NEW ENGLAND’S BEST SHOPS & SERVICES Hunt & Gather has something for everyone all under one roof By Eric Stanway
B
ack in 2015, veteran antique dealers Steve and Heather Bukovsky decided to open up a new business in the old Auto Museum in the center of Princeton. The result was Hunt & Gather, a 6,000 square-foot multi-dealer antique and vintage group shop with something to appeal to all tastes. Within, visitors will find over 40 vendors, offering everything from Farmhouse to Primitive to Shabby Chic, as well as hand-made and custom furniture. The shop also hosts open markets during the spring and summer, allowing local vendors to rent a table and set up for the day. These events are restricted to vintage and handmade vendors, so customers will know exactly what to find. “I’ve been in the antique business some 20 years now,” Heather said. “It started out for me when I opened my interior design firm in North Carolina. As part of my work, I usually ended up helping the clients get rid of unwanted
pieces as well as acquiring extra items they might need in the future. Of course, this meant that I soon had warehouses full of stuff. Although this might be seen as hoarder sickness, I soon found I really enjoyed it. I was driving around, meeting new people, picking over estate sales and working with my design clients all at the same time. Eventually, this developed into my having a local booth.” When the couple moved back to New England, they found an opportunity to realize their long-held dream of opening a group shop. “My mind is always spinning with ideas, wondering what will be hot next, or what I can do to make the space different and creative,” Heather said. “My husband, on the other hand, is more hands-on, adept at building displays. We envisioned a different kind of shop, geared more toward the modern approach to antique shopping. As it turned out, I would run my own booth, and he would handle the day-to-day operations. He’s the one in charge of management
operations and the real brain behind the store.” Heather speaks highly of her vendors, and feels they significantly enhance the business as a whole. “We love these people like family,” she said. “They are all so talented, and bring so much to the business. As any good shop owner knows, there is no shop without a good symbiotic relationship. We have a really good mix of styles, sure to appeal to a variety of customers, from
hand-sewn goods to primitives, as well as vintage and new home decor, and even our own line of t-shirts. We really enjoy helping our customers build their style and accents for their homes. For us, it’s a complete passion, promoting our vintage lifestyle and fostering a life focus to build our business.” Heather said that the satisfaction she gains from her chosen profession goes far beyond any profit motive. “As most folks in this business would agree, this job is awesome,” she said. “The very best part for us is meeting all of our fellow dealers and shop owners. It is such a joy to see our friend Sherri of Thyme and a Place or Kim from Steeple Antiques at an auction or flea market. Working closely with Linda Skinner, whose father founded Skinner Antiques, to picking a barn with Joanne and Denis Dargin, who know more about Primitives than anyone I know, to visiting Gail at at Jeffrey’s Antiques Co-op, it’s an honor to be surrounded by all these amazing people and call them friends.
I’m humbled to be learning from them, taking in all their valuable expertise.” In all, Heather doesn’t see any profession that could afford her the personal joy that this one does. “For me, being a dealer and shop owner is like nothing in the world, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” she said. “The people you meet really are your kin, your brothers and sisters, your mentors and your apprentices. It’s a great life, and one for which we are extremely grateful.” Hunt & Gather is located at 194 Worcester Road (Route 31), Princeton, MA 01541. Phone: (978) 464-5555. Hours: Closed Monday and Tuesday; Open 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; Open 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday; and 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Gently-used items find new homes at Begin Again By Eric Stanway
F
or many years, Begin Again, a small shop nestled next to the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Swanzey, has been providing quality used goods to area residents at reasonable prices. Recently, however, the shop hit a few setbacks, and it looked for a while as if it might close its doors forever. Then, about a year ago, Fanny Elouz stepped in to take over the reins, and now there is a new sense of optimism for this business, due in no small part to her tireless efforts. “I used to own a number of hair accessory stores around the country, including one in the Prudential Center in Boston,” Fanny explained. “When my son was born, I decided to step back, which I did for six years, just holding a part-time job. Eventually, however, I decided that I needed to do something else, and started looking around for business opportunities. On my way to get my car serviced up the road I learned that Begin Again might be closing its doors soon. After a week of thinking about it, I came back to inquire about the possibility of taking over the business, and my adventure began.” Begin Again offers a wide variety of stock, including consignment goods, donated pieces, and items that Fanny, herself, finds on her shopping expeditions. Most
important to Fanny is the customer service they offer. Fanny and her staff bring a personal touch to providing service. “This is a happy place. We love helping people. We are interested in what people are looking for. We just outfitted a couple with a wedding dress and the whole personalized shopping experience delighted them and made them think differently about what one can find at a consignment store.” “I’m exploring to find the right focus for the store. My hope is to make higher-end goods available to people at a lower price,” she said. “That way, I can offer something really different. We want to be in retail in a helpful and meaningful way.” Fanny said that an important aspect of the business are its charitable concerns, a tradition she is eager to continue. “We’re building on the work of the original owner, Diane, by helping the community,” she said. “We have a mix of retail, consigned items, and donated items. This enables us to work with charitable organizations such as homeless shelters and various churches and synagogues to offer our donated items to people and families in need. On the consignment side of the business, we provide another option to find unique and essential home goods at reasonable prices for people who may have lost everything and who have to build up their homes again from scratch or for students and others who are just starting out and who are on a budget. This is very important work, and we’re committed to continuing it.” Every season brings out new and unusual gems for casual shoppers and for collectors to discover. This spring and summer, Fanny and her staff look forward to fill a real niche in the community, and help people out in the process.

The Wooly Lamb Knitting Company offers yarn, and so much more By Eric Stanway
W
hen Paul and Theresa Murphy opened The Wooly Lamb Knitting Company in November of 2016, it represented the culmination of a long-held dream. The establishment is a yarn and consignment shop, which also holds classes in crochet, knitting, needle felting and wool spinning. They also sell a plethora of different kinds of yarn, including King Cole from England. Their real focus, however, is to focus on local product, including local wool from around the area. “We have lots of different kinds of yarn, from acrylic all the way up to artisan wools that are hand spun and dyed,” she said. Theresa pointed out that they have recently added some beautiful vintage yarns as consignment. They also just received a beautiful shipment of timidity and helix by HiKoo and Zauberwolle by Schoppel and Fair Isle from China which has proven so popular that they cannot
keep in on the shelves. Additionally, they carry ChiaoGoo, Clover, Knitters Pride and Addie needles. Theresa said that this was a project that was a long time coming, and grew from a hobby into a full-time vocation. “It all started about 15 years ago, when I was in AmeriCorps, working in a domestic and sexual violence program,” she said. “I found that knitting was a really good way to relax, so I kept at it. All the time, my husband was encouraging me to do this full-time, so I started doing some research. Well, a couple of months in, I walked into this building and was just floored by how cute and cozy the space was. Everyone who walks in here feels exactly the same way. I started this off by the seat of my pants, and I’m always changing it. I’m adding more yarn all of the time. We’re not making a lot of profit right now, as everything we make goes right back into the shop.” The store holds a number of workshops throughout the year, ranging from beginners to more advanced classes, involving
making cable bags and barnyard shawls. They also hold a knitting social every Saturday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm as well as crocheting classes. Theresa stressed that there is a lot more to this shop than meets the eye, as they sell a full selection of needles, as well as local crafts, such as jewelry, earrings, knit ware, local soaps, and all sorts of work by local artisans. “This is so much more than just a yarn shop,” she said. “It’s a place to come and learn a new skill, meet friends and most importantly, relax.” The Wooly Lamb Knitting Company is located at 305 Marlboro Street, Keene. Phone: (603) 762-5737. The store is open Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The store is closed Monday and Wednesday. You can also visit their website at https://thewoolylambknittingcompany. com/ or their Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/woolysticks/.

SAVE MONEY!
ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED
(Three Frugal Strategies) By Judith K. Dial
My Dad, who was a consultant, lost one of his major gigs when I was in Junior High. He made a few changes right away, but he wasn't young, nor had he needed to count pennies for many years. I thought figuring out how we could live on less was an exciting challenge! I suggested that instead of buying paper placemats/napkins, we use the nice set he'd been given as a gift? (We'd used them for holidays and birthdays before that.) Dad said, "You're better at seeing new ways to save money than I am."
TREE
I've been on the hunt ever since. After decades of this I came up with some basics:
SERVICE LLC
There's only one way to save money on purchased goods -- spend less. That's pretty obvious, right?
Fully Insured Free Estimates
What isn't so obvious and what I learned after years of looking at the problem is that there are really only three strategies for saving money:
Dustin Wilcox
1. Find a cheaper substitute. 2. Pay less for the same product. 3. Do without.
Marlborough, NH 603-363-8197 24 HR Emergency Services
MARLBOROUGH · DUBLIN NH
Cheaper substitutes include: · Buying used durable goods. · Back to basics, DIY, Mega Cooking or Once A Month Cooking · Use whatever form of a product is cheapest: chicken thighs for white meat instead of breasts, for example. Paying less for the same product includes: · Coupons, refunds, and sale shopping. · Alternate sources: dumpster diving, freecycle, ethnic markets, etc. · Diluting/reusing more of the product.
bring home the rustic charm of
authentic, lodge-style
log furniture
The last strategy, doing without, is usually presented as a form of the other two.
and accessories
For example, people will tell you to avoid buying coffee at the high-end coffee store. They'll point out that if you brew your own at home, it's significantly cheaper. This is both strategy 1 and 2; it's a cheaper substitute, and you're paying less for the same product. However, it also fits #3, as you're doing without something, the trip to the coffee shop. If you brew your coffee at home and reuse 1/2 the grounds in the 2nd pot, it's a cheaper substitute (#1). If you roast your own coffee, again, it's a cheaper substitute.
RUSTIC FURNITURE & HOME DECOR
There's nothing wrong with this. What irks me is seeing people recycle the strategies with new specifics, again and again. The specifics indeed might be new, but the underlying strategies aren't.
- Visit us online at -
www.RusticFurnitureGallery.com
If you keep the strategies in mind, being frugal becomes an attitude rather than a list of specific practices. You'll find your own ways to save!

Valentine’s Day has a long and storied history By Eric Stanway
W
hen you snuggle up with your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day, you might think you’re the only two people in the world. Actually, what you’re doing is celebrating a ritual which has its roots over 2,000 years ago. The festival of affection, held in mid-February, has its roots in the founding of ancient Rome, and the cave in which Rome’s founders, Romulus and Remus, were cared for by a she-wolf in the fifth century B.C. The cave, which stands to this day under the Palatine Hill, was the site of a ritual known as the Lupercalia, in which high-born boys were paired off with young girls. This was done through a lottery, in which the girls’ names were placed in a box, so that the boys could draw them out. The couple thus selected was then expected to stay together for the next year. As with many of the practices of the pagan church, this ritual was co-opted
nearly seven hundred years later, and combined with the legend of Saint Valentine, a priest who lived near Rome in about 270 B.C. The Emperor at that time was Claudius II, and he was having a rough time of it. By this point, Rome had stretched its resources almost to the breaking point. Education was on the decline, corruption was rife, taxes were soaring, and there were always the barbarians at the gate. Claudius was desperate. He needed soldiers – men who weren’t averse to spending years on end in the most desperate of conditions, for the good of Rome. Obviously, family men were right out, as people pining for the warmth of home and hearth weren’t the most committed of warriors. Painted into a corner, he saw only one way out of this. He banned marriage. Predictably, this did not make him popular with the young people of Rome. They were determined to marry anyway, even if it meant taking the vows in hiding. As performing the ceremony was a

quick road to execution, however, many priests were understandably reluctant to officiate. This is where Valentine stepped in. A man of strong convictions, he was also a member of the nascent Christian church. Feeling that his duties as a priest superseded his allegiance to the Emperor, he met the young lovers in secret locations, and joined them in illegal matrimony. Well, it wasn’t long before news of this “friend of lovers” reached Claudius, and he had the young priest brought before him. At that meeting, Claudius found himself impressed by the integrity and bravery of Valentine. He attempted to convert him to paganism. In turn, Valentine tried to convert the Emperor to Christianity. Brave or not, in that moment, Valentine had secured his own fate. While Valentine was in prison awaiting execution, he befriended his jailer, a man by the name of Asterius. This jailer had a daughter, who had been blind since birth. Miraculously, Valentine re-

stored her sight, and gained her undying affection. Just before his execution on February 24, 270 B.C., Valentine requested a pen and paper from his jailer. On it he wrote a farewell letter to the man’s daughter, signing it “From Your Valentine.” Ever since that time, Valentine’s Day has been a date where lovers set aside their daily concerns, and make time to focus on each other.

Fitzwilliam had a shootout during prohibition By Eric Stanway
W
hen we think of Prohibition, and the inevitable liquor-running that went with it, our thoughts generally turn to those famous big-city gangsters from Chicago and New York, such as Al Capone and “Legs” Diamond. The idea that they would be running through the quiet little town of Fitzwilliam seems absurd. On August 13, 1924, however, the Town Common became the scene of a violent confrontation between federal and state officers and a notorious liquor runner from Leominster, Mass., by the name of Joseph Visalli. He and an associate, one William Devoid of Keene, had hoped to evade the authorities by taking back roads. On this day, however, luck was not with them. It seems that the authorities had set up a “liquor trap” -- basically, a roadblock -- in the center of town with the express

When the police stopped Visalli, he made a pretense of getting out of the car, as the officers mounted the running boards. At the last moment, however, he gunned the engine and peeled out of town, throwing the police into the road. Staggering to their feet, they fired several shots at the vehicle, some of which

pierced the back of the car, but failed to halt his escape. As he careened down the road, Visalli also managed to knock down one Frederick A. Tisdale, a resident of Dorchester, Mass. Tisdale was transported to the Fitzwilliam Tavern, where he was treated for a double fracture of the left ankle. Visalli and Devoid were finally apprehended in Troy, and transported back to Fitzwilliam, where they were turned over to Deputy Sheriff Tucker. In court, Visalli faced three charges: refusing to stop after an accident, illegal possession of liquor, and illegal transportation. Bail was set on $500 on each of the liquor charges and $800 on the charge of refusing to stop after the accident. He was held on $1500 bonds. Devoid, meanwhile, was charged with illegal possession of liquor and illegal transportation, to which he plead not guilty. One can only imagine the excitement this event incurred among the local population.

I would think that, for a period of time, the main topic of conversation around these parts centered on the day that the police and gangsters had a confrontation right in the middle of Fitzwilliam.

By Donna Harwood, D.V.M.
In previous columns, the talk has been about nutrition, balance of the body’s parts as well as the “hands-on” things owners can do to assess their pets. It’s time to try to understand felis domesticus, better known as the cat!
The Economizer - PO Box 10571, Swanzey, NH 03446 By entering you agree to let us publish your responses.
You must go on adventures to find out where you truly belong.
First is to know that cats break all the rules! What with relative certainty applies to most breeds of dogs, won’t hold true for cats. Gum color that may look normal can come up anemic on blood work, or just the reverse; pale color yet adequate numbers. If it’s safe in a cat, then it is safe in a dog. The reverse isn’t true. They process drugs differently from the dog. Aspirin takes DAYS to clear a cat’s system, the dog, just hours. Tylenol is toxic to the cat, but can be tolerated by the dog. I think it is in part due to them being classified as an OBLIGATE carnivore; the dog is an omnivore though predominantly a carnivore. The leading cause of death in cats is trauma, be it by cars or euthanasia done to control populations. The second leading cause of death is kidney failure. RIGHT here, Chinese medicine has given me an epiphany after all these (thirty-three) years. And it is this: In Chinese medicine cats are of the five elements, most commonly FIRE. They are the Emperor, or Donald J. There is what you want them to do, what you want to do for them, and there is what they will let you do, or they choose to do. The “C” in Attitude is silent!
- Sue Fitzmaurice
FIRE represents the heart, if it is your element, it is what you will usually succumb to. The heart guards the mind, hence “Cattitude.” But here’s where kidney fits in and distracts us. KIDNEY is WATER, and water puts out or controls fire. That’s Chinese medicine. Enter Western medicine or just plain normal physiology. The kidney serves to filter our blood, and it also serves to monitor blood pressure and oxygen supply. It is a high blood pressure organ that receives 25% of blood flow every beat of the heart which allows it to do its job. If it doesn’t think that there is enough oxygen, it will request an order of oxygen carrying units – red blood cells. So, when the heart isn’t delivering adequately and the kidneys order up more cells, a dilemma will evolve – or actually, devolve. This is a very simple overview, but it fits in the framework of the column.

A case presented to me that so played out this relationship. An Abyssinian presented with skin issues: her feet were displaying ulcerative skin lesions. Her ears were crusted, she was thin, barely over five pounds, she was a young adult, just five years of age. Abyssinians are often fraught with kidney issues. You say Abyssinian, I’ll say kidney disease. And then there was this girl. On assessment her ecg suggested issues, her radiographs suggested issues, an ultrasound on her heart looked “flimsy,” yet her red blood cells were elevated. She was in her own way trying to problem solve. Her owner was trying too, by trading up her food to fresher, even raw. She was being managed for an autoimmune condition as truly that’s how her feet looked. It was how her system reacted when her circulation to her peripheries were challenged. Treatment was addressed by medication to strengthen her heart, and within six weeks she gained three pounds and her skin issues resolved. Long term goals are to have her diet change help restore her heart health and hopefully become drug free. It made me appreciate all the more, the uniqueness of the cat and of the relationships of all the elements to each other. This animal had been a breeding queen, and they give of themselves for every litter they carry, so at five she had perhaps “aged” faster than most. She was then spayed, an anesthetic challenge, that may have been the stress to her body that she just couldn’t handle. Subsequently she started to “fail” at her peripheries.

Long story short, she has made me an even more thorough doctor when looking at felis domesticus, and perhaps learn to embrace their “Cattitude!”
