Johnnies Britches

Beezneez return with a lovely old Irish comedy, Johnnies Britches. Written by Athlone teacher, PG O’Dea, Johnnies Britches was a nationwide hit when first produced in the 1940’s. Anxious to be rid of their accident prone servant girl, Ned and Bridget are willing to allow her to be married to almost anybody, including Johnnie (britches notwithstanding). However an unexpected letter from America throws all plans into confusion and it is left to Johnnie himself to untangle the web of conundrums that ensue. Under the direction of John McDwyer, Beezneez bring their distinctive production values to this gentle comedy of another time. Another guaranteed ‘Good Night Out’ from Beezneez. The Border

Our summer exhibition, The Border is an invitation to re-think and reimagine the theory and practice of border-making. The show features three artists whose individual projects raise many questions about borders in their many manifestations -- geographic, architectural, physical, conceptual -- questions that might apply to our own locality as much as they might globally.

Garrett Carr: New Maps of Ulster Believing cartography can be claimed and conducted by independent practitioners Garrett Carr has taken the Irish border as his case study for re- exploration. His cartographical work questions the traditional borderline and seeks to replace it with symbols more accurate and progressive. Over several weeks Garrett travelled every mile of the Border, by foot, bicycle and canoe. His exhibition New Maps of Ulster is based on his maps of what he found along the way.

Bryonie Reid: (re)writing From a body of academic research into the Irish border Bryonie has produced a visual installation, creating drawings and prints from essays and interviews with border dwellers in which the visual patterns of text are as of much interest to the artist as its meaning. These are pieced together in an effort to explore and map the complex significance of the geographical border in Ireland, and negotiate the disciplinary border between academic and art practices.

The residency promotes and develops traditional music in Leitrim and celebrates the rich tradition of music and song in Leitrim. In each of six visits over the next 18 months the group will meet local musicians and spend time in different community settings. An important element of the ‘Leitrim Equation 3’ programme is to support musicians who wish to develop their practice and gain more knowledge in areas such as composition, arrangement, recording, performance and promoting their own work. If you would like more information on the residency or would be interested in the professional development programme, please contact Maureen Carty on 086 866 4832.

JOYCED! By Donal O’Kelly, Performed by Katie O’Kelly. Directed by Glens Theatre Artist in Residence Sorcha Fox, JOYCED! is a tour de force of Joycean Dublin. It is a chaotic, exciting, whirlwind odyssey through the people, events and a year, 1904, which James Joyce would later make famous in Ulysses. Catch it in the Glens Centre before it goes on tour to the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals this summer. ‘SONGS OF JOYCE’ performed by Sinead Murphy and Darina Gallagher is a 50-minute musical extravaganza of songs drawn from the life and works of James Joyce, from bawdy street ballads and sea shanties to music hall hits and folksongs.
