest through performance, public engagement, video and sculptural objects. During her residency in Manorhamilton she has been researching the development of the built environment and will present a body of work that deals with the current state of flux in the town due to the down turn in the economy. Make the most of your chance to help ‘build a home of books’ and fix the roof before the end of the day! ‘Architecture at the edge’ Elements of this significant Architectural Exhibition, are on loan from Open-House Galway. International Architecture Critic, Shane O’Toole (Sunday Times), reviewed it’s Exhibition in Venice and noted that “though Ireland is a small country, her history is long, with structures older than the pyramids dotted throughout the island. She is unique in that her most important monuments are ruins”. The exhibition features contemporary designs in this historic landscape from the design studio’s of C.J. Falconer & Associates (Waterford), Simon J Kelly + Partners (Galway and Westport), Healy & Associates (Limerick) and Taylor Architects (Castlebar). Also: LSC’ s Current show: by Michelle Browne

Director: Derek Cianfrance Country: USA Cert: 16 112 mins 27/10/2011 Beautifully acted, cleverly structured drama in which a couple once wildly in love contemplate their current misery. Starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, the pair make a faithful decision to embark on a weekend away in a tacky hotel. While they fail to reconnect we flash back to the airy beginnings of their tangled affair.

Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna only months after his father Hal passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who – following 44 years of marriage came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full energised tumultuous gay life.
Director: Jerzy Skolinowski Country: Poland Cert: 15A 84 mins 3/11/2011 Weird, highly original thriller in which Gallo as an unnamed and vaguely motivated killer flees security forces across a snowy tundra. At its best Essential Killing is Gallo in the moment. A bleeding, shivering animal engaging in whatever extreme eating is required to survive. The actor finds something common to humanity in the bestial underneath. The latest from cult Polish director Skolinowski is emblematic of the new European vogue for pure cinema.

Director: Xavier Beauvois Country: French 122 mins 13/10/2011 Bewitching film following the lives of trapist monks in 1990’s Algeria as tensions grow with local Muslim militants. It would be wrong to make too much of the juxtapositions between passive Christianity and active Islam. The picture is so sure in its casting and performances that personalities register more strongly than ideologies.
Director: Pedro Almodovar Country: Spain 120 mins 10/11/2011 The latest eagerly awaited Almodovar film, the great Spanish director, brings a hypnotic quality to this exquisitely choreographed and compelling tale of surgical obsession starring Antonio Banderas as the brilliant plastic surgeon, Almodovar describes this film as a horror story without screams or frights. To know too much about this movie is to ruin the experience.

Director: Asghar Farhadi Country: Iran 122 mins 17/11/2011 An unhappily married couple break up in this complex, painful, fascinating Iranian drama by writer/director Asghar Farhadi with explosive results that expose a network of social and personal faultlines. Because of censorship in Iran this film relies heavily on symbolism as is the case with all Iranian cinema. A Separation cannot be divorced from Iranian politics. 55

Drumshanbo College of Further Education & Leitrim VEC will offer a range of full time FETAC Level 5 courses starting in September 2011 such as Traditional Irish Music and also Media Engineering. The Traditional Irish Music course is open to people with an interest in gaining a broad understanding of Irish music as well as Irish song, dance and folklore. There is a strong focus on playing music but no previous experience is necessary as the course is open to all levels. The Media Engineering course is a practical introduction to sound engineering and an introduction to the world of multimedia. You will study the music industry, event production, media analysis and sound engineering among other subjects and have a chance to help record your own production.
