Our farewell and sincere thanks goes to Siobhán O’Malley, outgoing director of the Dock. During her tenure working in Carrick-on-Shannon’s unique creative hub, she has been the driving force behind the Dock’s consistently strong vision for artistic and innovative excellence, regionally and nationally. Siobhan moved to Leitrim in 2005, a few months before the Dock opened, taking up her first role as Communications Officer for Leitrim Arts Office and the Dock. Following this she moved to become the Assistant Director in 2007 before becoming the Director in 2010. Siobhan has been one of the adjudicators at Dublin Fringe Festival and has sat on selection/judging panels for several other music initiatives including Music Network and Eurosong, in addition to working as a music agent and promoter on a freelance basis. Her most recent production has been with Dónal Dineen and uilleann pipers Leonard Barry, Pádraig McGovern and John Tuohy alongside a team of video and visual artists; painter Guillermo Carrión, video artist Lionel Palun, film-maker Myles O’Reilly and cameraman Simon O’Neill. She is planning to tour this work internationally, and has many more exciting projects in the pipeline. We will miss Siobhan’s warm personality and presence around the Dock and we wish her every success in her future endeavours.

From her studio base at The Dock Arts Centre, Carrick-on-Shannon, Naomi has participated on a number of residency programmes within a community and educational context. Timothy O’Grady with music by Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh

I Could Read The Sky is a finely woven tale of an Irishman returned home from a hard life in England’s potato fields and factories, beautiful both for its words and for its images. As part of the Bealtaine 2015 festival The Dock is delighted to welcome Irish American author Timothy O’Grady to Carrick-on-Shannon to read from his acclaimed work alongside renowned fiddler and singer Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh, and to reflect on photography by Steve Pyke allows the reader to see through the author’s mournful eyes the life he had left behind as a child, the father who wouldn’t say good-bye, and the love of his life gone so fast. Interspersed between intricately lyrical prose are haunting pictures of life in Labasheeda -- images of Baby pushing her pram, of the Tailor who burns his loom dressed only in his underclothes and nothing else, and of the wide

Their recordings have been hailed as some of the best and most important world music albums anywhere, while their blend of intelligence, innovation, virtuosity, and passion has brought them to the forefront of Celtic music.

and achievement. This year’s outgoing students are greatly looking forward to the opportunity of presenting selected elements of their final year shows in The Dock’s beautifully restored 19th century This year’s exhibition will present a mix of formal and conceptual concerns expressed through a wide range of art practices. The fine art course at Sligo IT has specialisms in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, film and mixed media installation. Though diverse in its parts the exhibition shows a level of artistic focus and ambition and provides a wonderful opportunity to view and engage with the work of students just emerging into a vibrant Irish art scene.

Anna Macleod: WATER CONVERSATIONS Anna Macleod is a Leitrim-based artist whose work on the complex subject of water has great international as well as local impact and relevance. Water Conversations: A Survey of Works 2007-2015 is major exhibition of the artist’s activity that, to date, has taken place in Ghana, West Africa, Northern India, Colorado, USA: Ireland: Gobi Desert, Mongolia: Alberta, Canada: Alméria, Spain and in October 2015, Broken Hill, Australia. Water Conversations is the umbrella term for an ongoing series of Macleod’s projects since 2007. Articulated as a series of actions, small sculptures, posters, drawings and public interventions, the work explores the complex interstices between landscape, science and technology, culture and geopolitics. The collaborative aspect of the work has led to working partnerships with artists, scientists, cultural geographers, activists and engineers. The recent works from Canada, Water Conversations | Alberta and OH Alberta explore the uneasy psychological space in contemporary life between a global addiction to fossil fuel and a desire for landscape as a wilderness space.

(Dorothy Parker)

Composer Trevor Knight and singer Honor Heffernan are delighted to present The Whistling Girl, featuring new musical settings of the poetry of the great Dorothy Parker. Audiences can expect a darkly sardonic evening’s entertainment in which the American wit and critic’s words are given a sonic face-lift fusing ‘dirty’-cabaret, electronic-vaudeville, rock and jazz. A band of top Irish musicians including Garvan Gallagher/bass, Tom Jamieson/drums, Conor Brady/guitar and Trevor Knight/keyboards, will be fronted by

The Harpers Wake

The Harper’s Wake was such a popular success at Sligo All Ireland Fleadh 2014 that Beezneez Theatre Company has been invited back to present this wonderful mixture of music and mirth at Fleadh 2015 and play two nights in The Dock before that. When Mark, the harper, dies suddenly, his neighbours gather to console his widow. Robert, Stephen and spinster Kate Anne provide their own musings on life and death whilst Marks musical friends adorn his wake with wondrous music and dancing. If you saw it last year, you’ll want to see it again. If not, don’t miss it this year.

Mag, a pregnant teenager and Joe, her boyfriend and husband to be, spend the last day of their lives studying for their final exam, on a hilltop overlooking their native town. There, by turns, they laugh, argue, poke fun and show a touching love for each other, as they reminisce on the past and contemplate an uncertain future. This marvellous evocation of young love features Emma Dobbyn and Sean Elliot, both drama students in I.T. Sligo. ‘ART & AGRICULTURE II’ & ‘AGRI_CULTURE’ 10 July – 3 August

Opening to be announced

A partnership between Roscommon Arts Centre (Agri_Culture) and Leitrim Sculpture Centre (Art and Agriculture II), the project takes the form of a residency where public spaces within the two centres will be used as active production and research areas for the selected artists. Artists will respond directly to agriculture, the transformation of the landscape and related issues emerging from these contexts. Taking the proximity of 2 cultural centres (Roscommon Arts Centre & Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Manorhamilton) to regional agricultural marts and shows as a starting point, artists will be invited to explore the socio-economic contributions these institutions make to their respective towns and environs, as well as their relations to wider social tendencies or landscapes of concern. Opening Fri 14 Aug. 5-8pm

Anna Macleod utilises a variety of methods, strategies and processes to mediate complex ideas associated with land use and its limited resources. Her intention is to generate discourse about aspects of land management and the (often competing) sets of values attached to natural resources contained within the landscape. Recent projects have focused on the socio-political and cultural issues surrounding ‘water’, looking at local and global issues of access, management, control and consumption of this finite substance. Since moving to a rural location Macleod’s work has become involved in using sculpture and public interventions as a catalyst to re-define environmental space and the cultural activities that take place within them.

The Joe Mooney Summer School of Traditional Music, Song and Dance Every July Drumshanbo plays host to the award winning Joe Mooney Summer School. This is a week long traditional festival of Irish music, song and dance named after the man who did so much to promote the cause of Leitrim and his beloved town. The committee continue to emulate his high ideals, endeavouring to promote Leitrim’s heritage of traditional music, while handing on the best traditions of the past to future generations. Classes are open to people of all ages with some previous experience, although beginners are welcome to the set dancing, tin whistle and bodhrán classes. In addition to the classes and workshops there are recitals, ceilithe, lectures, and open air music events. The impromptu music sessions, the natural beauty of the Drumshanbo area and the traditional ‘ceád míle fáilte’ hospitality of County Leitrim provide an unforgettable week for all those who participate in the classes and also for those who just visit the town to be part of the experience.
