NYC man sentenced to 7 years in prison for illegal gun possession in Harrison
Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced today that a New York City man was sentenced on Thursday to seven years in state prison for illegal gun possession.
Rocah said, “Today’s sentence is another example of my unwavering commitment to removing dangerous weapons and those who illegally possess them from our streets.”
The defendant, Jose Valle, 35,
of New York City, pleaded guilty on Oct. 12, 2023, to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a felony. In addition to his sentence, the defendant will receive five years of post-release supervision. The defendant, who has prior felony convictions, is prohibited from legally possessing firearms.
On Dec. 28, 2022, at approximately 4:48 p.m., the Westchester County Department of Public
Safety conducted a routine traffic stop on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Harrison. The defendant attempted to flee before police arrested him and recovered from the defendant’s pant leg a 9mm pistol loaded with seven bullets.
The case was before Judge George Fufidio in Westchester County Court and prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Adrian Murphy of the Trials and Investigations Division.
New Rochelle’s parents, educators, citizens and businesspeople are gearing up for the city’s first systemic alternative to conventional public-school teaching beginning September 2025. New Rochelle kids have never enjoyed options in existing public schools. Through public-school choice, MSLT Academy Public Charter school will provide them to parents and children.
Founder and Iona University Adjunct Professor Ivan Green and his team are proposing to the Agency for Charter approval, the implementation of the Mathematics, Science, Language and Technology (MSLT) Academy Public Charter School, to be located at an existing facility within New Rochelle; New York State’s seventh largest city, with a population of some 87,000. The institution will be administered through the long-established City School District of New Rochelle (CSDNR), alongside 13 neighborhood schools currently located throughout the municipality.
According to the professor, global challenges, and the effects of Covid require new “adaptations” in New Rochelle’s teaching strategies and methods. “Graduates of our K-12 primary and secondary schools face sharp
competition for college placement and career-employment from the nation’s finest talent and that of Asia, Africa, Europe and the rest of the world,” says Green. “After past success, our city school system is currently facing widespread student desertions and departures.” Decline in performance on competitive test results, disciplinary challenges, and physical plant, and systems failure disasters continue to plague CSDNR. Green’s new educational model, with a comprehensive and doctrinal emphasis on math, technology, science, and the arts, will actualize individual student dreams and inspire public school success as well. In addition, MSLT will support all students, including those with special needs, by exposure to hands-on introductory courses in Art, Mechanics, Catering, Architecture and Technical drawing at the middle school level.
At inception, MSLT will provide a more concentrated curriculum in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) subjects than available presently, along with appropriate instruction in languages, the arts and physical fitness. District families will be able to apply to a lottery

for eligibility for the school’s first classes. The average class size is proposed to contain 25 students — totaling approximately 300 to 400 seats.
More than specialized content, MSLT will deliver on what is “promised” in its STEM to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) “charter.” A 1998 New York State law and subsequent legislation established public charter schools and governs their operation. What uniquely distinguishes MSLT from ordinary neighborhood public schools is its obligation to establish and publish tangible pupil objectives and goals in the concentration it has chosen for itself: technology, social science, language; even health, law enforcement & law. MSLT Academy charter school will be held to similar and even more strict standards governing the New Rochelle school district, set forth by the New York State Department of Education.
Five years after a public charter school is founded, it must undergo a comprehensive New York State Department of Education review of statistically measurable results and achievements as compared to the objectives and goals recorded in the original “charter” application. This specific review, a measurement of the individual operation’s comportment with not just generalized statewide standards but with the reasons for its original
founding also, is what sets “charters” apart. They deliver quality teaching, student excellence and devotion to American ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Asked what motivated him to bring this new public teaching model to New Rochelle, Professor Green was emphatic: “Everybody in education today exalts student achievement, instructional excellence and fostering equity among minority students with access to resources at all levels of their educational journey. Well, I do too. Two years ago, I decided to do something about it; something new to New Rochelle and much of Westchester County: primary and secondary instruction regularly and concretely monitored and compared to the founders’ established objectives of the smallest measurable unit: school, grade, classroom, or individual student.”
“I think we have found it; A public charter school operating within an existing district; offering to parents and kids more specialized teaching, focused on the individual student’s needs. It may be viewed as educationally competitive - but it is cooperative-competition, moderated and modulated by a devoted school team; competition with a heart,” he said. A charter school also has the benefit of directing our state educational expenditures to where the consumers - client-customer parents, and students - want it. Stated Professor Green, “It is the best example of public-school choice available in New York. The money follows the student.”

Another “Super” Sunday
Call me a stick in the mud, but I just don’t get as excited about the Super Bowl as I used to. On Sunday evening, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will square off in Super Bowl LVIII, the biggest sporting— and television—event of the year, and despite the fact that I think it’s bound to be a good one, I just can’t bring myself to care.
Because in the end, Super Bowl Sunday has become less about crowning an NFL Champion and become more about serving as a weird funhouse mirror of the society in which we live.
I get it, the “spectacle” has always been a part of the Super Bowl, at least since I’ve been alive.
But a little spectacle goes a long way, at least for me. I don’t need halftime stars parachuting onto the 50-yard-line from low-orbit satellites, I don’t need 12 musical acts fighting for space on the stage to capture the nostalgia crowd by singing 20 seconds of a hit from 1997. And I don’t need a six hour telecast to tell the story of a game that might feature 28 minutes of actual “in-game” action.
I didn’t even used to have a problem with the heavy commercialization surrounding the game. But now I’m wary of the way corporations are using the Super Bowl ads to inundate with new marketing campaigns well before kickoff. Companies used to pour their creative and financial backing into creating Super Bowl ads that would spark discussion, for better or worse. The day after the game, people would break down which
ones worked, which didn’t, which celebs made surprise turns as Doritos pitch men.
But now, these advertisements pop up online weeks ahead of their air date, sparking—what I assume is bot-driven—discussion on social media pages, rendering the actual spots ineffective and incapable of eliciting an actual reaction from viewers.
It’s yet another reminder of how bloated and gross this entire affair has become. Corporations are so intent on manufacturing a big moment that these overly-engineered and think-tank researched ad buys end up falling flat.
As for the game itself? Who knows? Could be a classic, could be a dud. That’s the kind of risk you take with Super Bowls. But the excessive pomp and circumstance only serves to highlight the failings of a bad game while taking
away from games that would live on in the annals of sporting history without the excess bells and whistles. And yet, people will still tune in— at least while the games are still on network television—and no lessons will be learned.
And for all my griping, I’ll be just another one of the sheep blindly counting down ‘till kickoff. After all, it’s not like there’s anything better on the tube.
Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_SportsDiCarlo notches 300th career win
By MIKE SMITH Sports EditorAnyone who has gotten to know Fred DiCarlo over the years recognizes that the last thing he wants is to be the center of attention. But on Saturday night, all eyes were on DiCarlo, as his Eagles topped Pleasantville 45-30 at home to help the longtime coach reach an impressive milestone, notching his 300th career victory in the process.
After the final whistle sounded, DiCarlo’s historic win was celebrated by players, fans and family, as he was presented with a ceremonial basketball to commemorate his achievement. DiCarlo has been coaching in the school district for over 30 years, currently serving as both the head varsity basketball and
football coach—and said he has welcomed the opportunity to give back to the high school from which he graduated in 1985.
He began his coaching journey with the district 34 years ago and took over as the head basketball and football coach in the late 1990s. In 2018, he also secured his 100th career football field.
“I’m so appreciative that the community and the school district have allowed me to coach for this long,” said DiCarlo. “I was really happy to get this win here at home, I’m happy for my seniors, who have been with me for the last couple of years, so it really was a great day.”
One of those seniors, Aidan Schultz, was effusive in his praise of DiCarlo, noting that he was honored to be a
part of the group that secured the milestone win for the coach. Schultz plays both basketball and football for DiCarlo and said the coach has had an immeasurable impact on the lives of he and his teammates.
“After we beat Pelham on Thursday, coach mentioned that he was at 299 and you could tell all the guys wanted to get it for him,” said Schultz. “I’ve known him since I was five years old, and honestly, he’s been the most influential person I’ve met in my middle and high school career; between sports and life in general, he’s trying to make us better players and better people.”
DiCarlo also noted that getting the win against Pleasantville was especially meaningful, given his connec-
tion to both towns. I live in Pleasantville, so to get it here with the players I’ve coached in CYO and
Dad’s Club baseball on the court, that’s really amazing,” he said. “It’s like the gods were looking down and made
this one extra special.”

Wrestlers hit the mat at County Center
By MIKE SMITH Sports EditorThe Section 1 Wrestling Championships found a new home this past weekend, as the historic Westchester County Center played host to the most prestigious local tournament of the year. But even if no champions emerged from the ranks of The Review’s coverage area, a number of familiar grapplers fared quite well at the two-day event.
Rye’s C.J Luth finished second at 160-pounds, securing the distinction of being the top finisher for Review teams on Sunday. Luth scrapped his way to the championship bout where he was pinned by Nyack’s Sam Szerlip. Szerlip—who placed third at States last year—came into the 2023-2024 season with high expectations and has met them thus far, being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Heavyweight Wrestler on the day.
There were two local All-Section wrestlers at 101 pounds, as New Rochelle’s
Fotis Koufalis placed third and Harrison’s Sienna Cozzali finished sixth. Cozzali, a sophomore, had a remarkable run this year, winning at the prestigious Eastern States event and is looking ahead to bigger things next year.
“I knew I wanted to get far, so I kept on practicing and practicing,” said Cozzali. “Because hard work will usually get you there.”
The 108 pound bracket saw a number of familiar faces place in the top six, as Mamaroneck’s Tatsu Homma and Joe Sullivan placed third and fifth, respectively while Josue Aguilar took sixth.
Huguenot 116-pounder Mateo Crino placed fourth to round out the finishers among local lightweight wrestlers.
Luth’s teammate Thomas Anderson secured a fourthplace finish in the 215-pound bracket, while Eastchester’s Joe Roche closed out his varsity career with a win, topping Tappan Zee’s Cameron Keeperman to take fifth in the division.
For senior wrestlers, the trip to the County Center was
a fitting end to their time as high school wrestlers, but for younger wrestlers, like Cozzali, getting the chance to
take the mat at Westchester’s most famous arena will likely serve as extra motivation for next year’s campaign.
“This gives me a lot of drive for next year,” said Cozzali. “I’m hoping to get first in this tournament and go even
farther than I did today.”
