Emperor Claudius (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus ) was born at Lugdunum (modern day Lyon) in Roman Gaul, where his father was stationed as a military legate. He was the first Roman emperor to be born outside Italy.

August 4, 1704

During the War of the Spanish Succession, Britain took control of Gibraltar after Spain surrendered. In the peace negotiations Gibraltar was ceded to Britain and “the Rock” subsequently became a British colony and a symbol of British naval strength.

Thirty-three workers became trapped after a mine in the Atacama Desert of Chile collapsed. The successful rescue took 69 days, attracting international attention.

August 6, 1945

The United States becomes the only nation to use atomic weaponry during wartime when it drops an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed and another 35,000 are injured as a direct result of the blast. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout.

August 8, 1963

Armed robbers stole £2.6 million from the Glasgow-London Royal Mail Train near Bridego Bridge, north of London. Less than £400,000 of the “The Great Train Robbery“ haul was eventually recovered. Six of the robbers escaped punishment in one way or another, although Ronnie Biggs did return to the UK in 2001 whereupon he was arrested.

The foundations of the bell tower in Pisa were laid. Work on the ground floor of the white marble campanile formally began five days later. The soft soil of clay, fine sand and shell that caused the leaning and brought the Tower to the verge of collapse also helped it survive at least 4 earthquakes as it means the Tower does not vibrate with earthquake ground motion.

After more than two centuries as a royal palace, the Louvre is opened as a public museum in Paris by the French revolutionary government. Today, the museums’ collection is one of the richest in the world, with artwork and artifacts representative of 11,000 years of human civilization and culture.

August 15, 1969

Woodstock music festival opens on a patch of farmland in White Lake near the New York town of Bethel. As the gates opened more than 400,000 people were clamouring to get in and those without tickets simply walked through gaps in the fences. Eventually forced to make the event free of charge, Woodstock had left its promoters nearly bankrupt, but their ownership of the film and recording rights more than compensated for the losses.

While salmon fishing near the Klondike River in Canada’s Yukon Territory, George Carmack reportedly spots nuggets of gold in a creek bed. His lucky discovery sparks the last great gold rush in the American West.

The robotic U.S. spacecraft Viking 1, built to explore the surface of Mars, was launched. Just under one year later it landed on Chryse Planitia, a flat lowland region in the northern hemisphere of the planet, and sent back the first close-up photographs of the rust-coloured Martian surface.

Believed to be under the influence of his mother Catherine de Medici, King Charles IX of France orders the assassination of Huguenot Protestant leaders in Paris, setting off a frenzy of killing that results in the massacre of tens of thousands of Huguenots all across France.

Matthew Webb becomes the first known person to successfully swim the English Channel. 27 year old Captain Webb accomplished the gruelling 21-mile crossing, which really entailed 39 miles of swimming because of tidal currents, in 21 hours and 45 minutes.
