Nissan’s Africa plans

VW and Lionesses of Africa look for women’s pitches ALWYN VILJOEN A QUARTER of Wheels readers are female, and it’s from them that Volkswagen wants a two-minute business pitch in partnership with the Lionesses of Africa women’s business network.

All female entrepreneurs over 18 who are part of the Lionesses of Africa network — regardless of their industry — can enter the competition for a first prize of R100 000, a second prize of R50 000 or a third prize of R25 000. All prizes also include a one-on-one,

up to one-hour mentoring session with a Lionesses of Africa leader. Volkswagen’s Lionesses Den competition started on July 1 and ends on August 2. The selected winners will be announced on August 21, during the Lionesses Lean-In event.

AS part of its Global Transformation Plan, Nissan AMI (Africa, Middle East and India) announced it will introduce eight new models, focusing on sports utility vehicles and affordable sedans to its markets while cutting non-sellers. Nissan chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta, said AMI will build on Nissan’s existing strengths with Alliance partners and leverage its manufacturing presence in South Africa, Egypt, India and Nigeria. “Africa, Middle East and India is an important region where we will target investment in existing strengths, including SUV, and bring eight new products to the market. “By driving efficiencies through the Alliance and focusing on core competencies, we will further increase the region’s profitability, especially in key markets including the Gulf, South Africa and Egypt,” said Gupta in a statement. Chair of the Africa, Middle East and India region, Guillaume Cartier, said the AMI region has enormous potential with some of the most dynamic and diverse automotive markets in the world. The drive to maximise profits entails cutting the models range by 20%. Looking forward to when the drive for zero emmissions will impact vehicle sales in Africa, AMI also plans to phase in Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility technologies plan which includes e-Power, EV and connected technologies. Gupta said the ‘leader-follower’ approach between alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi will enhance Nissan AMI’s efficiency and competitiveness.

Pietermaritzburg’s twice cross country champ, Lance Woolridge, has a goal to win the Dakar Rally. The 29-year-old has long paid his dues at the world’s toughest cross country race in South Ameria in 2014, managing the truckloads of spare parts required for the Ford-backed NWM team’s two racing Rangers (pictured). Since then the operations manager at NWM has claimed second in Brazil’s arduous Rally dos Sertões in 2016 and last year secured his second consecutive Class T title in SA’s cross country series with navigator Ward Huxtable. The NWM team, who export their Made-in-Maritzburg racing Rangers all over the world, are currently building an all-new FIA-class Ranger, with Ford’s turbocharged 3,5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine in place of the howling V8. This will be the first Ranger in the world to compete under the FIA’s new cross country regulations for vehicles with turbocharged petrol engines. “This is a very exciting project as it has enabled us to redesign the Ranger from the ground up, using all of our experience and success with the V8 Ranger,” said Woolridge. “We’ve nearly finished building the first vehicle and will begin testing soon, with the chassis for the second vehicle already in production.” He said when development work on the prototype is complete, the aim is to race the FIA Ranger internationally. “The Dakar Rally is the ultimate prize, of course, both for me and for the NWM team as a whole. That dream hasn’t changed, and I believe that with the new vehicle we will have a winning package. Competing in the Dakar Rally is very expensive, particularly when it comes to South African budgets, but with the right partners and sponsors and a long-term commitment to this campaign, I’m confident that we will be able to take on and beat the best teams in the world,” said Woolridge.
