Eastchester REVIEW THE ArtsWestchester hosts Women’s History Month

SEASON HEATS UP!

Student group will open for world-renowned quartet

The Westchester Chamber Music Society (WCMS) is continuing its educational Youth Initiative to partner with chamber music programs at schools and colleges across Westchester County in which top student chamber music groups “open” for world-renowned professional ensembles and receive feedback from members of the ensemble in the form of a mini-masterclass. The students also participate in the post-concert Q&A session with the professional musicians. The very successful kick-off event in March 2023 featured students from the Music Conservatory of Westchester and the Amerigo Trio with the violinist and former concertmaster of the

New York Philharmonic Glenn Dicterow. In April 2023, the celebrated Horszowski Piano Trio was joined by an ensemble from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music.

On April 21, 2024, WCMS will present the Momenta Quartet with the violinists Emilie-Anne Gendron and Alex Shiozaki, the violist Stephanie Griffin, and the cellist Michael Haas. The quartet is playing a program of Haydn, Brown, and Schubert. The American composer Elizabeth Brown, will attend the concert and introduce her piece, Just Visible in the Distance, to be performed by the Momenta.

The Momenta will also perform Haydn’s String Quartet in F minor, “Sun Quartets,” Op. 20, No. 5, and

Schubert’s String Quartet No. 13 in A minor (“Rosamunde”) D. 804, Op. 29.

As part of our focus on intergenerational and educational programming, the WCMS Youth Initiative will provide an opportunity for the SEAL String Quartet from White Plains High School to “open” for the Momenta. Mentored by Zachary May, student musicians Lucas Rhode, violin; Emiliano Juarez, violin; Aria Mukhopadhyay, viola; and Saskia Aikman, cello, will play the first movement from Haydn’s String Quartet in D minor, Op. 76, No. 2 (“Quinten”).

Attendees at the concert will

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Senator Shelley B. Mayer, and ArtsWestchester hosted a Celebration of Women’s Art and Cultural Expressions on March 23, in honor of Women’s History Month. Community members from throughout Westchester came to watch performances by four remarkable female artists and to listen to a panel discussion on women’s art, inspiration, and challenges. Leader Stewart-Cousins, Senator Mayer, and ArtsWestcheser welcomed four artists: Estelle Messina Bikibili (Stella the Artiste), a Motown/Soul singer and pianist; Flor Bromley, a Latin singer/ songwriter; Rachel M. Simon, a poet; and Shanelle Watts (ShanelleTheArtist), a spoken word artist.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said, “It was wonderful to host a Celebration of Women’s Art and Cultural Expressions in honor of Women’s History Month. In celebrating Women’s History Month, we honor the resilience, creativity, and indomitable spirit of women throughout history. In Westchester and throughout New York State, we have a rich tapestry of artistic expression surrounding us, and events like these serve as reminders of the impact that art has on our lives. I extend my thanks

to our four phenomenal artists for their captivating performances, and to my co-hosts, Senator Shelley Mayer and ArtsWestchester.”

Senator Shelley Mayer said, “I was happy to host this special celebration of art and culture in honor of Women’s History Month. In Westchester, we are so fortunate to have beautiful forms of art all around us, much of it thanks to ArtsWestchester. It is important that we uplift female voices in our community and share experiences with one another through art. I thank Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and ArtsWestchester for co-hosting this event and I thank the four incredible performers for sharing their work with the community.”

Janet Langsam, Chief Executive Officer of ArtsWestchester, said, “I was honored to co-host this event to elevate women artist’s creative work with Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Senator Shelley Mayer. It is important to ArtsWestchester to make safe spaces for artist’s voices to be shared and to be heard. Art is honest and true because artists, so often, get to the heart of the matter through their expressions. Whether through music, poetry, dance or painting, art connects us and brings people together.”

Report on Bronxville PD

Our Police Department issues an annual State of the Department report that discusses every aspect of local policing.

It is currently on the Village/P.D. website, but given its importance and comprehensive analyses, I thought the highlights deserve wider distribution.

The report says it all in the Mission Statement. “The Bronxville Police Department’s duty is to enhance life in our Village by working in partnership with the community in accordance with the constitutional rights to enforce laws, preserve the peace, reduce fear and provide a safe environment.”

Twenty-three dedicated individuals including a Chief of Police, two lieutenants, two Detectives, five Sergeants and 13 police officers serve our population of 6525 composed of 46% males, 54% females and in 2221 households averaging 2.78 occupants per unit.

Our department currently has 21 male and two female officers, 16 of which are Caucasian, four Black officers and three of Hispanic heritage. As to years of service, the largest grouping is 16 to 20 years of experience in the 41 to 45 age bracket.

Highlights of our Leadership Team

Our Police Chief, Christopher Satriale, began his career in Bronxville in 1988; was appointed Chief in 2007 and has worn every shield in the department including Police Officer, Detective Sergeant, Detective, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. He is a member of the FBI Law-Enforcement Executive Development Association, the International Chiefs of Police, the New York State Chiefs of Police, the Bronxville School Health and Safety Committee, the Westchester County Chiefs Association and the New York State Officers Association.

Lieutenant William Carroll is a Marine Corps veteran who began his career with us in 2007 after serving in the New York City Police Department 2003-2007. He was promoted to his current position of Lieutenant in 2023. He is a Youth Officer, a hostage negotiator and a member of the Bicycle Unit.

Lieutenant Nicolas DeYoung began his career in 2004 with the NYPD and joined the Bronxville department in 2007 and was also promoted to Lieutenant in 2023. Lieutenant DeYoung oversees all department training, is a member of the Emergency Response Unit, Bicycle Unit, a Youth Officer, a Community Resource Officer, and Field Training Officer.

Department Divisions

Like other Westchester departments, we have a Patrol Division, Detective Division, Emergency Response Unit, Bicycle Patrol unit and what’s terribly important to our department, a Youth Division, as our police officers are keenly aware of the issues and dilemmas facing today’s youth and we have specially trained officers that provide invaluable assistance and direction to the young people and their families.

As it is essential that the community have confidence in the procedures of their police department and its integrity, any allegations of misconduct against members of the department are thoroughly and

expeditiously investigated. It is the policy of our department to investigate any complaint of alleged officer misconduct, determine the validity and promptly and impartially take appropriate action when necessary. In 2023, there were four civilian complaints, resulting in no findings of misconduct.

Despite being such a small department, our police officers are some of the most highly trained and the following are just a few areas of expertise and recertification and enhancements to their highly professional careers.

Training

Firing Range Qualification

Requalification sessions are conducted in March, June, July, and September as officers complete training qualification in the department-issued Glock duty weapon and department patrol rifles.

Every officer was recertified in CPR, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Naloxone proficiency, and Mobile Crisis Response Team training – community based intervention to individuals in crisis including screening for suicide, or need for hospitalization and de-escalation and conflict resolution in coordination with medical and behavioral health services.

Additional Specialized Training

The Emergency Response Unit receives tactical training including covert searches, team movement, high-risk warrant service, active shooter response, structure clearing strategies, less lethal weapon use and certification, advanced firearms training, close-quarter tactics and active shooter responses.

In addition…

• EMT school

• Use of Force refresher course

• De-Escalation training

• Officer Wellness

• Field Sobriety Test Training

enjoy superb acoustics and the intimate experience of sitting close to the musicians, in a space similar in size to the drawing rooms in which Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven originally performed. WCMS will also be live-streaming the concert to people’s homes with a recording remaining available for 48 hours after the performance for listeners who cannot attend in person.

Following the concert, there will be a Q&A with the professional and student musicians.

For 73 years, the Westchester Chamber Music Society has brought to Westchester first-rate artists, such as the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma; the Amerigo Trio with the violinist Glenn Dicterow; the Emerson, Brentano,

and Kalichstein ensembles; and award-winning young talent, including the Dover and Ulysses String Quartets. Our mission is to provide live, world-class chamber-music concerts, support chamber-music performers, and help to sustain the arts community.

Each year in Rye, New York, world-class ensembles perform five concerts in an intimate setting with exquisite acoustics. Concerts are in-person and livestreamed simultaneously to remote listeners with a recording available for 48 hours after the actual performance.

Livestreaming WCMS concerts at very reasonable prices allows us to reach and serve a broader range of community members throughout Westchester and beyond, including older adults and individuals with disabilities who may not attend in person.

Slowly heating up

The first few weeks of the spring season are always kind of a weird time. Between wild swings in the weather, the vagaries or Section 1 scheduling and teams heading south for Spring Break, there doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming sense that spring sports are here.

But by this time next week, there won’t be any doubt.

At this moment, there have been some teams who kicked off their 2024 campaign last week while others are still waiting to get their first taste of regular season action. Flag football kicked off on March 20, meaning that over the last two

weeks, we’ve seen the season kicking off in fits and starts, with regular season games sprinkled in amongst pre-season scrimmages as teams prepare for the upcoming campaign.

And, as is to be expected, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag thus far; we’ve seen some amazing varsity contests played and your more traditional mid-winter scrimmages played that have featured players so bundled up, it looks like they’re gearing up for the Iditarod.

But by the time next week rolls around? We’ll be firing on all cylinders.

Maybe the weather won’t be any better—we’ll have some rain next week but temperatures will reliably be near 60 degrees—but that won’t matter once these games count for real. You’ll see an unmistakeable

urgency on the field next week as everyone will be working towards kicking off the season on a positive note.

For those teams who have gotten their first few games in down south—a number of local baseball and softball teams have traveled down to Florida and Tennessee this week—the first few games will be a sobering reminder of playing early-spring sports in the Northeast, but it won’t really matter; we’ll be in full swing and the weather won’t seem like a huge obstacle.

While the cold—and the rain, and the wind—of your early-April games might be tough for fans and journalists to take, for athletes, it’s just part of the grind.

So I, for one, will cheer once everyone’s season officially kicks off

next week. If the weather won’t warm up immediately, the competition will. And that’s enough for now.

Harrison squares off against Blind Brook on March 22. The first few weeks of the spring season can be trying, but once regular season play kicks off, at least the competition will be sizzling.

The Review Roundup

In an early-season matchup between two of the top teams in Section 1, it was the Red Hawks who came out on top, as Nyack traveled to Bronxville to best the Broncos by a 14-5 margin.

Nyack’s balanced attack proved the difference-maker, as five Red Hawks found the net on the day, led by four-goal outings from Ella Gould and Casey Cummings. Cummings, a sophomore, also notched a milestone goal in the win, reaching the 100-goal plateau for her varsity career.

Bronxville was led by Amy Villanueva and Ellie Garafolo, who both had two goals.

Eastchester battled gamely against a good Camel team last week, but

ultimately the offensive firepower of the Rams was too much to overcome, as the visitors edged the Eagles 11-5.

Julia Lisi notched three goals and two assists in the win, while Katie Ross and Jorja Tompuri both tallied two to help the Rams pad the lead.

Eastchester got two goals from Emma Kelly. Adrienne Reilly, Riley Conway, and Ciara Kelly all had a goal apiece.

sealed the win for the Broncos, giving them a signature victory to build from as the rest of the schedule wears on.

On Saturday, the Broncos righted the ship in a big way, earning a thrilling win over Long Island foe North Shore.

On Tuesday afternoon, Bronxville earned a solid win over a good private school, downing Stepinac 10-8 at home.

The Broncos were led by a terrific performance from Nicholas Martinelli, who paced all scorers with four goals. Teddy Gramins added two of his own in the winning effort. Thomas Freeman and Brian Formato each had a goal and two assists.

The Bronco’s highly-touted goalie, Luke Arrighi, made 18 stops on the day to limit the Crusader’s point total.

Eastchester traveled to New Rochelle on Tuesday afternoon, only to find themselves up against a

strong Huguenot team. The hosts got out to an early lead and coasted to victory, riding an impressive outing from Andres Morales (four goals, two assists) to a 12-5 win. Keshawn Walker
