Old door gets a new lease on life at Hunt & Gather

I

By Heather Bukovsky

f you’re anything like me, you adore everything old! The high quality and true craftsmanship of antique materials is something that gets me so excited! They just aren’t duplicated today in the same way. Loving old pieces means that we all end up acquiring some items that could use a little bit of love... or well...a lot. So, of course, we all have that one item -- that one thing that we found that we weren’t sure why we bought it, we just knew it had to be saved and that it could be something again, something different. Transforming something old into something new again is so much fun! Sometimes it’s just amazing to me how breathing new life into a piece once forgotten can really give it a new life. Just because something is slight-

ly less than perfect doesn’t mean it can’t be salvaged into something beautiful. A custom project I am so proud of was recently excecuted in our shop, Hunt and Gather Vintage Market. This was done for a customer by two of our vendors. It was this fantastic pantry door, which was refinished by Diane Ouellette of Boot Junkey Boutiques and Sandi Fiffy of Vintage Updos, both vendors in our shop. Here is that project. The door was a hideous mess when they got their hands on it. Once stored in a damp basement, it had some water damage and the trim molding around the glass was popping out. There was mold, holes, and cracks. The door needed to be cut down in order to fit into the space where it was to be used. The hole that once held the handle had to be covered up and smoothed out. This door might’ve

never seen the light of day again, seeing as how antique doors are normally not the size of new door frames, and too often they are unable to be used in modern homes. The customer had a vision for

what she wanted. She found a picture on Pinterest that she loved; shown here at left, and that was what she wanted to duplicate. Diane is an expert painter who can duplicate any finish, any design that a customer could possibly want. Her skills with a paintbrush are amazing. I personally got to watch her work on this piece and it took several days of mixing and matching, waxing and sanding

in order to get the perfect color. Once that paint job was perfected and complete, it was time to hand it over to Sandi for her stenciling magic! Sandi is one of the most talented sign makers in the shop. She is beyond detailed when it comes to making, well, anything! She has extreme attention to detail and can duplicate almost any de-

sign. She was able to re-create the word pantry in the exact font and design from the Pinterest picture, and hand-paint that onto the door. Together, these two extraordinary women created such a beautiful statement piece for the customer’s home. This is proof that you can definitely breathe new life into a piece that desperately needs it, and give a second chance to such a wonderful piece of history. NEW ENGLAND’S BEST SHOPS & SERVICES M&M Carriage House offers reclaimed and custom wooden goods By Eric Stanway

F

or Michele and Michael Zukatis-Ohayon, their business, M&M Carriage House Creations, which they opened in February of 2016, is the culmination of a long-held dream. “My grandfather, Eugene, loved to dabble in flea market goods and antiques,” Michele said. “I feel that we’re carrying on some of that tradition. Through reinvention, time, energy, blood, sweat, tears and love, this store became a reality halfway through our lives.” Michele said that one of the main purposes of the shop is to enhance items that people are getting ready to throw out, and restoring them to their original purpose, adding some unique properties along the way. “I usually take a hand grinder and remove the paint,” Michele said. “That way, I can determine the condition of the article -- whether there’s damage and how bad it might be. I can also find out how old it is, what it’s made of, and whether it’s been constructed using dovetails or just slapped together with wood glue and no nails.” Michele said that her husband, Michael, is an active partner in the concern, aiding with the restoration as well as creating wooden items from scratch.

“He really likes to work with those outdoor benches which have the wrought iron sides to them,” she said. “He’ll sandblast those down, and, if we can salvage the wood, we’ll do it. We also use a lot of piano wood, because his dad used to take old pianos and tear them apart. We’ll plane and shave off the outside, and what’s usually under there is nice poplar wood. We’ll use that for the slats if the originals are too far gone.” Michele said that, as far as creating original pieces is concerned, she’ll generally leave that to her husband. “He’s a lot better with power tools than I am,” she admitted, “so I let him go at it.” M&M Carriage House Creations is located at 730 Saxtons River Road, Saxtons River, Vt., 05154. Jaffrey’s Ghost Chair recalls an ancient local family

I

By Eric Stanway

f you take the Jaffrey Road out of Fitzwilliam, keep a good eye out for the Philips-Heil cemetery, located on the left hand side. It’s an ancient graveyard, with one particular feature of interest -- a gigantic stone chair, carved out of solid granite. The inscription on the chair reads “J. Ross, 1871.” All of his relatives are gathered around the family burial plot, as if getting ready for dinner. This memorial is to local farmer Jonas Ross, who was born in 1784, and purchased 100 acres of land on nearby Cobleigh Hill, on January 15, 1814. It was said that pretty much all of his family were terrified of him, and he ruled them with an iron hand. Jonas actually died in 1861, and it was some ten years later that one of his relatives, Eliza Jane Fay, commis-

MAY/JUNE/JULY 2018

sioned the carving of the chair. She’d been out of town for years, but just came back to Jaffrey for this purpose. The chair’s purpose is outlined in the town history in considerable detail: “A striking memorial is that to the north end of the yard, looking across to Gap Mountain. It is a great stone chair, fit to be the throne of a monarch of the hills. It is a memorial of the Ross family, three generations of whom lived hereabouts. It is said that, according to the belief of a descendent, spirits often return to the scenes of their earthly existence, and so, with filial respect, she placed for them the chair, facing the sunset, where in seemly fashion they may sit at ease when they return to muse upon the scene of their earthly existence. “For most of those who are resting here the final journey was brief as their temporal homes were near-by, and of-

ten they had looked with composure across the unobstructed fields to this pleasant hillside where they counted on a peaceful sleep and glorious awakening. Upon their gravestones are the old sentiments of sorrow and loss, sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust in a better hereafter. Their epitaphs and inscriptions are our introduction to those who have come the way of the earth before us. They are the means by which they have sought to communicate to us, as in duty bound, the lessons they had learned from the brevity and life and certainty of death.” The chair faces west, and must have had a good view of the sun setting over the hills and fields at the time it was constructed. These days, of course, the vista is obscured by a large forest of new-growth trees. All the same, that doesn’t take away from the mystery and spookiness of the spot.

NEW ENGLAND’S BEST SHOPS & SERVICES Not Just Produced & Antique Junction Update

Hundreds of products all in one shop!

by Michele Jones

It is so nice to see a shop evolve over time and change with the seasons! Beth Hunt has taken great strides with Not Just Produced. I first visited this shop last fall and this visit was as nice, or better than, my first encounter.

LOCAL PRODUCE & MORE Penny Candy Counter Local Artisans

Beth is obviously in her element as she visits with customers and vendors. She lets me once again explore on my own and experience the shop as a regular customer would. I took out my notes and photos from that first visit for reference and discovered that it’s a whole new world. A lot of the same vendors are still there (often with new lines added), but always with a new twist (a changed display or a new location). Different items caught my eye, and that is one of the signs of a great shop owner. Since I am here very early in Spring, there isn’t much produce on display— except for the first crop of spinach that has me drooling. Beth tells me that crops from seventeen local farmers coming in soon. The coolers and freezer are fully stocked with local meats and cheeses and free-range duck and chicken eggs. New this visit are some locally-bottled maple spritzers. Local bee products are still here. Maple syrup hasn’t left, but added are some bottles infused with added flavors—bourbon, smoked, and ghosted (as in ghost peppers) sound like great additions to barbeque sauces and apple pie and vanilla sound like special touches to ice cream. There are jams, relishes, pickles, dips, salsas, sauces, and mustards as before. Newly added are flavored oils and vinegars from Monadnock Oil and Vinegar and a nice selection of Jack’s Crackers. Dragging myself away from the food corner, I begin to explore the gorgeous items offered from fifty-two local artisans. I can’t begin to list the variety featured in this shop and the prices are not to be believed! Old favorites are still here from Moose Mountain and Thistle in Thyme Soaps & Necessities. Things that newly caught my eye this time were: hand-made coconut guitar picks, tooth-fairy pillows, funky and functional purses and water bottle carriers, cool jewelry, Scrabble art, oil portraits created from photographs, and books and music from local authors and musicians. That list only scratches the surface—if you have an occasion coming up or want to treat yourself to something special without breaking the bank, this shop is worth the trip. But don’t stop there! Lift the curtain and check out Antique Junction. “Antique, Vintage, Retro, Unique” is definitely an appropriate tagline. Dealer booths and consignment items are blended in with displays of unique woodcrafts. Here again, the selection is broad from china, records, photographs and books, to vintage signs, furniture and tools. And the prices are reasonable. The only thing you’ll be searching for after this visit is more time to come back and look again. MAY/JUNE/JULY 2018

S

ince its settlement in 1733, many strange events have transpired in the seemingly quiet City of Keene. Join us as we explore a few of the more bizarre anecdotes from its history, including the persecuted Tory who hid in a cave; the man who was found dead by chloroform in the middle of a busy street; a tragedy at a bowling alley that ended in violence and suicide; and a young man who discovered he could tame lions at his whim. All this lies within, along with many more tales that make up the tapestry of this ancient city.

Open Letter from Jolene Forsyth Dear Community (Regular Readers, First Timers, and Advertizers—and their neighbors and friends), This publication has been undergoing a lot of changes over the past year: •

Quarterly publication. New England has four seasons, so do we. For Readers, we try to keep our information relevant and durable. We want to be something you can go back to again and again — to plan sensible shopping loops nearby or to map out grand weekend expeditions. For Advertisers, our team isn’t in your face every month. Plus, you now have lead time to be more creative in your ad space, plan special events, or ask to be featured in an article. Smaller format. Our attempt at becoming more practical. For Readers, we are large enough not to get lost in the catalog shuffle, but easy to read on the road. For Advertisers, you’ll never get lost “below the fold” and you can more easily integrate your ad with a feature article.

These changes are all interconnected. We have concluded that, for us, the traditional business model of a for-profit company just doesn’t quite fit. (Yes, we need to make a living, but that isn’t the only reason we publish.) • •

We love our little corner of the world—New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. There are few parts of the country that have such physical diversity—cities, mill towns, and villages; seacoast, rolling countryside, and real mountains. So many opportunities to explore. We publish to celebrate that diversity.

We have a personal passion for antiques and crafts and that was heavily reflected in our early issues. But as we have traveled around visiting various shops and events, we couldn’t help but notice other cool businesses next door or around the corner or even three miles out of town but on the way. Therefore, we have made a commitment to be more than just a niche publication. We encourage diversity and participation.

When we interviewed shop owners they never seemed to talk just about their shop. They talked about their neighbors and their customers and often the craftsmen who made the products on their shelves. And every one of these owners was quick with a recommendation if we needed a bite to eat before we got back on the road. Each owner demonstrated so clearly that they were part of their community. We publish to strengthen those ties of community, realizing that every reader we send to a particular shop has other interests or needs that can tie into that visit, if only we tell them those opportunities exist.

That leads back to something we said earlier, we publish to make a living (not a killing). We are not in this to get rich. We keep our prices affordable so we can help small businesses and artisans get the word out about what they do. Businesses: We hope you will join us in our mission by letting other owners know about our publication, our rates, our articles, and the other services we offer. Readers: Keep letting us know about your experiences at shops you read about here.

And to all of you, drop us a line about your own discoveries that we may have missed amongst the nooks and crannies that make our region so special and our community so diverse.

— Jolene

Fighting For Our Four-Legged Family Members and Ourselves

by Michele Jones

It looks like it is going to be another rough flea and tick season. Of all the summer pests, these guys really make my skin crawl whether they are on me or on my pets. The whole idea of sucking blood is bad enough, but when you realize they can transmit disease—yuck! Let’s face it, this is war. In order to prepare for battle, we must first know the enemy. Fleas: These small, flightless insects are external parasites, living on the blood of birds and mammals. Even in adult form they are tiny (less than one-sixth of an inch long) and usually brown in color. They aren’t easy to see on your pet or in your home. And good luck if you try to catch them. Not only are they fast, they can jump up to eight inches in a single leap. Each bite is small, but results in painful, itchy red bumps from an allergic reaction to the flea’s saliva. If the flea is infected, it can also transmit disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and internal parasites (tapeworm). If their targeted host is small (a kitten for example), fleas can cause anemia, since each flea consumes fifteen times its weight in blood each day. You can’t solve the problem by just removing fleas on your pet. It’s a game of numbers, complicated by time variances in the flea life cycle. An adult female can lay up to fifty eggs per day. Unlike some insect eggs, these are not sticky and fall off the host onto carpets, bedding, floorboards and soil. Depending on environmental conditions these eggs can take from two days to several weeks to hatch. The larvae feed on all sorts of organic matter and spin a cocoon in one to three weeks. The fleas can remain in this pupae stage for anywhere from a week to several years. Plan of attack: Vacuum your home regularly, emptying the container often so any eggs you capture won’t just hatch and re-infest your home. Wash bedding and areas where pet sleeps. You can also use insecticides or natural alternatives to treat the environment. Medicated shampoos can clean your pet and remove any adult fleas from their coat, but they are only effective for a few days. Flea collars, powders, sprays, and spot-on treatments target adult fleas and some include an IGR that inhibits egg and larval development. Consult your vet or retailer about which brands are the most effective in your area. Oral medications that further interfere with the flea life cycle are also available from your vet. Whatever plan of attack you choose, read and follow all Ticks: Related to spiders, ticks are arachnids rather than insects, but are still blood-sucking external parasites. After hatching, ticks go through 3 life stages, but unlike fleas, all stages look about the same and all require blood meals. As larvae, they are about the size of a Deer Tick Dog Tick grain of sand and tend to feed on birds and rodents. As nymphs, they are about the size of poppy seeds and will move on to another host, sometimes another rodent or a larger mammal. As adults, they are about the size of a sesame or apple seed and once again they seek out a larger host. Did you know you can sell In New England, we find black-legged ticks (aka, deer or bear ticks) and dog TIM CAMPBELL ART ticks. Neither species transmits disease at the larval stage, but if they feed on an infected animal both species can become carriers as nymphs and adults. in YOUR shop? Ticks don’t jump, hop, swim, or fly. They crawl up plants and leaf litter and wait for a meal to brush by. If anything, ticks make my skin crawl more than fleas, since they can hang on for days while completing their meal. Plan of attack: Using repellant and protective clothing, combined with regular tick checks on all family members is the best defense. Ticks are going to crawl around to find the best spot, so they are often found or dislodged before they attach. But if you do find an attached tick, don’t panic. Use fine-pointed tweezers or a tick spoon to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Steadily pull backwards gently but firmly. Don’t squeeze the tick’s body as you might be pushing infectious organisms into the wound. Wash the skin and your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Ticks are vulnerable to a number of pesticides and repellents—deet and Taking orders now! permethrin are among the more effective ingredients. Team Relaunches Greenerborough to Ratchet Up Sustainability! Peterborough, NH – A team of environmentally concerned citizens has taken on the task of reviving Greenerborough, a popular event focused on sustainability. The new event, to be held Saturday May 5, sponsored by Froling Energy and Nature’s Green Grocer, is dubbed “Greenerborough 2.0” to indicate that it is a new version of the event. Located in the beautiful Monadnock Region, Greenerborough Day activities are within 50 miles of 2.3 million people, many of whom want to learn about products, techniques and services that will increase the sustainability of their family’s future. “We felt that Greenerborough was important to the region’s image so we decided to revive it,” says Jeanne Dietsch. “We want Greenerborough 2.0 to showcase our region’s sustainability leaders and to challenge people to ratchet up sustainability each year.” Other community members assisting with the relaunch of Greenerborough include: Alexandra Walker, Amelia Tracy, Emma Shapiro-Weiss, James Kelly, Ruth Bednarz, Sean Ryan, Susan Mansfield, Sheldon Pennoyer and Joyce Carroll. Unlike the original Greenerborough, Greenerborough 2.0 will have two parts: the Greenerborough Fair and Greenerborough Day. The Greenerborough Fair offers companies, non-profits and other groups exhibit space and a means to meet with families and the public from 9am-4pm at the Peterborough Community Center on Rte 101 at Elm Street. There will be activities for children and talks on sustainability from consumer purchasing and building practices to transportation, alternative energy and agricultural technology. Greenerborough Day includes sponsors in the larger community. For example, Toadstool Bookshop, will feature a table of books on environmental topics. GoHydro is rehabbing dams in New Hampshire. The Greenerborough Team invites area museums, restaurants, shops, concurrent events and other venues to join Greenerborough Day as sponsors. Visitors to Greenerborough Fair will be encouraged to eat, shop and visit Greenerborough Day sponsors before and after they stop in at the Fair. Companies and other organizations wishing to sponsor Greenerborough Day or exhibit at the Greenerborough Fair can write info@Greenerborough.orgor find more information at Greenerborough.org.

or the last 35 years, Charles Evans and Linda Wright have been servicing New England and the nation with top-notch service coupled with old-fashioned courtesy. “This is the kind of antique store you used to find in this parts,” Linda said. “We don’t just sell items -- we actively engage the customer. People seem to like this approach, as they keep coming back.” The stock in the store is a smorgasbord of artifacts from bygone eras. The store buys and sells a variety of antiques, ranging from phonographs, country and decorative items, Civil War memorabilia and a host of assorted vintage furniture. ”I feel like I‘ve been in the antique business most of my life,” Linda said. ”I was involved in numerous other shops before this one, having originally started out in auctions.” “Our inventory and stock changes often, so we tell customers to stop by the shop to check out our new antiques,” Linda said. “If you are looking for something for something specific,

feel free to give us a call and we will do our best to help you find what you are looking for. It is packed wall-to-wall with just about any kind of antique one might imagine or covet. A chance encounter between a singer and a thief changed the lives of both By Eric Stanway

F

or such a small town, Fitzwilliam has more than its share of strange stories. For instance, here is the odd tale of Ossian Euclid Dodge, a singer and temperance activist who was invited to perform in this town in the long-ago spring of 1846. Born in Cayuga, N.Y., in 1820, Dodge had made a lifelong vow to his mother to never touch alcohol at the age of five. He also showed early promise of musical talent, and was determined to present the public with comic songs without the slightest hint of innuendo. Thus it was, at the tender age of 26, he came to our town, to present an uplifting concert in the Meeting House. Disembarking from his train in Winchendon, Massachusetts, he left most of his luggage in that town, and set off on foot down what is now Route 12, carrying nothing but his guitar.

MAY/JUNE/JULY 2018

About midway through his trek, on a lonely part of the road, he was suddenly accosted by a ragged man armed with a makeshift club, who demanded what money he had. As it turned out, however, the fellow was not the most adept of muggers, and Dodge quickly disarmed him and threw him into a ditch. He then demanded to know what forced him to this desperate act. The assailant quickly dissolved into tears, telling the singer that, although he was a man of respectable upbringing, bad company had brought him low. He had set out with his wife to find employment, but to no avail. To make things worse, she was now pregnant, and was, even at that moment, about to give birth in a nearby barn. Dodge instructed the fellow to direct him to the barn. Once there, he saw that the man was telling the truth, and his wife was, indeed, in the final stages of labor. Dodge then hastened to Fitzwilliam,

where he acquired a horse and wagon, and brought the couple into town. They were then taken to the Fitzwilliam Tavern, and provided with a nourishing meal. Before the night was over, the wife had given birth to a baby boy. The next evening, Dodge held his concert, the entire proceeds of which, amounting to 45 dollars, were donated to the poor couple. Dodge then went on his way, thinking little of his adventure. We now move along some 14 years. Dodge was working in his music store, when a well-dressed gentleman entered, and enquired after him. Dodge had no idea who this person was, until he was informed that this was the same individual he had helped on that long-ago night. The man had gained a position as a clerk in the town, and remained here for a year, before heading out west, eventually settling in Illinois. There, he had prospered, and had been elected to the Illinois legislature. His wife had since died, but the

47

Ossian Euclid Dodge child thrived, and had been named after his illustrious benefactor. Thus it was, that a chance encounter on a dark and lonely road had led to the salvation of a desperate couple, who were at the end of their rope.

The Boutique will offer a consultation area for custom ordering, paint/materials to purchase, vintage jewelry & purses.

Built by Benjamin Taylor in 1815 as a general store, it served the community as a post office, stagecoach stop, along with space for sales work. Still in the Taylor family, it now houses a wonderful eclectic collection of antiques, collectibles and vintage Christmas. All are beautifully displayed on two floors in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

The Showroom will be filled with EVC originals, antiques, vintage, primitives & architectural salvage pieces. In my workshop clients will be able to view work in progress and ask questions on techniques. FREE First Consultation, Gift Certificates, ‘Item of the Week’ & ‘Bulk Purchase’ Specials will also be offered. Hours: Pre-Grand Opening Friday 6/1, 6pm-8pm & Saturday 6/2, 10am-4pm.
