Each day, as cheerful students came to school, they looked up to the crest and waved to greet the very special lion who helped guard and protect them and their teachers. The lion loved seeing all the students smiling, laughing, learning, and working hard at school. He roared loudly with happiness when each student found their own “spark of genius.

As the years went by, Dwight School grew. It became bigger and bigger, and students became busier and busier. Many of them forgot to look up at the crest each morning. Many of them forgot to wave to the lion. He still roared, but fewer children heard him as they rushed from class to class. The lion began to feel a little sad. One day, students stopped looking up and waving altogether. Ever-determined to guard and protect the School and children, the Dwight lion always stood tall and proud, but eventually he stopped roaring completely. He stayed inside the crest all day and was as quiet as a mouse.

The lion and Dwight School were lucky to have a great friend a wonderful tiger. He loved the school and children as much as the lion did, and the tiger visited often to help spread school spirit. He played with students, roared, and cheered when they participated in sports, and came to all school events, just like the lion had done years before.

One day during this past summer when all Dwight students were on vacation, the lion began to roar. His booming voice was very loud ... but it also sounded sad.
who had been silent for ages
The tiger heard his friend and asked, “What’s wrong, lion? Why are you sad?” The lion said that he missed all the students waving to him and joining in all the fun at school events. The lion didn’t want to stay inside the crest and be silent any more.

The tiger listened closely to the lion and thought about how he could help his friend. He said to the lion, “You have been the proud Dwight lion for 140 years. I think that you should do more than just guard and protect everyone. It’s the perfect time for you to raise Dwight School spirit and cheer students on with your loud roar and deep sense of school pride just like you did all those years ago.” The lion was overjoyed with the tiger’s suggestion. He smiled wider than he had in years. His eyes lit up, and he roared mightily with happiness.

The next few weeks were exciting as the tiger helped the lion prepare for Dwight’s 140th birthday celebrations. That wasn’t hard because the lion loves cake! While the lion slept in the crest at night, he had become very active around school during the day getting ready for children to return to class.

On the first day of school in September, all the students came running back to Dwight to meet their friends and say hello to their teachers. As they passed through the big iron doors, they heard a loud, mighty roar coming from the Dwight crest above.

“Look at the Dwight lion!” one little girl exclaimed. “He’s so happy and pleased to see us, and he looks so beautiful with his long glossy mane!” All the other children turned their faces up and their eyes widened with awe to see the Dwight lion smiling and welcoming them back to school with delight.
