2062 Magazine & Guide – I S S U E 3

/ FIT & WELL

T

he Christmas and New Year period is often a time of indulgence and partying, meaning it’s also a great time to recommit to getting fit and healthy. Far too many of us make unrealistic New Year’s resolutions – no one is going to dive into a triathlon or pound out a marathon straight away – but the following simple tips and home workout plan will help you shed the festive excesses.

At home workout

4. Make a plan Failing to plan is planning to fail – it’s true whether your aim is to improve your overall health and fitness or doing a workout. Work out your heath and fitness goals and have a strategy about exactly how you’re going to get there, including your plan for each of your workouts.

1. Set a date Don’t put off what you can do today! Getting together with family and friends at Christmas is wonderful, but not necessarily great for our waistlines. Things also have a tendency to continue well into the new year – and before you know it it’s February! Set a date that is your day to get back into a healthy routine – and stick to it. 2. Do something active On that day plan an activity, but you don’t have to go overboard. Start slow with something positive, it could be something as simple as a walk for a set time or distance or a game of touch footy with the kids – just make sure you get moving.

3. Get rid of temptation If there aren’t any treats lying around the house, then you aren’t going to be tempted. Get rid of all that Christmas chocolate and replace it with some healthy snacks such as nuts, homemade protein balls, avocados, fruit and veggie sticks and hummus.

5. Measure your progress Ensure you keep track of your progress along the way. You can do this by performing fitness and strength tests, using tape measurements to track body fat or even via the bathroom scales. If you are on track, keep going and do something to reward yourself. If not, reassess what you can improve upon. For some more guidance to help you achieve your health & fitness goals get in touch with Graham at Health+Fitness Studio on 0411 432 403 or visit www. healthandfitnessstudio.com.au.

The main thing is to stay positive and keep going. We all have ups and downs, but the fact that you’ve made a start should make you proud.

/ REAL ESTATE

T

he Cammeray and lower north shore property market has experienced a big shift in buyer behaviour over the past three to five months. It’s evident there has been a time-lag in both agents’ and vendors’ willingness to react to the new market conditions, but the reality is we have returned to what industry veterans would call a “normal” market. For me as an agent in the field and assisting my clients in achieving the best possible result, you need to be on point with your market opinions and identify the strengths and weaknesses of a property in comparison to what has recently sold, what is currently on the market and what market conditions are like at that point in time. I always aim to equip my clients with relevant and accurate information. This, coupled with expert advice, will help them make the best decision moving forward. It’s a confusing time for vendors as they, and we as agents, obviously want the highest possible price, but ignoring the shift in buyer sentiment will result in an underwhelming selling experience. There are still exceptional sales being

achieved but at the same time price reductions have been more common as both vendors and agents adjust to the changing conditions. Meanwhile buyers have become less bullish and increasingly non-committal due to the perception that the boom is over, capital growth has slowed and being priced out of the market is no longer a dominating fear. With a marginal increase in available stock, buyers are also less willing to compromise, in some cases preparing to hold out for what they feel is a more suitable property, which isn’t always the best strategy either. Looking forward I expect capital growth in the Cammeray and lower north shore markets to remain positive albeit rising at a much slower rate than in recent years. It may feel like prices have dropped marginally of late but this is more like the hangover from a party that lasted four years – it will set itself straight and improve in time. If an agent can’t produce a comparative analysis for your home or isn’t able to tell you what other places sold in the suburb in the past week, they haven’t done their homework. And in a softer market, you can’t get away with mediocre.

TESTIMONIAL / Great agent. Trevor went above and beyond any experience I have ever had with a real estate agent. He gave sound practical advice about preparation of the house for sale and he worked really hard during the sale period to follow up with prospective buyers and keep us informed of progress. McGrath were outstanding in their management of the open house inspections and we achieved a record price at the final auction. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Trevor and McGrath, and I will appoint them again.

TESTIMONIAL / Great agent, great results! As a vendor, I was very conscious that my choice of agent was crucial. Happily, Trevor came through in spades! From the very beginning, he impressed me with his calm and measured manner, the meticulous way he explained things, his lack of both defensiveness and aggression when I challenged him, his integrity and his clarity. He is someone who chooses his words wisely. He was realistic in his appraisal of our lovely home and of the current local market conditions in this pocket of Sydney. While he always had his eye on the end game, I was very impressed with his respect for the potential buyers. Trevor communicated with me really clearly throughout the campaign, and always included me in his thinking behind the different strategic scenarios. It seems to me that the industry needs more agents like Trevor with his single focus dedication, strategic thinking abilities and professional yet pleasant manner. I am delighted with the results he achieved and I am more than happy to recommend him to others.

A

s we reclined on sun beds overlooking the vast ocean, a chilled glass of wine in hand and only the sounds of the waves and the birds accompanying us, it felt like we were miles away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. That is one of the beauties of Bannisters by the Sea in Mollymook, you’re only a short distance from Sydney but it’s so relaxing you could be a world away. The journey south used to be something to be endured rather than enjoyed, with hours spent stuck nose to tail as traffic crawled along at a snail’s pace. Thankfully this is no longer the case with road changes now ensuring a smooth ride from Sydney to Mollymook in around three hours. Bannisters by the Sea is set on a quiet street, situated perfectly to make the most of its spectacular position overlooking the ocean. It exudes a relaxed yet sophisticated charm and you can feel the tensions of the city begin to ebb away as you take in the infinity pool perched on the Pacific. The hotel has 34 luxurious rooms, suites and penthouses – all with balconies boasting breathtaking water views. Penthouses 29 and 30 have recently been transformed thanks to a spectacular renovation by acclaimed Australian designer Collette Dinnigan. She has captured a laidback seaside elegance, combining oak floorboards, white shutters, white comfy linen sofas, hand-printed cushions and Carrara marble surfaces. The attention to detail is second to none, with delightful personal touches – a chair Dinnigan bought in the south of France hand covered in Belgian linen and a collection of botanical and coral sea life sourced from French markets. Australian photographers and

26 2062 Magazine & Guide –

ISSUE 3

artists are featured throughout — including Murray Hilton and the 1970s surf nostalgia of John Witizg. The effortlessly stylish balconies feature an antique Indian day bed filled with cushions, two sun loungers and customised white cane furniture. Once you walk in you immediately feel at home and at ease – and the longer you stay, the less you ever want to leave. Of course, many people make the pilgrimage south to dine at Rick Stein at Bannisters, with tables booked up weeks in advance. The British chef is famous the world over for his mouth-watering dishes and has often spoken of his love for the sumptuous seafood the area has to offer. Situated on the ground floor, the restaurant itself is simple but elegant; with a wraparound veranda ensuring diners can lap up the ocean views. The food meanwhile is everything you hope it would be – refined, delicious and championing the seafood at the heart of every dish. We started with warm shellfish with parsley, chilli, olive oil, garlic and lemon juice to share between two of us. It was delightful and made all the more so by its simplicity – when the seafood is this good why complicate things? This was followed by an aromatic Sri Lankan seafood curry, which was beautifully balanced with just the right amount of spice, and pan-fried mahi-mahi, which once again made the most of the delicious, meaty fresh fish. The wine list is specially selected to complement the food, so whatever you choose you can be sure it will be outstanding. Next door to Rick Stein’s is the Pool Bar, set just back from the wooden-decked infinity pool. Open day and night, you can relax on one of the day beds or in one of the cute little nooks complete with built-in bench seats to drink in the views and if you’re very lucky – as we were – you might even spot a whale making its way along the coast.

Then, as the sun goes down, you can sit with a cocktail in hand and a delicious gourmet pizza at your fingertips gazing as the pool merges seamlessly with the ocean. The 2km sweep of white sand at Mollymook Beach is well known for its surf breaks and crystal clear waters. It is a wonderful spot to soak up some sun and with grassy areas behind great for a picnic it is a perfect if you want to while away a few hours. “Mollymook is a naturally beautiful beach with great waves for learning to intermediate surfers. Bannisters headland is at the centre of our two favorite learn-to-surf spots, as it offers the best shelter for prevailing winds at Mollymook and Narrawallee, both a short walk from Bannisters by the Sea,” Geoff Hansen, from Mollymook Beach Surf School, says. “I have lived here around 22 years and still love the warm and friendly vibe.”

There is also a large natural rock pool, Bogey Hole, at the southern end of the beach, which is great for snorkelling and swimming. Bannisters by the Sea has a sister hotel a short walk or shuttle ride away in Mollymook, Bannisters Pavilion, and that is where you will find the Rooftop Bar & Grill, a chic tiled bar that would give even the most stylish Sydney establishment a run for its money. You can either sit inside around the open kitchen and bar or outside next to the pool, and both offer a relaxed yet bustling atmosphere. With a sumptuous Mediterranean and Australian-influenced menu – the veal saltimbocca with polenta was a particular favourite – craft beers on tap, a great wine list and a range of delicious cocktails, it a fine way to while away the evening amid the treetops. A perfect way to end a perfectly relaxing few days.

The warmth of the spices, such as clove, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon, fill the air. “This year I’ve added both the ham and my

delicious pumpkin pie to our Christmas catering so I can bring the same magic into your home, baked and delivered on time and, most importantly, stress free.” However, for those who simply can’t resist the temptation of pulling on an apron to provide a feast for the family, the following two pages offer the chance to recreate a couple of her tasty treats for yourself. Glazed leg of ham w/ honey thyme & orange INGREDIENTS

1 x double smoked ham FOR THE GLAZE

1 cup orange juice ½ cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons of runny honey 2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 bunch thyme, stems removed and leaves chopped 2 tablespoons of seeded mustard METHOD

1. Place all glazing ingredients in a saucepan on medium heat. 2. Bring to the simmer and cook for 10 minutes. 3. Turn off the heat and leave to cool. This can be done a day or so in advance. FOR THE HAM

1. Preheat the oven to 160C (320F). 2. Cut around the base of the shank and gently prize the skin away from the fat. It is very important to leave as much fat on the ham as possible. 3. With a very sharp knife cut into the ham, scoring the fat down to the meat. 4. Turn the ham the other way and cut across the ham so you end up with little diamond shapes. 5. Stud the ham with cloves. 6. Place the ham onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and pour the glaze over the top. 7. Place in the oven on the middle shelf and continue glazing intermittently until you get a lovely glossy caramelisation. Serve hot or cold with fruit chutney on the side.

/ HELPING HAND

I

t is remarkable that at a time of great personal loss, someone’s immediate response would be to think of others. But sometimes the most selfless acts can be spurred by grief and out of heartache can come hope. When Edward Princi took his own life at the age of 38 it left his family and friends heartbroken. To everyone who knew him he was the life and soul of the party, a highly successful businessman who seemed to have everything. This tragic loss inspired his lifelong friend Luke Duffy to write and release a song, Make Sure To Look Out For Each Other, in the hope of helping others. All the money raised by its sales on iTunes will go to beyondblue to help with its vital work with men’s mental health. “Knowing how many Australian families have been touched by suicide made me want to try to write a song that would connect with all of those people,” Luke says. “Although it was a very personal message to our departed friend, the lyrics are also very universal.” According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2016 there were 2866 deaths by suicide in Australia, 75 per cent were male, and over the past 10 years suicide rates among men have been three times that for women. “Unfortunately I was all too aware of how big an issue suicide is for young men. I had been to a few funerals before for people I had known who committed suicide, but this was the first time it was so out of the blue,” Luke says. “He was such a successful, happy and popular guy with his whole life ahead of him. Nobody saw it coming and all his friends felt a lot of guilt around feeling like we could have

done more had we known how we was feeling.” Make Sure To Look Out For Each Other is dedicated to Edward, his mate of more than 25 years. After writing the song Luke gathered together Edward’s father, Harvey, and some of Edward’s closest friends to help him record it. “I wrote the song in one night a few days before the funeral and then had 10 of his best friends and his dad come into the recording studio to sing on the song the next night,” Luke says. “It was very emotional, a stirring tribute to have his friends singing together, having just flown in from all over the world. We recorded the song at Crash Symphony Studios in Neutral Bay and it was mixed by five-time ARIA award winner Paul McKercher.” Make Sure To Look Out For Each Other is now available on iTunes – with 100 per cent of all money raised going to beyondblue – and via www.lookout4eachother. com, an online tribute to Edward and the loving memories so many have of him. “The site is a memorial for him but also doubles as a suicide-prevention tool for anyone who might be battling with the day to day,” Luke says. Donations to beyondblue can also be made via the tribute site and Luke has been moved by people’s generosity. “The response has been really great,” he says. “I have received messages from many people who have lost someone to suicide telling me how much the song resonated with them. So far we have raised nearly $12,000 for beyondblue and I just hope we can raise a bit more.”

“It was a very personal message to our departed friend.”
