Sexual assault occurs in residence hall by Samantha Hogan Eagle Staff Writer
Update Feb. 27 at 1:14 p.m. AU Public Safety released new information about the sex crime that occurred in a main campus residence hall at 4 a.m. on Feb. 23. The crime was originally classified as a sex offense in a Feb. 24 Crime Alert. The crime was updated to a forcible sex offense in the AU Daily Crime Log on Feb. 25.
“The investigation into this incident is ongoing,” Philip Morse, senior director of Public Safety and Emergency Management at AU, said in a Feb. 25 email. Public Safety would not release any information on: • which residence hall that the crime took place inside • how the suspect was able to enter the residence hall and room • the genders of either the survivor or suspect

Student Activity fee may be redistributed, raised

The Student Activities fee may be raised $15 and then redistributed to give more money to campus clubs and media organizations. The Student Activities Leadership Commission, a group of representatives from Student Government, AU Club Council and the Student Media Board, will present a bill to the Undergraduate Senate recommending these changes on March 2.
“We came at this from the angle of the need for redistribution, because clubs and student media didn’t have budgets that would adequately fund their organizations,” SG President Pat Kelly said. “But also we needed to look at the fee and how that fee was not helping to make the AU experience the best one possible.” The current fee is $73.50 per
undergraduate student, according to the AU website. The fee has not been raised in about 10 years, according to SALC Chair Mike Wang, a junior in the School of Public Affairs who has no affiliations with any of three groups.

Kogod starts lecture series at Union Market by Amber Cohen| Eagle Staff Writer The Kogod School of Business began a new partnership with Union Market called “Market Talks” to encourage a public discussion on a variety of business topics. On the first Tuesday of every month, Kogod faculty and community members will focus on issues that impact professional and personal lives in the
business sector, including failure in the workplace and handling professional relationships, according to Union Market’s website. “Union Market is a cool place to hang out, shop for some great food and other items and our presentations make it a great place to learn about interesting topics,” Bob Sicina, an Execu-
tive in Residence in Kogod’s Department of International Business and Feb. 4 speaker, said in an email.

The Eagle’s Anagha Srikanth interviewed up-and-coming musician and Reston, Va. local JDVBBS about the January release of his album “subURBAN,” his range of musical talents and his dreams for his career. Eagle: On Feb. 4, you released a video cover of Sara Bareilles’ song ‘Manhattan.’ Why did you choose that song and how did you insert your own artistry into it? JDVBBS: I’d been mulling over what song of hers I would cover, because I’m trying to limit my covers to one cover per artist. But when you have an artist as brilliant as Sara Bareilles is, that’s hard. I wanted to cover her because she’s an artist that I think is phenomenal and should get more praise than she does. Her lyrics are about leaving a relationship, and although that’s not the same in my case the idea of leaving Manhattan was something I identified with. I ended up leaving Manhattan not of my own choosing, and wanted to write lyrics that reflected that.

Staff Editorial: Students need to care about Student Activity Fee changes

After 12 years of status quo, changes to the Student Activities fee appear to be on the horizon. In order for that transition to proceed smoothly, it will take a unanimous effort by AU student clubs, media, government and the student body at large. The Student Activities Leadership Commission (SALC) recently voted to divert 15 percent of the entire fee to pay for executive positions in Student Government, Club Council and Student Media. Previously, each group paid their top executives from their allocated amounts, leaving many key positions underpaid in Club Council and Student Media where funds were already
scarce.
This means students who make a serious commitment to one of these groups will receive adequate funding. The Eagle applauds this initiative as a signal of progress toward equitable distribution, but two vital pieces of the fund remain undecided and it’s up to AU students to act.

The Olympics provide a rare opportunity for nations from around the world to gather and interact. During the few weeks of competition athletes compete for the honor of being called Olympians and bringing medals home. Athletes also share their cultures and skills with each other. As is true any time multiple nations come together, the competition often extends past the arena. We all compare our values and ideals to the other countries involved, turning our similarities into strong bonds and our differences into insurmountable disconnects.
The 2014 Winter Olympics are being held in the Russian city of Sochi. There has been a mixture of controversy surrounding these games due to corruption in the government, which has caused the money for the Olympic games to be misallocated. This has happened plenty of times throughout Olympic history, but it has gotten more attention with Russia. This is because people are infuriated over new laws opposing homosexuality. Homosexuality was illegal in Russia before 1991, and Boris Yeltsen decriminalized homosexual relationships in 1993.
