‘Beat us if you can’ New Eicher trucks issue open challenge on fuel consumption EICHER is a new truck brand in South Africa that was launched at TruckX Expo at Kyalami last week by VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), a 2008 joint venture by Volvo Group and Eicher Motors. Vice president and head of VECV in South Africa, Surender Singh Rajpurohit, said Eicher trucks already operated in 30 countries, and they are known ev erywhere as “the king of mile age”. “Our campaign is based on the challenge, ‘beat me if you can’ — this is an open challenge — that is how confident we are,” said Rajpurohit. He said South Africa is the 31st country in which Eich er will sell, adding that it is a stra tegic market for VECV. “The company plans to con tinuously invest in the introduc

tion of country specific products and aftermarket infrastructure,” Rajpurohit said. Commenting on aftersales support, he said Eicher trucks have joined hands with Bidvest Panalpina Logistics (BPL) as their 3PL partner. “A huge investment has al ready been made to ensure parts availability. Currently the ware house has a parts availability of over 2 600 line items.” Rajpurohit said Eicher trucks will initially be sold and serviced at 14 dealers of wellestablished dealership groups such as AAD Group, BB Motor group, Billson Trucks, CMH Group, Fleet Dy namics, Imperial Group & Pre mier Truck and Bus. He said VECV brings together, the Volvo Group’s global expert ise and worldclass technology along with the innovative engi

neering and proven DNA of fuel efficiency from Eicher. In the first phase of its intro duction, Eicher is introducing the Pro Series of haulage trucks, which will be followed by con struction tippers. The haulage trucks have been tested for more than 500 000 kilometres across Africa and Asia, and subjected to rigorous endurance and per formance testing for over 200 000 km in South Africa. “This truck has been put into actual usage across various appli cations of a few well renowned fleet operators. “Testing results have turned out extremely positive especially in terms of fuel efficiency and up time of the trucks,” he said. The Eicher Pro is powered with a nextgeneration engine with common rail technology and Volvo Group Engine Man

agement System (EMS 3.0). Speaking to a few of the diesel mechanics who have been testing the trucks, Wheels learned Eich er’s boasts of worldclass tech nology that delivers the best bal ance between load and fuel effi ciencies are well founded. And having poked and prod ded the cabins of the Eicher Pro series trucks as well as the tipper, I can vouch for their comfortable design. All have air conditioning and heaters and reportedly meet AIS 029 safety standards, thanks to airbrakes, ABS and exhaust brakes. The Eicher trucks will be as sembled at the Nissan UD plant in Rosslyn, north of Pretoria. MD of UD Trucks Gert Swane poel told Wheels the Eicher trucks from India will not be competing in the same niche as

MAZDA CONDUCTS AIRBAG RECALL MAZDA Southern Africa is conduct ing a repair procedure to replace the driverside airbag and/or the passengerside airbag inflator with an improved unit on the possibly affected vehicles. This recall follows investigative recalls by Mazda in Japan and North America for three different types of Takata Corporationmanu factured inflators and although no cases of abnormal deployment or dangerous flaws have been found in any Mazda vehicles, the compa ny had deemed an extended for mal recall campaign necessary. To date it has been recorded that about 19 000 units across

three models are affected in South Africa. These cars were produced from 2003 with VIN numbers starting with MM6DE, JM6GG and JMZSE and are the: • Mazda2, • Mazda6, and • RX8. Although the number of affect ed vehicles will be subject to fur ther review and may change, Maz da SA urges all owners with possi bly affected vehicles to contact the Mazda SA Dealer Network or the Mazda SA Customer Care Cen tre on 086 006 9700 or email customercare@mazda.co.za.

NEXT weekend sees the high speed World Rally Champi onship held in Finland. This is a rally where Hyun dai Motorsport has yet to claim a podium finish, but if the Korean brand’s drivers and cars continue to dice as they have done to date, a place on the podium is not unrealistic. Who would’ve thought this even 10 years ago, when Hyundai had to regain local buyers’ trust when exHyun dai SA boss and Zim mining magnate Billy Rautenbach was liquidated? Back then, the Korean com pany still aimed to be counted among the world’s top five car makers. It has long achieved this aim and today the compa ny aims to win rallies. Hyundai Motorsport has done so three times now in the 2017 FIA World Rally Cham pionship, with the most re cent win in Poland, with Thi erry Neuville and Hayden Pad don securing the team’s first 12 result in WRC since the 2014 Rallye Deutschland. Dani Sordo completed Ral ly Poland in fourth place over all, making it the most suc cessful combined result for Hyundai Motorsport in the team’s history. Next weekend’s spectacular jumps in Finland may seem worlds removed from Hyun dai’s allnew Elantra, which after all competes with the To yota Corolla in the sedate ex ecutive family saloon niche. But you should have seen my family jump into the red seats of the cherry red Elantra when it arrived for a test drive, courtesy of Hyundai South Af ca. And with my fingers play ing the flappy paddles to make the most of the 150 kW turbo charged petrol engine via the sevenspeed dual clutch trans mission up Maritzburg’s hills, I certainly felt as if I could be at least be a pace car driver for Neuville and co. This is certainly one sedan that earned its Sport badge on the rear. The previous genera tion of the Elantra won the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists

The Hyundai Elantra has come a long way, and while it will not make the jumps that World Rally Championship drivers routinely take, my family certainly jumped into the plush cabin with speed when I invited them for a test drive the new DCT Sport edition, which sells for R399 900. PHOTO: QUICKPIC Car of the Year (Coty) award in 2012. In my mind, this 2017 model has what it takes to compete in terms of innova tion and value for money against any vehicle out there for another Coty. UNDER THE HOODS Four models are on sale: The Elantra 1.6 Executive manual and Elantra 1.6 Executive au tomatic (both driven by a 1,6litre naturally aspirated petrol engine making 94 kW/ 154 Nm); the Elantra 2.0 Elite, with a naturally aspirated 2li tre petrol engine making 115 kW/195 Nm; and the range topping Elantra 1.6 TGDI Elite DCT Sport, with a pow erful 1,6litre turbocharged petrol engine making 150 kW/265 Nm from 1 500 rpm. The Elantra 1.6 Executive comes with a choice between a sixspeed manual or auto matic transmission, while the Elantra 2.0 Elite is only availa ble with a sixspeed automatic

gearbox. Service intervals are 15 000 km for all engines. Even the base model Elan tra has an eightinch hireso lution infotainment system, rear park assist, six airbags, Isofix latching points for child seats, cruise control and at tractive alloy standard fea tures. Electric side mirrors and windows are also standard convenience features across the range. The Elantra also easily passed my litmus test for a car’s digital compatibility — to pair with a smartphone within four button presses. The standard eightinch touch screen includes satellite navigation, provides a USB Mirror Link for Android cell phones, HDMI connectivity for iPhones to view the iPhone screen, handsfree Bluetooth telephone link with remote controls on the steering wheel, Bluetooth music streaming and AUX and USB input ports. All four derivatives’ seats

are covered in leather, and are made of SoyFoa, an environ mentally friendly seating foam that substitutes petroleum based polyol with soybean oil. Sales and operations direct or of Hyundai Automotive South Africa Stanley Ander son said in a statement the new Elantra will again fill an important slot in Hyundai’s model lineup for car buyers who are looking for a family sedan. “And when its cost is com pared to the specificationad justed prices of its competi tors, the new Elantra is bound to be the choice of many dis cerning buyers.” Prices start at R299 900 and top out at a very competitive R399 900 for the Elantra Sport. A fiveyear or 150 000 km warranty and additional two year powertrain warranty is part of the standard package, which also includes fiveyear or 150 000 km roadside assist ance and a fiveyear or 90 000 km service plan.

Hino, Toyota and Lexus tops for dealers THE National Automobile Dealers Association (Nada) tracks dealer satisfaction with their respective auto motive brand in SA. In 2017, a total of 40 in dependently tracked brands formed part of the survey, with 1 319 completed re sponses received (1 146 in the Passenger and LCV seg

ments). The survey includes the major Passenger and LCV brands in South Africa and is distributed by Light stone Consumer. The 2017 Nada Dealer Sat isfaction Index (DSI) deliv ered a strong result for To yota South Africa Motors. Taking centre stage, truck brand Hino came out on top

in the Commercial category with a Platinum award (a newly created category for a score of over 85%). Hino achieved 85,4% — increasing their score by 1,8% from 2016, and moved into the number one position in the Commercial category. Toyota achieved Gold sta tus for the second consecu

tive year in the Passenger and LCV category. Luxury brand Lexus achieved a silver award, delivering a score of above 70%. Toyota SA Mo tors thanked its dealer net work in a statement for their continued efforts and support in delivering the best possible service to To yota owners. — WR.

MOTORING BAKKIES WitnessWheels

For Captains of Industry SA’s topselling bakkie has two lesser spotted cousins, Alwyn Viljoen took them into the forest ALWYN VILJOEN

Ford Ranger (147 kW, 470 Nm) There are many reasons why this is now South Africa’s bestselling bakkie, with 3 333 new owners in SA during June and 5 631 more units exported. The smooth engines, the 4x4 ability and the ergonomic cabin are just some of them. A low price is not. The 3.2 double cab 4x4 XLT auto goes for about R594 000. PHOTOS: FILE

JMC Vigus (88 kW, 290 Nm) JMC builds Fords in China which explains why the Vigus looks so familiar. The 2.4 turbo diesel 4WD SLX sells for about R376 000. This is as low as it gets for a wellappointed workhorse, with proper tiehooks on the outside load bin and Bosch and Ford tech under the hood.

Mazda BT50: (147 kW, 470 Nm) The BT50 shares everything except the badge and those curves with the Ranger. But where Ford merges seamlessly with any smartphone, the BT50’s older Bluetooth architecture doesn’t. To scroll the menus on the tiny screen of the onboard computers requires pressing a tiny plastic nub behind the steering wheel. But the 3.2 double cab 4x4 SLE auto sells for just over R555 000, which means the canny captain of industry can get last year’s Ford technology at a discount. Last month, only 33 people were this canny. 22860 0

IT used to be that South Africa only had two types of bakkie driv ers — those in a Toyota Hilux and those in other bakkies. But with the Ford Ranger be ing SA’s topselling bakkie since January, we must now update this list to three types of bakkie driv ers — the oke in the Ranger, fol lowed by the bloke in the Hilux, followed by those in an Isuzu or Nissan NP300; and then came the lesserselling bakkies, which range from the Amarok to the Tunland. Of note among these other bakkies are the Mazda BT50 and the JMC Vigus, because they are, of course, cousins to the Ranger. The question is, do they offer via ble options to the Ranger? I have now taken them all into the mountains that make Pieter maritzburg such a playground for mountainbikers, using an Isuzu KB300 automatic as the bench mark. The results up The Slope and around the gravel corners was six of one and half a dozen of the oth er. Even with 180 Nm less power than the Ranger, the 2,4 Vigus carried its load, well, vigorously while the 90 Nm lesser power Is uzu was built to hunker down with a load. But the BT50 is the bargain among these bakkies, de spite older tech in the dashboard.

Isuzu KB 300 DTEQ (130 kW, 380 Nm). The Isuzu is not a cousin of Ford, but as SA’s third bestselling bakkie it makes a good comparison. Its price of about R563 000 seems high, but as many farmers know, there is a steep discount for the asking, which makes Isuzu SA’s unsung bakkie hero on dirt roads.

M{zd{ 2, M{zd{ 6 & M{zd{ RX-8 Airbag recall extended This is a publlic notice to all owners of Mazda2, Mazda6 an nd Mazda RX-8 vehicles produced from 2003 with VIN Numbers starting with MM6DE, JM6GG and JMZSE.

A new Merc bakkie coming to town MercedesBenz on Wednesday launched its new XClass, but as this 1956 Merc 180D bakkie owned by Gary Bowes shows, it will not be Merc’s first bakkie in South Africa. And many a Unimog owner would argue the ’mog is and will always be Merc’s real workhorse. Daimler and the RenaultNissan Alliance invested over R12 billion in a new joint manufacturing in central Mexico to build the XClass and the Renault Alaskan bakkie on the new Navara chassis. More details next week. PHOTO: FILE

The ab bove mentioned vehicles are being recalled due to possible faulty airbag infllators that may cause the aiirbag to not deploy correctly, which may lead to injury. We urge all owners of Mazda2, Mazda6 and Mazda RX-8 models that could possibly be affected to please contact the Mazda Dealership Network or Mazda SA’s Customer Care Centre on 0860 069 700 or email customercare@mazda.co.za. EPACE: ‘IMPROVED ROLL CONTROL IN ALL CONDITIONS’

Standard of racing at Dezzi’s has world champ eager to be back COLIN WINDELL AFTER their epic battle at the last round of the KZN Regional Motorcy cle Championships, it looked set to be another titanic struggle between Blaze Baker and Malcolm Rudman for honours in the DEOD Super GP Champions Trophy that made its an nual stop on the national tour at Dez zi Raceway at the weekend. Indeed, in the opening laps of the first race for the Super600 Class it was Baker (Uncle Andy Racing Suz uki) holding a slender lead from Rud man (Montclair Motorcycles Kawa saki) with Steven Odendaal (Petra Yamaha) in uncomfortably close at tendance. With only a couple of laps to go, Odendaal made a demon dive through for second place to finish just 0,3 seconds behind Baker and a nose ahead of Rudman. Fourth was William Friend on the second Uncle Andy Racing Suzuki, with Byron Bester (HiTech Ele ments Kawasaki) in fifth place. In the second race it went pear shaped for Rudman, who had a scary moment at the hairpin on the open ing lap and dropped back in the field, unable to get into podium conten tion again against the talented field of riders. With Rudman battling to get back into contention, the race up front was frenetic with Odendaal taking full advantage and capitalising on a small error by Baker to lead the field across the line a full five seconds ahead of Baker with Friend in third place, Bester fourth and Aidan Lieb enberg (Shop #74 Kawasaki) in fifth place ahead of Rudman. Overall for the day it was Odendaal from Baker, Friend, Rudman and Bester. In the “big banger” Super GP class for 1 000cc motorcycles, Clinton Seller (Anassis Racing MiWay Ya maha) took a fairly comfortable 0,7 second win over the hardcharging Greg Gildenhuys (Autohaus Kawa saki), the pair a long way out in front of thirdplaced Allann Jon Venter (Lekka Racing Yamaha) with David McFadden (Sandton Auto BMW) fourth ahead of Michael White (Consortium Shipping Yamaha).

Race Two was shaping up to be a knifeedge battle between Seller and Gildenhuys until Seller threw it away and crashed his Yamaha — able to recover and get going again but con fined to a fifth place finish. Out front, Gildenhuys capitalised and maintained a sixsecond gap over Venter, who was under constant pressure throughout from White and McFadden. The consolation for Sell er was a third place on the overall standings for the day behind Venter and Gildenhuys, who topped the log with a 46point haul. Running in the same race were the SuperMasters contenders and here Dezzi’s own Jade Gutzeit (Dezzi Du cati) was convincing in both races to take top honours for the day. Second overall went to Johnny Krieger (Lekka Racing Yamaha) with Beau Levy (Motos Blu Cru Yamaha) third. The Super Junior class also pro duced some mesmerising racing with Tyreece Roberts on the Uncle Andy Racing KTM taking the flag in the first race from Taric van der Mer we (Evolvoe Nation KTM) and Ri cardo Otto (Otto Racing KTM) in third place. In the second race it was Van der Merwe who took the win from Otto and Kevin Snyman (KTM) with Rob erts a nonstarter due to mechanical problems. The Formula Xtreme races pro duced some good dices, with the first race going the way of Luan van Zyl (Durban Used Spares Honda) just 0,5 seconds ahead of Keagan Wessels (Moto Rental Supreme KTM) at the finish, followed by Cameron Venter (Deons Electrical Services Kawa saki) and Sandra Shelley, also Kawa saki mounted. The Breakfast Run riders saw Clin ton MasseyHicks on the Rokkit Dig ital Honda take line honours in the first race from Stephen Puren (Kawa saki) and Erich Tonsing (Claim Au tomation Honda). Venter won race Two by a long way from Van Zyl and Shelley, who were ahead of Wessels and David Pienaar (Yamaha).

THE new Jaguar EPace last week landed in the Guinness World Records after a 15,3metre long jump complete with a 270degree ‘barrel roll’ (shown here in a time lapse photo) with stunt driver Terry Grant at the wheel. The EPace is the newest member of Jaguar’s SUV family and joins the 2017 World Car of the Year, the Jaguar FPACE, which was itself launched with a spectacular world record looptheloop in 2015. The ramps were modelled using CAD design and the most difficult part to get right was the 160 km/h exit speed. Jaguar’s adaptive suspension system took care of the landing, loading the suspension and adjusting the damping “for improved roll control and agility in all conditions” as Jaguar states in its EPace brochures.
