professionals to Winter Park from around the world, providing learners with the tools and instruction necessary to compete in tomorrow's business environment, and acting as a hub not just for Rollins and Winter Park, but also for the wider Central Florida business community. About Rollins College Founded in 1885, Rollins College is a comprehensive college and nationally recognized leader in liberal arts education. The College defines its mission around two distinct pillars – educating students for global citizenship and responsible leadership

– and holds excellence, innovation, and community as guiding principles. Rollins College's commitment to innovation and excellence led to the creation of the Crummer School's predecessor in 1957. The Crummer Graduate School of Business, as it exists today, was founded in 1980, when the School made the decision to enroll only master's-level students in both its full- and part-time programs. In Fall 2013, the School expanded its programs to the doctoral level with the launch of its Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (EDBA) program.

Paving Her Way to Become the Dean

“We have exceptional faculty and staff members here at Crummer who are all uniquely committed to providing a highly personal and collaborative experience for our students.”

their own units, which resulted in communication challenges and missed opportunities. They quickly moved to better integrate the staff, starting with the centralization of their marketing efforts so that the team would make sure that they were singularly focused on communicating their mission. Second, Dr. Crown and her team integrated all the student-facing groups into a singular cluster to optimize resources and ensure a seamless student experience. We strive to be recognized as a world-class graduate business school.” Crummer is renowned for its excellence in preparing global, innovative and responsible business leaders. And they expect them to positively impact their organizations, and also their communities. “Since I joined Crummer close to six years ago, we have recommitted ourselves to that vision and mission to ensure we are providing the best education possible while also creating a mission-driven financial model that enables us to better focus on delivering on our vision and mission.” The Road Ahead Crummer is a boutique business school by design. The Evolution of Entrepreneurship The pandemic brought an unprecedented period of change to the workplace. Everyone had to quickly adapt to life in a virtual environment. Having been forced to offer remote work alternatives for employees during the pandemic, many jobs have now gone remote permanently, while other jobs have returned to in-person roles. This mixed-mode environment is not only something for Crummer to be aware of and adapt to; it is also

essential that they are providing an educational experience that mirrors the workplace and prepares their graduates to excel in mixed-mode environments. “At the same time, these changes are providing enormous new opportunities for entrepreneurs.” There has been increased entrepreneurial activity in Central Florida, and there also has been increased interest in funding these efforts. The institute's own annual

Crummer Venture Plan Competition is the region's largest and most comprehensive annual business plan competition. This past year, they have partnered with Orange County to significantly increase their prize package. “Our first-place winners, Ostrich, received a $50,000 grand prize. This kind of support is essential to making sure the Orlando area is at the forefront of entrepreneurship.”

Dr. Crown's Message to the Budding Entrepreneurs “Entrepreneurs need to be experts in all areas of business, which can be overwhelming as individuals work tirelessly to launch their ventures. It's important for entrepreneurs to leverage connections with other entrepreneurs as well as opportunities for further education and training. With our extensive and highly engaged alumni community, as well as our expertise, the Crummer School can be an

invaluable resource for regional entrepreneurs,” said Dean Crown. “Our Crummer Center for Advanced Entrepreneurship provides resources and support to help guide entrepreneurs. And many entrepreneurs choose to enroll in one of our MBA programs, as we provide unmatched educational opportunities specifically tailored to the entrepreneurial community.”

stablishing a business is no easy feat. It requires much more than just a good business model, capital, business plan, etc. At its core, it requires a talented and indomitable leadership that fuels the company and runs its products/services in the market effectively and progressively. A lot of things come to mind when the word entrepreneur pops up. But despite the definitions, aspiration, and motivation attached to it, it becomes a different word when one steps out in the market. In this edition of The Enterprise World, we feature and commend some of the most enterprising women of the year.

In conversation with Jennifer Barnes, Founder, and CEO of Optima Office. Let's hear more about the company, her professional journey, and much more! Tell us about Optima Office, and what inspired you to start your company? I started Optima in October of 2018 after my expartners did a hostile takeover of my first company. I made the mistake of being in a situation with my first company where I only owned 45% of the organization. I brought in over 90% of all the revenue and most of the employees. We were the 5th fastest growing company in San Diego our 4th year in business and things seemed

to be going extremely well, until- well- they weren't. In year 6, after a couple of years of being in a bad relationship with my partners, they found a way to do a hostile takeover of the company. I was walked out with security and had everything taken from me. Within three days, however, I started company #2 and within three weeks, I moved across the street from them. 27 of the employees came with me and I ended up prevailing pretty quickly in court by being allowed to compete against the other company I owned. Fast forward 3 and a half years later, Optima is twice the size. It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me! What are the products or services the company focuses on? Optima provides an entire accounting and HR team to businesses in all industries and of all sizes. We can also fill the gaps at any level, from the bookkeeping role to the CFO or HR Director. Our main focus is on providing our clients with strategic advice, financial statements they can rely on and human resource services that keep them out of trouble and their employees happy. How are your services different from those in the market? We personalize our services to every client. We always have availability at every level and never squeeze square pegs into round holes. We are also one of the only female-run accounting firms around.

Please tell us about your team? We have 85 employees and are 65% women currently. Half of our team are Controller level and above and we have some of the most talented professionals in the market. We promote worklife balance and take exceptional care of our team. Retention is our biggest focus and we do everything we can to live by the theme that happy staff equals happy clients. Tell us about your professional experience? I started my career in the accounting department at Petco after I graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, and Marketing. I moved my way up the ladder quickly and a few years after graduating ended up in a consulting role as a Controller for numerous companies and nonprofits throughout San Diego. Learning quickly that I needed to further my education I earned an MBA from San Diego State University in 2008 (EMBA 17) and completed the Becker CPA courses in 2011. After consulting for two of our current competitors for almost 5 years, I started my first company and the rest is history. Please share some of the key achievements of your business journey? I was placed in the top 40 under 40 business leaders in San Diego County and earned the spot in the SDBJ's Women who Mean Business for 5 years in a row. I was featured in the woman of the year for San Diego Magazine for the past two years in a row, a finalist for CEO of the year in 2017 as well as being named the 2017 Young Entrepreneur of the year for the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. I was also awarded the most influential leader in 2016 by the Connected Women of Influence and

24

in the same year was a semi-finalist in EY's Entrepreneur of the year. At Optima, I have been bestowed with another 22 awards. ntrepreneurs are no doubt the leaders of today, the inspiration of tomorrow, but most importantly they are the key to the future. It is because of their innovation and class apart thinking, that companies offer exemplary and unique products/services that alleviate life and the technology as a whole. We came across another visionary, entrepreneur, and leader. Pae (Utoomprurkporn) Natwilai is the founder of Trik. Trik is a drone mapping and 3D reporting software for structural inspection. Pae is truly a splendid example of an entrepreneur and is all set to catch the top spot of enterprising women of the year! Let's get to know more about Trik, its services, and Pae's professional journey. All along the lines of some interesting conversation in this Enterprise World's exclusive interview. Brief us about the company, what inspired you to start the company? Trik is a drone data analytic software for structural inspection. It works like a google map but for buildings and it works in 3D. We use multiple photographs to create a digital 3D model of the

www.theenterpriseworld.com

33

structure and allow you to simply store, search and analyze these data seamlessly in 3D. When I was working as an inspection and maintenance engineer, the main pain point is being able to store and search for relevant information about the area I'm working on. I worked in an oil and gas industry where the site is in the middle of the ocean with a limited internet connection. You need to properly plan everything before you take a helicopter to the site. This means I need to search through decades of photos and reports to get the best understanding of the area to plan what I need when I'm there. Because all the information is stored in a folder system, it is very difficult to find photos of the nearby area, and find which section of the monthly reports related to the area you are interested in. If the actual structures in the world are in 3D, why can't we store digital information about these structures in 3D as well? With my frustration (and also many of my colleague's), I decided to create that technology myself. What are the products or services the company focuses on? How are your services different from those in the market? Not only that you can create a digital 3D model from drone pictures, but the key difference of

34

MAY 2022

our offer is also that you can then use these 3D models as a folder system to store information and track change over time in 3D. You can simply click anywhere on the 3D model to search for photos that you want. For example, if you use a drone for a small 8-story building inspection, you may end up with over 2,000 photos of similar-looking windows and facades. It's very hard to trace back where each photo came from because the GPS that is embedded in the photos is not accurate enough to tell the difference between pictures taken from the 3rd floor and 4th floor. With Trik, you can simply click on the 3D model to see every photo of the window you are interested in. We also have an AI algorithm that can automatically detect any change in 3D, making it much easier to compare what you built with the design, compare the progress on of your construction site each day, as well as track deuteriations of the structure over time in 3D. Please tell us about your team. We have a team of 7 incredible people with experiences ranging from an expert in Drone, Real-time 3D mapping, Computer vision, AI, system architecture, and UX/UI designer to technical support.

Please brief us about your professional experience. I'm a Mechanical Engineer by trade. I used to work as an inspection and maintenance engineer in the Oil and Gas industry before I decided to expand my knowledge to study Innovation design and create my startup as a spin-out of my masters degree. What are the key achievements of your business journey? Since I started my business, we have been selected for many awards and were featured in much international news. I was selected as one of the Forbes 30 under 30 (2018), as well as one of the Top 100 BAME leaders influencing the tech sector, (Financial Times, 2019), Top 100 Asian stars in UK tech list (Asian in Tech, 2021) We were interviewed on the BBC Business live morning news, Bloomsburg, the Financial Times, Huffington post as well as many other national and international media. We were also selected as one of the Top 10 most innovative aviation and aerospace solution providers by Insight success, 2018 What is your favorite quote? Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.
