StudentsenteringHTLAencountertheuniqueprojectbasedcollaborativelearningmodel,thecoreofthe school’scurriculumdesign.Atfirstglance,HTLA’s curriculumseemsstraightforwardandtraditional.The graduationrequirementsalignwiththeUCandCSU schools’entryrequirements,necessitatingstudentsto completefouryearsofEnglish,socialstudies,math,and science.However,thedeliverymethodofthis curriculumisfarfromtraditional.Studentsoftenlearn bydoing.Theyworkingroupstocompleteprojectsthat havereal-worldapplications.

OnatypicaldayatHTLA,youmightseeagroupof freshmentryingtocreateanexhibit.Thisexhibit highlightstheprosandconsofatechnologicaladvance. Simultaneously,youmightseesophomorescollaborating onan“ofrenda”fortheirDiadelosMuertosproject. Theysharetheirbackgrounds,interests,andfamily storiesduringthisproject.Theremightbeagroupof juniorscreatingadocumentaryfortheirUShistoryclass whileinthebackyard,agroupofseniorsareprototyping rocketmodelsinAdvancedPhysics.
