Learners to book online New system aims to stamp out corruption by letting learner drivers choose test date and venue ALWYN VILJOEN THE Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) plans to launch an online booking system in September to combat corruption in issuing of driver’s licences to learner drivers. The new system will enable the learner driver to choose the date, time and the town where they wish to take their tests by logging on an online application and finalise pre-bookings in five to 10 minutes. The system will also be available to those wishing to renew their driving licence cards. National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit spokesperson Simon Zwane said the current system “involves a lot of handling”, which creates opportunities for unscrupulous driving schools
and officers to block off days to “test” pupils who have already bought their licences. The current process requires applicants to queue for between 140-180 minutes at a testing station. Corrupt officials at the licensing centres have an incentive to withhold available bookings for lucrative payments from willing applicants. Zwane said the new system will benefit the public by promoting efficient service delivery, removing barriers to access, eliminating fraud and corruption and optimising business operations. It is also eliminating time and money used by applicants to travel to various licensing centres to secure bookings. The solution will also allow licensing centre managers to better prepare for volumes of ex-

At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, up to a maximum angle of 2,7 degrees. Renault calls it 4CONTROL and said it really comes into its own on twisty, winding roads, the 20% more direct steering delivering incisive handling. priority for the corporation after it had revealed in May that as many as one in three licences in KZN have been obtained fraudulently due to rampant corruption.
In March, the RTMC and the Hawks arrested 15 people at the uMngeni Licensing Office in Howick, which only recently reopened. Those who were arrested included five officials from the licensing office, two traffic officers, nine learners’ applicants, and a cleaner. In May a couple were arrested at the Mkondeni licensing centre after a woman allegedly attempted to write the learner’s licence test on behalf of her partner. Three others were also arrested at the Estcourt licensing centre for fraud related matters. KZN Department of Transport spokesperson Mluleki Mntungwa said the department had suspended several inspectors and municipal supervisors who were responsible for testing sta-
tions and appealed to all applicants for learner’s and driver’s licenses not to engage any middle man and to refrain from any corrupt activities in acquiring driver’s licences. Mntungwa said the department was in the process of updating its systems and its technology to detect corruption. Advocate Johan Jonck, who founded Arrive Alive, said it was almost impossible to establish the real scale of the problem due to improperly-issued licences being indistinguishable from genuine ones on e-Natis. “It’s difficult to come up with numbers and to know exactly how many licences are awarded fraudulently.” Jonck said corruption threatening the safety and lives of everyone on the roads.

Fuso mixes on time
BAKKIE BRIEFS
FJ drivetrains give concrete proof of their reliability by keeping wet cement turning IN the business of ready-mix concrete, hours can cost more than just time. The rule of thumb is that it can take as little as three hours for concrete to set inside a concrete mixer, so it is paramount for the vehicle transporting it to be as reliable as possible. On Time Readymix Concrete — one of the biggest independent players in the ready-mix concrete business — is trusting the simply better trucks from Fuso in order to always be on time with its deliveries. Established in 2005 with one branch and two employees, the enterprise now boasts 200 employees, six branches (Brakpan, Chloorkop, Laezenia, Booysens and two in Durban). The company’s fleet consists of six Fusos: three 10-year-old 26-310 FX and three FJ 16-230 C. “We have found that our Fusos are reliable, rugged and parts are readily available when we need them. As the mixer on a truck is reliant on the truck, we simply cannot have trucks that break down on a regular basis. “This is where the Fuso outshine their competitors, and our 10-year-olds are the perfect example of this reliability. When it comes to the FJs, our drivers constantly let us know just how easy they are to drive, and they highlight their comfort,” says Krish Ramsamy, sales and logistics manager at On Time Readymix.
Fuso trucks outshine the competitors in reliability, said Krish Ramsamy, sales and logistics manager at On Time Readymix (inset). PHOTO: QUICKPIC The company was introduced to the FJ trucks by running a demo in their fleet, and they were so satisfied with the experience they immediately bought three of the trucks. Feeding the power hunger The robust Fuso FJ 26-280C boasts a direct-injection diesel
engine, rated at 205 kW at 2 200rpm with the torque levelling out at 1 100 Nm between 1 200 and 1 600rpm. This makes it the engine of choice for powerhungry applications. The unit fuel injection and higher boost pressure on the turbocharger ensure the complete burning of fuel, reducing emis-
sions and increasing fuel efficiency. In addition, durability is increased while wear is reduced by the oil-lubricated fuel pumps. The workhorse ticks all the necessary boxes in the construction sector, including a ninespeed transmission with a crawler gear that provides the flexibility required to negotiate complex
terrain for off-road applications. The capable truck also proves its mettle as it offers a Power Take-Off (PTO) as one of its standard features. This is a regular requirement in the construction industry, as the PTO supplies power to other equipment. A multi-leaf bogie type rear suspension is very robust for longer life and the ability to haul heavier loads. The decision to purchase the Fuso FJ 26-280 C trucks was also aided by the 10-year-old Fusos which have proven to be so reliable, Ramsamy has chosen to keep them for longer than the company normally retains vehicles. “Our concrete is used for domestic and industrial purposes, so we simply cannot afford not to deliver to our customers. “One of the most serious results of running unreliable trucks is that the vehicle breaks down on the side of the road, and the drum stops turning, as the engine is dead. After about three hours, the concrete sets, and it takes two weeks for the dry concrete to be removed from the mixer, using a jackhammer. “For us, it is not only about the loss of business, but also the driver we have to pay, as well as the embarrassment of not being able to deliver to a client who is in the process of building. “So the Fusos have played a huge role in assisting us to be on time,” he adds. — WR.

ISUZU FOR UK’S MASTER BUILDERS IN England, Isuzu has become the official sponsor of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). Established in 1941, the FMB is the largest trade association in the building industry and is a source of knowledge and professional advice for its members. The FMB’s strict membership criteria give consumers confidence when they are looking to use a builder. George Wallis, marketing manager at Isuzu UK, said the company sees the relationship as the start of a fantastic partnership for the next two years. “Isuzu UK are clearly positioned as the pick-up professionals and we see a real synergy with this fantastic organisation and their highly qualified, professional members,” said Wallis in a statement.
Ranger remains best-selling double cab in South Africa FORD Motor Company’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria has reached a significant milestone with the assembly of the 500 000th current generation Ford Ranger. The half-millionth unit, a Wildtrak 3.2 Double Cab, was fittingly painted in the rangetopping model’s distinctive and exclusive Pride Orange, and signifies the Ranger’s segment-defining legacy since production commenced in 2011. “The current Ford Ranger has been a remarkable success story for Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, and we are delighted to have reached the 500 000 mark for this vehicle programme,” said Ockert Berry, VP Operations, Ford Middle East and Africa. “Ford invested more than R3 billion in our local operations for the launch of the Ranger in 2011 to cater for the South African market and exports to over 148 markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “We followed this up with a further R3 billion investment in 2017 to further expand our production capacity to meet the growing worldwide demand for the Ranger,” Berry added.

Staff at Motor Company’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria look forward to launching the Ford Ranger Raptor, to add to the half a million Rangers built to date at the plant. PHOTO: QUICKPIC “This reaffirms our role as an integral part of Ford’s global manufacturing network with world-class operations at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, and at the Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth which produces the Duratorq TDCi engines for the Ranger.”
The trend-setting Ranger has introduced a wide range of cutting-edge safety, comfort and convenience features to the pickup segment over the years. Equally, the exceptional performance delivered by its 2.2 and 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engines has contributed to its remarka-
ble popularity, while the introduction of sophisticated automatic transmissions across a wide range of models and both engine capacities has reshaped the buying patterns of customers in the pick-up segment. The Ranger is the undisputed leader in the increasingly popu-
lar double cab segment in South Africa — a highly revered position it has held uncontested over numerous years. Records continue to be broken in terms of export volumes, with a truly impressive 8 062 units in April 2018. — Wheels Reporter.
Project to develop a low-carbon fuel and new engines MAZDA Motor Corporation announced the start of a joint research project with Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil company of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) aimed at
making internal combustion engines more efficient and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The research topic focuses on developing a low-carbon fuel alongside research into internal combustion engines that use the fuel. According to the global
transport outlook to 2050 by the International Energy Agency, 84% of vehicles globally will still make use of combustion engines in 2035. With the research project, the three companies are investigating an effective carbon dioxide reduction and the tech-
nologies behind it from a well-towheel perspective, considering every step in the fuel life cycle from oil well to wheels on the road. Saudi Aramco will develop a fuel based on a refinery process that results in lower carbon diox-
ide emissions, and Mazda and AIST will research and develop a high-efficiency engine. The joint research project is in line with the company’s ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030’ vision for technology development, announced in August 2017. — WR.
ARGENTINA has become the fifth country to manufacture the Navara bakkie as Nissan expands to keep up with global demand. The South American bakkie is built at the Alliance partner’s Renault’s Santa Isabel plant in Cordoba. The expansion forms part of Nissan’s announcement that it plans to increase sales of light commercial vehicles (what we call bakkies in South Africa) by 40% by 2022 globally. The Navara is also made in Spain, China, Mexico, Thailand and is sold in 180 countries. FAW most improved brand FAW has been named the most improved truck brand in the latest annual National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey. Market research firm Lightstone received 165 responses from commercial vehicle dealerships across the country. Although most commercial vehicle brands remained relatively constant or showed a slight decline, a significant incline in scores for FAW SA contributed to an overall improvement in the entire category. — Wheels Reporter.

For faster stylers Officially, the sDrive 20i is not a GTI S3 slayer SIBONELO MYENI THE recently launched X2 has had tongues wagging about its concept car lines, we tested the sDrive 20i to find out if there is more substance to the look. During our test week, the Beemer drew a lot of admiring glances and a lot of attention, particularly from younger people. Many deem the X2 as a GTI, S3 competitor, whereas its makers see it as more Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) like the X4 and X6. Our test unit was finished in black with a red leather interior, a combination that stuns but requires high maintenance to keep clean (being stunning is never easy). The highlights are the LED daytime lights, big-bore twin exhausts, BMW badge on the shoulder line, standard M Sports
package and the 19-inch wheels. The stunning design makes one wonder why other companies make non-interesting cars when they see BMW produce such cars as the X2. The interior has high quality fit and finish with a functional layout, however, we were disappointed with the lack of space age design after one sees the stunning outside. I would have expected BMW to give us a bit of more “forward” thinking layout, rather than the one we’ve gotten used to on BMWs. Still, the LED ambient lighting together with the panoramic sunroof are a must for style conscious buyers as they make for a Star Trek feel when driving at night. Dials are clear to see with the iDrive being one of the best ways to operate an infotainment system while on the move.
Our test unit also came with the very useful wireless charger on the armrest. Luggage space is more than enough for a family and the rear seats fold for added carrying space. The electric tailgate comes standard. A two-litre, four-cylinder engine makes 141 kW and 280 Nm, with power going to the front wheels via BMW’s seven-speed Dual-Clutch transmission. The engine is refined and tuneful when pushed, encouraging sporty driving. The exhaust note and turbo whoosh do excite — especially when the mode selector is in Sport. The transmission changes gears in a fraction of a second, meaning power delivery is always on point. With some spirited driving, we averaged 8,6 l/100 km, a far cry from the claimed 5,9 l/100 km
Used-car forces partner iMOTO Media, a provider of motoring media products since 2013, is proud to announce its new partnership with InspectaCar. InspectaCar has been a trusted name in the South African used-car market since 2002. Earlier this year, the brand was relaunched amid much fanfare. The main emphasis was to help dispel the notion that buying a used car is buying someone else’s problems. At InspectaCar, Mzansi used-car buyers can expect to receive high-quality products, exceptional service and peace of mind. All of these are priceless in these trying economic times. iMoto Media, through its own media and partner channels, interacts with millions of potential car buyers on a daily basis. The most celebrated of these is the Vuka Mzansi Motoring segment, which is broadcast on South Africa’s biggest radio station, Ukhozi FM, every Thursday at 7.45 am. The show covers important motoring matters, including information and advice aimed at potential car buyers — new and used — to assist them in avoiding unnecessary headaches. “Buying a pre-owned car should be as hassle-free as buying new,” said Sibonelo Myeni, managing member at iMoto Media and co-host of the Vuka Mzansi Motoring feature. “We have partnered with InspectaCar because we believe they are serious about improving the image of the used-car buying experience. They aim to bring customer confidence by offering second-hand cars
that are not second best. This partnership will ensure that millions of potential consumers can enjoy a hassle-free, used-car motoring experience.” “At InspectaCar, we would like to give our customers quality preowned cars that they can trust,” said Pertunia Sibanyoni, CEO of InspectaCar South Africa. “We are in the process of a multimillion rand revamp and rebranding exercise in all our dealerships around the country. The investment also carries through to our valued dealership staff whose purpose is to ensure customers enjoy an experience in buying a pre-owned car parallel to new car owners. “Having an esteemed partner in WesBank also speaks volumes about us, because it is one of the leading asset finance institutions in South Africa.” One of the key steps in attaining this target was the recent InspectaCar dealer conference held at Sun City where dealer representatives from around the country met to share strategies, set implementation targets and celebrate successes. The aim is to transform the usedcar market into a credible market, offering quality products with excellent back-up. The InspectaCar slogan: “Second-hand will never feel second best”, rings true from hereon and Mzansi buyers will be the better for it. — WR. • When not on radio, Sibonelo Myeni is also a Wheels correspondent.
KIA reveals hi-tech sound KIA Motors has revealed its nextgeneration Separated Sound Zone (SSZ) technology that allows each passenger of a vehicle to experience an audio stream tailored to their individual needs, including music, hands-free phone calls and vehicle alerts, while maintaining a headphone-free social space where they can converse freely. SSZ technology creates and controls the acoustic fields of the car, allowing the driver and each passenger to hear isolated sounds. The many speakers installed in the vehicle feature technology that can reduce or increase the audio levels of sound waves. This negates the overlap of sounds being heard in
each seat, without the need for headphones. “Customers in the autonomous navigation era will demand increasingly customisable entertainment options within their vehicles, which include technological innovations such as the Separated Sound System.” said Kangduck Ih, research fellow at KIA’s NVH Research Lab. With SSZ, hands-free phone calls can also be isolated, ensuring privacy when having important phone conversations. The technology can also eliminate unnecessary sounds for the passenger but provide them for the driver. The mass production system is expected to be ready within one to two years.
At about R652 500 for the base, BMW sDrive 20i is not just for the stylish, but enthusiastic drivers will feel right at home too. PHOTO: BMW but with ECO mode selected and less “spirited” driving, those claimed figures can be attained. As it’s a BMW, dynamic driving comes with the DNA and the X2 doesn’t disappoint with agility and good road holding. Pushed too hard into a corner, the front washes out a bit, something easily cured with some accelerator lift off. It can be unsettled on bumpy
roads but then the positive comes when pushing on winding, smooth roads where it comes alive. We achieved about eight seconds when conducting our iPhone-timed 0-100 km/h sprint and one can’t argue against the claimed 227 km/h top speed. The R652 477 base price for the sDrive 20i does come with the M Sport package as standard, but

From this group of eight aspiring race drivers, Shaheen Amlay and Bryce Pillay made it to the final duel in the third season of VW’s Driver Search Programme. The winner hopes to follow in the footsteps of Jonathan Mogotsi, who claimed his first Polo Cup win last year. PHOTO: MOTORPRESS
Reason to boast Volkswagen Driver Search programme reaches final phase ON the eve of Round 6 of the Extreme Festival at the Zwartkops Raceway, Volkswagen Motorsport could afford a moment to reflect on their involvement and successes in motorsport, both in the past as well as the future. For more than two decades, the Volkswagen Cup has thrilled crowds across the country and with the new generation of Polo GTis so evenly matched, it will continue to do so for some time to come. The VW team also has reason to smile when it comes to the country’s premier circuit racing formula, the Sasol GTC Championship. The legendary Golf GTi is the defending champion in the GTC2 category and continues to top the points table courtesy of Keagan Masters, and the VW factory driver Daniel Rowe has claimed the most wins in 2018 in the top GTC class from behind the wheel of his Jetta. A number of possible future champions received the opportunity of a lifetime when the innovative Volkswagen Driver Search Programme ended its first phase at the Zwartkops Raceway. The programme, which is now in its third season, has already yielded great re-
sults. “In fact, Volkswagen is renowned for finding and growing racing talent,” said Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “A number of former Volkswagen Cup drivers have all gone on to become champions and international stars in their own right such as the Van der Linde brothers, Kelvin and Sheldon as well as Jordan Pepper who are all making their mark in the international arena.” Locally, the young Driver Search Programme has already proved to be a huge success. Season 1 winner Jonathan Mogotsi joined the Volkswagen Cup competition in 2017 and managed to claim victory in his first season. The fact that Mogotsi is currently one of the frontrunners and championship contenders for 2018 is further testimony of the programme’s success. “A few days ago, we started with 16 new hopefuls who all had aspirations to follow in Jonathan’s footsteps. “Today, after a series of tough physical, mental and driving tests, we ended up with our final two,” continued Rowe. The candidates were thrown into the deep end, but then again, the reward is
massive so Volkswagen wanted to make sure that they will get the right person for the job. The 16 hopefuls were put through a number of challenges over the first two days of the event, which included a series of fitness tests, as well as the first taste of competitive driving at the Zwartkops Raceway. The programme consisted of other racing-related elements such as lectures on media and sponsorship, sport psychology, and the theory of driving. The top eight then continued to take on day three, a day filled with competitive driving activities after which the top four were announced. The four drivers who made it into the next phase were Taahir Moosajee, Terrance Khalo, Bryce Pillay and Shaheen Amlay. They experienced all the elements of a full racing weekend in front of a live crowd at Zwartkops, where Amlay and Pillay emerged the fastest at the end of the weekend. “Following further tests later in the year, we will end up with our 2018 winner,” said Rowe. — WR.
KZN rally will make dreams come true ALWYN VILJOEN ON October 27, a rather special race is being planned for Dalton, when the Natal Motorcycle and Car Cub (NMCC) will be hosting a regional rally under the banner of Motorsport South Africa (MSA). Organiser Dean Redelinghuys said what makes the race special is that it will be the first MSA race to invite drivers affiliated to World of Motorsport (Womza) to compete at the same event. The race will be hosted in
the Dalton area featuring six stages ranging from 13 km to 30 km, with the total racing kilometres being roughly 100 km. “We envisage a minimum of 40 competitors. The main service park will be at the Dalton Farmers Club. “This provides us with a great venue and the club will be selling food and drinks during the day to generate muchneeded income for them. “Added to this a local farmer, Mr Kurt Renken — whose son, Zane, recently died in a work-related incident — has given permission for all the
race vehicles to feature a picture of Zane, in memory of a much-respected competitor,” Redelinghuys said. Signs and Graphics of Pinetown will provide signage as well as erecting a start/finish ramp displaying the logos of all the parties involved. Reach For A Dream will also be part of the race. A one-kilometre stage has been prepared opposite the club where children will get to experience what it is like inside a rally car at full speed. The Reach for a Dream kids will be joined by pupils from Newton Technical
School in Pietermaritzburg. The boys are currently turning an old Golf body into the basis of a rally car with a roll cage and no excess weight. The plan is for the school to complete the car and race in it next year. Redelinghuys said the day was all about giving KZN’s many rally drivers an opportunity to race and to expose the budding racers to this sport.

After losing time in thick dust during a night stage, KZN’s Guy Botterill and co-driver Simon Vacy-Lyle pushed hard to win round 5 of the national rally at Bronkhorstspruit last weekend. PHOTO: MOTORPRESS
Dusty win for KZN pair TOYOTA Gazoo Racing rally racers Guy Botterill and co-driver Simon Vacy-Lyle recorded a clean run to claim victory on the HMC Electrothread Rally, held around Bronkhorstspruit last weekend. “We had a really fantastic event,” said an ecstatic Botterill after parking his Class R2N Toyota Etios in the parc ferme. “We won every stage save for Friday’s night stage, and the car ran absolutely faultlessly.” The Hillcrest-based pair tackled the event, round 5 of the 2018 South African National Rally Championship, with vigour. They won each of the Friday’s opening stages, building up a lead of 26 seconds after just three stages, putting a bit of breathing space between themselves and the second-placed crew of Richard Leeke and Henry Köhne (Class R2N Ford Fiesta). But then came the night stage, which the Toyota Gazoo Racing SA crew tackled as the seventh car on the road: “This wreaked havoc not only for us, but all the crews except the first car into the stage,” explained Botterill.
“The extremely dry and dusty conditions, together with a still, windless evening, made it impossible to drive at any sort of pace.” Despite the conditions, the Toyota Etios pairing set the second-fastest time on the stage, but lost 50 seconds to Leeke/Köhne, who were the first car on the road and not affected by dust. This meant that the Toyota Gazoo Racing SA crew ended Day 1 of the HMC Electrothread Rally with a deficit of 23,3 seconds, despite winning all but the last of the four opening stages. “We knew we were quick during the daylight hours, so we simply had to battle on,” said Botterill. The pair set about their task with characteristic determination and crossed the finish line two minutes and 12 seconds ahead of AC Potgieter and Nico Swartz in their VW Polo, followed by Jono van Wyk and Barry White in third place in their Ford Fiesta. Leeke and Köhne had to retire with mechanical issues, but will be back to race Hillcrest’s finest on round 6 of the national rally on September 28 and 29 around Secunda. — WR.
