News to inspire professional drivers of all size vehicles in southern Africa
Nr 38, April-May 201 6
What to do about boy racers in their cars SAMUEL MAKHATHINI IT is every hazchem driver's nighmare, car drivers who race past only to brake hard under your nose. This happened again down Townhill on the N3 on Monday 25 April, when a young man in a white Tazz ignored the roadwork signs and raced past a tanker. Eye-witness Rajsh Singh wrote to The Witness that the Tazz then clipped a Bobcact, slewing in front of the tanker. The ensuing crash and explosions killed two and critically injured four more and closed the southbound highway for the next 24 hours. As always happens after a major crash such as this, truck drivers were collectively blamed for all crashes ever made, with the usual calls for trucks to be taken off the highway. We say it is not truckers, but impatient drivers in cars and taxis who cause most crashes. For the reality is that over 6,000 trucks drive on the N3 highway every day, with on average three trucks "falling" somewhere along the road on a 24 hour period, typically on Van Reenen's Pass on
on the long sleep-inducing stretch past Warden. This low accident rate is due to the fact that South Africa's truckers officially rank among the top ten safest drivers in the world in international competitions. Before I retired, I myself was ranked a top driver in Africa and North America by the fuel company I delivered for. Eshowe's ownerdriver Regie Naidoo represented South Africa against the world's Volvo drivers in Sweden. At Manline, Nduna Chari was selected by German company MAN to promote their latest truck through nine African states, covering a total distance of 13,234 kms. And most recently Daimkler Group has confirmed Marshall Hendricks (30) from Imperial Fast’n Fresh in Cape Town, has achieved the highest score of 9,95 out of a possible 10 in the 2015 FleetBoard Drivers’ League, the best score in over 19 000 drivers in 18 countries who took part in the competition. Fire fighters fought all day to dose the flames from a
To South Africa we say slow truckers aren't the main problem, fast car and and impatient taxi drivers are!

With proper training, half these accidents could have been prevented, as over 40 of the fleets surveyed have never conducted road safety awareness training for their drivers. The research strongly suggests that fleet management in SA is mostly a part-time activity. Most of the fleet managers interviewed have as their main duties accounting, human resources management and office administration functions. When asked what their main preoccupations were when it
SHARING THE BOUNTY
SINCE small beginnings over 35 years ago, Balers founder Abu-Baker Tayob has seen his company grow into Bakers SA Limited. Last week, the broadly smiling patriarch was one of three generations who marked the handover of 1 01 new Actros trucks, the biggest consignment of trucks yet for the company. As is the norm of this devout Ayob family, the ceremony opened with a supplication to God Almighty to grant the company “barakah, so that the staff could continue sharing the bounty with their family, community and area.
came to their fleet management duties, most respondents said keeping down cost and stopping fraud and theft. Mobilitas say the best flaat mamangers are also concerened with the social, environmental and economic impact, not only productivity and profitability. Excellence in fleet management, the researchers propose, has at least four pillars: managing the risks facing the fleet, managing the people who operate the fleet, managing the impact of the fleet on the environment and
managing the administrative systems of the fleet. The South African industry average score for vehicle management and driver management stands at 35%, and comes in only marginally higher for environmental and road traffic safety management at 38% each. Less than half of the poorly rated fleets kept a driving licence and vehicle register, only 35% had their vehicles insured for business, and a paltry 17% inspected their grey vehicles.
Former SA top driver and Bakers driver trainer Ismail Khan said Bakers drivers (shown on the right) moved the trucks in tranches stretching over three days to avoid putting undue pressure on the N3. ONE in three fleets owners in South Africa have no daily management policy for their vehicles or drivers. This is the shock finding from research conducted by Mobilitas iand Standard Bank Fleet Management. They interviews a small but broadly representative sample of 61 fleets, totalling just over 21,000 vehicles. Showing how dangerous SA's roads are, the 21,000 trucks had 469 collisions in the preceding year, with 7 people killed and 12 seriously injured.
