Theglobalnursingshortagehasbecomecritical,withanestimated9millionadditional nursesneededby2030,particularlyinlow-andmiddle-incomecountries.TheCOVID-19 pandemicworsenedthecrisis,asnursesonthefrontlinefacedburnoutandattritiondueto longhoursandchallengingconditions.Challengeslikelowpay,poorworkingconditions, anddiscriminationpersist.However,positivedevelopments,suchastheincreasinguseof technologyforautomationandremotecare,arelighteningnurses'burden.Theemphasis onpatient-centeredcareisalsoenhancingthequalityofcareandimprovingnurses' experiences.

Thenursingprofessioncomprisesover27milliondedicatednursesandmidwives,serving inhospitals,clinics,schools,andhomes.Theircrucialroleindeliveringhealthcareto patientsemphasizestheirsignificantcontributions.Nursingremainsafulfillingcareer, allowingnursestoimpactlivesandinspirehopeforglobalhealthcare.Byaddressing challengesandembracinginnovations,nursingcanplayavitalroleinimprovingglobal healthandwell-being.

Celebrating70YearsofTransformativeContributions totheCommunity

TheUniversityofSanFrancisco’sSchoolofNursingand HealthProfessionshasarichhistoryandacompelling missionthatresonateswithitsimpactontheeducation sectorandsocietyatlarge.Forover70years,wehave beenattheforefrontoftransformativeapproachesand bestpracticestodevelopandpromotehealthandwellbeing.Withasteadfastcommitmenttoeliminatinghealth inequitieslocallyandgloballywhilepreservinghuman dignity,theSONHPhasbecomeabeaconofhopeanda catalystforpositivechange.

TherootsoftheUSFSONHPcanbetracedbackto 1831,whentheVenerableMotherCatherine McAuleyfoundedtheSistersofMercyinDublin, Ireland.TheSistersofMercydedicatedthemselvesto servingthepoorandneedyresidentsoftheircity Unlikeotherreligiousordersatthetime,theypursued amissionthatextendedbeyondthewallsofacloister, reachingouttoworkbroadlythroughoutthecity, providingaidtothehungryandcaringforthesick.

In1854,theSistersofMercybroughttheirmissionto providehealthcareandeducationtoSanFrancisco.It wasinthisvibrantcitythatthenursingprogramatthe UniversityofSanFranciscowasestablishedin1948in collaborationwiththeSistersofMercy.Theprogram wasdesignedtoallowregisterednursesfromnearby

St.Mary’sHospitaltoearntheirbaccalaureatedegrees. Recognizingtheneedforindependentgrowth,thenursing programbecameanautonomousdepartmentatthe UniversityofSanFranciscoin1954.

SONHPachievedasignificantmilestonein1958whenit becamethefirstprivatenursingprograminCaliforniato receiveaccreditationfromtheNationalLeagueforNursing. Thisaccreditationhasbeenmaintainedcontinuouslyfor over50years,servingasatestamenttotheschool’s unwaveringcommitmenttoexcellence.Furthermore,the baccalaureatedegreeprograminnursing,themaster’s degreeprograminnursing,andtheDoctorofNursing PracticeprogramattheUSFSONHPhavereceived accreditationfromtheCommissiononCollegiateNursing Education,highlightingtheschool’sdedicationto upholdingrigorousacademicstandards.

SONHP'simpactextendsbeyondtherealmofeducation.It isapprovedbytheCaliforniaStateBoardofRegistered Nursing,anditsgraduatesareeligibletoreceivethe CaliforniaPublicHealthNursingCertificate.This

theBayArea.Sinceitsinception,thenursing schoolhasexpandeditsprogramofferingsand studentbody,solidifyingitspresenceinthe field.

In1984,theMasterofScienceinNursing degreewasintroduced,followedbythe additionoftheClinicalNurseLeader certificationtoitsmaster’sprogramsin2005. Recognizingtheneedforhighlyskilled nursingprofessionals,theschoolbecamethe firstinstitutioninCaliforniatoofferthe DoctorofNursingPracticedegreein2007, cateringtoworkingnursesseekingadvanced education.

Toaddressbroaderhealthconcerns,SONHP addedtheMasterofPublicHealthprogramin 2011andestablishedtheDoctorof Psychology(PsyDinClinicalPsychology) degreeprogramin2013.Keepingupwiththe advancementsinhealthcaretechnology,the MasterofHealthInformatics(MSinDigital HealthInformatics)programwaslaunchedin 2016.

Whatsetstheseprogramsapartisthecore valueof“CuraPersonalis”—careforthe wholeperson—whichstemsfromthe

DeanEileenFry-Bowers,adistinguishedprofessional withover20yearsofexperienceinclinicalnursing,has broughtherexceptionalexpertiseandleadershiptothe USFSchoolofNursingandHealthProfessionssince joiningin2022.Herremarkablebackgroundencompasses clinicalnursingpractice,leadershiproles,andacademic positionsinnursing,publichealth,andmedicine,aswell

asserviceintheesteemedUnitedStatesNavyNurse Corps.Notably,shehasacomprehensiveeducationin lawandhealthpolicy,furtherenhancinghermultifaceted approachtonursing.

DaliawasbornandraisedinEgypt,nearthegreat pyramids.Herfatherurgedherto“daretodream”asshe wasgrowingup.Itallstartedduringherfreshmanyearof collegewhenshewasawardedaSumaCumLaudemerit scholarship,changedhermajortobusinessadministration, andfellinlovewithliberaleducation.Dalialandedher dreamjobwhenshewashiredbytheU.S.Departmentof CommerceattheU.S.EmbassyinCairo,Egypt,allowing hertoworkinEgyptandtheU.S.,capturingandenjoying thebestofbothworlds.Shedidthatwhilealsoenrolledin anMBAprograminEdinburgh,Scotland,andwasraising herthreekids.Shelaughinglysaysthatsheearnedher MBAonaplane,becauseherfrequent36hours-flights (withmultiplestops)fromCairotoWashington,D.C.was herqualitytimetogothroughgraduateschooldespiteher busylife.WhensheearnedherMBA,shegearedupforher

Ph.D.,andgraduatedwithaPhDinOrganizational Psychology

Daliafeltthateducationwasthequickestroutetofulfillher dreams.Withthatresolve,shedevelopedintoalifelong studentaswellasaprofessionaldreamer.Shebelievesthat dreamsdonotcometruebycoincidence.Dreamsarethere toremindyouofwhatGeorgeElliottoncesaid,“it’snever toolatetobewhoyoumighthavebeen!”.Shealso understoodthatthebestformofpreparationistokeep learningandpreparingyourselftobereadyforevery opportunitycomingyourway Themagicalmomentofluck happensonlywhenopportunitymeetspreparedness.Dalia hasbeenapplyingtheselessonssinceshegraduatedfrom highschoolanduntilshewasonboardedasanExecutive DeanatLoneStarCollege,beingafearlessnewimmigrant.
