eekeeping is not something you necessarily associate with the big city but The Urban Beehive is looking to change that one hive at a time. Bees are under threat due to a combination of factors, including urbanisation and over-use of insecticide – not to mention anyone who has ever been stung. So The Urban Beehive was started in 2010 by Doug Purdie (pictured left) and Vicky Brown with the aim of helping protect the local bee population against major problems that have left the insects internationally in drastic decline. Two major killers have proved devastating to bees worldwide – the varroa destructor parasite and colony collapse disorder – but fortunately Australia has so far managed to avoid these scourges. However, The Urban Beehive wants to raise awareness about these potentially disastrous issues, boost natural pollination and help maintain the genetic diversity of Australia’s honeybees before it’s too late. It has put hives in city backyards, businesses, community gardens and on rooftops from Manly to Marrickville, using any and every suitable space. “We’ve got hives in all sorts of unusual locations,” Doug, who has been a beekeeper since 2008, says. “They’re at the Shangri-La hotel, the Botanic Gardens and Centennial Parklands, we even have hives at the airport for Qantas.” The Urban Beehive has gone from strength to strength over the years, with more and more people taking an interest. As well as placing hives in a variety of urban
settings, the group offers courses for wannabe beekeepers who want to learn some of the finer points of honey production and they have proved a big hit. “It’s growing at a huge rate, we manage around 100 hives, teach beekeeping courses in Centennial Park and now have a beekeeping supplies store (in Mascot),” Doug says. “The courses and store have helped many more people become beekeepers.” Doug, who also maintains a blog called The Beevangelist and has written best-selling books on the art of beekeeping, says that the stripy insects do some critically important work in the environment that is often overlooked. “We have had feedback from backyard gardeners who have had fantastic crops of fruit and vegies once we moved a hive there, where before they have struggled,” he says. And it seems each different area offers honey with a slightly different taste. “Every harvest tastes different, because there are different things flowering in urban Sydney all the time the honey tastes different from month to month,” Doug says. The honey produced by The Urban Beehive is sold on its website and at a range of shops and cafes across Sydney, such as The Alchemist Espresso on Carter St. “Our honey can be found all over the place, from little boutique eateries to IGA stores and Bourke Street Bakeries,” Doug says.
“We’ve got hives in all sorts of unusual locations ... we even have hives at the airport for Qantas.”

S
o far this year the property market in Cammeray has continued its rise after an amazing 2016 of many street and suburb records. The number of homes sold in the first quarter of 2017 was similar to that in the same quarter of last year, hinting at the fact we are looking at the “new norm” for property turnover in the suburb being around 0.5 per cent. This equates to an average of 10 properties being sold in Cammeray each month. As we progress into the latter half of the year, I anticipate capital growth for apartments and houses to slow down from the previous years of 15-20 per cent. However, I don’t expect the “levelling off” or “slight drop” in home prices that some commentators are tipping. Such predictions are made in relation to general markets and not specific suburbs. Cammeray is a very resilient area due to its geographical position, amenities and variety in property types, so my expectations are that home prices will continue to rise here – albeit in a more reasonable fashion. I feel Cammeray as a suburb is forever improving and will only become more

attractive to prospective renters and buyers alike in the future. There are still opportunities for commercial/residential blocks on the main strip to be redeveloped and upgraded, further enhancing the suburb’s appeal with new shops and restaurants. One of the oldest buildings on the Lower North Shore, “Tarella” on Amherst Street, is opening its doors as an early learning centre after lying neglected and vacant for years while the new Anzac Public School is growing in numbers each year and is expected to peak at around 1,000 pupils in three to four years’ time. All of the above will ensure Cammeray stays high up on the list of the most desirable suburbs to live in.
T R E VO R ’ S TO P 5 TIPS FOR BUYERS
1
A bad strata report or building and pest inspection doesn’t necessarily mean you should run for the hills. Such reports scare off your average punter when in reality the issue may not be as bad as it reads. This means a savvy buyer could pick up a diamond in the rough at a reasonable price. If you require finance in order to buy, have your pre-approval organised

early on as you risk missing out on the perfect property if you leave it too late. If a buyer can’t get their finance organised in time for an auction it can be very frustrating for them. Gain an understanding of the legalities on price guides. This will turn a novice buyer into a seasoned professional as it gives you a rough idea on the pricing strategy of the selling agent and helps you better position your offer on a property if you choose to make one. If possible, buy from outof-area agents. You could snap up a property for less than its full potential due to the selling agent not knowing local buyers or lacking in “hyper local knowledge” of the market/area they are selling in. If buying at auction, come equipped with a bidding strategy. You have the power to influence other bidders on the auction floor based on how you bid. Consider how your bids will be perceived by the other buyers and send the message you want them to receive.

TESTIMONIAL / Trevor is really an amazing real estate agent and the best we have worked with over the last 15 years. (Prior to deciding on using Trevor for our sale, we looked at 4-5 other agents in the local area.) He is completely professional, trustworthy, thorough, dedicated and an expert in his field. Nothing was ever too difficult and the whole process was completely stress-free. I have to say our interaction with him was absolutely faultless. In particular, his advice about the sales and marketing strategy to take, and his approach to the property and the buyers was absolutely spot-on. It feels like everyone has got a good outcome from this sale and we are incredibly happy. Trevor is a real estate agent who, over his career, will help positively redefine the common perception of this industry.

TESTIMONIAL / Never trust an agent – that’s what many people say. But I am delighted to say that we found an exception in Trevor Richardson. Trevor was very measured in his approach to our campaign and managed our expectations very realistically. He communicated on a very regular basis and worked hard to follow up on all leads. He took time to get to know the potential buyers and their motivations, and was very honest in his dealings. He told us “warts and all” the pluses and minuses of the property and his in-depth local knowledge was invaluable. We were impressed with his integrity and professionalism. We can’t recommend Trevor highly enough!

The Spit to Manly .......... BY Melissa Price
20
/ WINTER WALKS
T
he winter months are a great time to make the most of the amazing coastline we are so lucky to have on our doorsteps. There are countless walks and tracks to tackle but among the best is the 10k “Spit to Manly”. 2062 has lined up a full day’s adventure for you to enjoy that takes in a little bit of everything: exercise, great coffee, delicious food, boutique shopping stops and a lazy afternoon on the sand (weather permitting of course). Ending with a few cheeky wines and dinner, before heading home for a well-deserved rest, it’s a perfect Sydney Sunday. The full Spit to Manly walk takes around 3-4 hours, meandering through relatively untouched bushland. However, it can be accessed at a number of different points, allowing you to tackle it in stages. It is filled with an abundance of native plants and animals, Aboriginal sites, hidden secluded harbour beaches and pockets of sub-tropical rainforest. You’re bound to see numerous species of birds and the area is known for its fairy penguins, so if you listen intently you may even hear one honking. Eastern water dragons, brush and ring-tailed possums, and long-nosed bandicoots are familiar faces along the way and if you look carefully echidnas can also be spotted. The original inhabitants of the area were the Cammeraygal clan. Living in harmony with their environment they left only a small amount of evidence of their many thousands of years of occupation, with rock carvings, burial sites and middens still on the route. The only way to begin is with breakfast at the gorgeous Chiosco by Ormeggio, situated on the jetty at D’albora Marinas The Spit, with its sumptuous Italian food and, most importantly for this time of day, great coffee.
After loading up on caffeine make your way across the bridge to the official starting point at Ellery’s Punt Reserve, where the old punt built in the 1850s connected Manly to The Spit. This was used to transport everything, including the tram, and the walk’s route follows the old tram route towards Fisher Bay. At the end of the old tramline, after a short walk along the coast, is Clontarf Beach, complete with its beautiful white sands, enclosed harbour pool and vast picnic area. It’s probably wise to make the most of the facilities here as the next ones are quite a way away beyond Reef Beach (unless you take a detour to Tania Park). The path follows the shoreline all the way to Castle Rock and it’s along this section that some of the most picturesque little pockets of beach can be found. The route cuts a swathe though the national park and while this is undoubtedly the toughest stretch, the magnificent views down to the water ensure it is well worth it. There are a lot of stairs to tackle on the way to Reef Beach but the pretty bushland paths and stunning vistas more than make up for any huffing and puffing, and for the hardy there is a detour down to Grotto Point to survey the ocean below. Reef Beach is the perfect place for a little pit stop and relaxing dip. Nestled at Dobroyd Head, it is a place of significant importance to indigenous Australians and a place where rock carvings can be sought out at low tide. From here the track winds around to Forty Baskets Beach and another enclosed ocean pool, before heading past Wellings Reserve, and by now it is time for a well-earned break. So take a load off at Forty Beans Cafe, located at the edge of North Harbour Reserve, a friendly little cafe with delicious cakes baked in-house daily. The path continues around the coastline

through Fairlight and its charming strip of sand, and the great news is that after the early slog it’s all downhill from here. The end is soon in sight as you see the famous Manly ferries making their way into the harbour while you wander along the seafront. You are spoiled for lunch choices in Manly, but if you make your way down the Corso and out towards the beach Hemingway’s is a real treat. Owned by Sonia Piantoni and Emmanuel Deleuze, who moved to Sydney from the French Alps, where they own Michelin-starred Le Montana, it combines local favourites with traditional French cuisine. Those who are familiar with the area will know the best shopping is hidden away off the Corso and a journey down Rialto Lane will take you to stylish boutiques Mr & Mrs Smith and Mclean & Page. After a spot of retail therapy, another
stunning seaside stroll will take you to Shelly Beach which, being west-facing, catches the afternoon sun. Enjoy a nap after all your exertions or drop into The Boathouse next door for a little pick-me-up. And following a little rest what’s better than a cheeky twilight vino? Manly Wine, set just behind Manly Beach, is a fantastic choice – a chic all-day cafe, restaurant and wine bar with a relaxed atmosphere. A celebration of wine, fresh seafood and the Aussie beach lifestyle, its inspired daily specials, such as Tuesday’s Sexy Sashimi Date Night and Crab Shack Sunday, will entice you to stay for dinner. The perfect way to end a perfect day. We’ve put together a map detailing the walk and where to find all of the wonderful places mentioned. Download it from www.theend. com.au/thewalk.pdf.

A SNEAK PEEK INSIDE THE COVERS OF THE INSPIRED NEW COOK BOOK FROM ABOUT LIFE.
/ TASTY TREATS
A
s winter draws in we all need some warming, comforting food as we wait for the summer sun to return. These days there is no excuse to gorge on anything stodgy or fatty, with a wide variety of mouth-watering healthy options available. About Life’s new cookbook, A Whole New Way To Eat, has a range of delectable dishes to suit even the most discernible diners. The healthfood providore has teamed up with nutritionist and recipe developer Vladia Cobrdova for more than 135 delightfully fad-free meals designed with healthy eating in mind. Having perfected the recipes at About Life, Vladia is delighted to now offer them to home cooks. “The dishes in this book cover every occasion – for when you only have 10 minutes to prepare a nutritious snack to keep the energy levels up and the stress levels down, or for creating a meal to impress your guests,” she says. On the following pages we have the tangy spicy ginger and tomato soup, and a nutritious take on an old favourite, macaroni cheese.
So indulge in some healthy, hearty meals knowing that your body will thank you for it.
Spicy ginger & tomato soup The vibrant colour of this rich antioxidant soup speaks for itself. You can really see the betacarotenoids in it. INGREDIENTS
1 tbsp coconut oil 1 large Spanish onion, chopped 100g ginger, chopped 6 carrots, chopped 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes 375ml (1½ cups) coconut milk 20g coriander leaves, chopped 1 lime CRISPY TOPPING
milk, then remove from the heat. Using a stick blender, puree the soup until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, to make the crispy topping, heat the coconut oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the chilli, chopped ginger and coconut chips and stir for 5-6 minutes until crisp. To serve, ladle the soup into four bowls, scatter with the crispy topping and coriander leaves (if using), then squeeze a lime over. Tomatoes have the interesting attribute of being better for you when cooked. Cooking encourages the easier absorption of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that may even have a role in cancer prevention.
2 tsp coconut oil Fresh long red chillies, sliced 2 tsp chopped fresh ginger 40g (1 cup) coconut chips METHOD
Heat the coconut oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and ginger and cook for 2-3 minutes until golden. Add the carrots, tomatoes and 375 ml (1½ cups) of water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the carrots are very tender. Stir in the coconut

Preheat the oven to 180C (350F). Put the chopped sweet potato in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil over medium heat and cook for 15 minutes or until very soft. Drain, mash until smooth, then set aside. Meanwhile, bring a large saucepan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the pasta, stir well, cook for 10-15 minutes until tender. Drain and return to the pan. Add the mash and stir to combine. To make the sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat. continuously, gradually add the milk until smooth and well combined. Add the coconut milk, then simmer, whisking regularly, for 5 minutes or until the sauce is smooth and thick. Remove from the heat and season with the salt and pepper. Stir the sauce into the pasta and sweet potato mixture and combine well. Add the cauliflower, kale, feta and 100g (1 cup) of the grated cheddar and mix well. Spoon into a shallow 2 litre (8 cups) capacity ovenproof dish, and scatter with the remaining cheddar. AN INSPIRING CHARITY IS ENSURING BURMESE CHILDREN G E T A N E D U C AT I O N S O M A N Y O F U S TA K E F O R G R A N T E D .
W
hen he saw the queues of children lining up just to get into school, many of whom had only the shorts and thongs they were wearing, Paddy Gilfeather felt an urge to help. That’s how Building Schools for Burma, a not-for-profit charity dedicated to giving youngsters an education out of reach for so many in the southeast Asian nation, was born. “Education gives people hope and it also helps give people self respect,” Paddy says. Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a country with a scarred history. It was ruled by a vicious military junta for more than 50 years, is riddled with poverty and corruption, and has one of the worst human rights records on earth. Paddy (pictured left) has ties to the country dating back almost a century. His grandfather moved there from Scotland in the early 1930s to work with the Burma Oil Company and his grandparents were married there. For years it was too dangerous to visit, but when he finally got the chance to journey there in 2006 Paddy “fell in love with the place and the people straight away”. “When I saw children queuing up to get into school, I realised just how important education is. But then it dawned on me that what they really needed was new school buildings,” Paddy, who lives in Crows Nest, says. “So I started Building Schools for Burma and
made a promise to myself to build a school.” He decided to help a school he had visited at a monastery in Nyaung, run by a monk Paddy describes as “a great man”, that provided a free education to the poorer children of the area. “It took a few years for me to get registered as a charity and to raise the funds needed to build the first school,” he says. “Five years later, that school has grown from having 90 children to having over 400. This year, we have 22 children going on to university.” Over the years, as his relationships with people in Burma got stronger, Paddy began to travel and learn more about the country. “As it opened up politically, I was able to travel more and we were able to build a school in the Delta Region and three schools in Chin State, where we have also been able to provide them with solar panels, a fresh water supply and also toilets,” he says. “We currently have five schools in the country with another two coming this year. So far, we have helped to educate over 1000 children, for free.” And as a “micro charity”, Building Schools for Burma has zero costs: “Unlike most other charities, 100 per cent of all money donated goes towards the next school project.” For more information please contact Paddy at buildingschoolsforburma@sky.com or to make a donation go to www.justgiving.com/ buildingschoolsforburma.

Gentle care with the latest technology Established in Cammeray in 2003 & Local Business Awards Finalist 2016, Advanced Dental provides dental care beyond expectations.
Implant
1-Visit Crown
3D X-ray
Tired of loose dentures or missing teeth? Implants give you the opportunity to have a new tooth, or secure dentures without the need for unsightly wires. Both implant surgery & crowns are done in our surgery.
Why put up with 2 injections, 2 appointments & wait 2 weeks for a crown which can be made in just 1 visit. Turns out, you have better things to do with your time!
This revolutionary technology can reveal structures previously unseen in 2D X-ray, ensuring early detection & the safest treatment. We are the only surgery in Cammeray with this technology.
Our services: cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, 3D X-ray, 1-visit crown (CEREC), teeth whitening, children & general dentistry • Open: Monday - Saturday www.advanceddental.com.au • (02) 9922 6022 • Suite 2/510 Miller Street, Cammeray
