Unimog drivers want to see XClass do 45° ALWYN VILJOEN WHEN I told a group of Unimog owners about the new Mercedes Benz bakkie that had its interna tional launch in Cape Town last week, they asked “why?” That Daimler predicts huge growth in demand for double cabs in the next decade and wants to ride this wave with the world’s first premium bakkie did not wash with this crowd. That a team of 25 designers spent over a year to ensure the XClass is the first truly premium bakkie didn’t impress them ei ther, nor did the hard work by the suspension engineers that made the track of the XClass seven centimetres wider than that of the new Navara so that the plush Merc double cab basically only shares a chassis and a fuel tank with the Nissan. What did manage to raise an eyebrow was the claim that the
XClass can climb a 100% gradi ent. In the wild, this translates in to a 45° slope, which is steep even for mountain goats and Unimog drivers. “I would like to see that done,” said one of the members of the Unimog Freunde Club of South Africa, who will be celebrating the 71st anniversary of this Swiss Army knife of trucks at Pretoria’s Cars in the Park on August 6. The member had just watched a new U4000 climb the 45° slope at Gerotek, (inset) a feat that no one else attempted. “Been there done that, be sides, too many things will fall out,” was the explanation. Club president Stefan Coetzee said between 30 to 35 of these camping Unimogs will gather to celebrate Unimog’s 71st. “It will be quite an occasion for us and we will have a very repre sentative turnout of the Uni mog’s entire history. Unlike the XClass, which uses a choice of one Nissanbased or three MercedesBenz engines, today’s Unimog uses the OM 904 LA turbo diesel engine from the Axor truck that does not mind SA’s dirty diesel. Its wheel track still spans 1,27 metres, as did the original

Unimogs which were numbered from 401, and were used as nim ble, fourwheel drive tractors here to do forestry work and transport railway workers, travel ling on the rails. Today’s U4000 and U5000 variants are much larger but still designed to deliver the best in offroad and onroad efficiency, whether it is to fight fires in woods or fix railways. In fact, one of the two 2017
“Hochgeländegängig”, or highly mobile cross country Unimogs in SA, is used to shunt the Gautrain. Mario Alvelos, business devel opment manager at Mercedes Benz, said the Unimog’s secret sauce is in its hub reduction, but the truck’s other super powers, like a 1,2 fording depth and a quick reverse button to rock the ’mog out of a jam all help this ve hicle to become “several trucks in one”, from a fire fighter carry
ing 10 tons to a stable cherry pick er under high voltage wires. Alve los said SA had the biggest recre ational Unimog club in the world. But due to their starting price of some R1,7 million, few families can afford a new Unimog. Which finally answers that “why?” The XClass promises to be a double cab at least as capable as Merc’s GWagon, more com fortable than the ’mog and cheaper than both.

MAHINDRA ALSO SELLS FARM SKILLS
Tpod needs no driver
AS today’s teenagers in de veloped markets increasingly say no thanks to the ex penses of owning a car, ve hicle makers who want to stay in business will do very well to look at wider needs of markets in developing countries. Mahindra is doing just this in Nigeria, where it partnered with Farm Tech Prosperity to enable small farmers to plant, harvest and transport to market their produce. Springfield Agro Limited, a Kewalram Chanrai Group company, in partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra, last week announced its collaboration with Katsina state government, and launched the FarmToFolk initiative. Ashok Thakur, vice presi dent and head of Africa Business, said Mahindra & Mahindra have moved be yond just selling tractors and the idea behind launch ing Gromost Centres is to further boost local employ ment, aid local sourcing, disseminate knowledge, en hance skill sets and offer custom made solutions.” Mahindra & Mahindra is the largest tractor manufac turer in the world and also builds its range of small but robust tractors and agricul tural implements in Nigeria.
New electric robot delivery truck from Sweden heralds a new era in transport ALWYN VILJOEN MEET the Tpod, every truck driver’s nightmare. The Tpod is an electric, self driving small truck that is part of a new transportation system comprising charging stations and remote control of a small fleet of trucks by one driver. Swedish company Einride un veiled the fullscale prototype of the Tpod in Visby, on the island of Gotland, during the “Almed alsveckan”, Sweden’s most im portant forum in politics/trans portation on July 4. Einride was listed along with Peloton, Embark, KeepTruckin, and OnTruck as one of the top five companies that are disrupt ing the road freight industry. Einride’s CEO Robert Falck presented the Tpod, saying it marks a global transition from heavy, noisy trucks with mon strous emissions and bad work ing conditions to emissionfree, noise reduced trucks that allow workers to operate on a standard schedule closer to home. Each TPod should measure about seven metres in length and can load 15 standard pallets for a maximum payload of 18 000 kg. Its 200 kWh battery pack has a claimed range of 200 km on one charge. Falck said the question he re ceived many times during the

For now, the market is not quite ready for a fleet of driverless trucks running around cities un der control of a faraway opera tor, so these new types of trucks will instead drive themselves, ac cording to a statement by Ein ride. Einride plans to road test the Tpod later this year to deliver
goods between the Swedish cit ies of Gothenburg and Helsing borg. This test road is about 219 km long and includes city and rural driving. Einride then hopes sell 200 Tpods to trans port goods in Sweden by 2020. This sounds like a very ambi tious goal, but is in line with the predictions that cheap ride shar ing — be it on scooters, in cars or for loads in trucks — will be
the new normal by 2030, as re ported in a May report by Re thinkX titled “Rethinking Trans portation 20202030”. The report warns that local as sembly of electric vehicles will disrupt transportation systems around the world, and lead to the rapid collapse of sales of the in ternalcombustion engine and fossil oil industries. • alwyn.viljoen@witness.co.za
UD plant building a new trucking legend UD Trucks employees from the company’s head office and its assembly plant in Rosslyn early in June sent the last unit of the legendary UD55 to UD100 Medium Duty range off the line at the Rosslyn plant. This series has now been re placed by the new Croner MDT range, which also as sembled at Rosslyn, north of Pretoria. Many diesel mechanics be moan the end of this era, for while the UD55 and UD100 are heavier on diesel than their modern counterparts, they are also easier to fix. “The UD55 to UD100 range served our customers loyally for more than 20 years,” Gert Swanepoel, managing direct or of UD Trucks Southern Af rica, said in a statement. “This is one product range that we can truly say is a legend in its own time. It consistently achieved more than 20% market share in its segment

when the original range was introduced,” said Aubrey Rambau, Rosslyn plant gener al manager. “So not only are we cele brating a legendary series, but also our legendary staff who have ensured the range’s on going quality and success.” Looking ahead to truck sales for the rest of the year, Swanepoel said continued
business resilience to over come some of the larger hur dles currently present in the market, is contributing to some positive sales results in some of the market segments. He said that Stats SA re cently released some interest ing data on the local transport sector for the first quarter of 2017. “It showed that the indus try’s total turnover reduced by 2,9% versus the fourth quarter of 2016, while inven tories reduced by 9,6%, and capital expenditure declined by 13,1%. “If one compares that to the stats from the first quarter of 2016, the transport sector’s turnover increased by 12,8%, thus a clear indication of rough waters ahead,” ex plained Swanepoel. “We are awaiting the re lease of the second quarter’s data from Stats SA to see if some stability will return to the market.” — WR.

New sixspeed autobox lets Duster simply eat sand dunes The ‘Cube’, for Continental Urban mobility Experience. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
CONTINENTAL’S ROBOTAXI CONTINENTAL has built a demo robotaxi to enable driverless mobility in cities. Named the Cube, for Continental Urban mobility Experience, the self driving vehicle is currently un dergoing trials at Continental’s Frankfurt plant. Better known for its tyres, the company said it also has vast experience in sensors, control units, software algorithms, braking systems and powertrain technologies to apply on robotaxis. The Cube will be on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show from September 14.
THE Renault Duster has seen over 12 000 sales since its 2013 launch, many of them to rental agencies, where the operators sing this tough little sport ute’s praises. Now Renault has added a sec ond clutch in the automatic gearbox to ensure tourists rent ing a Duster can kick dust in the eyes of any manual 4x4 in the desert. Renault said in a state ment the Renault Duster range has been further enhanced with the introduction of the new Ef ficient Dual Clutch (EDC) au tomatic model. Dualclutch gearboxes do not have torque converters, making them more efficient than nor mal oneclutch auto boxes. Renault’s EDC has six for ward ratios with the ideal gear selected by an electronic con trol unit. The EDC is mated ex clusively to the 1.5 dCi engine with an output of 80 kW and 250 Nm, delivering a claimed
fuel consumption of 4,8 litres/ 100 km. Renault said this “dry” dual clutch system combines the comfort of an automatic and the responsiveness of a manual — offering flexibility and fuel efficiency. From experience with auto matic transmissions on the Ka lahari’s sand dunes, we can add that the sixspeed EDC will also enable the Duster to keep going over sand instead of digging in. In fact, the 4x4 Duster has re markable offroad capabilities, with a ground clearance of 21 cm and good approach and departure angles. Like most allwheel drive cars today, the Duster comes with three transmission modes. 2WD allows for the engine torque to be distributed to the front wheels. Push the lock button and the engine’s torque gets distribu tion to all four wheels. Automatic mode sends the

Audi’s software patch hopes to save diesel AUDI — German automaker Audi says it will fit up to 850 000 diesel cars with new software to improve their emissions performance, follow ing a similar move by rival Daimler. Audi, a unit of Volkswagen, an nounced the voluntary retrofitting programme last Friday. The company said in a statement that it “aims to maintain the future viability of diesel engines” and be lieves the programme “will counter act possible bans on vehicles with diesel engines”. The company did not state by how much the new software will limit the
engine’s output to make the toxic mix of gasses from the tailpipe more acceptable in Europe. The free programme, which will apply to Europe and other markets outside the U.S. and Canada, applies to cars with sixcylinder and eight cylinder diesel engines. Daimler earlier said it will volun tarily recall three million Mercedes Benz cars with diesel engines in Eu rope to improve their emissions per formance. Diesels have been under a cloud since Volkswagen admitted equipping vehicles with emissions cheating software. — AFPWR.

Battle of the brothers KZN’s Woolridge brothers chasing 22 points behind Mpu’s Horn brothers COLIN MILEMAN HARRISMITH is renowned for being icy cold in the middle of winter, but it will be the scene of a heated battle between the top Class T contenders when the SA Cross Country Series (SACCS) descends on the small farming town tomorrow and Saturday. As the fourth round of the 2017 championship, the Harrismith 400 starts the second half of the season, and the Ford Neil Wool ridge Motorsport (NWM) Puma Lubricants entries are involved in an almighty battle for glory with three events remaining. After scoring second place overall at the Botswana Desert Race in June, Lance Woolridge and Ward Huxtable (T34) slot ted into second place in the Class T title chase, equal on 76 points with teammates Gareth Wool ridge and Boyd Dreyer (T77) in an identical Ford NWM Puma Lubricants Ranger. This places the Woolridge brothers 22 points behind the Horn brothers from Malalane, Johan and Werner, in a Toyota Hilux. Accordingly, a fierce battle is anticipated between the two crews from the moment the flag drops on the 48 km qualifying loop for the Harrismith 400 to morrow. Following an impressive win in race two in Botswana, the team’s third entry, comprising former rally stars Henk Lategan and Bar

ry White, got their campaign back on track and moved into sixth place in the rankings with 48 points. The newcomers to the series have shown outstanding pace in their debut season, and are aim ing to use this to their advantage in an effort to overhaul rivals Ja son Venter/Vince van Alleman (Toyota Hilux) and Hennie de Klerk/Achim Bergmann (VW Amarok), who are tied with a slender threepoint advantage over the Ford crew. “The Class T championship has turned into a threeway bat
tle between Lance, Gareth and the Malalane Toyota crew, and it is crucial that we score maximum points in Harrismith to maintain our strong momentum this year,” said NWM team principal Neil Woolridge. “We’ve had some good results in Harrismith before, and are hoping to maximise the superb performance and reliability we’ve had with our Rangers this year. “Although we had to do a large amount of work on the vehicles after Botswana, this was mainly to repair the cosmetic damage,
and we will be going all out for victory in this crucial race,” Woolridge said. “As always, punctures will play a critical role in deciding the out come of the race, as well as the championship. “Our drivers need to be fast but not make mistakes if we’re going to take the fight to the Horn brothers.” The Harrismith 400 will be based at the Eeram Farmers Complex on the outskirts of Har rismith, which includes the race headquarters, start/finish and the designated service park.
Competitors face a short 48 km qualifying loop, starting at 2 pm tomorrow, followed by a compact 200 km route that starts at 8 am on Saturday and will be completed twice, separat ed by a compulsory 20minute service halt between loops. Fans can follow the action live on the RallySafe app for Apple and Android devices. The app can be downloaded free of charge from the relevant app store, and enables enthusi asts to track the cars on a detailed map, download split times and access results.
New records expected as drivers fly in ‘Finnish Grand Prix’ THE weekend’s Rally Finland is one of the most spectacular rac ing events on the calendar. Dubbed the “Finnish Grand Prix”, the rally is mostly over smooth gravel roads that are kind on cars, but the highspeed na ture of the fast and flowing stages sees the cars fly between jumps that reward only the bravest crews. Pace notes have to be per fect in order to judge the speed and positioning of the car over blind crests that hide a following corner. With the World Rally Cham pionships closing up following Rally Poland, competition will again be fierce at the head of the field on Saturday. Sébastien Ogier still leads the title race in his MSport Ford Fi esta but Hyundai’s top gun, Thi erry Neuville, is hot on his heels. Others to watch include Ogier’s teammate Ott Tänak, local hero JariMatti Latvala — one of three Finns in the Toyota squad — and last year’s winner Citroën driver Kris Meeke, who set a new speed record en route to winning the Rally Finland

HUSQVARNA RIDERS RULE IN VALLEY HUSQVARNA South Africa motocross star Richie van der Westhuizen made Piet ermaritzburg his own at the weekend when he won three out of the four motos he started, at a muddy and slippery Thunder Valley MX Nationals. Van der Westhuizen took both MX1 wins and the sec ond heat of MX2 too, while Caleb Tennant took second in the first heat of MX2, riding as substitute to the injured Maddy Malan. “I had a great day at a gnarly Pietermaritzburg na tional,” Van der Westhuizen said. “Besides a subpar ride in MX2 heat one, it was an amazing day — I managed three wins out of four starts and we won the 450 day overall. I felt strong the whole day, my Husqvarnas performed brilliantly throughout the weekend and I absolutely loved the track. A big thank you is due to my team and to my sponsors!” Tennant, meanwhile, en joyed a positive day with a second in the first MX2 race aboard the factory Husqvar na before ending eighth in race two to claim fifth over all. “Race one was good, but we could have managed better in heat two,” Tennant said. “I really enjoyed work ing with the team and the extrabackup, and look for ward to ramping up to an even better result next time around.” Husqvarna Motorcycles brand manager Fred Fen sham was delighted with his team’s performance while he was in Sibiu, Romania, with Brett Swanepoel as the SA rider prepares the Red Bull Romaniacs this week end.
