“Borscht Belt Artifacts: Relics of the Catskill Resort Age” was first debuted by local author, musician, and historian Alex Prizgintas last November to a strong audience.
“The history of the Borscht Belt, particularly how it was a melting pot for so many cultures when it came to cuisine, entertainment, music, and so many other aspects of American history” says Prizgintas.
“What is even more tragic is how this history has vanished so quickly, which is why I have dedicated myself to collecting relics from the old hotels, resorts, and bungalow colonies.” Since Prizgintas began collecting items from the Borscht Belt ten years ago, awareness for this crucial aspect of our local past has rapidly expanded with the opening of the Borscht Belt Museum in Ellenville, the ongoing Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project, and a number of both films as well as books that have been published.
“Seeing this history finally receiving the recognition it deserves is incredibly rewarding, and I am honored to be a part of this new chapter for the memories of the Borscht Belt.”
Prizgintas’s popular
Borscht Belt lecture will be featured by the Harrison Public Library in Harrison on Monday, July 15 at 7 p.m. An advisory board member of the new Borscht Belt Museum of Ellenville, he did not live during the age of the grand hotels and bungalow colonies but is nonetheless fascinated by what artifacts remain.
“Beyond their revolutionary architecture and nexus of cultures, I was always drawn to how the Borscht Belt intersected with many of my other historical interests—principally railroads,” says Prizgintas.
“With thousands of items from each of an estimated 926 hotels and bungalow colonies, this program covers a broad history of the Borscht Belt extending back to the earliest records of summer agricultural colonies in the late 1830s. From here, I showcase five unique items from my personal collection that all have a special place amidst the hearts and hands that shaped this region of New York.” As a staple of all these lectures, this event will feature displays of historical artifacts allowing the audience to visibly and tangibly view the region’s past.

WJCS awarded grant to support vulnerable seniors
Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) is thrilled to have been awarded a $40,000 grant from the Field Hall Foundation for Geriatric Care Management. This support is especially needed because addressing the issues faced by the elderly is becoming increasingly important as the population in Westchester County ages. It is the fastest growing age group in Westchester, with people over age 65 representing 18.4% of our county’s population in 2022.
Seniors living on limited incomes in Westchester often face financial insecurity. More than 39%—45,000 people—in Westchester live in poverty, which is higher than Rockland, Nassau, or Putnam counties.
“Seniors face great challenges as they try to age gracefully and safely. They need someone to help them navigate care options and connect them with available social, financial, and health resources,” said WJCS CEO Seth Diamond. “WJCS fills a vital need, to support lower income older adults who are often left isolated with limited mobility and transportation at an age when their emotional, physical, and financial concerns are increasing.”
“Field Hall Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable older adults,
which aligns with WJCS’ Geriatric Care Management Program, and we are very happy to support the program,” stated John R. Heart, Field Hall Foundation’s CEO.
The WJCS Geriatric Care Management program provides low-income seniors with in-home assessments for safety, personalized care planning, on-going case management, guidance on senior housing options; individual and family counseling based on identified needs of the senior and/or their caregiver(s); access to other WJCS services as identified through individual counseling and telephone inquiries; and connections to a network of service providers, including home health care, social services, and legal and financial experts. The Field Hall Foundation grant will benefit more than 200 seniors in Westchester.
WJCS Geriatric Care Managers serve as an ongoing resource to clients as well as their children and other family members, many of whom live out of town.

Town of Rye observes Juneteenth
Juneteenth officially became an American federal holiday, called “National Independence Day” by President Joseph Biden. Juneteenth, which is both a day of solemn reflection and remembrance and one of emancipation celebration, commemorates June 19, 1865: the date when the last enslaved people in the Confederacy were notified of their freedom following the Civil War. The town of Rye, which is home to one of the area’s most important Black History sites, The Rye African-American Cemetery, once again honored the memory of our forebears with its third annual event of service and spoken word at the cemetery, on Saturday, June 22.
For years, the town has worked hand-in-hand with the Friends of the African American Cemetery, The Osborn, and civic-minded volunteers to care for the grounds and maintain/restore memorials and pathways of the site. This year, the ceremony will be followed immediately by
volunteer service activities that center upon preparing for a new gravel pathway into the historic cemetery, and a gentle cleaning of stonework, paying tribute to those interred within.
Rye Town is the sole New York state municipality to receive a 2023 National Park Service (NPS) grant, based upon the community’s strong support and advocacy of preservation projects for this key site, which is intrinsically tied to the struggle of African Americans to gain equal rights.
The Historic Preservation Fund’s African American Civil Rights grant program worked alongside its partners from The Friends of the African American Cemetery and The Osborn, as well as local legislators, descendants, and students to help beautify the landmark in an ongoing preservation project. The project aims to detect, via cutting-edge technology, any unmarked grave sites so that the Town can
appropriately map the site for historical records and place headstones for those unknown, who currently have none.
Work at the site began in October 2023. Using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and a team of specialists brought on board by Heritage Consultants to take aerial photographs of the cemetery, they created 3D models of each headstone. A total of 232 potential burials were located in the cemetery. Only 120 of these are associated with burial markers. Of the remaining 112, 64 were identified as “probable unmarked burials” and the remaining 48 were identified as “possible unmarked burials”.
This important and deeply meaningful work is an ongoing project. In light of these recent discoveries, and together working side by side, we will learn more about our rich history while honoring the African Americans who built our towns.

Developer breaks ground on 200-unit luxury building in Harrison

Five acres of the site will be set aside as open space, which includes an outdoor walking trail system that will be open to the public, a dog park and a community garden, operated by the West Harrison-based nonprofit Our New Way Garden. Additionally, two landscaped courtyards will include grill and lounge areas, a heated pool and fire pits.

Floor plans are varied, with 30 studios, 75 one-bedroom units, 11 one-bedroom dens and 84 two-bedroom units. Five percent of units at the project are reserved for residents earning 80% of the area median income.

Things are buzzing at MSG
I’ve been a Knicks fan for a while, but for the life of me, I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about the NBA in June.
In the lead-up to Wednesday night’s draft, the Knicks made some big splashes, resigning OG Anunoby and unloading a heap of draft capital for Nets star Mikal Bridges. Were the moves good ones? Obviously it’s took early to tell, but what I do know is that the Knicks—after decades of futility—are finally operating in the off-season with a distinct plan to vie for one of the top spots in the Eastern Conference.
As far as Bridges goes, there aren’t too many moves that could have made me happier as a fan.
Aside from my love of the Knicks, I’ve also been a longtime supporter of Villanova basketball. To see Bridges join the rest of the “Nova Knicks”—and play alongside his college teammates Donte DiVincenzo, Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson—is a dream come true, the realization of something many fans with my rooting interests have been calling for since the former Wildcats began to leave their mark on the franchise.
As for Anunoby, the main question is health.
He’s been an incredibly productive player for the Knicks while on the floor, as his defense, rebounding and ability to hit timely shots helped to transform the Knicks from a nice story prior to the trade deadline into a legitimate powerhouse. Can he stay healthy? That remains to be seen, but the fact is, when he is out on the court, he helps hold every -
thing together.
For too long, I’ve gotten used to the “almosts” when it comes to Knick off-seasons. Historically, the Knicks would put all their eggs in one basket—a top flight free agent who would reject their overtures—and be forced to recalibrate a plan once said star signed elsewhere.
Now, the Knicks are loading up on good, solid professionals, guys who buy-in to Tom Thibodeau’s game-plan and know how to play together.
I’d almost forgotten what it’s like to root for a Knicks team that identifies its priorities and operates with an overarching plan to develop a consistent winner.
It’s not so bad, is it?
Now obviously, we don’t know if these moves—perhaps just the start of the off-season retooling— will pay off. We’ve got a while before the NBA season rolls
around and even longer before we get a sense of exactly how good this Knicks team is.
But it’s June, I’m smiling, and I’m excited.
And it’s been a long time since I could say that.

Lakeland Summer League heats up

As high school sports teams gear up for the 20242025 season, numerous programs are finding ways to get much-needed work in during the summer months.
18 such teams make up the Lakeland Summer Soccer League—now in its 17th season—providing Section 1 clubs an opportunity to square off against each other on the pitch prior to the official start of the sports year in late August.
On Sunday, June 30, several local squads were in action in the Lakeland League, as Harrison topped Walter Panas 2-0 and Rye earned a 3-0 win over Eastchester in a slate of games at Walter Panas High School.
For the Garnets, who come into the year with a mix of experience and youth on the roster, the Lakeland Summer League is an opportunity to watch youngsters and veterans alike figure out what their roles may be this fall.
Rye coach Jared Small— whose teams have long participated in the two-monthlong summer season—said
that getting his players some game experience during the summer is an integral part in preparing for the upcoming campaign.
“It’s about getting to know new players and about asking more experienced players to become leaders,” said Small. “Those are the two main goals because it’s not about winning and losing in the summer, it’s about developing your identity as individuals and as a team.”
Against Eastchester, the Garnets’ skill was undeniable, as goals from Kaden Zion, Alex van der Voort and Liam Harrington helped Rye come away with a decisive win over an Eagles’ team that tied for a share of the Section 1 title last year.
“You can tell, with the younger players, that they are coming in with really good skills and have been well coached to get them to this point,” said Small. “The biggest challenge for them is getting adjusted to the size and physicality of some of the older players.”
With the win, the Garnets improved to 2-1 on the summer—good enough for third place in League A—while the Eagles fell to 0-1-2. Harri-
son’s win put the Huskies at 1-1-1 this year and they will look to improve on that record when they take on
Ardsley (2-1) on Friday afternoon.
The Lakeland Summer League’s regular season will run until July 19 and the playoffs will conclude on Aug. 2, when both the semifinal and championship rounds will be played. Contact: sports@hometwn.com
