Report From The Board PLEASE advise anyone who is not getting their copy of Spotlight to get in touch with us. South Kilburn NDC puts out its own magazine for residents every month. Spotlight is produced to keep you informed on what is going on in your community and to keep residents up-to-date on what we are doing here at the NDC. We want to ensure that everyone who lives in the area receives their copy and want to hear from anyone who is not getting a hand-delivered copy through their letter box. Anyone who is experiencing problems with delivery should contact DISK on 020 7625 2170 or SKNDC 020 7328 9031.
As you will see from the article on page 4 we have now had our first Board meeting where we appointed all the positions and have also been on a board residential. It is now time to get down to the hard work and ensure that this new phase of the NDC programme continues the excellent work of the first phase. An important part of this new phase is making sure we leave a positive legacy for the local area and create a South Kilburn that is sustainable in the long term. As always change continues to happen at a fast pace in South Kilburn. Initial works on the Granville Show Homes site is beginning and work on the Albert Road Demonstration Homes is starting to really take shape. At the Board meeting on the 19th September we were given a presentation by the NDC and Brent Council on the

Finally, I would like to say congratulations to everyone who took part and have been elected to the first South Kilburn Youth Board. It is great to see so many young people getting involved in shaping the future of South Kilburn. I would also like to welcome Isha Michael-Sesay as the Youth Board representative on the main NDC Board. If you can believe it, Christmas is just round the corner and we have a lot to do before then!
This month Christians celebrate All Souls Day on the 1st November, it’s a chance to remember all the souls who have died and gone to rest. This month also marks the start of the Hindu Festival of Light also called ‘Diwali’ when lamps or candles are lit and placed around the home signifying the renewal of life.

Firstly, thank you to everyone who took part in the NDC Board elections; the candidates, voters and everyone else who put in the time and effort to make it a great success.
Guy and his fellow conspirators placed 20 barrels of gunpowder in the cellars of the Palace of Westminster.
However one of Guy Fawlkes fellow friends wrote to warn his brother-in-law, Lord Monteagle, not to attend the opening. News of this reached the King. Search parties were sent into the cellar and Guy Fawlkes was arrested and later executed as a traitor.Even to this day, the cellars of the Palace of Westminster are searched before every opening of Parliament, and effigies of Guy Fawlkes are burnt on bonfires all around Britain on the 5th November. This night is known as ‘Bonfire Night’. Remember to be safe when using fireworks, follow our top tips at the bottom of each page.

Announcing…
Gardening Treat Len Williams Court is a remarkable place to live. It has sophiscated, Georgian style communal gardens enclosed by high walls. Its beautiful and relaxing environment is perfect for those who are over 60 years of age. From the top level of these flats residents enjoy a spectacular view of South Kilburn.
large flower pots. The gardening work is displayed in the communal gardens for all to see. So why not go and have a look! If you would like to get in contact with Elders Voice, please contact Jenny Davison on 0208 968 8170 or email JennyD@eldersvoice.org.uk.
From this glorious setting of Len Williams Court, Elders Voice launched a gardening and fun day on Friday 23rd September. The event was organised by Shirley Ebikeme, Paddington Churches Housing Association (PCHA) Sheltered Scheme Manager and Jenny Davison, Development Worker for Elders Voice. Throughout the day, Loretta Vince, Elders Voice gardener provided professional gardening demonstrations and advice as residents rolled up their sleeves to get involved and learn tips on the art of gardening. Managing Director of PCHA, Pam Lockley said: “It is very good to see how happy people are with the gardening initiative”. Lunch was provided which was a collection of homemade food from all around the world. This was followed by singing from Elders Voice group and an art exhibition on display all day. Residents had the chance to take home mini pots that were planted with herbs like dill, rosemary and thyme. Everybody enjoyed themselves and worked in groups to create
A Workshop of Passion No other subject has stirred as much controversy this year except for the issue of religion. It is a deeply felt spiritual relationship with a Supreme Being, God. Today however, believers of different faiths may interpret the teachings of their religion from the perspective of their culture, society and politics. In the wake of the London bombings in July this year, there were recorded incidents of hostility, and hate crime acts in the country. On Friday, September 23rd 10 am- 3pm Safe and Sound hosted a workshop focusing on religion and race, the two areas of hate crime. The workshop was available for all to attend and take part in the discussion. The workshop explored the myths and stereotypes associated with race, religion and culture. Residents of South Kilburn and agency staff were invited to share their views. Elements of the discussion included; whether the government is tackling and solving the issue of hostility and hate crime and whether there is an opportunity for the people of South Kilburn to develop local initiatives for this. It was a great opportunity to learn something new and informative, as well as change perspective, attitude or behaviour.

The New Board get straight to work… Following the election of the new Board the newly elected members have now got stuck into the next 3 years of their life, continuing the hard work of the NDC. The first meeting of the new Board was held at the Community Resource Centre on the 19th September. Much was discussed at the first meeting and the new Board elected the new Chair, Tanya Samuel and the new Vice Chair, Cecilia Dalson. The Chairs of the committees were decided and are…
Returning Chair Tanya Samuel said. “I am delighted to have been re-elected as a Board member and to remain as Chair. There is a lot to do in the coming years, and I think we have a Board of residents who deeply care about the local area and will work hard for the NDC”. Following the first Board meeting, the new members went on a residential course to learn in more detail what being a Board member entails. The course included deciding the Board’s aims for the next 5 years, what it means to be a Board Member and building a relationship between the new Board and the NDC management team.
Monitoring and Evaluation Committee Chair – Bryan Binning
Finance and General Purposes Chair – Anthony Lester
Risk Assessment Chair – Richard Killen
Newly elected board members T.C (David Ellison) found the trip extremely useful and said: “It was great to meet and talk to the people we are going to be working with over the next 3 years. The trip was also very useful in ensuring we all fully understood what our new role is – I can’t wait to get stuck in!”

The students are now able to identify the skills they would need when they start work in their chosen sector. The next workshop is on Wednesday 30th November which will focus on Hospitality, Leisure, Travel, Tourism and Retail. South Kilburn Goes to Live8! In July, the charity organisation Fairbridge in London were donated eight tickets from AOL UK for young people from across London to go to the Live8 concert in Hyde Park on the 2nd July. The concert was organised to highlight the ongoing problem of global poverty and debt. The web design course that runs in South Kilburn is sponsored by AOL UK and the company has put young people’s websites on-line. Two South Kilburn residents were lucky enough to enjoy the event of a lifetime! The special tickets were exclusive for the “Golden Circle”, and the group were rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous! They were just two amongst millions watching the top performances at the concert. The young people strolled into the hospitality area and ate with TV stars and they stayed there until midnight as the acts got bigger and better. One of the singers from the concert was “Robbie Williams”, and when he performed the crowd went absolutely wild! The web design course is run at Fairbridge, No. 58 Peel Precinct. Little Britain in South Kilburn Monday the 13th June saw our very own Peel Precinct in South Kilburn turn into a film set for the day. The BBC came to shoot scenes from the award winning comedy show ‘Little Britain’. The TV crew began filming in the morning and this lasted throughout the whole day.
Crowds gathered to watch the filming of the star of the show, the outrageously funny Vikki Pollard. The character is well known for denying responsibility for anything, ever. The new series of Little Britain will feature local areas of South Kilburn including: inside the newsagents, outside the Sir Robert Peel pub, the OK club, the park opposite Craig Court and outside Safe and Sound. Residents looked on proudly in amazement to watch the best in British comedy. Shamsi Depsen who runs the newsagent on the Peel Precinct said: “It was great to have the Little Britain team film in the shop – thankfully my customers aren’t as difficult as Vicki Pollard!” (Due to restrictions placed on Spotlight by the BBC regarding the printing of photographs taken by the NDC at the time of filming. This article has only just been given the all clear to go to print) Watch this space for the new series that begins this winter! Or consult your TV guides for more information.
A Helping hand for adult reading and writing skills Want to improve your reading and writing skills? Help is at hand. Meet Dwight Okeke, Youth Board Member At only 11 years old, Dwight Okeke has become a member of South Kilburn’s first ever youth board! He lives on Princess Road , South Kilburn. After having an exciting summer, jam-packed with going to camp with The Ok Club and on day trips with Tabot Club, amongst other things. Dwight’s summer ended with him being successfully nominated onto the Youth Board in August, as a result of being voted for by his peers in South Kilburn. He has since been part of the Youth Board meetings, where the young board members learn about the work of the NDC. Dwight was delighted to be nominated onto the youth board. In his manifesto to the youth of South Kilburn, he said: “the parks look old and dated”. He promised that we would try to have “more fun activities” to give the youth a variety of ways to spend their free time. He has just begun his first year at John Kelly High School. His favourite subjects at school include: Mathematics, Art, Science and Spanish and he is enjoying every minute of it, although he complains “there’s too much homework”. Dwight hopes all young people in South Kilburn will share their concerns with him. He says, “If your voice is rejected come to me!” To find out more about The South Kilburn Youth Board contact Claire White, Young People and Education Theme Manager on 020 7372 6061 or email c.white@skndc.net.

The Community Careers Centre blazed a trail of success at the annual graduation ceremony held on the 7th July 2005 from 6- 9pm. The graduation ceremony was held at The Community Careers Centre, The Tenants Hall, William Dunbar House on Albert Road.
A brand new sandwich shop is open at 3 Masefield House, Stafford Road, NW6 5YU. Serving everything for meat lovers and vegetarians.
The graduation celebrated the success of 65 students on seven different training programmes to upgrade their skills and enhance their employability. The courses ran from January to July and ranged from accountancy to web design. The ceremony was organised by Joseph Awosika Community Careers Project Director. Jack Davies, Chief Executive of South Kilburn NDC was present at the ceremony and met the delighted graduates. One of the graduates, Patrick Odusanya, who gained a Sage Training certification said: “The Sage Training brought into light a most simplified and accurate method of accounting. It was well delivered by a professional consultant with rich experience and a proven track record. The organisation was good, and the environment made learning interesting and easy.” Spotlight would like to congratulate all those who participated on a course. Well done!
Everything from breakfast rolls to lunchtime snacks all at reasonable prices. The shop also sells hot drinks and fruit juices. So come on down and munch!

Security Wardens Profile Moses Bukari, Mursal Yusuf, Gauntlett Pinnock You might recognise Moses, Mursal and Gaunlett. They are all part of a dedicated team of Brent Housing Partnership security wardens who work out of William Saville House. These guys have made a significant contribution to the lives of all residents, making the area safe and secure. Moses describes his role as being extremely interesting “Sussing out people’s attitudes and behaviours makes it a challenging role”. While Mursal really enjoys working as part of a team to improve the lives of all residents, especially those who are disabled or have Moses, Mursal and Gaunlett. mental health problems. “It’s vital to have good customer service skills, diplomacy and a friendly attitude”, he says. Gaunlett has a good bond with the older residents and can often be found helping the elderly to their door but adds that one of the best parts of the job is “seeing youths co-operating”. The wardens always work in patrols of 2 and carry ID at all times. If you are experiencing anti-social problems in your area you can call the helpline on 020 8451 5050. Volunteering opportunities are also available with ‘Space To Talk’ service.
Short term counselling (6 sessions) is available from the Health Matters Shop in Peel Precinct and also the KYC Advice Centre in Kingsgate Road for anyone who wishes to see a counsellor outside of the area. We have counsellors from all over the world represented and so you are sure to find someone you can get along with.” He also added: “Coming for counselling doesn’t mean you are “mad” or that you are a weak person. QPR Football Project News The QPR Football Project is now 6 months old. Since April the project has involved over 400 residents as coaches and players. The project has helped a group of residents to establish South Kilburn Football Club. The team are playing in Middlesex County Football League and have started very well this season. Over 30 residents have taken football qualifications since the start of the project. Many of these have become involved in coaching the schools and evening sessions both as paid QPR coaches and as volunteers. The fantastic response from everyone in South Kilburn has meant that the project is expanding the sessions available. With just over six weeks until Christmas why not come down to one of our sessions and try it out, no matter if you’re an expert or a beginner the coaches will give you helpful advice and it will be loads of fun! The project has increased the number of girls only sessions
available. So if you’re a girl aged under 11 why not come along to Albert Road Day Centre on Mondays from 5pm-6pm. If you’re over 11 Wednesdays at Moberly Sports Centre from 5.30pm-7.30pm is the time for you. The project will also be running a Junior Football Organisers Course in November for ages 14 to 18. This course is for teenagers interested in football and the possibility of becoming a coach. For further information or if you are interested in anything the football project is offering please contact: Nick Perchard on 020 7625 2531.
Dreams of MUSICAL SUCCESS! Two young aspiring rap musicians from Brent City Learning Centre (CLC) in Queens Park have captured the harsh realities of urban life on a CD that they hope will launch their musical careers in the future. The demo CD is the culmination of seven months’ hard work by 21-year-old ‘Justice’ and ‘Young Ricks’, 18, and their friends who regularly meet at The CLC City Learning Centre to create rap music under the name ‘Faculty’.
The CLC has the state of the art music technology equipment; including a sound music studio with music computers, the latest software, instruments and disc-jockey equipment. The project has received funding from South Kilburn New Deal for Communities for 18 hours each week. Attending the CLC has given both the young boys the determination to make something of their lives: “The CLC gives us the space and the peace in which to make music“, said Justice. “We want to be rich and famous, but one day we hope to own our own businesses”, he added. Laurian Adams, CLC Centre Manager said: “We are all very proud of them and think what they have achieved by making this CD is wonderful. I think they are very good and deserve to be successful.” For further information about ‘Faculty’, please contact Laurian Adams at Queens Park - Brent City Learning Centre on 020 8459 8004 or email: laurian@the-clc.org

Super food - Garlic Garlic contains loads of immune boosting properties: Vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, iron, zinc. It also prevents the build up of catarrh. It lowers blood pressure and cholesterol and is a powerful detoxifier. So great is its powers that it was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians; they fed it to slaves building the pyramids to increase their stamina. In ancient Greece it was chewed by Olympian athletes. It is also good for killing bacteria, keeping your heart healthy, warding off coughs and colds. Eat it with parsley to prevent garlic breath. Modern research has confirmed what our ancestors believed; it is one of the most effective antibacterial/antiseptic agents; it stimulates white blood cell production and wipes out a wide range of bacteria, fungi and parasites (possibly even vampires!) During World War II, when penicillin was scarce, garlic was used as an antiseptic to disinfect open wounds and prevent gangrene.
4 steps to a simple salad: • Slice 1kg / 2lb of ripe tomatoes and place on a large plate. • Sprinkle about 4 tablespoons (tbsp) of chopped marjoram over the top. • Mix together 6 tbsp of oil, 2 tbsp of vinegar and 2 chopped cloves of garlic and pour over the tomatoes. • Season with salt and pepper.
Warning: High doses of garlic can exaggerate the effects of anticoagulant and blood pressure lowering drugs.
