SATURDAY NIGHT MAIN EVENT!

County launches Black Maternal Child Health initiative

Together with representatives from the Westchester County Health Department, the Lower Hudson Valley Perinatal Network, St. John’s Riverside Hospital, Birth from The Earth, Sister to Sister, International and other advocates and providers, County Executive George Latimer announced the Black Maternal Child Health Initiative. The nearly $1M Program, which will be funded though the Health Department, was developed with the goal of improving Black maternal and child health outcomes, reducing racial healthcare inequities, and creating lasting partnerships between key community partners who are focused on ensuring successful birthing practices for all in Westchester County. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women.

Westchester DA urges victims in New Ro sex abuse case to come forward

Westchester County District

Attorney Miriam E. Rocah is urging any possible victims of a New Rochelle man charged with multiple felony sex offenses involving children to contact the DA’s Office or police. Law enforcement has seized multiple devices, which are being analyzed to identify other possible victims or witnesses.

DA Rocah said: “Sexual exploitation of minors is a crime that preys upon their vulnerabilities. We ask anyone who may have been victimized or may have information about other victims to contact us. We recognize the great difficulty for survivors to come forward, but stand ready to provide support for victims as our investigation continues.”

The defendant, Jason Ricketts, 22, was arrested by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office and arraigned in New Rochelle City Court on February 2, 2023. He was charged with Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the First Degree, Use of a Child in a Sexual Performance, Promoting an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, and Possessing an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, all felonies. The defendant is currently being held on bail, which was set at $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond and $1 million partially-secured bond.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office’s Cyber Crimes Bureau, Child Abuse Bureau, High Technology

Crimes Squad and Criminal Investigators with the Special Prosecutions Division conducted the investigation after receiving a referral from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). The New Rochelle Police Department assisted with the investigation.

Anyone who may have been victimized or may have information about other possible victims of the defendant can contact the DA’s Office Special Prosecutions Division at (914) 995-3000. Language assistance is available. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Bureau Chiefs Laura Forbes and Janelle Armentano, and Senior Assistant District Attorney Cooper Gorrie.

Latimer said: “The Black Maternal Child Health Initiative is a threepronged approach to address something we all know is a problem. It is on us to deepen the conversation about Black maternal health in Westchester County. Through this Program, we will introduce new policies, strengthen our research and analysis, and execute long-term care solutions to ensure health equity across our County.”

Westchester County Commissioner of Health Sherlita Amler, MD, said: “Focusing on health equity and improving health outcomes for all mothers is a very important goal for the Health Department, but especially for Black mothers and babies who are disproportionately affected by economic and racial inequities. We are thrilled to launch this partnership to work together to reduce disparities and to educate, inform and increase healthcare access for County residents as they strive to achieve improved health for themselves and their families.”

Sister to Sister, International Founder Cheryl Brannan said: “We appreciate our partnership with County Executive Latimer and Commissioner Amler at the WCDOH. Funding our community partners will assist in pushing our collective training, education, policy and systems change

agenda forward. Systemic change requires that government collaborates with stakeholders that are close to the problem and allocate the necessary resources.”

Lower Hudson Valley Perinatal Network Executive Director Dr. Angela Campbell said: “Children’s Health & Research Foundation (CHRF)/Lower Hudson Valley Perinatal Network (LHVPN) is so grateful and excited to be a part of this birth equity impact program that will expand our prenatal/ postpartum home visiting model by creating a Trio-Service-Delivery program. This supportive wellness framework creates Perinatal Stress Free Zones that will provide eligible pregnant people with a birth equity team. This cross-sector partnership matches clients with a Community Health Worker, Lactation Specialist, and a Doula (prenatal/postpartum). LHVPN’s transformational education and support services program aims to address the social determinants of health and equity using a respectful care framework.”

St. John’s Riverside Hospital President & CEO Ron Corti said: “Good health is a great equalizer. But the health of our communities has been proven to be out of balance. Longstanding health inequities that disproportionately impact our communities of color have been magnified by recent community-wide health emergencies. St. John’s number one priority is providing quality patient care, and this generous grant will help us in our goals of improving black maternal and child health outcomes and reducing racial healthcare inequities. We appreciate our partners in securing this grant and thank the County of Westchester for its support.”

Birth from The Earth, Inc. President & Founder Nubia Earth Martin said: “On behalf of Birth from The Earth Inc., we are extremely honored and excited to be an integral part of the positive developments that are taking place to center the needs of birthing families, and expand access to equitable and culturally respectful maternal care.”

Latimer to unveil ‘Hope Quilt’ installation

Westchester County Government’s Michaelian Office Building was selected to display one of the seven Hope Quilts created by the Westchester Children’s Association (WCA). The Hope Quilt Project is part of a year-long effort by the WCA to increase awareness of the home visiting services they offer to families with children ages 0-5 that help to reduce child abuse and neglect, increase school readiness, and improve general maternal and child health.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “This Hope Quilt is a tapestry of potential and community. Decorated with drawings of rainbows, families and flowers it is a symbol of all that connects us and the importance of working together to support our youngest and most vulnerable. I commend the Westchester Children’s Association’s tireless efforts to increase equitable access to early childhood support. We will proudly display this quilt and reflect on what it symbolizes daily.”

To learn more about the Hope Quilt Project and the WCA’s mission to keep children in Westchester safe, healthy and prepared for life’s

challenges regardless of race or zip code, go to WCA4kids.org. Those who contributed to the design, support and production of the WCA’s Hope Quilt Project include School 30 in Yonkers, the Westchester Reform Temple Early Childhood Center in Scarsdale, The Lakeland School District’s Lincoln Titus Elementary School, The Village Square Quilters, and supporters of the WCA.

“Early childhood home visiting programs provide essential services to families to foster the healthy development of babies,” said WCA Executive Director Allison Lake. “Only four percent of new parents and their infants who need the support of trained professionals can currently participate in these programs. The Hope Quilt Project was created to raise awareness and support for WCA’s advocacy work.”

In addition to viewing the Hope Quilt installed in the lobby of Westchester County’s Michaelian Office Building at 148 Martine Ave. in White Plains, there are quilts currently on public display at Westchester Children’s Museum and the Childcare Council of Westchester.

Stepinac High School announces Bloomberg Certification

When Stepinac High School celebrated in December 2021 the launch of the new Finance Center, one of its latest advanced Real-World learning technologies, it did so with the expectation that students would take advantage of the Center’s Bloomberg terminals to pursue their interests in finance and economics. Not surprisingly, it did not take very long for the 1,500-square-foot, stateof- the- art, Wall Street-like space featuring LED ticker displays in real time, to become a unique learning hub for students to gain professional literacy in finance at the college level.

And one very impressive measure of the Finance Center’s success, announced today, is that since it opened 14 months ago, about 100 students have elected to pursue Bloomberg Certification through the Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) program. The self-paced, e-learning course provides an introduction to the context of financial markets and practices using the Bloomberg terminal.

Once students complete BMC, they earn the Bloomberg Certification. Frank Portanova (Class of ’93), Vice Principal of Curriculum and Academic Studies, said: “So far, more than one-third of the students have successfully achieved certification and the remainder is expected to do so by the end of the current school year.”

He added: “This is a game changer for our students as Stepinac ranks among the very

few high schools in the nation equipped with this sophisticated, college-level learning tool.

Rackeal Bellamy, Chair of the Business Academic Department, noted: “The certification means that the students have demonstrated that they have the ability to use Bloomberg terminals to download financial information and analyze companies. This achievement will help them showcase their career interest in finance and economics when they apply for college as well as when the apply for entry-level financial service positions. The Bloomberg Certification means you have developed essential career-ready skills.”

To earn the Bloomberg Certification, students are required to complete a 16-hour self-paced learning course comprising eight certification sections. They are: Economic Indicators, Currencies, Fixed Income, Equities, Terminal Basics, Terminal Basics, Portfolio Management, Stock Options and Commodities.

The curriculum is woven together from Bloomberg data, news, analytics and enhanced with video from Bloomberg Television.

One of the appeals of the program is that no prior knowledge of the financial markets is needed in order to proceed with the curriculum and hone the research skills in each section.

Below is a list of the local Stepinac students who have pursued Bloomberg

Free tax prep for working families program

The Westchester-Putnam Workforce Development Board (WPWDB) will kick-off its “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance” (VITA) Program on Friday, Feb. 3, at multiple locations throughout Westchester. Residents must make an appointment by calling 211 or 1-800-899-1479 to schedule an appointment at one of six locations listed below.

The VITA program, which runs Feb. 1 to April 18, helps low- and moderate-income individuals and families eligible for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) file their taxes for free, including people with disabilities, senior citizens, and those for whom English is a second language. To make sure the program delivers maximum benefits, VITA relies on dedicated volunteers to act as greeters, and assist with translation and call-center operations. Tax preparation is done by IRS-certified volunteers with FREE electronic filing.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer stated, “What started as a small program in 1969 to help the IRS increase taxpayer education has evolved into a critical resource for low- and moderate-income taxpayers. Today, the VITA program helps ensure accurate tax returns and equitable access to the tax code and its many benefits. VITA is designed to help working families and individuals, but also serves to boost the local economy as it’s estimated that about 80% of refunds are spent locally, generating sales, wages and jobs.”

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said: “We are proud to provide our hard-working residents access to free tax prep services they can trust and rely on right in their local community. We thank all the IRS certified volunteers for their time and talent.”

The program is delivered through a collaboration of partners who work diligently to coordinate the dayto-day appointments and operations—United Way 2-1-1, Volunteer NY, WestCOP, AARP, the IRS, Westchester County Government, Westchester Community College, Westchester Education Opportunity Center, Mercy College Westchester and Bronx Campus, Ossining High School, and the Westchester-Putnam Career Center Network.

Call 211 or 1-800-899-1479 to make an appointment for one of the six locations listed.

Clay Art Center to open ‘Homecoming’ exhibit

An Invitational Exhibition Celebrating 25 Years of Clay Art Center’s Artist in Residence Program

Opening Reception:

March 4, 6:30 – 8:30pm

In the Gallery: March 3 – April 10

Online March 7 – April 10

The Homecoming Exhibition celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the nationally recognized Artist in Residence program at Clay Art Center. The artists in this exhibition represent the continuum of the program through their ongoing individual development and journeys as ceramicists. This exhibition presents current work from past Clay Art Center resident artists drawn from across the United States with an opportunity to survey them collectively.

Since its inception in 1998, by Director Emeritus Reena Kashyap, over 50 young emerging artists have called Clay Art Center “home”. Clay Art Center has provided valuable time and space for artists to refine their voice as they developed their work. In turn the residents each made significant contributions to Clay Art Center as both artists and educators. While at the center, each resident left their mark on Clay Art Center, and vice versa. Many of our past residents have gone on to careers in the national ceramics field as artists and educators, and many continue their relationship with Clay Art Center through exhibition, shop and educational opportuni-

ties.

As part of the preparation for this exhibition, Director Emeritus Reena Kashyap shared these words with the invited artists:

“The Clay Art Center’s residency program has been enormously impactful in every way you look at it. It’s like a gift that keeps giving. Each year a new resident arrives filled with talent, drive and enthusiasm to avail of the gift of time and space to create, work and teach at the center and this cycle repeats year after year to a welcome burst of joy every September as new residents arrive and get settled in. It was one of the best decisions I made - to invest in you as you started your journey and career in the clay world. I am so excited and counting days to welcome you back and to celebrate each and every one of you at the

“Homecoming” exhibition in March 2023.”

Participating artists: Able Broyles, Andrew Coombs, Anny Chen, Austin Coudriet, Caitlin Brown, Chris Pickett, Christine Fashion, Cory Brown, Heather Houston, James Lee Webb, Jonathan McMillan, Kelli Damron, Kelsey Duncan, Kristina Stafford, Kyla Toomey, Lindsay Scypta, Mari Ogihara, Maria Spiess, Matthew Smith, Michelle Tobia, Mike Cerv, Mike Stumbras, Natalia Arbelaez, Nikki Lau, Ron Geibel, Shanna Fliegel, Tracy Shell, Zoey B Scheler.

Why you need dental insurance in retirement.

Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, through employer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-of-pocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care. Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage.

you’re comparing plans...

 Look for coverage that helps pay for major services. Some plans may limit the number of procedures — or pay for preventive care only.

 Look for coverage with no deductibles. Some plans may require you to pay hundreds out of pocket before benefits are paid.

 Shop for coverage with no annual maximum on cash benefits. Some plans have annual maximums of $1,000.

Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1

That’s right. As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. That means if you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.

Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones.

The best way to prevent large dental bills is preventive care. The American Dental Association recommends checkups twice a year.

Previous dental work can wear out. Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2

Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need.

Consider these national average costs of treatment ... $217 for a checkup ... $189 for a filling ... $1,219 for a crown.3 Unexpected bills like this can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.

“I don’t worry”

“Now that I have your dental policy, I don’t worry about going to the dentist. I love your plan — you pay what you say!”

The Big Yawn

Two great teams, two great quarterbacks, and one team—the Eagles—that I can not stand, you’d think that I would be invested in Sunday’s game.

It’s Super Bowl time again, and as we wait for Sunday’s “Big Game” between the Chiefs and the Eagles, I have to make an admission; this year, I just don’t know if I have it in me to care.

On the surface, that doesn’t make much sense. By all accounts, this should be be one of the more compelling games in recent memory, and that all stems from the quarterback situation; on one had, you’ve got Patrick Mahomes who, with the retirement of Tom Brady, is next in line to emerge as the generational quarterback who will be the face of the league for the next 10 years—if he isn’t already. On the other hand you’ve got Jalen Hurts, an undersized, unconventional quarterback with—and it pains me to say as a Giant fan—the sort of charisma and guts that turn a guy into a star in this league.

But I’m not; and maybe it’s just because I’m spent.

In years past, more than I’d care to count, I was a passive watcher of the NFL. Mostly, this is because the Giants were bottom-feeders, incapable of arousing any sort of passion in my fandom as they’d scuffle to another six win season. But this year, against all odds—and despite the obvious deficiencies of the roster—the Giants mattered, making the playoffs and even knocking off the Vikings in the first round.

The swings of the season, the ups-and-inevitable-downs, were a wild ride, especially for a fanbase that hadn’t had a whole lot to cheer about in a decade. But it also left me with a football-shaped hole when the Eagles eventually ended the Giants season three weeks ago in the NFC Divisional

Round game. With the Giants eliminated, I couldn’t muster more than a passing “meh” at the Conference Championship games, no matter how compelling the Bengals-Chiefs tilt was. I was simply a husk of a fan with nothing more to pour into the game.

Will things change before Sun-

day? It’s unlikely.

Sure I’ll put turn the game on; it’s an event after all. But I think the likeliest outcome for me is plopping down on the couch, eating too many wings, and halfheartedly paying attention—unless of course my box numbers are in the mix.

All things being equal, I’d rather

get to be early and wake up refreshed on Monday. Thanks, Giants; you did this to me.

I’m only hoping you can do it again next year.

Super Bowl LVII is this weekend, but Sports Editor Mike Smith just can’t get himself to care about the outcome.

Pro Wrestlers hit mat at Eastchester High School

There’s no room for bodyslams in youth sports— unless, of course, you enlist a troupe of professional wrestlers to help out with a Little League fundraiser.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the Eastchester Little League partnered with East Coast Professional Wrestling (ECPW) to hold a pro wrestling event at Eastchester High School to support an upcoming renovation project for the town’s fields.

The event featured some notable stars, including Tommy Dreamer and Salvatore Sincere—both of whom spent time in the World Wrestling Federations—and was not short on spectacle, action or excitement.

Eastchester Little League President Mike Vecchione said he had caught wind of the ECPW—a New Jersey-based outfit run by Gino Caruso that operates mainly in the tri-state area—and saw an opportunity to involve them in a family-based fundraiser.

“I had seen one of their shows and I thought it would be a great idea, so we started selling tickets right away,” said Vecchione. “It seemed like a no-brainer.”

He was proved right, as young Eastchester wrestling fans were enthralled by the show, cheering on the crowd-favorites and voicing their displeasure with the more-villainous grapplers in the gymnasium.

“The kids were definitely into it,” said Vecchione. “This

is a lot of fun for them.”

Vecchione estimates that the eight-bout event raised somewhere north of $6,000 for the Eastchester Little League. That money will be used to fund construction projects at Eastchester schools, including at Waverly and Anne Hutch, which are

scheduled to begin shortly.

The ELL President noted that there was a lot that had to come together to make the night a success, including the cooperation of the Eastchester Union Free School District. He noted that the district has been a terrific partner in projects aimed at

helping local youths.

“Once the tickets went out, I was watching the numbers and saw them rising and rising; I was floored,” said Vecchione. “This league gets a ton of support; from town hall, the recreation department, the Board of Education, it’s great to have all this

support behind us.

“In the last year and a half, nearly everything we’ve tried to do has had great support,” he added. “And that says a lot about the people in this community.”
