Report from the Board Hello and welcome to the May edition of Spotlight for 2005 PLEASE advise anyone who is not getting their copy of Spotlight to get in touch with us. South Kilburn NDC puts out its own magazine for residents every month. Spotlight is produced to keep you informed on what is going on in your community and to keep residents up-to-date on what we are doing here at the NDC. We want to ensure that everyone who lives in the area receives their copy and want to hear from anyone who is not getting a handdelivered copy through their letter box. Anyone who is experiencing problems with delivery should contact DISK on 020 7625 2170 or SKNDC 020 7328 9031.
YET ANOTHER non-stop month here in South Kilburn! We’ve had the Childcare Subsidies launch, the exhibition of the four possible Granville New Homes designs and of course not forgetting the Talent Showcase. At the last board meeting we discussed the National Evaluation report on the progress being made by the NDC in South Kilburn. It noted that we have made very impressive improvements in the last year, especially in our work on the built environment. However as always there is room for improvement and in the following months we will be focusing on our income and employment themes, making sure every resident has the opportunities to train, receive employment advice and get the job they want. It is great to hear about the steps being made by
the Youth Board, which is down to the hard work of all those taking part. It is brilliant to see young people taking control and show us how it is done! If you would like to get involved, all the information you need can be found on page 10. Finally I could not go without mentioning the Talent Showcase which took place on Friday 1st April. I went along and was astounded by the level of professionalism by all those who took part. I was also amazed at the number of people who performed and helped arranged the fantastic day – well done! I am already looking forward to the next one.
Tanya Samuel South Kilburn NDC Board Chair
The next Board Meeting is at the Community Resource Centre in Albert Road on May 9th at 6pm.
Buddha Day ON THE 4TH May Buddists celebrate Buddha day, which remembers Buddha’s birthday and is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar. On this day Buddhists celebrate the life of the Buddha and his message of peace to mankind. Buddha Day is celebrated with great joy and vivid colours. Homes are cleaned and decorated in preparation. The "bathing of the Buddha" takes place, where water is poured over the shoulders of statues of the Buddha as a reminder of the need to purify your mind. Temples throughout the Buddhist world serve vegetarian food and a candle lit procession takes place through the streets. The last week in April saw the Jewish festival of Passover, which is one of the most important times
in the Jewish year and remembers how the children of Israel left slavery behind when they left Egypt. Finally, Saturday 23 April saw the celebration of St George’s Day in memory of the patron saint of England.
UPDATE Brent to train local contractors

The open day was a great success with 15 local small contractors attending. Brent Housing Partnership are now currently reviewing the applications, and those who meet the required criteria will receive the training needed so they can play a pivotal role in redeveloping South Kilburn.

Childcare project launched in style FORMER RESIDENT Shola Ama gave her
support to the new Childcare Subsidies project which was officially launched on 8th April with an open day and party at the Marian Centre. The day had something for everyone. Magician and children entertainer Peter Pinner and side kick Donut entertained visitors with his magic tricks. Local dance group Tabot also entertained the audience with their fantastic dancing, as always perfectly choreographed. People were also able to get information about a number of local projects. There were stands from the Healthy Matters project, Childcare Subsidies, the Inland Revenue, Job Centre Plus, Recolo, New Deal for Lone Parents, Sure Start, Brent Childrens Information Service and Community Careers. Shola Ama was the star attraction speaking about her memories growing up in the area and how much it has changed and improved over recent years. She then went on to draw the winning raffle ticket for a £50 Sainsbury voucher. Azmina Sayani who organised the event and runs the Childcare Subsidies project said, "It was great that so many people came, including Shola Ama. It was a brilliant way to get information to
local residents in a fun and informal atmosphere." If you would like more information about the Childcare Subsidies project please contact Azmina on 020 7372 3090 or drop into the office at 19a Malvern Road.

Money Matters HI IT'S SALEAH Well, fourteen residents stepped forward to take up the Money Workshops challenge to get to the heart of the matter. Their relationship with money: attitudes, spending habits and priorities would never be the same again.
Week one: registration, two backed out. Week two: one got job offer. Week three: eleven remain. Week four: still eleven. The question they were faced with – "if money had wings, would it fly away" - true or false - why? Then to the big Graduation Day. On 14th April all eleven made it to the presentation and more importantly have learnt valuable skills on how to budget and feel more confident in all financial situations. Those who have completed the course can now go out and not only use their skills in day to day life but pass them onto friends, relatives and people in the community. The Money Workshops challenge starts again in June 2005. For more information call 0870 760 6834.

Designs for new homes to be built in South Kilburn been on show to local residents. The four day exhibition which took place in the Peel Precinct, by Kilburn Park Station, on Malvern Road and at the Vale Community centre gave residents a chance to look at the four designs created by architects and a steering group of local residents. The designs varied significantly in design with one including a grass roof. Tony Lester, resident and Vice Chair of the Granville New Homes Steering Group said. "It is fantastic to hear the positive feedback from local residents. It makes us realise that all the hard work has been worth it"
A final decision on which design to use will be made by the steering group in late May. It is hoped that building work for the Granville Show Homes will begin sometime in January 2006 to be completed in late 2007.
Clapham Park votes yes for NDC Stock Transfer RESIDENTS in Clapham Park, South London have become the first New Deal for
the Communities organisation to vote yes for a housing stock transfer. Over 59% of residents voted to transfer the ownership of their homes to a community led housing association in March 2006. This is very similar to a vote that is likely to take place in South Kilburn next year, which will guarantee an investment of over £700 million into the housing and community facilities in South Kilburn. Tanya Samuel, Chair of South Kilburn NDC said."I have known many of the residents at Clapham Park for a number of years in particular the Chair, Oliver Higgins. I know this means a great deal to him and the other residents who’ve all been working slavishly alongside their Chief Executive Owen Thompson to ensure the ballot was successful. Well done to them, they deserve it. We hope to achieve a similar success with our ballot in South Kilburn". The successful vote is the first of its kind by a New Deal for the Communities organisation and means an investment of £560 million in Clapham Park.

A voice for the youth of South Kilburn IF YOU have ever thought "Why don’t people ever listen to me?" or "No one cares about what young people want", then this is your chance to put your ideas across and make a real difference for young people in South Kilburn. The NDC is setting up a Youth Board for the area, which will give young people the opportunity to have a real say in matters that affect them. The Youth Board will act as a spokesperson for young people in the area, representing their interests and advising on issues that affect them. Most importantly, the Youth Board will oversee a budget, to spend on projects especially designed to improve the lives of the young people of South Kilburn. All young people between the ages of 11 and 24 within the South Kilburn area are invited to stand as candidates for the Youth Board election which will take place later this year. There will be 6 places on the board for 11-16 year olds, and the other 6 will be for 17-24 year olds. Lucy Barnard [pictured], a member of the steering group of young people that has been set up to advise on and oversee the project, believes the Youth Board will be a really positive thing for South Kilburn: "Young people have a lot to say about what life is like in South Kilburn. They are concerned about all sorts of issues, such as health, drugs, education, employment and facilities to keep them out of trouble. We care about a lot
RACE AND CULTURAL AWARENESS COURSE WHAT is our understanding of the community in
which we live? We live in a multi-cultural society with much diversity, but do we have a real understanding of culture and multi-culturalism? of things but the problem is, we rarely get the chance to change anything and make a difference. The Youth Board will change that – young people really will be able to have a say.
