GETTING IN SHAPE IS EASY WITH 2062’S UNIQUE C A M M E R AY T R A I N I N G P R O G R A M .

ll you need to prise yourself off the sofa and get fit is a plan and a little motivation – and 2062 is here to offer you both. We have teamed up with Graham Hyland from Health+Fitness Studio to put together an easy-to-follow, suburb-wide circuit that will put you on the right track. The program makes the most of stairs, community gym equipment and even the pavement to ensure you can enjoy the great outdoors and glorious summer sunshine as you work up a sweat. You can start anywhere on the route and do as much or as little as you like (just don’t tell Graham we said that), but the idea is to gradually build to the full circuit. It might seem hard at first, but once you’ve got going you’ll

8

shock yourself with what you can achieve.

Station 1 The Tunks Valley Situated at Cammeray’s most picturesque park, this offers a seriously testing set of stairs. They can be found on the Tunks Park side where The Boulevarde meets Rowlison Parade and with more than 150 stairs in each set, you are guaranteed to get fit and finish with jelly legs! Warm up with a light jog beforehand.

Station 2 Tunks jungle gym Between the oval and car park, this terrific training spot has been well used for years. Great for chin-ups but if you can’t do that jump up to grab the bar and then try to control your descent for 3 seconds.

Station 3 Pine Street stairs Step up your fitness around the corner from Tunks by striding up the stairs to complete a range of exercises.

Station 4 Green Park gym Jog to the outdoor gym in Green Park on Cammeray Road to make the most of the available equipment.

Station 5 Health+Fitness Studio Now book in for the toughest workout – Health+Fitness Studio’s 30-minute interval session for $30. Finally, cool down with a walk along Miller Street for 5-10 minutes – and grab a much-needed coffee (or perhaps a protein shake) and a bite to eat.

ow times have changed for us all. During the boom times a price increase during a sales campaign seemed common place along with some expressions of under quoting from buyers, but in the current market it is price reductions that have taken centre stage with some vendors feeling they may have been misled on price by their chosen agent. A lot of buyers seem to be happy to just sit on the sidelines and pass on blatant “good buys” due to the paralysing fear of a continuing decline in property values. To me, this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. As an agent, having the additional interest of one or two more buyers can have a significant impact on the sales result. So when qualified and well-suited buyers are unwilling to act, agents are left hunting for additional potential purchasers generally by way of an improved value proposition, i.e. a price reduction. After the property sells, buyers then benchmark that sale price for future properties they are considering and the cycle

continues, which has mostly been the case for 2018. Cammeray’s auction clearance rate has trended downward throughout the year, in line with the Sydney market, but it is still generally 10 per cent to 15 per cent higher than other parts of the city. Moving into 2019, I anticipate a continuation of mixed sales results but that overall prices will stabilise in the latter half of the year. The number of properties coming to market in Cammeray and the lower north shore is still in decline. This might not appear to be the case but properties are generally spending more days on the market before selling so it may seem like greater numbers of homes are up for grabs. Whether you choose to spectate in the next 12 months or jump in and commit to selling or buying, I’m more than happy to assist with up-to-date market insights and genuine advice to assist with your decisions. A talk with

..........

Trevor Richardson 2062: You have been living in Australia now for just over 11 years, what do you miss about Ireland? TR: Family, friends and a good pint of Guinness.

my beautiful wife Rebecca in Manly in 2007 and haven’t looked back. She is the kindest person I know.

A little birdie told me you once played for Ireland in a Rugby World Cup... Yes, it was the U21 World Cup in Argentina. It was the experience of a lifetime and I got to play with players like Johnny Sexton and Stephen Ferris, who have had amazing professional careers.

As you work Saturdays, what day do you take off and what do you get up to? I only take Sundays off, so I get up pretty early, go for a run and meet the family at Maggio’s for breakfast. This is followed by a family bush walk somewhere on the lower north shore and whatever the rest of the day brings us. It’s an important family day.

What do you love about living in Sydney? The great weather is up there. The Aussie lifestyle is a big one, the fitness culture, cafe culture, beaches, parks and bringing up your kids where outdoor activities are so accessible.

You have been teaching ethics at Cammeray Public School for two years, tell us about your experience... It’s great. I have a class of just over 20 kids and helping them discuss different ethical topics is something I really enjoy.

Tell us about your family? I have two boys, Reeve and Eli. Reeve will soon be finishing his first year at Cammeray Public School and Eli will follow in 2021. I met

You raised money for Cancer Council this year, tell us about it... What an experience. I had friends, family, past and current clients, and Cammeray

residents I’d never met before donate. I was humbled and with their help I raised over $17,000 while also getting up on the stage at Norths in front of 400 people to do a silly dance. I’d happily do it again. What else would you like to be involved in within the community here? I’d genuinely like to be involved in anything that will have a positive impact. What do you love most about real estate work? Every day is different. There’s always a new challenge, someone new to meet, someone to help – but what I love most is aiming to add value in everything I do. You have been Rate My Agent’s No.1 agent in Cammeray for the past three years, how do you think your personal values have helped you with this? Being honest and trustworthy are the two most important values – they are the backbone of my business.

I live in Hong Kong and seldom go to Sydney. I needed an agent I could trust without question. Trevor Richardson worked with me on both management and sales for seven years. he south coast of NSW is well known for its wonderful beaches, but the serene surrounding countryside can be just as spellbinding, with its lush, green landscapes, abundant wildlife and calming atmosphere. Situated a little under three hours south of Sydney – and just 10 minutes from the magnificent Hyams Beach – in beautiful Jervis Bay, The Woods Farm is the perfect place to unwind. Located on 40 acres of tranquil bushland, there are eight well-appointed cottages as well as glamping options in which to stay, and whatever you choose you will not be disappointed. Each of the wonderfully furnished cottages has three bedrooms and its own unique country theme. We stayed in the Birdhouse, which is at the far end of the property next to the paddocks and an open stretch of land, which gave us plenty of chances to check out the local wildlife. From the outset it is clear that great thought and effort has been put into every element of the farm. As you make your way down the track into the property you pass the large fully equipped glamping tents and come across an old-fashioned truck welcoming you. Further along there are large wooden signs clearly depicting the name of each cottage upon the backs of which are painted lines from Dorothea Mackellar’s evocative poem My Country, adding another layer of Australiana. Each of the cottages has a stencil painted on the outside of the building to show the name of the cottage in which you are staying – for

example a hen for the Henhouse – offering a stylish and striking prelude for what’s to come. Inside everything has a slightly rustic yet stylish feel, with flourishes that show the great care and attention that has been put into the look and feel of the decor. From the hand-picked artworks on the walls, to the eye-catching adornments – such as the delicate bird cages and vintage objet d’art, and the luxurious bathroom that would not look out of place in the classiest of five-star hotels – nothing has been overlooked. This also applies to the sumptuous toiletries and beautiful perfumes on offer for guests to use. Outside there is a striking black and white striped porch, large outdoor dining table, comfortable furniture, a hammock and a fire pit all overlooking the bush, a vintage fire truck and the many animals. It is a wonderful spot to sit back and drink in the atmosphere. At dusk – probably with a glass of something nice in hand – you are likely to see curious kangaroos hopping a short distance from you, checking out who has turned up now. They bound across the property regularly, providing another quintessential country touch for city visitors. Of course, the experience would not be complete without the more traditional farm animals, and there are lots of opportunities to get up close and personal with them here as you indulge your inner farmer, safe in the knowledge that all the hard work is being done by someone else. At The Woods Farm there is plenty of space to roam and the peacocks on site certainly

make the most of it. Our girls, aged one and three, were mesmerised as the vibrantly coloured birds continually popped up no matter where we were – by the pool, on a bush walk, or perched next to the sturdy outdoor dining table. But the thing the children were most excited about was patting and feeding the other animals by hand every morning and evening. There are goats, cows, alpacas – with names such as James and Kerry Paca – a horse and mini-horses in the paddocks on the property and their familiar sounds can be heard throughout the day. There are also chickens to feed and they return the favour by providing eggs that every guest is welcome to collect and cook. There is plenty more to keep you occupied without leaving the farm. Next to the chicken coop is an extensive potager, or herb garden, behind some beautiful wrought iron gates. Within you will find everything you need to add the finishing touches to a beautiful meal and there are also long tables as well as chairs for you to relax in if you simply want to take a load off and enjoy the tranquility. For those who want to stretch their legs and minds, or who – like us – have energy-filled kids to entertain, there are a range of options available. Next to the potager is a children’s playground, complete with sandpit and row boat and even a tiny synthetic grass football pitch. And while the youngsters run themselves to a standstill there are some garden games for the big kids, with a giant chess board, Jenga, a bocce court and skittles all on hand. Alongside this, safely fenced off, are the swimming pool and sun beds – showing it’s

definitely not all hard work on the farm – and behind is a great little bar and seating area that can be used by guests and is perfect for a party. The Woods Farm makes for a wonderful wedding or party venue and you can hire out the entire site for a special occasion. It has a total of 40 acres to explore, with bikes provided to help you seek out large parts of it as well as the surrounding area, and there are a number of walks to take on. Adding a little more mystery to the enchanting atmosphere is the “Secret Woods Walk”, which has been cut through the bush. Pointed along the way by signs featuring some inspirational and quirky quotes from the likes of Maya Angelou, you meander along, weaving your way through the tall grass and trees until you find the craft caravan hidden away on the path. There the kids can go wild with paints, brushes and pens – and add to the intriguing collection of messages and marks made by those who have previously found their way here. Dragging yourself away can be almost impossible but the stunning Hyams Beach is a must-see. Just a 10-minute drive away, its pristine white sand and crystal clear aqua water are another reminder of why you don’t have to stray too far from home to find paradise. If you want to enjoy all the fun of the farm and also savour one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, The Woods Farm is the perfect place to stay.

The thing the children were most excited about was patting & feeding the animals by hand every morning.

s the weather heats up, there’s nothing better than a cool, creative cocktail to take the edge off the day – and gin is perfect if you are looking for a little kick. The botanical-based drink is one of Australia’s fastest growing spirits and to harness the best of its unique flavour 2062 has a couple of recipes to show there’s more to it than just adding tonic (though that is always refreshingly delicious). Using fresh fruit, bitters, ginger beer and rose water, these lip-smackingly delicious cocktails will hit the spot for summer. And if gin is not for you, simply leave the alcohol out for fizzy, and equally fantastic, mocktails.

ammeray is blessed to have many wonderful cafes, but there’s one in particular that has established itself as a much-loved local institution. Maggio’s has been serving delicious food and coffee to customers for 20 years, with top politicians, sportsmen and celebrities rubbing shoulders with locals. It now has a cafe and bakery situated in the heart of Cammeray on the north shore, but has its roots in Calabria, southern Italy. “My father came when he was 16 and my mother was born here from Italian migrants who came in the 1960s,” says Christian Maggio, who runs the business alongside his brothers Carlo and Andrew. Carlo and Andrew threw open the doors to the first cafe on Miller Street in 1998 after getting a tip from another local favourite. “The area we were raised in was Ryde, we were very fortunate that our close friend Katia from Studio 500 hairdresser told us about a cafe that was for sale,” Christian says. “So with Carlo, Andrew and our close friend Roy, who still works for us in the bakery, at the front of house, and Mum in the kitchen we opened. Dad and myself worked on the weekend.” And though Maggio’s is renowned as a family business, it’s not something Christian had originally planned on joining full time. “No never, we all started in 1998. I was still in school, and Carlo and Andrew had experience working at the casino and hotels,” he says. “It was never my intention to work in the family business, but the energy working in the cafe beats any job at a bank where I was heading in my studies.” From the very beginning the cafe built an enviable reputation, and has proved popular with some famous faces, including former prime minister Tony Abbott among others.

“(There have been) footballers, musicians, actors but the most regular would be former Wallabies captain Phil Waugh. He had a pre-game ritual of eating two big plates of pasta before each Waratahs match,” Christian says. “Ray Martin is also a favourite – some of the stories we talk about are brilliant.” Most of all the cafe is known for its delightful home-style food, from breakfast favourites such as the Cammeray Starter – fresh tomato, smashed avocado, feta and poached eggs – to a range of panini and, Waugh’s favourite, pasta. There is rarely a day it isn’t packed, with customers at the outside tables spilling onto the lane to soak up some sun. The past couple of years have seen some big changes at Maggio’s, with the cafe moving across the lane and the opening of its delectable bakery in 2016. If anything the shift in premises has helped further increase the cafe’s popularity and the bakery – with its range of beautiful pastries, artisanal breads, Italian delicacies such as the decadent custard-filled bombolini and specially made cakes for every occasion – has proved a huge success. “It is an amazing feeling being part of customers’ big celebrations, weddings or birthdays. You feel pressure to make sure the cake is as memorable as the occasion,” Christian says. But it’s not just the business that has altered over the years, as he points out: “The area has changed massively. There has been such a big shift from an elderly population in Cammeray, to a place full of young, positive families.” And it seems the recent changes at Maggio’s are unlikely to be the last. “Be prepared for something exciting both in Cammeray and on the north shore,” Christian says.“Stay tuned!” Maggio’s cafe is at 457 Miller Street and the bakery is at 463 Miller Street; www.maggios.com.au.

The Watershed Bar & Grill will soon

become the latest addition to Cammeray’s flourishing restaurant scene. Aiming to make the most of Sydney’s wonderful selection of seafood when it opens this summer, the Watershed’s focus is on healthy, sustainable food that you crave – along with a few naughty treats. There is nothing better than beautifully prepared, fresh seafood and until now it is something that has been sadly lacking in the area. That will soon be remedied when the Watershed throws open its doors. The dishes will be as multicultural as the clientele, with everything from Hawaiian poke bowls to fish tacos, and with growing concerns about overfishing and the devastating effect this could have on our oceans, sustainable seafood is always the catch of the day. From the tempting fish and chips and delectable seafood platters to the simply irresistible fish burger with chorizo aioli and the more familiar prawn cocktail, which is the chef’s personal favourite, the menu is filled with mouth-watering dishes that are sure to have you coming back for more. Situated in the popular Stockland development, the restaurant’s interior will evoke the sensations of the coast, with

the blues of the ocean, timber and even knotted ropes associated with sailing all making an appearance. The Watershed – fully licensed and with BYO wine options available – will also make the most of its prime location in Cammeray, with outdoor seating meaning you can relax and enjoy your meal while the children run and play. With lunch and dinner on offer every day of the week, you’ll never be short of dining options or delicious seafood. And if you can’t eat in, the full menu is available to take away after placing your order over the phone or online with Deliveroo and Menulog. The restaurant is affiliated with fellow Cammeray Square-based eatery Noodle & Stock and shares the same absolute commitment to excellent cuisine and exemplary customer service. If you’re craving kingfish, fancy tucking into some tasty salmon tataki or in need of some delectable John Dory, the Watershed will reel you in.

The menu is filled with mouth-watering dishes, such as the irresistible fish burger with chorizo aioli, that are sure to have you coming back for more.
