Report from the Board Hello and welcome to the August edition of Spotlight. PLEASE advise anyone who is not getting their copy of Spotlight to get in touch with us. South Kilburn NDC puts out its own magazine for residents every month. Spotlight is produced to keep you informed on what is going on in your community and to keep residents up-to-date on what we are doing here at the NDC. We want to ensure that everyone who lives in the area receives their copy and want to hear from anyone who is not getting a handdelivered copy through their letter box. Anyone who is experiencing problems with delivery should contact DISK on 020 7625 2170 or SKNDC 020 7328 9031.
ONCE AGAIN July has been a non-stop month, the sun has been out and the Over 50s festival was a great success. The Youth Festival is also just round the corner, look at page 3 for more information. At the last Board meeting we discussed the future plans for the Income and Employment theme. It was great to hear that so much is planned for the coming months by the new Theme Manager Jennifer Joseph. We will be holding resident forums, so local people can help shape the priorities and work of the theme. If you are interested in employment, training, starting a new business and much more, watch this space! We also took a moment to reflect on the sad news that Peter Cull who founded the South Kilburn Older Peoples Project has passed away, this is a great loss to the whole community. We also paid
our respect to all those who tragically lost their lives in the London bombs of 7th July, a day we will never forget. July’s Board meeting was the last of this Board and it was great to recognise all the work that we have been able to do as a community over the recent years. The Board Elections represent a new phase in South Kilburn, with exciting times ahead! Whatever you do – remember to vote! Have a great summer!
Tanya Samuel South Kilburn NDC Board Chair
The next Board Meeting is at the Community Resource Centre in Albert Road on September 19 at 6pm.
Celebrations: August RAKSHA BANDHAN falls on 19th August, which is
when Hindus celebrate the bonds between brothers and sisters; By tying coloured string on her brother’s wrist the girl shows her love and by accepting it with an open hand her brother extends protection towards her. Another Hindu festival, Sri Janamashtami on 26th is a dedication to Lord Sri Krishna. Iranians celebrate New Year on the 20th with the festival No Ruz. Paryushana-Parva is the holiest time of the year for the Jain faith, during which time they review their faith by meditating, praying and fasting.
This Year’s Notting Hill Carnival will see many South Kilburn residents attend. It takes place on the bank holiday weekend on the 28th and the 29th of August. And last but not least, congratulations to all those who backed the bid for London to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. We won, it’s London! Let the celebrations begin!

Thank you... WE ARE HAPPY to report that in the Neighbourhood
Renewal Unit’s Performance Review of 2004, South Kilburn New Deal for Communities has been rated as excellent. This is a great achievement for all residents, board members, partners, projects and staff involved in South Kilburn New Deal for Communities. The previous years rating was ‘fair’ which shows how far the NDC has improved as a resident led organisation. The Government’s Neighbourhood Renewal Unit is responsible for monitoring New Deal for
Communities programmes nationally using a performance management process. The purpose of performance management is to encourage self assessment and promote a commitment to continuous improvement. It is a true reflection of the great commitment and efforts of all those involved with the NDC. Our current and future plans are to continue to improve on this high standard. Well done and thank you to everybody for your contribution!!

A Festival to Remember THE OVER 50’S FESTIVAL week was launched in
Peel Precinct on Monday 11th July-Friday 15th. A number of special events were held at The Salvation Army and The Marian Centre. The week long festival included the all week International Artists Exhibition by Bertha During, the Big-big luncheon club, the tea dance, and the Health Day. Bertha opened the celebrations with prayers on the first day to bless the festival week. Special guests included The Mayor of Brent Cllr. Colum Maloney and Leader of the Council Cllr. Ann John. The festival gave residents a chance to pay tribute to Peter Cull, and praised him in the
work that he did and the friend that he was. Onlookers were in awe of the entertainment from the Indian dancers, Aisling Band, Akademi, ADANTA dance group and Elders Voice. Some residents came out to dance, and find out what was going on in their area, from the many information stalls present. Awards and gifts were given to winners of the Recycling and the Cleanest Block competitions. Festival goers were treated to traditional West Indian food and drank refreshments provided all day in the gazebo courtesy of Merle’s Diner. It was a truly glorious and memorable festival.

A Tribute THE SAD news of Peter Cull passing away only
days before the opening of the festival was a shock to South Kilburn Older People’s Project members and to those who knew and loved him. Peter had started the S.K.O.P.P and was working with Shane Lawrence, Community
Development Officer on the Over 50’s festival. Shane told Spotlight, “He will be a great loss to the community. I am sure he would have wanted the festival to go ahead and we should make it a celebration of his life”.

Work, rest & play CARERS are a vital source of day to day support such as shopping, cooking, cleaning as well as emotional support. They are the unsung heroes of our community and often need support themselves. South Kilburn carers enjoyed week long events organised by the Making Connections Project for National Carers Week between the 13 – 19th June. The Project supports unpaid carers who live in South Kilburn, caring for a partner, friend or relative
A Helping Hand SOUTH KILBURN NDC is looking at ways to assist our older and disabled residents. One of our ideas is to have a mobile handyperson carrying out minor repair work in your home, like fixing a shelf, rewiring a plug, or changing a light bulb. If this is something that could be of benefit to you or someone you know, please contact Marlene McEachrane, Widening Participation Theme Manager on 020 7372 6061.

with a disability or illness. This years Carers Week theme was “work, rest & play”. With this in mind many carers turned up and enjoyed a few games of bingo and a quiz held at the Salvation Army. A prize of £10 vouchers from Boots was distributed to individual winners. The Project’s day trip to Southend-on-Sea was a great end to the week. The weather was perfect and many of the carers enjoyed the traditional fish and chips & ice cream! If you or anyone you know is affected by disability or chronic illness contact Teresa Kain Carers Support & Development Officer on 020 7625 2531 based at HEALTH Matters, 5 Peel Precinct, South Kilburn. There is also a Carers Support Group that usually meets the third Wednesday of each month 10.30am – 12noon and a drop in session that takes place on a Thursday from 2pm – 5.00pm at the HEALTH Matters shop.

Demonstration Homes THE NAMING of the demonstration homes has been delayed following feedback from the London Fire Brigade. They rejected the 3 favourite suggestions, Albert Court, Willow Court and Bridge Court for reasons of speed/response time in locating addresses of
emergency calls. The Fire Brigade stated that confusion can arise when buildings carry the same name as the street they are located in. A further 19 house name suggestions will be forwarded for review. Look out for further updates in future editions of Spotlight.
Looking Good…and Wanting to Feel Better A Healthy Living Fair was held in South Kilburn on Saturday 4th June. One hundred local residents young and old attended the event, held at the Albert Road Day Centre. The therapist stands gave information and advice, therapy demonstrations, as well as individual treatments and a yoga class. A crèche for mothers with children ran throughout the day. A delicious lunch was provided by Salgoud Catering and raffle prizes given away – among the
prizes were free hour and half-hour treatments and beautiful fruit baskets donated by Grassroots Fruit and Vegetable Co-op. Come along to the therapy sessions on: Thursdays (5-8 pm) and Saturdays (11 am – 2 pm) during term times at the Albert Road Day Centre, located at 5 Albert Road. Kitchen Cupboard Cure for hay fever Hayfever is an allergic reaction to airborne irritants such as pollen. It attacks the sinuses, nose, eyes and mouth. By reducing your intake of mucus forming diary foods you can help reduce the pressure on the sinuses. Vitamin C is an important ingredient in protecting the delicate sinus and nasal tissues – berries, especially strawberries, currents and citrus fruits all have high vitamin C content and can be eaten in abundance. Bathing the eyes in cold teas made from Marigold or Eyebright will cool they eyes down and relieve itchiness. Eyebright can also be taken in capsules as a preventative measure. The natural oils of Chamomile and Melissa are both anti-allergens and Basil oil helps to clear the sinuses: sprinkle 1 drop of each oil on a handkerchief and inhale when necessary. You can also massage these oils on to your upper chest and back to help relieve breathing difficulties. ADULTS TIPS TO YOUNG PEOPLE

Learning with BACES Parents at St. Mary's RC Primary School have been benefiting from a collaboration between BACES and the school to provide childcare training opportunities including work placements. The project is supported by South Kilburn NDC and provides facilities in the school so that parents can join a childcare course delivered by BACES tutors while their children are in school. One of the parents, Kerrin St Omer who has a child aged eight at the school and an elevenweek-old baby, said "This course gives me the experience of working in a school and a stepping stone towards teacher training and it helps me keep my mind active and stimulated". Another parent, Teresa Loaiza who comes from Colombia and has two children in the school, said that after learning about working with children in
the classes, she can now practice with her own children at home. The course has also given her an opportunity to improve her English. We want to let people in South Kilburn know about the exciting range of learning opportunities on offer. Whether you want to improve your employment prospects or develop your skills there is something for you. Students can achieve nationally recognised qualifications, become more independent and progress to other courses. For more information contact BACES Carlton Centre Carlton Vale London NW6 5RA or call 020 7644 9460.

Sometimes all you need is the support to help yourself find a job. Once you have gained employment it can become the initial stepping stone for you to find your life long goal. After searching for work for more than a year and half Phillip Dunkley was still finding it difficult to secure a job.
ADULTS TIPS TO YOUNG PEOPLE
He is now flying high and succeeding in his new job at Costume Jewellery in Willesden as a dispatch worker. And he’s not stopping there; he recently applied to Paddington College to do an NVQ Level 1 and 2 in Information Technology. Phillip has been a resident of South Kilburn for more than twenty years and lives in Austin House. Eight months ago he popped into Recolo which was only a walk away, and was able to receive the right support and advice to gain employment. Phillip says, “I was able to use the phone, do job searching on the internet, type up letters and brush up my CV and have someone look over it for me. I would recommend Recolo to anyone.” If you are unemployed and are looking for work you can come in and see us at 19a Malvern Road, London, NW6 5PS or telephone 0207 372 2828
