Message from the editors Senior year is an important milestone that culminates 12 years of education. This year, we didn’t get many of the usual celebrations. That’s why we volunteered to create this magazine. We want to honor and appreciate the time we spent together at Huron. We’re indebted to Huron’s administration for their support and Ms. Badalamente, Mishal Charania and Maya Kogulan for their help. Class of 2020, the best is yet to come!

Describe high school in one word?
“I was the goalie for water polo. I don’t remember getting hit in the head, but it apparently happened.” - Nicholas Kaipainen
Remember when?
“Yes, I was that girl walking around in an Earth costume during finals week. Why? Ask me about John Rawls’ Theory of Justice.” - Karli Messer “Sophomore year, I had my painting ‘Dread’ (done in Mr. Smigell’s open studio class that fall) submitted to a few different art shows, and won lots of prizes. It was even featured on the cover of Full Circle Magazine that year. This is something i am very proud of and totally would not have achieved without the awesome art teachers at Huron.” Lillian Dowds

Kudos to you if you get the pun in our team name (A La Descartes) this year. Lots of thoughtful yet passionate discussions took place here. Thanks, team members, for your respectful disagreements this year, which did a lot to sharpen my brain cells.”

Blanca Rodriguez-Cerda: “I took pictures for yearbook of the homecoming court. It’s one of my favorite memories at Huron because I saw people taking pictures on the field [my freshman year]. I thought that was so cool because I was so into photography and wished someday I could be the one taking the pictures. [When] I did, that was so cool!”
Robert Ash
Kathryn Bellows
Mr. Gottliebsen: “I asked a friend to prom on top of a bell tower in Venice...and was turned down. Thought that was the worst moment of my life at the time. Life is significantly bigger than I thought. Also, a quote I gave to my senior yearbook: ‘it’s ok to be different, because no one is normal.’ Man I was deep.” Ms. Bellows: “On the way home from a track meet, I was eating an apple and my friend Jamie made me laugh... Well, I’m sure you’ve heard about when you laugh and you’re drinking something - that liquid comes out of your nose... Yeah.... it’s like that, but with apple... It was crazy painful, but hilarious at the same time.” Ms. Wu: “The most exciting moment during senior year for me was receiving the college admission letter from Zhejiang University (which is the top 3 university in China).” Ms. Roberts: “[I was] on top of a mountain in California attending an arts camp called Idyllwild. It was the summer before my senior year, and it was my first time traveling on my own!”
Jeremy Schuitm an
Mr. DeMoss: “This is a picture of me (Hotsauce DeMoss - self-given nickname that surprisingly never stuck with my classmates) before my senior prom. List of things in the picture: one authentic cowboy hat, one guy who thought he was super cool, zero dates.”
da RaShon on Jamers Ms. Gordon: “I had a golf tournament [the last day of school for seniors]. I showed up the next day to say ‘goodbye’ to my teachers, and they told me I wasn’t allowed in the building! I missed my chance to say ‘goodbye.’”
When I was a SENIOR... Ms. Potocki: “Salem High School Class of 2003. Everything that I remember from senior year involves some kind of connections made with others: connections with my photography and math teachers, connections with my coaches, connections with my friends. Those relationships were the foundation of all of my memories! Most important memory was meeting my husband!”
Ethan Konett
Ms. VanRiper: “My friends and I used to call the school, pretending to be each other’s parents’ so we could leave school early to go to Olive Garden for cheap soup, salad and breadsticks.” Ms. Wroblewski: “I played clarinet in my high school marching band, and my senior year I had a solo in our show. We placed 7th at Grand Nationals!” Ms. Colby: “The beginnings of the fall of communism in the spring of my senior year opened my eyes to a world beyond my small town. What a revelation that was for me. You are SO lucky to be part of a global community.” Ms. Wissman: “My family had moved from West Virginia to Oklahoma in the middle of my junior year so I didn’t know too many people my senior year, but I am still friends with two of the people I met then, and they will be my friends for life.”
Mr. Behmer: “My senior year was much like what today’s students experience: playing in football games, pep rallies, track meets and good friends, many of whom were important at the time and helped me understand a bit more about my self.”
Dear Graduating Class of 2020: Congratulations on your graduation today. During these last few months, you have demonstrated great strength and resilience. If there ever is a class that can change the world, it is the class of 2020! We can’t wait to see what you do next. Continue to make us proud. You will always be part of the Huron River Rat family.
Sincerely, Huron administration
