Nr 37, April 201 6
Taxis needs more of Mr Nice across SA TWO assasinations followed on the annual general meeting of the South African National Taxi Council in Newcastle, KZN, in February this year. At the 2016 AGM, KwaZuluNatal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu expressed satisfaction at the stable and peaceful operations achieved by the taxi industry. He attributed this to the partnership between and government Santaco, which has enabled a joint approach to resolving conflict, especially in the town hosting the AGM, which was a hotbed of violence. Mchunu said incidents of taxi violence were subsiding in KZN, with “only few areas” still problematic. He praised operators in KwaNongoma, Mandeni, Nyoni KwaDukuza, Maphumulo, Folweni, Bergville, Port Shepstone, Howick and Newcastle for making peace, but warned operators in KwaNdengezi and Molweni to bury the hatchet.

Taxi drivers there turned off their taxis after a shooting incident in the early hours of Wednesday. 23 February. Sabelo Nese report for The Witness that taxi driver Xolani Hlela (37) died after being shot while picking up passengers in the Shange area, a section where there is an ongoing conflict between two rival taxi groups over routes. Police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said Hlela had sustained three gunshot wounds, with one shot that missed him. “One hit him in the forehead, one at the back of the head and the third in the back. Four empty pistol cartridges were found at the scene. “The motive for the killing is unknown and no arrest has been made at this stage,” he said. Taxi owner Bhekizitha Makhathini said Hlela, a
