SATURDAY, 13 JUNE, 2015 As the bakkie market braces for the new Hilux …

Ford, Toyota offer tempting alternatives ALWYN VILJOEN AS Hilux sales continue to dip while buyers await the arrival of the next generation of SA’s favourite bakkie, Ford and Isuzu are pulling all the stops to lure the Toyota faithful to their showrooms. In this marketing battle Ford has fired the most impressive salvo in the 3,2 litre Ranger Wildtrack. This special edition is packed out with the most digital driving aids of any bakkie in SA.

Apart from the quicklinking SYNC2, the big bakkie also has front and rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, a drowsy driver monitor and lanekeeping assist and a tyre pres sure monitor system. There is also a very handy 240 volt plug that can power all laptops. With 147 kW and 470 Nm, the 3,2 litre Duratorq engine also produ ces the second most power in SA after Nissan’s rather thirsty Navara. The Wildtrack Ranger only goes on sale in October and Ford will announce

a price closer to the date. Meanwhile Isuzu has made the Serengeti 300 double cab available, which is basically the normal Isuzu made more attractive with judicious use of shiny and blackedout bits on the exterior. At 130 kW and 380 Nm the three litre DTeq turbo diesel in the Serengeti does not produce quite the stumppulling power of Ford’s 3,2 litre, but this power is more than suf ficient and also fuel miserly. Three Serengeti models are availa ble, with the entry level LX listed for

R468 400 and the LX 4x4 listed for R522 600. The keyword is “listed”, as Isuzu dealers are leaders in the busi ness of negotiating a good price, and Motoring readers often tell of the good trade in or discount they got from Key Group dealers. The Isuzu has a fiveyear or 120 000 km warrantee with a five year or 90 000 km service plan. While neither is likely to shake the convictions of the Hilux drivers, Ford and Isuzu fans will find a lot to delight in both the Wildtrack and Serengeti.

Two new Sportage variants add glitter to the range KIA first introduced the Sportage in 1993, and sold the model across the globe until 2004. The secondgener ation Sportage, introduced in 2005, immediately caught the eye and went on to become a bestseller for KIA, with more than 860 000 units find ing homes during its sixyear lifespan. It was the thirdgeneration Sport age, one of Peter Schreyer’s first de signs for KIA Motors, which cement ed its reputation as one of the world’s mostloved compact crossovers. Tak ing its cue from the 2007 KIA KUE concept car, the thirdgeneration Sportage made its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, and ar rived on South African shores at the end of August 2010. It was an immediate success and has, to date, received numerous awards including an IF design award, a Red Dot design award, an award in

the Automotive Brand Contest, as well as multiple “Car of the Year” awards. Locally it was nominated as a finalist in the 2011 Wesbank/ SAGMJ Car of the Year competition, while it was crowned the overall win ner in the SUV and crossover catego ry in the annual Standard Bank Peo ple’s Wheels Awards in 2013. KIA South Africa is now adding two Sportage TEC derivatives to the lineup. Based on the extremely popular Sportage 2.0 CRDi automatic, the new Sportage TEC is available in frontwheel drive and allwheel drive. Setting the two TEC models apart from the rest of the Sportage range are 18inch alloy wheels and full LED taillight clusters, complemented by privacy glass. A subtle “TEC” badge also adorns the tailgate of both mod els. A onetouch panoramic sunroof

that, until now, has only been availa ble as an option on the diesel AWD model is now standard on both the Sportage TEC 2WD and Sportage TEC AWD. Interior comfort on both models is enhanced through the addition of ventilated and heated seats for the driver and front passenger, the latter function arriving just in time for those cold winter mornings. The Sportage 2WD TEC also gains xenon headlights, a smart key with start stop button and a Supervision TFT LCD display (already included in the Sportage TEC AWD model). The two Sportage TEC models are both powered by KIA’s R2.0 turbod iesel engine, which benefits from a stateoftheart thirdgeneration commonrail fuel system with piezo electric injectors that deliver diesel at high pressure (1 800bar) with an un

precedented degree of accuracy and control. Featuring allaluminium construc tion and an electronic VGT (variable geometry turbocharger), it generates 130 kW of power at 4 000 rpm and 392 Nm of torque from just 1 800 rpm. It delivers highly competitive fuel economy and low emissions due to its lightweight construction and be ing mated to a sixspeed automatic transmission. With the addition of the new Sportage TEC, the KIA Sportage range now comprises 12 models ran ging in price from R339 995 for the 2.0 Ignite to R488 995 for the preac cessorised Sportage Explore. The new Sportage 2.0 CRDi 2WD TEC is priced at R427 995, with the AWD TEC priced at R462 995. — Supplied.
