Summer may be on it’s way out, but it has still been as busy as ever in South Kilburn, we’ve had the Healthy Living Fair (more information on page 6) and the results of the hotly contested Board Elections (more information on page 3, 4 and 5). On the 18th October we will be holding a who wants to be a millionaire interactive forum. We are looking for your views on all aspects of the work South Kilburn NDC does. The forum runs from 6.30pm – 8.30pm with food and refreshments. Also everyone who attends will receive a £10 high street voucher that can be spent at numerous stores, including Argos, WH SMITH, Boots, Mother Care, HMV and Woolworths to name but a few of the 37 stores. We need to know your views, and look forward to seeing you there.

October is set to be another busy month, and next month you will be able to hear from the new Chair of the NDC Board. We have recently received some useful comments about the NDC website which we really welcome. We are currently reviewing the methods we use to communicate with you all and the points raised will be taken into account.

Jo Merriman, Editor

Celebrations The month of October is a busy month of celebrations. The Hindu religion starts the festival of Navratri; a celebration of worship, dance and music held over a period of nine nights in honour of The Divine Mother.

Black History Month in Britain has been celebrated for a number of years and has grown to over 1400 events. People from black and ethnic minority communities have been promoting their arts and culture.

The Jewish New Year, otherwise known as Rosh Hashanah, is celebrated from sundown on October 3rd to the 13th of October. It is a time of fasting, reflection and prayer.

The celebration of Halloween falls on October 31st.The origins of Halloween date back two centuries ago. The ancient tribes of Celts who lived in this country celebrated the festival Samhain (New Year) on this day with bonfires and wore masks to scare away any evil spirits.

For Muslims the celebration of Ramadan begins and is a holy time when Muslims fast and honour the revelation of the Koran to the prophet Muhammed. This month Nigerians all over the world will be waving the green white green flag for Nigerian Independence Day on the 1st October!

South Kilburn Festival Committee Ltd are organising a Halloween party for under 12’s on 31st October 6-9pm. For more information contact Francis at Disk on 020 7625 2170.

YOUR NEW NDC RESIDENT BOARD MEMBERS PROFILES Awosika, Joseph Thanks for letting me serve you for the past 4 years. We have made progress – however, there is more to be done. I listen and know the needs and hopes of the residents. I serve on the Board, persuading, influencing, negotiating and making decisions with the Council and Partners for improvements, ensuring we make South Kilburn a place where all people are valued, respected and achieve their potential. I serve in Community Careers, helping people into learning and work. Also, as Chair of Neighbourhood Management Group, I work with Residents Champions and Service Providers to increase the performance, quality and delivery of service. I have knowledge, advocacy and leadership skills and experience to continue to persuade and lobby with politicians, Council and Government to change and deliver ‘Value for Money’ services for residents, local businesses and faith groups. Please vote for me and support me to continue to serve you!

Barrett ,Stephanie I have lived in Brent for the past 41 years, my children and grand-children are also born here. I am passionate about my community and the people that live in it. My career as a nurse and care-manager, have given me a wide views of problems and needs of different culture within Brent and surrounding areas of the Borough. I have now been volunteer for the (K.C.A.) Tenants Association for B.M.P Peel Precinct for the past year. I also hold coffee mornings in Allington Road. I have attended training sessions, been to several housing meeting and festivals. I have just passed my Community Representative Course and hope to collect my certificate in August 2005. This election will give me a challenge in helping my community, towards a better future.

Binning, Bryan Our family lived in Albert Road since 1966 so we know the area well. I have been a member of the NDC Board from the beginning and have attended various training courses which have equipped me with the skills to ensure that the choices we make will benefit the whole of the community. We have now reached the halfway stage and some of the goals that have been achieved are the introduction of champions who are on call to deal with local problems and wardens to improve security. The show homes will be ready for occupation in March 2006. I hope you will vote for me as there is still a lot more to do and I feel very passionately that the people of South Kilburn deserve high standards of housing, health and education and that employment opportunities are available for all local people.

Brown, Peter I worked for NDC for two years so I know that housing is a key issue for South Kilburn. We have a ‘masterplan’, but my concerns are: • why create a new South Kilburn if local people can’t afford to live here? • what community facilities will we get? • how will new housing connect with existing areas like the Acorn (where I live)? South Kilburn people are our greatest resource. We must create more training and employment opportunities so that everyone can achieve his or her potential. I will make sure that we have better projects that do this and that work with organisations across London. NDC can only succeed if local people get involved. If elected I will: • publish my telephone number, and • hold regular surgeries. We only have one go at spending NDC money well. With your help I can make sure that we do.

Charman, Pamela My name is Pamela Charman and I bring to you 5 years experience as a Board Member. I came to Kilburn in 1978 as a Warden to the Elderly & after 16 happy years in Malvern Road I retired. My daughter attended Queens Park School and graduated from Kings College Cambridge; she is now a Barrister at Lincolns Inn. I took an access course for one year at Queens Park B.A.C.S. gained a certificate. Whilst there I applied to six Universities getting five offers, I chose Goldsmiths College New Cross. I graduated from there August 1999 in Art History and English Literature. I joined South Kilburn NDC to pay back the community for my grant to study also my daughters’. I should if you vote for me, give of my utmost to continue to serve the community, unstinting of my time in pursuing the goal of a safer, cleaner self aware community, made up of many races, yet acknowledging one another with pride to belong here. We have still more obstacles to surmount, prejudices to cope with, but with faith in ourselves we will triumph never fear.

YOUR NEW NDC RESIDENT BOARD MEMBERS PROFILES Dalsan, Cecilia Hiya, having lived in the area over 19 years I share your concerns, we have all experienced the changes, usually not for the better. Why vote for me? Well foolishly I’ve previously been on the board, and I’m willing to do it all over again. Why? to represent you the community. Why do it, all the meetings etc? Your wants and needs for your area are important. Your children’s’ education, crime, health, increasing employment and most importantly your homes. If elected I will be committed to making this process work, real change for the youth and community. I will be your eyes, ears + mouth, and feed everything back to you the community. I cannot do this without you, so please vote for me. I thank you and wish us all a better South Kilburn. Whether I’m on the board or not.

Peter Jones Communities work best if there are relationships of mutual care and responsibility. We all live together, have many different histories, many shared values, and share many activities. We can disagree and still work together to ensure that our community is united in working for a better future. The new NDC Board needs to reconnect with the community so it can be clearly seen to be working for and on behalf of the best interests of all South Kilburn residents. South Kilburn can be a neighbourhood of choice, so that everyone wants to stay here, and feels proud to live here, and where we provide easy access for our young people to good education and training and job opportunities. Vote for me and I promise as a new Board member to be easily contactable and to meet and report back to you regularly. Its your choice, your responsibility, your future.

Killen, Richard I like living in South Kilburn. I’ve met a lot of good people in the area and I think the place is loaded with opportunities to better the quality of life for its residents. I’d like to bring some of the experiences gained from running my own business into the regeneration that’s starting in South Kilburn. The whole area is going to be changed over the next 10 years and there’s a lot of work to be done to make sure we get what will be best for all the residents. The area needs more than New Homes to become more than just another Housing Estate. It needs community facilities for all as well as places for the young to be themselves. We need to encourage businesses to come here to bring work and wages to the residents. I’d like to represent the interest of all residents on the board.

Knight, Venice When I became a tenant living in the bison block I was shocked at the level of security, it was almost nonexistent and there was a lack of community within the block. I became Chair of Hereford House Tenants Association and I wanted to change the environment we lived in. It has been a struggle but we have achieved some of our goals such as security has improved, cleaner buildings and building community spirit by providing trips and activities. I am also Chair of the South Kilburn Area Housing Board and Granville New Homes Steering group. I am interested in tackling issues that concern residents and I like a challenge. This gives me the incentive and drive to fight for decent homes and a cleaner environment for residents of South Kilburn. It is important to also listen to residents and the people who work on our estate.

Lester, Anthony I have lived in South Kilburn for 6 years 4 of which I have been involved with trying to make sure South Kilburn becomes a better place to live. At present I am chair of the Housing Forum and Vice Chair of the Granville New Homes for the building of 125 new flats which is the start of the Master plan. I also chair the Carers Group and sit on The Delivery Vehicle Group which is responsible for the completion build of the South Kilburn Area. I now feel with this valuable experience I have gained in the past 4 years that I am now ready, to take on a more important role and make a difference to the area by representing the views and concerns of the South Kilburn residents in the exciting time ahead, by the rebuild of our community.

Samuel, Tanya Since 1998 I’ve been involved in South Kilburn’s regeneration; by attending the wrong meeting! From that meeting I got involved to help spread the word. I’ve been chair of the board ever since and have grown and learned much over the years; not to waste opportunities given to make a difference. I firmly believe in this and our NDC. Living here, there are 1000 things to be done better but many things being done right. SKNDC was recently graded excellent. Much of the hard work is finally being recognised. However, SKNDC has yet to meet its full potential and I would love the opportunity to see our work completed. It’d be lovely to walk round our area and see adults I helped as children with a promising future ahead. I am passionate, committed and genuinely care about South Kilburn, so please consider me as a choice when voting. Thank you.

T.C. Ellison, David I want to be the voice of the unheard, the face of the unnoticed. I want to help remind people that South Kilburn is not just about peel precinct or the tower blocks, it is from Kilburn Lane, Oxford Road and up to Wells Court. Changes are happening and I want the old and young to have their concerns voiced and acknowledged and answered. I want the community to know they can make a difference on how things are done. I want to help find solutions to some of their everyday problems, I want the vulnerable to be and feel safe about where they live. I don’t want to just talk about it, I want to do something about it. I have lived here for 32 years it’s time to give something back to my community and that time is NOW.

Security Warden Profile: Bridgette Bridgette Hall Bridgette is a remarkable young woman. She is the supervisor of a team of 5 security wardens working from an office in William Saville House on Denmark Road. Dedicated to her job for over 2 years, she works 6 days a week from 3pm to 3am. A shift as a warden is never ordinary. You never know when the phone will ring or what the call will be about. Everything and anything from problem drug users to a baby trapped in a bathroom. Bridgette understands how tough and lonely life can be living in a modern city, but she displays nothing but charm preferring to take a friendly approach with trouble makers. She says, “Tell them something nice about them or make them laugh”. This is her attitude to defusing aggressive situations. Her enthusiasm is as wide as her smile and she loves knowing that she has made a difference to the safety of those living in South Kilburn. The estate wardens always work in patrols of 2 and carry ID at all times. If you are experiencing anti-social problems in your area you can call the helpline on 020 8451 5050. Running on Sunshine - a first for London in South Kilburn Two pioneering 'noiseless' wind turbines have been installed on the site of the new Granville Plus Children's and Community Centre. The ring around the blades is designed to smooth out vibration, so there is no noise. These are the first of their kind installed in London and will be monitored to see how effective they are. They are designed to generate 1.5kw each of electricity which will be used directly by the Granville Plus building. To get an idea of how much electricity this is, 3kw of electricity would be enough to E N E RGY SAVI N G TI P

run approximately 90 light fittings or 18 computers or 7 fridges! How amazing is that? At Granville Plus there will also be photo-voltaic panels which generate electricity directly from the sun, and solar-thermal panels, where the sun is used to heat the hot water for the building. These photovoltaic panels and small wind turbines are called 'microgenerators'. Ken Livingstone and The Greater London Authority hope that new buildings being built should generate 10% of the energy they use. We hope that the new flats and houses in South Kilburn will be taking up the challenge and incorporating their own renewable energy sources. Anne Thorne Architects Partnership

Auntie’s Kitchen Cures We’ve all been affected by a cold at some point in our lives: fever, runny nose, sneezing, tickly cough, sore throat, muscular aches and pains and generally feeling low and lethargic. They usually last 3-10 days. During that time encourage your body’s natural defenses by taking lots of rest and eating nutritiously. Eat plenty of fresh fruit, raw vegetables and salads. Garlic and onions have powerful antiseptic and decongestant properties. Drink plenty of fluids to replace what you lose through sweating and sneezing; lots of plain water, fruit juice and herbal teas, or hot water with lemon and honey mix. Avoid diary products as they encourage the body’s production of mucus. Take up to 10 x 200mg Echinacea capsules daily for up to 4 days to boost the immune system. Eating pumpkin seeds and shellfish will help boost your zinc levels, which is essential in fighting off illness and helps your body to absorb vitamin C.
