State flies flags at half-staff for NYPD officers killed Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff on Jan. 28 in honor of fallen NYPD officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora. Flags were lowered to half-staff at sunrise on Jan. 28, the day of officer Rivera’s funeral service, and returned to full-staff at sunset on Feb. 2, following officer Mora’s funeral service. “The losses of Officer Rivera and Officer Mora are felt widely and deeply by all New York-
ers—my thoughts are with their families and loved ones,” Hochul said. “Today we mourn as they are laid to rest, but tomorrow we must work to eradicate the epidemic gun violence has become in our communities. We must get to the root of this issue to prevent tragedies like this from happening. New Yorkers deserve elected officials that will work for them to solve this problem and that is exactly what they will get.” (Submitted)

Village Trustee and college professor Dr. Cara Kronen and education technology executive Nicole Engelbert were nominated on Tuesday, Jan. 25, by Tuckahoe’s Democratic Committee as the party’s nominees in the upcoming March village election. Kronen, deputy chair of the Teacher Education Department at Manhattan Community College, was appointed to the village board last year and is seeking a full two-year term. “I am honored to have the nomination and support of the party and my neighbors,” Kronen said. “Serving as Trustee for the last nine months has given me the opportunity to do meaningful work to help my community. Nicole and I look forward to talking with Tuckahoe residents in the next few weeks.” Nicole Engelbert, vice president of Higher Education at the tech giant Oracle, is making her first-ever bid for public office. “My husband and I chose Tuckahoe for what it could offer our family,” Engelbert said after receiving the Committee’s nod. “I am honored by the nomination and eager to hear from my fellow residents about what more they expect from Tuckahoe.” During the pandemic, besides the distribution of masks, test kits, and sanitizer, Kronen initiated
safe, family-friendly outdoor activities for children and their parents. She was also responsible for Tuckahoe’s outreach programs for seniors and schools. Village Mayor Omayra Andino, a Democrat, praised Kronen’s efforts on the board thus far, and commended Engelbert for coming forward to serve the village. Tuckahoe voters will choose two trustees for the village board in the election on March 15. The polling site in the Tuckahoe Community Center at 71 Columbus Ave., will be open from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Pandemic protocols will be in place to ensure the safety of voters and election workers. The election is administered by the Westchester County Board of Elections, BOE. To be eligible, voters must be registered by March 4 and can do so online. Due to the persistent presence of COVID-19, no-excuse absentee voting will be in effect for the Village election under a bill signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat. Voters may apply for an absentee ballot on the Board of Elections website. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked no later than March 15. Ballots may also be delivered to the poll site or the BOE’s office at 25 Quarropas St., in White Plains. (Submitted)
