White Plains Hospital named a World’s Best Hospitals by Newsweek
White Plains Hospital has been recognized as a “World’s Best Hospital” by Newsweek for the third consecutive year. Named a “3-Year Champion,” White Plains Hospital is one of just 15 hospitals in New York, and the only one in Westchester County, to be included on the prestigious list.
Newsweek teamed with market data research firm Statista to develop a rigorous methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the rankings. Four data sources were used for the evaluation, including an international online survey of
more than 85,000 doctors, hospital managers and healthcare professionals; patient experience surveys measuring patient satisfaction; hospital quality metrics on outcomes, hygiene measures, patient safety, and staffing; and patient-reported outcome measures. The World’s Best Hospitals 2024 list recognizes the best medical institutions across 30 countries, with 412 based in the United States. This year, White Plains Hospital was also recognized as a global leader for Infection Prevention & Patient Satisfaction.
“Being named as a World’s Best
Hospital for a third year in a row is an incredible honor and speaks volumes about the exceptional care we provide to our community,” said Dr. Michael Palumbo, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at White Plains Hospital.
White Plains Hospital has been awarded numerous accolades over the past few years, including earning a prestigious five-star hospital rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) — the highest distinction offered by the federal agency ¬– for the second consecutive year last summer.
Port Chester man gets 15 years for sexually assaulting 2 Rye teens
Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced today that a Port Chester man was sentenced to 15 years in state prison for sexually assaulting two teenagers during two separate attacks in Rye.
Rocah said: “Westchester County is safer now with this defendant off our streets. No one should fear for their safety in their neighborhood or community. We thank the brave survivors who showed incredible strength in coming forward to work with our office and ensure this defendant was brought to justice.”
The defendant, Richard Olmino, 22, pleaded guilty on April 1 to Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree and Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, both felonies. The defendant was also sentenced to 20 years of post-release supervision and is required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
On June 23, 2023, at approximately 12 a.m., the defendant asked for help from a 16-year-old female jogging in Rye Town Park, then took her phone and threw her to the ground as she tried to run away. The defendant told the victim he had a knife before
exposing himself and sexually assaulting her. A park security guard interrupted the attack, causing the defendant to flee. Police recovered the defendant’s cell phone at the scene.
DNA evidence from the incident linked the defendant to a separate incident that took place on June 3, 2023 on Parsons Street in Rye, where, at approximately 1:36 a.m., the defendant approached an 18-year-old female who was walking home from an after-prom party, asked for help, then took her cell phone and threatened her before sexually assaulting her.
The City of Rye Police Department arrested the defendant at his Port Chester home on June 25, 2023, after police, with assistance from the Westchester County Department of Public Safety and the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, used the defendant’s cell phone to identify and locate him.
The defendant, who has two open warrants in Connecticut, including one for public indecency, and a pending criminal case in Suffolk County, has remained remanded to Westchester County Jail since his arrest.

Learning to cope
Of course, it all ended the way we thought it would in New York; utter heartbreak and what-ifs.
On Saturday night, the last vestige of 1994-type hopes that area fans had for their sports teams were dashed when the Rangers’ playoff run came to an end with a Game 6 loss in Florida.
With the Knicks and Rangers both eliminated from postseason contention after a May that seemed filled with endless optimism, it’s now time to think back on these difficult losses and look ahead to a long, boring summer.
The Knicks’ shortcomings, of course, are much easier to stomach than the Rangers’. Injuries
absolutely decimated New York down the stretch, turning a once formidable lineup into a comedy of errors as key contributors like Julius Randle, OG Anunoby, Mitchell Robinson and Bojan Bogdonovic all suffered catastrophic injuries even before the Knicks were forced to contend with Josh Hart’s abdominal strain and Jalen Brunson’s broken hand. Was it disappointing? Sure. But at some point, the realization of just how much of an uphill climb making the Eastern Conference Finals with a Jericho Sims-led team would be kind of set in, lessening the blow.
The Rangers on the other hand? That’s a tougher nut to crack.
The Rangers were outplayed in just about each of their six games against Florida, leaving fans to
scratch our heads as to just how they managed to take two off a smothering Panthers’ squad.
It was a bad matchup for our skaters, for sure, as Florida looked bigger, faster, stronger and tougher than the Blueshirts skaters. In fact it was only the inspired play of phenom Igor Shesterkin in net that gave the team any bit of life.
It’s always tough to watch a team that excelled in the regular season falter in the biggest games, but for the majority of the Florida series, the Rangers looked nothing like the team that ran through the competition all season long en route to capturing the President’s Trophy.
So now what?
The only New York-area sports fanatics with anything to keep their attention for the next few weeks will be Yankees fans, as the Bronx
Bombers are out to a terrific start this year. The Mets? The less said about them the better.
But until NFL training camp starts this summer, a fanbase that seemingly had no shortage of options has essentially had their viewing choices limited to Michael Kay broadcasts or MSG’s classic highlights until Week 1 of the NFL season.
And for me? Well, now I’m just
going to have to trick myself into thinking that the Red Sox won’t be 10 games under .500 by the AllStar Break.
We’ll get through this, sports fans. we always do.
I just wish our teams didn’t give us so much practice when it came to coping.
Section 1 hangs tough in regional finals
By MIKE SMITH Sports EditorIt was a banner day for Section 1’s sports teams on Saturday, June 1, as local state title contenders took one step closer to their ultimate goals, turning in blistering performances in the regional finals to keep their seasons alive.
Among those hopefuls were a handful of the Review teams still eager for a shot at a New York State Championship.
Perhaps nowhere was Section 1’s success greater than on the lacrosse field. Across eight Saturday regional final games—featuring both boys and girls teams—local squads went a blistering 8-0 and rode that clean sweep into eight state semifinals berths.
On the girls side, it was Rye and Bronxville leading the way, as the Garnets and Broncos earned wins over Queensbury and Voorheesville respectively.
Bronxville—who was a state runner-up last year—had little trouble with Voorheesville, taking a 10-2 halftime lead and going on to beat the Blackbirds 17-4. Cooperation was the name of the game for the Broncos,
as eight different players chipped in goals in the win. The win earned the Broncos a Friday morning semifinals showdown with Section 3 South Jefferson in Cortland, NY.
Rye might not have had as easy a time in their regional matchup, but managed to hang the first loss of the season on Section 2 Queensbury, turning it on in the second half to come away with an 11-8 win. Seven different Garnets found the net, with Mary Ebeling, Mary Sack, Mali White and Caroline Doyle pacing the team with two apiece.
Rye will play against Section 4’s Fulton High School on Friday in Cortland.
On the boys end, both Mamaroneck and Rye advanced to the state semis with wins over Shenendehowa and Queensbury
Like their counterpart on the girls’ end, Rye’s boys also defeated Queensbury, beating their opponents 16-3 behind four goals from freshman Will Niejadlik. Mamaroneck had a closer contest, topping the Plainsmen 7-5 on the strength of single-goal games by seven different players.
Unfortunately for both the Garnets and Tigers,
their runs would end on Wednesday afternoon in the state semifinals, where they fell to Long Island champions Bluepoint-Bay Port and Farmingdale, respectively.
Section 1’s baseball teams also shined in the regional finals on June 1, as Eastchester topped Section 9 Wallkill 7-2 at Cantine Field in Saugerties.
Jake Warnock picked
up the win for the Eagles tossing a complete game three-hitter, while Kieran McCloskey went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Eastchester will play in the state semifinals against
Section 2 champion Bethlehem Central on June 7 at 4 p.m. at Binghamton University.
