A Pioneer Revolutionizing Satellite Communication with Indigenous Antennas
H
istorically, the satellite communication sector in India has faced a dependency on foreign suppliers for antennas, posing challenges related to selfsufficiency and control over critical components. This reliance on external sources can result in logistical complexities, cost implications, including huge drain in Foreign exchange resource of our country for imports, and potential vulnerabilities in the supply chain. Addressing this underlying issue by establishing itself as a leading indigenous antenna manufacturer, Comsat Systems Pvt. Ltd is working towards achieving self-sufficiency and promoting the use of domestically developed antennas in the competitive
landscape of satellite communication. The company seeks to replace imported solutions, fostering India’s more self-reliant and resilient satellite communication industry. Through this, it aims to meet industry needs while aligning with a broader goal of reducing dependency on foreign suppliers and ensuring a sustainable and competitive domestic landscape. The Brainchild of an Industry Leader Comsat was founded by John Saripally, a former Engineer with MASEG, ISRO and later as Deputy General Manager at ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India Limited). He later transitioned into entrepreneurship and retired voluntarily in 1991 to spearhead the company as the Managing Director. With an extensive background in satellite communication spanning over 50 years, John’s familiarity with the industry and personal connections facilitated a seamless management transition. In fact, Comsat gained prominence when approached by HCL Comnet and Hughes to develop 3.8meter antennas, aiming to replace imports from foreign suppliers such as Prodelin or ViaSat. Successfully meeting international specifications, including ITU-580-5, the antennas received approval from NOCC for use in VSATs and stations starting in 1994. This marked a turning point for the company, further propelling it to gradual growth and solidifying its position as a prominent antenna manufacturer in India by 2000. Coupled with these, Comsat’s commitment to innovation, stringent testing, and adherence to international standards reflect its dedication to providing high-quality, domestically manufactured antenna systems in the current industry scenario. Journey of Entrepreneurial Vision and Business Resilience

Comsat’s journey is a narrative of entrepreneurial vision, technical expertise, and strategic agreement with ISRO for Transfer of Technology’s collaboration. From its establishment in 1991 to emerging as a leading antenna manufacturer by 2000, the company exemplifies resilience, innovation, and a commitment to excellence in satellite communication. With a foundation built on expertise, quality, and strategic partnerships, the company continues to contribute significantly to the domestic satellite communication industry. Moreover, its success is not only rooted in technical prowess but also in effective collaboration. Leveraging the founder’s industry relationships, the

company navigated challenges and earned the trust of key players like HCL Comnet, HFCL and Hughes in the initial years, but later on with all the major players in the industry like ISRO, Defense & Broadcasting sectors. The approval of its antennas for VSATs and Hub stations solidified its position in the market. In the modern industry landscape, Comsat stands as a testament to the potential for indigenous manufacturing to thrive in a competitive landscape. By replacing imported antennas with domestically developed and approved solutions, the company met industry needs and contributed to reducing dependency on foreign suppliers. John’s contribution to the field has led many to view the company as a pioneer in satellite communication. Comsat’s sustained success is evident through its current order book, which stands at crores. Furthermore, the validation of their antennas in the USA, Germany, and other global locations attests to the company’s technical prowess and unwavering caliber. He spearheads the Comsat at the forefront and significantly propels it towards greater heights of success. Trusted Choice for Defense and Military Applications Comsat Systems Pvt. Ltd. is pioneering in the Indian antenna systems market. Its commitment to quality, innovative solutions, and strategic collaborations have positioned the company as the goto choice for ISRO, Defense, and various entities involved in satellite communication. Beyond military applications, Comsat’s antennas have impacted remote areas like Assam, where the Hindustan HCL community deployed them for satellite communication in 2002
Rising to the Ranks by Overcoming Hindrances Although empowered by a resilient journey in the satellite communication sector, Comsat has undergone several challenges that hindered its growth. During the initial stages, the company faced a subdued market demand due to the prerequisite of international specifications approval for its products. It invested nearly three to four years in the meticulous manufacturing, testing, and approval processes for its antennas to gain market acceptance. Since 1991, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), specifically the Space Application Center in Ahmedabad, has emerged as the sole entity placing orders on its innovative antenna concepts. However, the turning point for Comsat occurred in 1994 or 1995 when Indian companies involved in satellite communication embraced Comsat Systems Pvt. Ltd.’s antennas. The company witnessed a significant surge in orders, with thousands of antennas being purchased. The 3.8-meter antenna, approved by HCL Comnet and Hindustan HFCL, gained remarkable traction, with the latter acquiring over 1000 units. In 1998, following the Kargil War, Comsat’s antennas played a pivotal role in the line of control. Approximately 56 antennas were strategically positioned along the line of sight, and the primary station was established on Delhi Ridge Rd. This project has endured since its inception, spanning more than 25 years, and the end-users continue to express satisfaction with its antennas’ performance.

Comsat antennas are operational from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, and from Assam in the Far East to Rajasthan in the West, numbering over 5000 across India. The company has firmly established itself as the country’s primary provider of antenna systems. Comsat’s key clientele includes ISRO, covering all its constituent units, such as the Space Application Center in Ahmedabad, Hassan Master Control Facility in Hassan, and ISTRAC in Bangalore, NRSA in Hyderabad and Sriharikota other locations for satellite tracking during launch, is another area where its antennas play a crucial role. Defense establishments, recognizing the quality and reliability of its products, have also become significant clients over the years. Additionally, the Signal Intelligence Directorate of Delhi has incorporated Comsat’s antennas in various locations, showcasing their versatility and effectiveness in defense applications A Dominant Force in the Indian Market Presently, Comsat stands as a dominant force in the Indian market, strategically managing its competitive landscape, expanding its international footprint, and maintaining financial stability while actively contributing to significant defense and space-related initiatives. Standing headstrong in the market with strong recognition, it acknowledges ECIL Electronics Corporation of India as its sole competitor within the Indian market, both companies originating from ECIL. The company has a rich history, with its founder working at ECIL for two decades. Currently, ECIL Electronics Corporation of India stands as the only domestic rival.

Lakshadweep is like a real-life Avalon, a mysterious island from the Arthurian legend. Similar to the Avalon’s legendary charm, Lakshadweep islands are known for its beautiful and isolated coral atolls. It also features stunning lagoons that disguise many biodiverse mysteries beneath their surface. In Lakshadweep, cultural treasures and vibrant marine life create a unique attraction, making it a real-world counterpart to the legendary Avalon. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, and the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur. This article makes that boundary a bit clear and denes everything you need to know about Lakshadweep islands.

HISTORY OF LAKSHADWEEP 34 | February 2024
Arrival of a Muslim saint Legend has it that a Muslim saint, guided by a dream of the Prophet, traveled to Lakshadweep to spread Islam. Initially rejected, a girl fell in love with him, leading to conflict. The saint's prayers caused temporary blindness, and when he left, sight returned. Through miracles, he won people's trust, and Lakshadweep embraced Islam, blending Islamic and Hindu traditions. Today, his grave on Andrott Island remains sacred.
The Race between India and Pakistan In 1947, right after India gained independence, Pakistan eyed Lakshadweep despite the geographical distance. Sardar Patel, the Home Minister, swiftly acted. The Mudaliyar brothers from Malabar, with a limited battalion and scarce weapons, hoisted the Indian flag on Lakshadweep on Patel's orders. Just in time, a ship with a Pakistani flag approached, creating a nail-biting situation!
First humans to set foot on Lakshadweep King Perumal of the Chera dynasty is believed to have converted to Islam and left for Mecca from his Malabar empire in the 7th century. Hindu sailors who were searching for him landed on Bangaram island after their ship was wrecked in a storm near Lakshadweep. When they returned to Malabar, they explored other Lakshadweep islands. Later, a group from Malabar, including sailors and soldiers, settled permanently on Amini Island.
The Portuguese & British invasion In the 1490s, the Portuguese attempted to colonize Kochi but were driven away. They then turned Lakshadweep into a seafarers' hub, exploiting coconut coir. Islanders cleverly ousted them later. Over time, Lakshadweep's rule shifted among Malabar royal houses, eventually under the care of the Arakkal family. Dissatisfied with oppressive rulers, islanders sought help from Tipu Sultan in Mangalore, Karnataka. Following discussions, Tipu gained control over parts of Lakshadweep. After Tipu's demise in the 1790s, the British acquired five islands under him. This might explain the rare presence of Kannada speakers in Lakshadweep.
www.theenterpriseworld.com | 35
These points broadly summarize the history of Lakshadweep Islands. However there are many more such tales that define the mystique of this place.
ECONOMY OF LAKSHADWEEP ISLANDS Agriculture and shing: Lakshadweep relies on coconut palms for agriculture, exporting copra to the mainland. In certain areas, coral removal and organic fertilization enable the cultivation of bananas, vegetables, root crops, and millet. Fishing, especially for tuna, is a significant economic activity, with skilled navigators using traditional boats called odam to sail between islands and the mainland.
Manufacturing: Lakshadweep’s main industry revolves around fish processing, particularly tuna. Minicoy hosts a tuna cannery and follows traditional bonito drying methods. Other manufacturing activities in the region include coir production, hosiery production, weaving, and boat building.
Lakshadweep Tourism: Lakshadweep promotes responsible tourism with mandatory permits and governmentsponsored tour packages. Additionally, the islands boast vibrant coral reefs and pristine beaches, offering a unique natural experience.
Transportation: Lakshadweep is linked to mainland India by sea and air. The nearest seaport is Kozhikode and ships to the islands depart from Kochi. Agatti Island has an airport with regular flights to and from Kochi. Helicopter services connect the mainland and islands. However, Lakshadweep has limited road infrastructure, with only a few miles of roads.

Ÿ Why visit Lakshadweep?
Ÿ Land and Climate:
Just 10m from the shore, dive into turquoise waters to discover vibrant coral and Nemo (yes, the Clownfish). The islands, surrounded by coconut groves, offer constant sea views as you drive. With a small population of 66,000, it feels like there are more coconut trees than people. Lakshadweep’s regulated tourism preserves its marine and land ecosystems, creating an eco-friendly haven. For an affordable beach getaway with India’s cleanest shores, head to the less-explored Lakshadweep.
Lakshadweep consists of small islands, without exceeding the width of 1 mile. The Amindivis are the northmost, and Minicoy is the southmost. Inhabited islands are mostly coral atolls, with higher eastern sides suitable for living and lagoons on the west protecting from monsoons. The sandy soils are coral-derived. Temperatures range from about 70 °F to nearly 90 °F throughout the year. Cyclones rarely make landfall on the Arabian Sea islands, but their associated winds and waves can alter the topography. Ÿ Plant and Animal Life: Lakshadweep Islands teems with coconut palms and diverse trees, including banyans, casuarinas, pandani (screw pines), breadfruits, tamarinds, and tropical almonds. Betel nuts and betel leaves thrive here. In the surrounding waters, sharks, bonitos, tunas, snappers, and flying fish are prominent, while manta rays, octopuses, crabs, turtles, and various gastropods abound. The islands also host a variety of water birds like herons, teals, and gulls. Ÿ People and Faith: People in Lakshadweep, except on Minicoy, trace their roots to migrants from the Malabar Coast in southwest India, arriving before the 7th century CE. These migrants, later converting to Islam, established the predominant religion in Lakshadweep. While Islam is the main faith, remnants of the original Hindu migrants’ religious and social practices persist, as seen in matrilineal kinship and caste-like groups. Malayalam is the primary language, with Mahi spoken on Minicoy and some Hindi speakers. The population is concentrated on Andrott, Kavaratti, Minicoy, and Amini islands. What, Where, and Why Lakshadweep Islands? Ÿ What and where is Lakshadweep? Located 500 km southwest of Kochi, the 4200 sq km lagoon land of Lakshadweep comprises 36 islands, of which only ten are inhabited, covering a total landmass of 32 sqm. Despite its political and historical connection to India, it remains somewhat isolated from mainland developments. The islands faced challenges due to the delayed communication of Gandhi’s assassination, which took 14 days to reach them. Primarily dependent on imports, from tissue paper to vegetables and electricity, everything comes from the Indian mainland, as the islands lack power plants for electricity generation.
Ÿ How to reach Lakshadweep? Start your Lakshadweep journey in Kochi, Kerala, accessible by cruise or flight. Kochi, a delightful blend of colonial and Malabar architecture, offers a fascinating start. Spend a few days exploring this vibrant city before choosing between a flight or cruise to Lakshadweep Islands based on your preferences. Once on the islands, walking is sufficient, as they are easily navigable. Boats are the primary mode of transport, and while there’s a chopper service, it’s pricier for island hopping. Best Things to do in Lakshadweep: A Group of 36 Islands 1. Don’t miss the beautiful view during Agatti’s landing After landing at 30+ airports worldwide, most flights are uneventful. A 120m-wide black runway, seemingly floating amid turquoise waters, bordered by green bushes and white sand. It is one of the most beautiful sights as your first glimpse of this island paradise is from the plane. Capturing the moment is like securing a Lakshadweep travel permit – challenging. 2. Boats take you to prime diving spots, while just a short walk from your room unveils a psychedelic underwater world for snorkeling. Wear water-resistant shoes to explore sunken shipwrecks with metal plates underneath. The underwater is covered with vibrant corals and fish, disconnecting you from the everyday hustle. Lakshadweep vs Maldives: A Closer Look into the Controversy The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep on January 2, 2024, has triggered a significant shift in travel plans for many Indians, diverting attention from the Maldives. Obtaining a permit is a prerequisite for visiting Lakshadweep, even for Indian citizens, setting it apart from more accessible destinations like Andamans or Pondicherry. Striking a balance, the local authorities must manage tourist inflow to prevent over-tourism and maintain the island’s unique charm. Deel Customer Reviews: “Necessary ally”: I am relieved to have Deel as my payroll platform. We the contractors needed a flexible tool like this that offers different methods of withdrawing your money, clarity on contract management, and many useful tools that are constantly added while keeping its GUI simple. The most valuable tool for me is the "advance Deel" tool that allows you to request multiple cash advances of your contract payments at very low rates. You don't have to wait for your client to pay you to have the funds. It would be more comfortable to have language management for the GUI, but that's more a desire than a need. Deel Helped Me Focus on My Job: Deel provides an intuitive and user-friendly platform that simplifies the entire process of working with international clients. As a programmer from Brazil, navigating through the platform was seamless, making it easy to understand and use. This helps me focus solely on my job instead of getting worried about my finances and how I'm going to receive payments that month. Once a month I open the app and check my

current contract, withdrawing to my account or advancing a payment. All documents and invoices are conveniently placed and it's easy to transfer everything to my accounting service. Another great thing to consider is customer support, available in multiple languages, which helped me when I got started. One small issue I had, which was more on my end, was relying on the Deel advance service. I had to pause a contract for a month, and when resuming it I couldn't use the advance as it required two consecutive months of payment. Great Platform (Robust and good support team): I have been using Deel for a year now and I have seen many new features coming all this time moreover the most important and best thing that I like is the fast withdrawal everything else is just the cherry on top + when you withdraw the support team is always there to support in case you need any other assistance. Regarding usability, I can add my fullday / half-day leave and new expenses, and payment tracking is just amazing. I think the wallet thing they have set up is a bit expensive to withdraw and use.
