The resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte as the secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) was no huge surprise for Filipinos This action ultimately declares her exit from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr’s Cabinet also suggesting the ending point of their 2022 electoral alliance “Uniteam” The last two years in DepEd under Duterte has been left with poorly planned projects, an alarming performance in global education assessments, and still underdeveloped school facilities

“Am I really ready for this?” she wondered, her gaze lingering on the rooms that had witnessed countless school dramas The hallways, once bustling with footsteps and whispered secrets, now stretched out before her like an uncharted map Chairs, rooms, and physics notes these were the artifacts of her high school days but beyond those walls lay a new world waiting to be explored

Moving the tassel of her cap from right to left, symbolizing a gesture marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another

Raymond Carlo Mendoza academic area lead for languages in Centro Escolar Integrated School-Malolos and publication adviser of The Escolarian, led a one-hour talk in the recollection of graduating college students of Colegio de Calumpit Incorporated (CCI) in the CCI gymnasium on June 25, 2024

The talk began with statistics, studies show that around 60% of youths today are highly dependent on social media Online platforms are great avenues of communication and information, however, they also pose significant risks to mental health

There is no doubt that more Filipinos support volleyball now that the sport has become extremely popular in the Philippines While the Philippines has long been known for its three Bs basketball boxing and beauty pageants volleyball appears to be setting itself a distinct spot and perhaps joining the Pinoy Craze

Play after play, with yells echoing across arenas and sold-out, blockbuster ticket sales, the nation becomes the new beating heart of volleyball

With the national government debt of the Philippines reaching P158 trillion as of February 2024, it is wise that every centavo from Filipino taxpayers’ hardearned money be spent on purposeful expenditures There are countless integral areas in Filipinos’ lives that are in dire need for invention and innovation, such as healthcare, job opportunities, housing, public transportation, and food allocation However, as if to spite the people and taxpayers in the face, the government instead chooses to allocate billions of its budget on avertible projects, citing the most recent case of the New Senate Building (NSB)

The attendees’ placards were divided into categories; some were about issues concerning the LQBTQIA+ community, while others were about other national and international humanitarian crises which serves as a reminder that the festival is not only a culminating activity but also a protest

"With the absence of a national SOGIE Equality law, we and our families remain vulnerable to discrimination and violence and are hindered from becoming happy and contributing to society " Liban added

Despite the heavy rain the celebrations of

Centro Escolar Integrated School's graduates proved stronger as they made their final walk as high school students

Dr Romel B Cruz delivered his speech as the guest speaker highlighting resilience humility and adaptability

He urged graduates to learn from failures, stay grounded regardless of their intelligence, and remain motivated in facing adversity

Dr Cruz also encouraged innovationandflexibilityandtobe prepared to navigate any situations theyencounter.

In her speech Precious Sabine Pinto the batch valedictorian reflected on her early misconceptions about success and learning the importance of personal growth over mere academic achievement

In elementary school I believed success was only defined by being at the top However I soon realized that fulfillment comes from personal growth and perseverance she said

She showed her appreciation to the teachers mentors and every member of the non-teaching staff, saying: “You have all contributed to my growth and success, and for that, I am deeply grateful”

She also thanked her friends who supported her in times of difficulties

Pinto further expressed her gratitude to her family She thanked her parents for their guidance and belief in her, and her grandmother for her wisdom and love Pinto also acknowledged her Papang for his role in her journey, pointing to his sacrifices and knowledge

n June 27, 2024, the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB)

approved a recommendation to suspend toll collections for all vehicles passing through the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) throughout July

This decision followed an initiative by the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA), which operates the toll road in a joint venture with Cavitex Infrastructure Corporation (CIC)

The plan was first announced by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr during the inaugural ceremony of the Cavitex C5 Link Sucat Interchange on June 21, and subsequently approved by the TRB

During the inauguration, President Marcos expressed his gratitude to the TRB for swiftly enforcing the toll suspension which also includes the newly inaugurated Sucat Interchange

He emphasized the importance of this regulation in providing relief to motorists and supporting the community

However, the decision has garnered mixed reactions from various stakeholders In a statement, the Cavite Infrastructure Corporation (CIC) expressed concerns over the financial impact of the toll suspension

“ The suspension can result in toll revenue losses amounting to hundreds of millions of pesos, the CIC stated

The corporation highlighted that toll receipts are essential for paying lenders, recouping investments, ensuring road safety, and covering operational and administrative expenses

The public’s response has been equally divided Many Filipinos took to social media to share their views with some posting videos of their toll-free journeys and displaying posters of politicians like Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr Governor Jonvic Remulla and President Marcos

She also recognized God, for the gift of knowledge, the supportive network he provided, and the strength acquired from his grace

In her speech Pinto called attention to the maturation of perspectives as they approach adulthood stressing the need for solidarity with the oppressed in global crises like those in Congo Palestine Sudan and Yemen

She urged using their platforms to speak out against injustice and advocate for liberation, highlighting the responsibility of future leaders to take decisive actions

The ceremony concluded with the graduates singing Your Love by Jim Brickman as a tribute song to their parents and Long Live by Taylor Swift as their graduation song, wrapping up the twopart ceremony, following the Moving Up & Commencement Exercise held in the morning.

Comments on these posts often contained sarcastic remarks such as “Hello Election 2025!” and “Thank you taxpayers!”, suggesting that the toll holiday might be politically motivated

As the toll suspension takes effect, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact both the motorists benefiting from the free passage and the operators managing the financial implications

Graduates of batch 2024 moved their tassels to the left, symbolizing the end of their high school journey and the start of their new ventures.

The Presidential Communications Office(PCO)postedanannoun-

cement on July 2 2024 stating that President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr appointed Senator Juan Edgardo Sonny Angara as the new Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), replacing Vice President Sara Duterte who resigned on June 19, 2024

According to the PCO s statement Marcos announced the appointment of Angara as the new DepEd secretary during the 17th Cabinet Meeting in Malacañan Palace in which Angara accepted the position

“Sonny has agreed to take on the brief of the Department of Education ” Marcos said at the meeting according to the PCO

The PCO also said that Angara has made a large contribution to education, stating that Angara has an extensive legislative history, having championed significant educational reforms since joining the Senate in 2013

He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines Diliman, a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics, and a Master of Laws from Harvard University

Some of his prior legislative work includes the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act and the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (K-12)

DepEd is arguably the most important department given the crucial role of education, Marcos stated, according to the PCO

In May

country increased to 4 1 percent, slightly up from the previous month's 4 percent, as more Filipinos entered the labor force, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) report released on Monday, July 8

The latest statistics indicate a slight decrease in the number of unemployed Filipinos in May 2024, with figures at 2 11 million, down from 2 17 million in May 2023

However there was an increase from April 2024 where unemployment stood at 2 04 million

Meanwhile the nation's employment rate in May of this year was 95 9% which was down from April 2024's 96 0 percent but up from 95 7 percent in May of the previous year

However, during a press conference, Claire Dennis Mapa, the PSA chief and National Statistician, noted that the underemployment rate rose to 9 9% in May from 9 6% in April

In another statement, Angara was grateful to Marcos for trusting and appointing him as the new DepEd Secretary

“I am deeply honored and grateful to President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr for the trust he has placed in me by appointing me as the secretary of the Department of Education

This significant responsibility is one I accept with humility and a profound sense of duty he said

He also said that he is committed to working with all sectors of society, including my predecessor Vice President Sara Duterte to ensure that every Filipino child has access to quality education I look forward to building upon her accomplishments ”

Additionally Angara said that education was the cornerstone of our nation s future and it is through collective effort that we can address the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead "

Duterte’s resignation will take effect on July 19 2024 without providing a reason; however, she stated that her resignation was not an act of “weakness” but rather an expression of her compassion for the teachers and Filipino youth

This indicates that in May, 4 82 million of the 48 87 million people who were employed looked for part-time work or longer hours

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) reaffirmed that the government would persist in its efforts to boost investments and execute important technological and inventive changes with the goal of raising productivity and creating more high-quality jobs

NEDA's Secretary Arsenio M Balisacan emphasized the agency ' s ongoing efforts on the Trabaho Para sa Bayan (TPB) plan

Former President Rodrigo Duterte has denied Vice President Sara Duterte's statement that he, along

with the current mayor congressman of Davao City, will be running for Senate seats in the 2025 elections during an event in Tacloban City last Sunday, June 30

"Maniwala kayo kay Inday? I-jamming ka niyan nang husto Saan ka nakakita ng tatay pati dalawang anak magtakbo [sa Senado] Wag kayong kumagat kay Inday kasi yan si Inday kagaya ko rin yan he said

Duterte described the prospect of himself and his two sons serving in the Senate together as strange or "unusual "

“Anong gagawin namin sa Senate Anong gagawin namin doon?” he added

On June 25 Vice President Sara Duterte "confirmed" that her father and two brothers Baste and Paolo would be running for Senate seats in 2025, citing information from her mother

This announcement has reignited debates on political dynasties and Congress's failure to enact legislation banning them as stipulated in the 1987 Constitution

However, former President Rodrigo Duterte has made it clear that he would not be entering politics again, citing financial constraints

which is intended to serve as the Philippines' roadmap for comprehensive employment creation and economic recovery

“Since June, we have been conducting public consultations for the TPB Plan across all regions in the country We want to involve both employers and workers in understanding how various changes in the economy, society, and the environment have been affecting the world of work and how the different labor market actors have been adjusting to the changes The key is to identify effective and efficient solutions to their challenges and may continue to encounter,” Balisacan said

"Hindi na ako babalik ng politika Tapos na po ako Laos na ako Wala na akong panggastos, wala na lahat Ang naiwan sa akin siguro yabang," Duterte said

On the other hand Dr Froilan Calilung a political analyst from the University of Santo Tomas suggests that these supposedly conflicting statements might be a strategic move to gauge public perception

Maganda yung impresyon na na-create nito na para bang hindi sila ganid sa posisyon they’re not really greedy to be in power Pero when you keep on doing the same thing it creates public confusion and it may erode the trust in [their] words,” the analyst said

Dr Calilung also added that it could be part of the strategy for them (the Dutertes) to assess things thoroughly for the upcoming 2025 elections

I

“I think this is the single strongest piece of evidence already ” Ayon naman kay Comelec chairman George Garcia noong ika-30 ng Hunyo, maaari silang magsampa ng kaso sa nasabing opisyal

Istunning face are not sufficient for the public to idolize a celebrity anymore

For many celebrity fanatics staying silent about issues is no longer acceptable

These fans are starting to demand and urge their idols to use their platforms for the greater good

With the rise of “cancel culture," many celebrities are put into microscopic spotlights, where they are criticized for every moment they don’t speak about an issue

Amidst the joyful drenching of Wattah Wattah Festival, the line between festivity andinconvenienceblurs

Othe annual San Juan Fiesta, also known as Basaan or Wattah Wattah Festival, which brought together both locals and visitors Amid the celebratory atmosphere and the intense summer heat, it was hard to miss one of the focal points of the day: people of all ages, carrying hoses, buckets, and water guns, joyfully dousing each other in water

This day commemorates the birth of St John the Baptist a prominent figure in the Catholic Church known for baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River He was later imprisoned and executed on the orders of King Herod

Despite Basaan being a yearly tradition the San Juan Metro Manila government implemented limits via a 2018 ordinance to protect individuals in public and private vehicles many of whom are unrelated to the celebration and are merely trying to make a living Reports of people drenching motorcyclists truck drivers and jeepney passengers students and workers sparked a social media outcry this year

Take the ongoing Israel-Palestine war; many celebrities are now considered “canceled” for their silence about the issue

The American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift is one of the main examples of this phenomenon

Swift has been facing countless criticisms and backlash for her silence about the issue Many people claim that she only speaks up about issues that concern her, calling her a “white performative activist ”

Another example is the singer and actress Selena Gomez who faced the same criticisms as Swift leading her to post an Instagram story that read I wish I could change the world But a post won t

Raising the argument of whether a celebrity should still involve themselves in issues

We are all aware of the quote With great power comes great responsibility” from the Marvel comic Spider-Man

Even though celebrities are neither lawmakers nor government officials they possess a certain power that a mere individual doesn t have: their fame and platform

They have a voice that can be heard by millions and millions of people, a platform that is accessible to many

Celebrities should be responsible for how they use their platforms

They have the ability to educate and spread awareness

What was once a much-loved event has now become a point of conflict since it causes disturbance to other people

Imagine strolling through city streets, only to be unexpectedly drenched from head to toe by water guns or hoses wielded by people celebrating the feast The sudden shock can lead to frustration, inconvenience, and even discomfort, especially for those carrying personal belongings or heading to school or work, or even simply to those people who do not wish to participate in the said event

What may be exhilarating for some can be disruptive and even distressing for others Respect and empathy should not be subordinated to the preservation of tradition

While the origins of Basaan may be traced back to symbolic regeneration, the modern version of the festivity occasionally seems to ignore the comfort and consent of people who are unintentionally caught in the crossfire Shouldn t everyone have the right to enjoy public spaces without the fear of being soaked to the bone?

Change starts with a voice that speaks up and if you have a voice that many people are able to hear, you should use it to help those who can’t speak for themselves

If you can use your voice to sing in a 3-hour-long concert you can use it to raise awareness within 3 minutes

Before we are celebrities lawmakers or professionals we are humans first

We should always remember that as humans, we have a duty to society a duty to stand for what is right and to help those in need because change starts with each and everyone of us

Just like what Rev Fr Jerome Secillano, Executive Secretary of the CBCP Permanent Committee on Public Affairs, said,

“The lack of ‘water splashing’ should not dampen their fiesta spirit Fiesta, after all, is a joyous celebration of faith and not of some mundane cultural traditions or customs ”

We can fully embrace the spirit and joy of St John s feast day without disturbing the tranquility and comfort of others

We can make sure that everyone can take part in the celebrations in their own unique way by remaining mindful of others' limits and showing consideration for other people

The celebration experience can be enhanced for both attendees and spectators when a respectful and inclusive environment is promoted

The resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte as the secretary of

the Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) was no huge surprise for Filipinos

This action ultimately declares her exit from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr ’s Cabinet also suggesting the ending point of their 2022 electoral alliance, “Uniteam ”

The last two years in DepEd under Duterte has been left with poorly planned projects an alarming performance in global education assessments and still underdeveloped school facilities

Suddenly those high expectations of her supporters faded away further causing a rift between supporters of Marcos and Duterte

Critics from right to left, Duterte’s time as DepEd secretary was filled with remarks of experts and dismay of the public to which she put an end to by red-tagging A leading example was from 2023 when she received criticisms because of her P150 million confidential funds proposal She clarified that the funds will be used for security and surveillance since sexual grooming, terrorism recruitment, and drug use of DepEd personnel are prevalent during these times, however, these issues are far from the central problem of education

Gabriela Representative Arlene Brosas pointed out in a senate hearing statement “Kulang tayo sa classrooms kulang tayo sa upuan kulang tayo sa textbook learning tapos maglalagay tayo ng confidential funds na hindi naman natin maa-account ”

Duterte had only 3 673 classrooms built in 2023 which is half of the 6 000 classrooms target still quite far from the 159 000 shortage Even with a a P17 billion budget for classroom construction this 2024 the progress remained slow

After the continued opposition towards the confidential funds, Duterte ignited a heated defense over this, calling those who oppose as “enemies of peace.”

But peace is no where to be found if public officials do not disclose how the nation’s tax is spent

Bayan secretary Gen Renato Reyes describes Sara’s defensive statements as a mirror to her “fascist mindset” for not accepting criticism on lack of transparency Fortunately the confidential funds proposal was no longer pursued as it only caused disruption among Filipinos

If the DepEd secretary herself is a misfit for the job, expect that whoever she appoints also have no background in education

There were two former military officials who were assigned beside her position in DepEd overlooking the administrative strand The former commander of the Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division Major General Nicolas Mempin had a P80 000 monthly salary as a confidential “technical consultant” before Sara positioned him as the undersecretary

Meanwhile, Sara’s assistant secretary, Brigadier General Noel Baluyan, used to be an assistant division commander of the 3rd Infantry Division Basically, ever since Marcos crushed Sara’s dream to be in the defense, she has been projecting a military setting in DepEd

If one wants to see the outcomes of Duterte’s actions in reshaping the Philippine educational curriculum, take a glance at the 2023 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) that revealed a worrisome result In a total of 81 countries, the Philippines ranked 71st

According to the data released by DepEd 15-year old Filipinos were not able to reach the minimum level of proficiency for Science Reading and Mathematics

How come there is still no significant progress from the academic performance of Filipino students, despite promises of revising the system?

In a senate hearing for the PISA results, multiple senators raised certain issues and faults in a classroom setting that affected the outcomes of the assessments

Learning topics has been accustomed to memorization making it difficult to answer real life applications and problem solvings in an assessment like PISA

Former DepEd director for curriculum and development Joyce Andaya states that formative tests must be implemented in the learning scenarios inside the classroom

Andaya recalls how the K to 12 curriculum focuses on cognitive demands But still the Philippines has been on the below average streak for years now suggesting that the curriculum needs its revisions

This is already a pressing issue even before Sara entered office yet until now 15 year old Filipinos still have low reading comprehension

The Matatag curriculum was a highlight from Duterte’s years in DepEd that aimed to do solutionize the global assessment problem This is now being implemented in pilot schools hoping to tackle the deficiencies of learners in literacy and numerical literacy

The newly revised K to 10 curriculum is defined as “less congested” as it reduces the subjects and lessons taught from K to 12

Yet, studies declare otherwise, as found by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) and Philippine Institute of Development Studies, there is said to be “ no statistical difference” in the percentage of expected competencies to gain between pilot schools of Matatag curriculum and non-pilot schools

In Duterte’s final promises, she plans to review and make revisions to the K to 12 curriculum, however her resignation might’ve suggested that won’t happen any longer

In light of all the dismal actions made by Duterte she was able to put an end to the additional administrative work of teachers in their respective institutions

To do this 5 000 will be hired for the necessary administrative work along with maintenance and other operating expenses In addition to that she also initiated compensation for overworked teachers

We want to ensure that our teachers are rightfully compensated for hours of actual classroom teaching beyond the 6-hour limit provided under the Magna Carta for teachers, Duterte stated

The former secretary admits how she felt guilty that she cannot freely release plans and enforce actions since her knowledge in education is limited Through the assistance of educational experts, she waits for their own review before she initiate actions

Even Duterte herself admitted that she isn t fit or well prepared for this position yet she is assigned here It must ve taken a lot of confidence and greed to accept a job you aren t 100% capable of even knowing how much of a waste it would be for the people you will serve

As for Filipino youth, the core mandates of DepEd, it is their right to not just receive quality education but also be heard

There are still underskilled teachers in the Philippines that require thorough guidance and trainings

One goal the department can focus on is closing the gap among private and public institutes

These schools do not have the equal amount of quality facilities and commendable teachers

IF THERE COULD BE CONSISTENT TRAINING PROGRAMS AND TEACHING DEMONSTRATIONS IMPLEMENTED FOR FREE TEACHERS WILL LEARN HOW TO REACH HIGHER IN THEIR CAREER

IF FACILITIES ARE FUNDED CONTINUOUSLY AND EQUIPMENT IS UPDATED REGULARLY STUDENTS GET TO EXPERIENCE PRACTICAL WORK OFTEN AND HAVE MORE INTERACTIVE LEARNING INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Now that Duterte is out of the picture, the educational system of the Philippines can say “good riddance” to incompetent leaders

The newly assigned secretary for DepEd was applauded since Sen Sonny Angara was seen to give hopes for strong and effective reforms

Still, it all depends upon what the future global assessments will turn out, whether funds are spent properly and displayed for the public, and how much of a development will Angara do for every Juan s education

Wreaching P15.8 trillion as of February 2024 it is wise that every centavo from Filipino taxpayers hard-earned money be spent on purposeful expenditures

There are countless integral areas in Filipinos’ lives that are in dire need for invention and innovation such as healthcare job opportunities housing public transportation and food allocation

However as if to spite the people and taxpayers in the face the government instead chooses to allocate billions of its budget on avertible projects citing the most recent case of the New Senate Building (NSB)

On June 10, the newly appointed Senate President Chiz Escudero expressed his shock upon learning that the needed amount to complete the upper chamber’s new home in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig would be P23 billion

This is a huge leap in amount given that the alleged initial cost only amounted to P8.9 billion as per Senator Alan Peter Cayetano the new chairman of the committee on accounts

Upon further requests by the Senate President to probe the ballooning costs of the infrastructure the construction of phase 3 was put into a halt and senate investigations are currently underway

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and an October 2023 document obtained by Rappler, 77% of Phase 1 amounting to P8.9 billion is completed

This accordingly only entails the core and shelf of the building including glass windows and elevators Phase 2 amounting to P2 5 billion is 18% completed which encompasses the tiles ceiling works other elevators generator sets fire protections and escalators Phase 3 which is yet to be obligated and includes works to complete is said to cost P10.33 billion

The grand total indicated in the document was only P21.73 billion and not P23 billion which was the root cause behind Senator Cayetano and Senator Binay s heated argument during the recently conducted public hearing by the senate committee on accounts

Senator Nancy Binay the previous chairman of the committee on accounts insisted that there was no P23 billion amount on the DPWH’s documents

However, Senator Cayetano insisted that the computation should include the land acquisition cost, which is an additional P1.6 billion

No matter how deep the senate probes into the matter, it is still imprudent to spend billions of the national budget into building an impractical and extravagant infrastructure, especially for a country who is struggling financially

The plan to acquire a senate’s own building has been going on for nearly two decades Overall it is a practical and sustainable plan especially since the senate has been renting its office space from the GSIS and its parking space from the SSS amounting to a total of P170.4 million per year

What makes it highly questionable however are the excessive cost size and location

Choosing BGC where property values reach almost P1 million per square meter is completely unnecessary There are other prime locations in Manila that could cost less than the extravagant Fort Bonifacio

There are other prime locations in Manila that could cost less than the extravagant Fort Bonifacio Furthermore, Senator Panfilo Lacson initially suggested building the costly NSB in 2017 due to the need for additional space and modern facilities

These massive structures were constructed in anticipation of accommodating 65 senators aligned with the Duterte administration's proposed shift to a federal system of government An overshoot of 41 people in its capacity given that these senators also have their own employees is overkill

On the other hand the lavish design and massive budget allotted for the project could be a way to cover up corruption behind the curtains

According to recent reports, the ₱3 1 billion spent on the first phase of the building s construction was classified as a lump sum, exempting it from detailed auditing

This classification heightens suspicions of extensive irregularities in the procurement of materials and other aspects It adds to the suspicion that its main contractor is Hilmarc s Construction Corporation the same company that was involved with the overpriced P2.3 billion Makati City Hall in 2014

Without proper checks and balances, the NSB can actually be an avenue for politicians to commit corruption – a diversion tactic under the guise of progress

It is deeply concerning how those in power can easily acquire what they want using the taxes that common citizens worked so hard to earn

While these politicians indulged in grand interior high-tech facilities and basement parking capable of accommodating 1 200 private vehicles Filipinos struggle with substandard public infrastructures increasing commodities’ prices poor public healthcare and education among others

Public funds are public for a reason. As taxpayers of this country, every citizen has the right to demand, as taxes are meant to benefit the society, not just the select.

Ttheir seniors as they shared they college applications journey online

New posts refresh from one online group to another with 5 to 30 applications, they state how many schools they passed and their experience from each of it

The College Entrance Tests (CET) are exams taken from private and public state universities in the Philippines as an entry key for the school The scope and style of these tests vary per university as it requires a thorough application process before receiving a test permit

Common CETs taken in the country are the University of the Philippines College Admissions Test (UPCAT)

Ateneo College Entrance Test (ACET), University of Santo Tomas Entrance Test (USTET), De La Salle University College Admissions Test (DCAT), and local state universities also have an entrance exam For scholarships there is the Department of Science and Technology Merit Scholarship, Commission on Higher Education Merit Scholarship and more scholarship programs provided by businesses schools and the government

Some of the incoming seniors who are in the starting mark of their college application season continue to grow anxious feelings if they will have successful outcomes as well

Worry no more CET and Scholarship Test takers, this article is well prepared with tips and suggestions from four entrance exam and scholarship test qualifiers

Meet the graduated seniors from Centro Escolar Integrated School of Malolos who are en route for their dream Mr Roi Edan Victoria Ms Precious Sabine Pinto Ms Francine

Dianne Cardenas and Ms Jada Kalia

Aquino Get to hear their own stories and advice from their college applications journey

Review Centers, Materials, and Resources

Francine enrolled in a review center but she weighs in a stronger weapon in preparation for the exams which is building a foundation This helped her the most since stock knowledge can be your buddy in understanding the concepts on various subjects under the coverage of the exam

While for Jada’s review center experience, she described it as counter-productive since she wasn t able to absorb information consistently

Despite that she reminds that the student must know if they can fully commit to reviewing If you know you can, then a review center would be beneficial

Best Time to Prepare

According to Roi two to four weeks can be enough for those who are not fully confident yet

In the case of multiple CETs scattered throughout the year

Precious suggested that UPCAT review should be done for at least two months

USTET and ACET review can also be inserted during summer break since the both happens during the academic year, DCAT review can be done during Christmas break and lastly she stated that she took five days before the DOST Scholarship Test to review

Review Techniques and Tips

A review technique to do when you don t have an idea how to start is by using Roi’s suggestion of a modified pomodoro This can start up the engine in your head review

The timer can be turned off when you re finally in a consistent focus mode A lot of social media apps and websites offers numerous mock tests that you just have to find

Precious recommends taking them with a timer to assess the speed and accuracy

Francine states, It is impossible for you to learn or review everything in a short period of time which is why she suggests to focus on the general basics since it ll contribute to long term memory In addition to that she introduces her own method called “freezing.” According to her “ you stop reviewing hours or days before the exam to avoid too much information flooding your mind The goal of this technique is to improve concentration and retain important concepts

Keeping that in mind Jada suggests to focus on those you have difficulty in mastering

Exam Tips: UPCAT

The UPCAT is known for utilizing a right minus wrong checking system wherein four mistakes will cost you a one point deduction

Roi introduces two methods in approaching the exam; In a playsafe method you are free to leave some answers blank

When you ’ re not feeling confident on your answers in a few items leaving them blank is your shot to avoid deductions and keep track of time As for the gambler method, you use the process of elimination

In general you will answer all the items by making an educated guess, in which there is a risk that you may get deducted According to him, one should commit to only one test-taking method and not combine the two

Additionally it is not advised to stay too long on one item

Precious shares a general tip when you want higher chances of getting into UP which is to choose one National Capital Region campus and one provincial campus

For instance, Precious chose ManilaLos Banos She also added how there are deadly combos in campus choices because they vary University Predicted Grade (UPG) to which these combos often have the highest cutoffs making it competitive

In the aspect of motivation Precious clarifies that if you re really confident with your grades and exam results feel free to choose them

During Jada s UPCAT she wasn't able to finish the last sub-test because of lack of time For the other CETS there were questions at the end that she wasn t able to read so she ended up guessing them From this experience she advises eliminating pressure while taking the CETs, further discussing how if your mind is at ease, it would be easier for you to understand and think clearly

Just do what you can do do your best, and always keep in mind the time limit

Francine highlights how it is important to “be mindful of your progress.” She explains that difficult items don’t need too much attention, it s best to skip it and return to it when you still have time

Exam Tips: USTET

Precious explains that Fail one fail all rule is applied in the USTET If one subtest failed to make the passing score it ll result to a rejection

The subtests include Science Math, English, and Mental Ability, though there are other subtest depending on the program you chose it is important to get a good foundation of every subtest she added

Exam Tips: ACET

The blue school might just be your dream school, here are tips coming from Precious

Since there is no Science portion in the exam it is essential that the student is well exercised in reading heavy and long passages From her own experience, Precious recalls a subtest called Analogies which makes you answer 25 items in five minutes CET TIPS PAGE 11

his is how thousands of teenagers viewed the posts of

Exam Tips: ACET

It is better to cross out the correct answer instead of fully shading it because shading is time-consuming She also highlights the important of the application essay in which you must introduce yourself in a way they’d get a impressionable mindset and express your willingness to study there Lastly she states that If the committee reintroduces essay writing during the examination, write a standard introduction-bodyconclusion while keeping it engaging

Exam Tips: AtBulSU

Precious advises to use your time wisely when taking AtBulSU since it has no time limit for each subtest

Exam Tips: DCAT

During the exam there was a short break in between where you can go to the comfort room and use your phone According to Precious, you can maximize this break to take a breather go to the washroom and eat your snacks

Additionally DCAT has a Statistics subtest which is why it is important to refresh your knowledge on the subject

Exam Tips: DOST

Your knowledge in Science should determine your performance here as it's the subtest with the most items

Precious reminds that if you re planning to take a DOST scholarship be sure that your desired program is accredited by DOST Don't let this chance slip by especially if you re gonna enter the field of medicine

Final Words of Advice

In the final part of the interview each of them gave their final messages Roi finishes off his interview with a reminder to stay calm and it s fine to think twice if needed and he concludes it with a final statement “take the risk ”

Precious also has her list of messages to share; first is that manifestation works wonders if and only if you also put hard work in things that you do second when application period starts it is much more easier if the requirements was prepared beforehand third check the curriculum in choosing a program be certain that you ’ re interested in studying the subjects, and fourth, feel free to apply for more than one schools and most importantly scholarships

The best case scenario according to her is applying for one school-funded one government-funded and one company-funded scholarships

And finally if the odds ever are in your favor her final advice is to consider many factors in choosing the university that you’ll enroll in such as the excellence and performance at board exams, lodging options, and finances

Francine ends her interview with a quote that says you may not always get the result that you want, but at least you have no regrets about not taking the risk ”

From there we can pick up something better than rejection, which is the continuous push to try again

Jada sends off a warm greeting to enjoy this first step of adulthood and make the most out of it since it will only be experienced once

Sooner than later this phase will be over and the first day at college will come knocking at our doorstep For whatever dream failed to seize, there s always another path you are meant to go

You’ve finally set your mindset now don’t let this word echo your heart and mind in the next years of your life;

“Padayon.”

The Sandcastle Dreams

“What is your dream?”

The question we all have once heard from our

loved ones teachers or anyone in particular

Four words yet are not answerable by one I believe dreams are divided into two: the dreams we had as a kid and the ones we have now

The dreams we shared with our parents when we were at the young age of 5 or 6 are often seen as impossible and unattainable

Remember what yours were? Mine were: to be an astronaut living in space to be a celebrity with a pink car traveling around the world, and to live in a house with infinite rooms of stuff and playgrounds–all at once

These are the dreams I excitedly shared whenever asked who I wanted to be when I grew up The dreams that seem to fade away as we grow up

While the dreams we have now are sometimes pursued for practicality

Those dreams we have that are not known to fend for one s needs are merely splashed away like sand when waves crash the shore

They touch the mind but will never stay as if nothing would ever allow them to be considered

And some dreams evoke the feeling of coming back home The warm feeling of reaching your dream after the bumpy path you ’ ve taken

Those dreams that are like the salt of the ocean – ingrained in you as if you ’ ve carried them your whole life

Despite any odds, you re determined to make them a reality just like building a sandcastle

Even though you know it will crumble when the waves hit you still want to build it – because who would not want to see a well-crafted sandcastle with all its defined windows and a waving flag on top?

Like Lola Filipina Adele Balite who despite the failures and uncertainties decided to pursue her lifelong dream at the age of 84

In 1982, Lola Filipina took the Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination (CPALE) in the hope of achieving a ticket towards accounting

byWendyAmorPineda

Unfortunately, the stars did not align with her

She then worked as a bookkeeper for years and never got the chance to take the board exam again but Lola Filipina never once relinquished her aspirations At the age of 84 Lola Filipina strived again She seizes the opportunity of taking the CPALE for the second time

She happily accepted a scholarship offered to her because she wanted to pursue her dream of becoming an accountant

Unfortunately she failed to pass for the second time But the burning fire within her will not be soon snuffed out as this failure did not stop her from chasing her dream further Lola Filipina still plans to take the next CPALE until her dream unfolds right in her eyes

"If you cannot make it, go ahead. Kuha ulit. Dapat tuloy lang,” - Lola Filipina

In this vast world amidst the ebb of society and the growing population pursuing one ’ s dreams may seem daunting

But remember dreaming itself is always within one s grasp Chasing aspirations may sometimes be a luxury beyond our reach but we must never give up

Cliche as it sounds but life is not a race – our dreams will patiently await us Dream all you want and seize them when you are capable enough

Life can feel like a broken record at times, replaying

again and again the same painful melody of missed opportunities, broken promises, and regrettable choices

These create a lingering bitterness in our life serving as constant reminders of what could have been

But within this cacophony of regret, a fragile hope shines through the possibility of a second chance

"Areyouwillingtogive it your all for the chanceofanewstart?"

Ten minutes, the only given time for you to meet someone from the past again Ten minutes to tell them everything you ’ ve been wanting to tell But after that you have to live with all the lingering loneliness and what-ifs because nothing will change Even if you cry your heart out or plead –nothing will change Will you still take the chance?

Ifyoucouldgoback, whowouldyouwantto meet?

Would you want to meet your best friend from 10 years ago?

The one you shared your little secrets with The one you run to when everything gets tough Would you go back and rekindle all the memories you have shared? All the little talks under the moonlit night

And the whispers and giggles while talking at the back of the class Then in a snap everything changed Everything was gone

The one you once promised you would spend your life with even giving them a space in your own house – just in case they would be kicked out of their own house

Would you want to meet them again and hug them tighter? Telling them how much you miss them and what you could give up just to have them back But then, nothing will change They would still slip away from your fingertips nonetheless

Orwouldyourather meetyourmotherwhen shewasstillatyour age?

16 and enjoying her life to the fullest as if her whole life was meticulously planned The kind and sweet girl who loves to look at the flowers blooming outside while wearing this beautiful summer hat given by her mother

A lovely girl with these eyes that turns into a crescent moon whenever she sees dogs passing by not minding how it could be possible for them to bite her A carefree one What would you say if you had met her?

Whispers of Yesterday, Dreams of Tomorrow

That her cooking is one of the best food you have ever tasted even though sometimes it lacks spices and such? Would you tell her you love how she takes care of and fends for your needs? Would you finally tell her that you love her? But nothing will change still

Even if you had told her all these things, in the present she would still think that you hate her cooking as you were never an outspoken child

Ifyoucouldrewind back time, where wouldyousteerthe chancegiventoyou?

I have never been a fan of recalling the past That relentless feeling of longing for the what-ifs and lingering almosts A devastating yet comforting sensation that makes you shiver But I would be lying if I say I have never reminisced about the past

How countless of what-ifs never crossed my mind every single day

How scenes from years ago never played inside my brain like a historical and somehow comedic film that seeks a good ending

Maybe, it was human nature after all how we constantly yearn for second chances

The human nature that craves redemption We yearn to rewrite the past to mend fences and to reclaim connections that have frayed We see this desire manifest across generations from the child desperately seeking forgiveness for a broken toy to the adult longing to reconnect with a loved one after years of estrangement

Despite our best efforts life does not have a convenient pause button – we cannot simply hit rewind Time marches forward and the consequences of our actions can leave permanent scars Some bridges may be burned beyond repair and people may have moved on leaving the space they once occupied in our lives that can never be filled again

The concept of second chances is not just about the interpersonal relationships that we have It extends to the missed opportunities and unfulfilled dreams Oh, how it reminds me of the unimaginable dreams my best friend and I once shared under the scorching heat The dream of spending our days going around the world

While wasting all the evenings talking about the difficulties faced in the corporate world And picturing how happy both our mothers would be if they got the chance to live their dreams just like how we got the chance to become who we are today

Wemaynotbeable torelivethepast,but wecanlearnfromit.

The strong desire for a second chance can have a powerful hold over our thoughts and actions

It acts as a driving force that pushes us toward personal growth and self-improvement

When we acknowledge and learn from our past mistakes, we open ourselves up to transformation and development

Regret, despite its painful definition, can motivate us to make meaningful changes in our lives We become more mindful of our actions, cultivate healthier relationships, and make choices that align with our values

lDoesactionspeak ouderthanwords?

Even the fact that we tried our best, the decision to offer a second chance ultimately lies with the one who was hurt

Second chance is a gift, freely given, and can never be demanded, despite the relationship that the person used to have with us

It requires more than just mere words Some may choose to embrace reconciliation, while others may find closure in letting go

Respecting their choice regardless of how difficult it may be is an essential part of the process Therefore I firmly believe that action without words is just simply confusing and at the same foolish

To dream is to embracechanges. Many people would say that once the sun gleams it symbolizes new beginnings

The path to second chances is never easy

It requires humility courage and a commitment to selfimprovement A gentle reminder that we are not defined by our mistakes

With a willingness to learn a sincere desire to change and a touch of hope we can rewrite the soundtrack of our lives transforming the echoes of regret into a melody of redemption

After all, life is meanttobelived.

“Am I really ready for this?” she wondered, her gaze lingering on the rooms that had witnessed countless school dramas.

The hallways, once bustling with footsteps and whispered secrets,

now stretched out before her like an uncharted map

Chairs rooms and physics notes these were the artifacts of her high school days but beyond those walls lay a new world waiting to be explored

Moving the tassel of her cap from right to left, symbolizing a gesture marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another

Her mind is thinking too much contemplating the journey ahead of her college life with all its promises and uncertainties

College the word echoed like a distant thunderstorm It carried the weight of independence and the fear of the unknown

Too many questions in her mind: “What is it really like to be a college student? Will I find my place? Will I succeed?”

For years older people have been saying that college is for selfdiscovery and personal growth You ll find your passion, assuring her

“You will explore new ideas and meet great friends.” But amidst the excitement, doubts kept on disturbing her

Was the course she had chosen a right fit? Late nights were spent poring over social media as she compared majors and seeking advice from teachers and seniors

As the graduation ceremony concluded the student stepped out into the air She felt a mix of optimism and trepidation

She may not know exactly what lies ahead but for sure she is excited to embrace the challenges and opportunities that awaits them on this new academic frontier

After all, isn't that what life is all about taking risks pursuing your passions, and daring to dream big?

And so, with a deep breath, she stepped beyond the corridors, leaving behind the familiar and embracing the uncharted

The rain began to fall but it felt different now refreshing, like the promise of growth

College life awaited, and she was ready to write her own story one filled with courage, resilience, and the magic of discovery

And so, if you ’ re reading this and you ’ re contemplating college life

My dear reader, if you find yourself at the threshold of college, remember this: Life is an adventure, and the journey beyond the corridors is where you’ll find your truest self.

Yet, uncertainty lingered like a stubborn shadow.
As the droplets danced on her graduation gown she knew that this was her moment

“Maybe that’s what happens when you grow up, you feel less joy”

Since the release of Inside Out 2 on June 14, 2024, social

media has been buzzing with references to the film like spoilers Having not seen it yet I was curious about a trending line delivered by the character Joy

But is this truly the case? Does growing up steal our childhood Joy or do we simply forget the ways we used to embrace happiness?

Inside Out 2 provides a comforting experience for those who watched the first film released in 2015 It effectively captures the roller-coaster emotions of Riley as a kid when her family moved to a new place

In the sequel, we see Riley as a teenager reflecting the development of the film s original audience It seems as though the creators may have intentionally waited for us to grow up before creating the sequel

This shared experience allows the movie to delve deeper into the complexities of growing up exploring the internal struggles that we teenagers face through the lens of Riley's emotions

After watching the movie, I was surprised to realize that it was made for kids The film s brilliance lies not just in personifying emotions but in portraying them as a nuanced and interconnected system

As the film goes beyond the original cast of emotions introducing a new generation of Riley's inner-world emotions Envy with her sickly green hue, embodies the yearning for what others possess

Embarrassment a blushing mess of pink represents the selfconsciousness that consumes many teenagers

In addition to that there's Ennui a world-weary embodiment of apathy and sarcasm

Last but not the least is the introduction of Anxiety showing how it can distort self-perception and create a chaotic inner world

The way the film portrayed the complexity of human emotions was truly remarkable It perfectly captured the depth of our inner experiences in a way that words cannot fully convey

That one part in the movie where Riley had a panic attack resonated with me even bringing me to tears

Especially when Riley's selfperception shifts from "I'm a good person " to "I'm not good enough " it powerfully shows how anxiety can impact our lives

It affects everything from friendships and belonging to even creating worries about nonexistent problems The most heartbreaking thing is that we can lose sight of who we truly are

Riley s mind had become a whirlwind Her emotions wrestled with a suffocating wave of anxiety Joy, once the leader of Riley s inner world had tirelessly fought to calm both the frantic Riley and the oppressive Anxiety

Realization sinks into Joy as she then remembers that she used to do the same thing like tossing the bad memories of Riley so that it will not develop into Riley’s sense of self She then reminded Anxiety, with her voice raw with emotion, We don t get to choose who Riley is."

It s like a gentle reminder for all of us about how our life experiences both good and bad shape who we become

Whether we ' re young or old everything we go through adds to the amazing story of our lives and makes us us Our memories with all their mixed-up emotions and lessons altogether define what are we that makes us beautiful human beings

Remember the powerful scene in Inside Out where Joy tells Sadness that Riley needs her?

Later in the movie the dynamic shifts As Sadness tells Joy that Riley wants her This wonderful and beautifully crafted scene symbolizes the film's message that as we grow older we learn to control our emotions not the other way around

At the end of the day all our emotions are part of us Look closer and you ll see hints of other emotions within each character's design Joy s hair has a touch of Sadness blue, and Disgust s scarf carries a hint of Fear s purple

We have the right to feel them all, as long as they re needed at the moment we re experiencing Bottling them up isn't healthy; all emotions are valid True joy comes from embracing them all even the hardest ones not just the ones we perceive as "positive."

Inside Out 2 isn't just simply a coming-of-age story it's a celebration of beauty inside the messy growth It reminds us that growing up doesn't mean losing joy, but rather it is about finding the courage to persevere through challenges and rediscover joy in the smallest things, even amidst the inevitable storms of life After all, isn't that what makes our life so rich and our stories so worth telling?

exercises Picture the graduation ceremony not as a bittersweet ending, but as a metamorphosis

Picture a stage not just for past achievements but also for igniting passion and fire for the future In the hushed air of the venue a voice echoes out

Precious Sabine Pinto valedictorian of senior high school batch 2023 - 2024 Centro Escolar Integrated SchoolMalolos wasn t just a typical graduation speaker Her words of gratitude soared beyond awards and plans for the future It was woven with threads: gratitude kindness and a call to action

Pinto’s journey wasn’t an easy path that led her straight to the top of the class “I realized that true fulfillment lies beyond merit

I came to understand that the path meant for you will always be yours to walk she declared

It colored a painting of a student who, at first, dived headfirst to grab the golden star of academic achievement Along the way she discovered a richer treasure at the peak of the mountain: the value of personal growth She shared how she learned to embrace challenges as a guide, not as roadblocks that prevented her from reaching the summit

There was one golden but priceless thread that ran throughout her speech She had no hesitation in naming those who stood alongside her She spoke of the influence of her teachers and mentors of family and friends who were the wind beneath her wings

She spoke of The Escolarian, that the student publication wasn t just about journalism; it was about finding her voice and fueling her drive to pursue journalistic excellence during her two-year stay in the organization

As she mentioned specific individuals one thought should come to mind: the acknowledgment of the village it takes to raise a successful student

Pinto s vision however expanded beyond the bounds of academics “As we approach adulthood our perspectives have matured We are no longer wide-eyed freshmen but discerning young adults.”

It was a powerful call to arms urging her fellow graduates to have a social responsibility challenging them to become the voices and ears of the unheard

Her words were heavy with the weight of the ongoing struggles in Palestine, Congo, Sudan, and Yemen

The silence that engulfed the air underscored the gravity of her message: this was a commencement not just for academic excellence not just for academia but a tool for the world that needs compassion and action

The final thread Pinto had woven into her speech was kindness Knowledge can open doors but only kindness unlocks hearts Always be gentle and remember that kindness goes a long way for with understanding comes compassion in carrying unseen burdens ” she spoke with confidence

It was a simple yet earnest message a memorandum that genuine success goes beyond academic recognition

Pinto finished her remarks with a flourish and a lighthearted metaphor

With a nod toward her past experiences she said that leaving CEIS felt like leaving a scorpion s lair But now she was flying into Ateneo's blue nest - a knowledge and opportunity haven

Pinto took a more solemn turn pledging her loyalty to the principles of science and virtue ready to stretch her wings and achieve greatness wherever fate takes her

There was a strong sense of purpose in the last few words she spoke She declared “Everything I do I do Pro amor omnibus Deo et patria – for love of everything, God, and country."

Despite their time in this beloved institution coming to an end wherever their path takes them the future is not something to wait for it s something one should create With wings outstretched and hearts ablaze, they are ready to take flight

Rand wool, or even just to keep company

It’s not that hard either with only a few simple steps you too can raise your very own flock The value of keeping such livestock is dependent on the shepherd

In many cases, raising sheep has been known to be a means of income generation or self-sustenance, in any case, however, it was done for survival

Before procuring livestock the first step is to set up a good pasture Make sure that the sheep will have plenty of space to breathe and graze

They should be able to explore freely without bumping with one another as that creates conflict for resources

Turn the space into something livable, mold the earth and give it form Put in a little pond if you can afford the space, allowing geese and ducks to glide over the water

It is of utmost importance that the water and the earth be separated Spread trees and plants onto the pasture

Make sure that it is good Give the flock proper shelter to keep them warm and dry during storms and heavy rain

Make sure they have all the resources they require to thrive: nutritious food and clean water

Provide them with posts that they can use to scratch at their skin and softwood to practice ramming the horns on their heads, should they choose to

Give a sheep everything it needs but make sure to keep it within closed borders

Nowadays shepherds typically use electrified fences or long spans of barbed wire

In the old days, shepherds mainly free roamed their sheep, raising guardian dogs with the animals to protect them from predators and herding dogs to keep the flock under control

Many raise sheep for money profiting from meat wool milk cheese and the likes It is crucial to maintain proper identification to flocks that they own This is why sheep are usually branded with tags on their ears or numbers burned into their horns and wool

ILLUSTRATEDBY ErvinRusselGalang

Shepherds who live near each other tend to see a few members of their flock moving to the others, sheep are herd animals and can easily be influenced by their own kind

Different breeds usually group together but breed mixing is often done to get many variations of certain products as some breeds are genetically more inclined to yield better tasting milk or softer wool

A good shepherd does not force the breeding of the herd nor hooking them up to tubes for sustenance

A sheep s every action should not be controlled, the animal maintains an individual stature; call it the gift of free will, albeit maintaining control with fixed borders and keeping track with permanent brands

The flock is managed as a united group with each follower reinforcing the other s obedience shared will if you will

Do not forget to keep track of the pecking order some shepherds even go out of their way and imprint on each and every lamb to reinforce its submission as a member of the flock

Keep in mind that the sheep are alive they can think though stripped of constitution equal to the shepherd

It is aware of the shackles forced upon it by its kin, some take their time to warn the others, but no matter what, the sheep continues grazing the grass as if barren lands exist outside the fence bordering the farmer’s land

If it does not see greener pastures then it assumes that all good exists only within their space

Do not forget to separate the rams from the ewes and lamb

A ram is cruel and unforgiving even a lamb not yet grown is not spared from endless violence and lust

If you do decide to mix them do not put multiple rams in the same spot they will often fight for resources as they fail to see its abundance on neighboring fields

Territory matters to these creatures; duels may result in death and that is contrary to the goal of making money and utilizing every bit of these creatures

Overpopulation is a common occurrence within a flock, when more resources are being consumed than allowed to regenerate Cull the sheep, reduce their numbers

Disobedient flocks must also be corrected, keep watch of their social hierarchies and subject the necessary members of the flock to butchery or drown them in gas chambers to force reorganization of the pecking order

You, as the shepherd, have the ability to restart your flock Do not forget, however, to use every bit of the sheep that you culled, hell, even use it as a lesson for other flocks; maybe sheep have lasting memories, who’s to say

Never forget your goal to use these animals for your own prospects You raised them for harvest, not family You built the borders around your land to keep them in check, you protected them so your investment would not be wasted

Affection was never your plan money is always will be In time you may choose to grow your business and increase efficiency mass farming is good but not just yet

For mass farming to work you must have absolute control of the entire flock leaving them with no ideas of breaking out or disobeying your laws

Sheep will always follow the shepherd but more than that they follow other sheep Influence is all that matters maybe you ll even attract wild sheep around your land into joining the flock

If your geography is optimal take advantage of migration patterns to capture and integrate feral sheep into your own flock

This might prove difficult however due to the difference in pecking order a possible solution is to obliterate the social hierarchies of wild sheep and introduce them one by one as a broken whole; observe united we stand divided we fall

The domestication of animals began in the wee days of agriculture as farmers were able to afford investing excess resources long-term for those that cannot be so easily acquired in such vast numbers

Society evolved and required a steady supply of resources without having to migrate seasonally this also meant that other organisms such as those used now in livestock had to adapt

Settlements chipped the natural habitats of indigenous species, leaving them but no choice than to embrace these new settlements as their new environments Both men and animals became co-dependent, others would say mutualism, wherein they both benefit- although I find it to be more of a mutual parasitic relationship-wherein in the end, with or without each other, both die

Why do both die in the end?

Simple Slowly, the shepherd and his brethren will have been molded to rely on this “ resource ” , unable to function without it, their system collapses

The sheep too would have evolved to be more pleasant to the shepherd needing it to survive unable to live without being sheared or else it cooks in its own coat

Man raised sheep and became obsessed with His creation that disobedience made Him punish with death and gore Yet, He has developed an addiction to the resources they yield, giving hope with a promise of sustenance and procreation, in exchange with their bodies

A promise that acted as fuel for illusions and obedience beyond biology A promise of water and spirit, to erase and wash away the shortcomings of the flesh

What is a shepherd without the sheep?

What are we without being who we are due to brutality? To raise them for food is one thing, but to harvest their very soul is a crime against the very will we were provided

We could, you know, reset the universe, but We don’t God is obsessed with this chaos, and man ceases to exist without His promise

His notion being redefined and interpreted in so many variations that made it impossible to make sense of Our reality

We are but a parasite to their flesh, and they are parasites feeding from our dependence

Let me put it this way, most of us are familiar with the phrase, “He made them in His image,” right? Now maybe, just maybe, They made Us in Theirs

aising sheep reaps many benefits such as mutton

Today’s society has reached this one point where - “Oh,

we ll just use Al for scripts or We ll just use Al for art or No worries Al can write this book or Oh Al could make this with ease

It s obvious that they have never stood in the middle of an art museum and felt moved to tears by a piece that somehow speaks to their soul despite them and the artist being separated by space and time They have never read a poem more than once Twice

Or three times - simply because the words make them feel like something is firing too close to them; because the words feel like a banging gun that s clanging behind their eyes

They ve never had to reach that point at the end of a horror movie and had to blink to their normal state, chuckling a little because they were unconsciously holding their breath

“Al can mimic emotion,” and “Oh, Al can mimic style ”

“You almost have no purpose left, kid AI can do it for you AI can mimic you ”

How can I explain that you can create an Al figure that perfectly mimics me You can use my work, my concepts, and everything else

You can spread it throughout the whole globe and profit from it - and I would still without a doubt continue to write my life away

I'm not sure if there's a term for it We learn in high school that how we feel about our art form is clichéd it's just like breathing Consistently every artist feels the same way

“I make art because it s either that or I cease to exist ” and “I write because I have to ” and “My music is how I communicate ” The brutality and quickness we mean behind it is like breathing to me comes out like a useless

understatement It is such a common experience not because the experience isn t genuine but rather because we can all relate to it and deduce it as a cliche

My motivation is not financial gain I’m not writing for a star on the ground somewhere in a city I've never been to

I am doing this because I started bringing notebooks on walks when I was seven years old

I am doing this because although trembling in fear I stood up in front of my entire class to read a poem I had written in second grade

I am doing this because I wrote down every emotion I had throughout high school I am doing it for myself the ten-year-old me the sixteen-year-old me and the me of today and how each version of myself was unable to put down their pens and papers

You can dissect and dismember me down to the subatomic level, but you will never be able to identify the source of how it began, because it is all a part of me

I kept on writing sad prose ever since I was a kid because I was a dramatic and lonely person and I felt that the only thing about me that was genuinely always true was that this is who I am

that the words cover everything envelop everything and bloom their tiny twilight arias into every crevice and alleyway

“We are going to replace you ” and that’s okay You think my writing is an attempt to make up for a void That my school’s student publication was recruiting new writers and I answered their Microsoft forms as an aspiring campus journalist

You think that one raindrop replaces another, but in my opinion, they are both still falling

You think that art has a place and that it just appears on walls when it s needed

You also think that art is flawless and simple to request You witness that a site online can do it for you and call it an easy masterpiece

And I witness a child drowning My purpose in writing is to build her a boat What was once a river raft has long since evolved into a fully rigged ship

I am writing because you can screw this out of my cold dead clammy hands and I'll still come back as a ghost and write poems about it

This isn’t even love

We probably use the word ‘passion’ the most as in obsession, need, or dedication

“Abracadabra” means “I will create as I speak” which is one of my favorite littleknown facts about the magic of artists We create because it drains us

Because our hands appear to be occupied in some way whenever we look down

Because it is our backbone our heartbreak and everything - because it was the first thing we ever knew

We create because the tired old cliché once more it is similar to breathing We create because we must

Unibersidad University of the Philippines Diliman

Tinterested in Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the first half of 2024

Linkee an AI powered software platform that specializes in Search Engine Optimizations (SEO) through link-building conducted a study utilizing data from Google Trends The study analyzed global trends regarding interest in AI tools, by examining the geostatistics of AI-related queries

The Philippines was determined as one of the countries with increased interest in AI tools alongside Singapore Canada, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Specifically, it ranked fourth during the first half of 2024 The country s ranking went one rank down from its initial third rank during the first quarter of this year maintaining its place in the top five alongside Singapore which maintained its dominance in the top rank

The results support the projections of a consistent rise in AI on a nationwide level Publicly available AI for queries generation and analytics can now be considered as one of the critical national interests promoting greater tech development and economic propulsion

Taking in mind that the total estimated internet users in the Philippines at the start of 2024 is 86 8 million it is suggested that each individual looked up AI three times this year Linkee notes the country’s obsession with AI as it grows in popularity

“The country adapts the new technologies, particularly in ‘ChatGPT’, with searches that surpass its population more than twice,” the study reads.

Google Trends speculate that Philippines ranking in AI search interest reflects the country’s “growing technological awareness economic aspirations educational initiatives, government support, and the global trend toward AI adoption ”

A separate study by Microsoft and LinkedIn titled AI at Work Is Here

Now Comes the Hard Part further grounds the reports from Google Trends

The study featured in the 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report, highlights the rapid adoption of AI in the workplace and underscores the increasing demand for AIliterate individuals by employers

ofexecutives preferhiring candidateswith AIskills. wouldhireless experienced candidateswithAI skillsovermore experiencedones of companies lack a clear AI adoption plan of AI-using employees bring their own tools, posing security risks.

Peter Masquera CEO of Microsoft Philippines said that: 2023 will be remembered as the year of AI but this year we will start to see real impact as we move from potential applications to living innovations” Various industries are moving towards great innovation using AI on a significant scale, embracing AI solutions to their challenges and priorities

86% of Filipino knowledge workers claimed to use AI at work significantly higher than the global average of 75%

Similarly, 89% of Filipino leaders believe that their company needs to adopt AI much higher than the global average of 79%

Counterintuitively only about 30% of Filipino AI users are likely to get training notably lower than the global average of 42%

The Philippines may be one of the countries most interested in AI but their applications in the corporate world is one behind on a global scale

Atul Harkinska Philippines Country Lead, LinkedIn, stated: “As the Philippines witnesses a transformative shift in the workplace due to AI, companies are realizing the need for a new talent playbook all industries are mobilizing to integrate AI into their workflows akin to the massive changes the has brought to the the market

Filipino knowledge workers demand innovation in the workplace heading toward higher efficiency rates that allow them to save time in their work In the tech industry AI now is used mostly to complete grunt work tasks that take a lot of time to complete but do not require a higher technical expertise to accomplish It is also being utilized in workflows, to create the foundation of algorithms and basic lines of code in which the programmer builds on to fit it to the required specifications

Employees want AI leaders are looking for a path forward,” written on the Work Trend Index Report

Those in education have also started using AI as an assistant to learn quicker through applications of learning theories and algorithms as well as taking a second more objective opinion or analysis of sets of data or strings

The issue lies, and always will lie in abuse of this technology Educators from Bulacan have reportedly shown concern in the faculty s inability to detect AI work failing to distinguish them from genuine outputs created by the students AI is evolving faster than safety measures can be created

Some suggest that the widespread use of AI might be a significant factor and speculate that educators may face challenges in preventing illicit use and distinguishing between genuine papers and those generated by AI

The forthcoming steps taken by the Philippines will determine its rank among the world's most innovative nations To take advantage of this situation and maximize productivity throughout the board for each and every industry, or to turn a blind eye and allow the enthusiasm of the masses to slowly fade away, decimating the momentum of Filipino knowledge workers in the paradigm of AI and automation - The Escolarian

Buckle Up! Climate Change is Making Air Travel Rougher

Oflight (SQ321) traveling from London to Singapore, tragically resulting in the death of a 73-year old man and injuring over 70 others on board

Many of the travelers were Singaporeans returning home Some were students studying in England While others were families and some who had planned a holiday to far-flung destinations such as Australia

After the 13-hour flight the aircraft reached the Bay of Bengal which is located between the Indian subcontinent and the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia Pilots often call this region notorious during this time of year due to turbulent monsoon rains

The aircraft encountered a sudden descent of over 1 800 meters causing passengers and objects to be thrown towards the cabin roof This incident marks the airline s first fatal incident in 24 years

The Sheffield School of Aeronautics reported that air turbulence primarily happens due to the changes in the atmosphere when different air masses collide each with different temperatures pressures or velocities This creates several wind patterns

Additionally turbulence can be affected by weather events such as thunderstorms geographical features such as mountain ranges and specific cloud formations

In recent years Earth s temperature has been constantly increasing Climate change results from both natural factors and mostly from human activities

Hand vegetables equipped with 170 odorant receptors that grant them an exceptional sense of smell

They rely on this sense to communicate within their hive and to identify various flowers while looking for food

Recent experiments from Michigan State University have shown that honeybees can detect lung cancer through their sense of smell

Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in the Philippines and the leading cause of cancerrelated deaths with 19 180 new cases reported in 2020

In the past years, it was known to scientists that animals can detect diseases through the smell For example, diabetic alert dogs warn their owners of dangerous blood sugar levels before they become critical

According to multiple UN reports a unison among thousands of scientists and government reviewers suggests that limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C is important to mitigate the most devastating impacts of climate change

However current projections indicate that temperatures could rise by 3°C by the end of the century

As a result climate change can impact air travel in various ways Increased heat leads to higher moisture levels in the air contributing to more frequent thunderstorms

Smoke from wildfires can disrupt aircraft navigation systems, which are not equipped to handle such conditions effectively

Extreme heat necessitates longer takeoff distances and times for planes due to increased gravitational resistance

Additionally, hotter air closer to the Earth’s surface can create “invisible turbulence”, which poses a risk even in clear skies

for passengers who are not belted in, especially when an unexpected clean-air turbulence occurs

“No one should avoid flying because of turbulence, but it is wise to keep your seat belt fastened at all times, except when you are moving around, as pilots do,” Professor Williams advised

Furthermore Doug Moss a former airline pilot and safety consultant reassured that modern planes are robust enough to withstand almost any turbulence

Ants can be trained to detect cancer in urine and dogs can learn to identify cancer from saliva samples

The researchers began by securing honeybees using wax and 3D-printed plastic harnesses They then applied electrodes to the part of the bees responsible for processing odors

Next, they exposed the bees’ antennae to various aerosolized mixtures, one mimicking compounds found in the breath of a lung cancer patient, and another resembling the breath of a healthy person

When exposed to these scents the bees brains generated distinct electrical signals Analyzing these signals allowed the researchers to distinguish between the two types of simulated breath with an accuracy of at least 93%

Debajit Saha a biomedical engineer at Michigan State University and coauthor of the study confirmed that bees could distinguish between the two types of synthetic breath even at very low concentrations

Scientists have observed a significant increase in reports of turbulence encounters, with many researchers suggesting that climate change is a key factor A study revealed that severe turbulence rose by 55% between 1979 and 2020 on a heavily busy North Atlantic route will increase clean-air turbulence in the future we now have evidence suggesting that the increase has already begun.”

Professor Paul Williams an atmospheric scientist at Reading University and co-author of the study said Following a decade of research showing that climate change

noted Bees can detect minute changes in chemical concentrations in the breath mixture down to the parts per billion range.”

Additionally the researchers conducted a separate experiment to determine if the bees could differentiate between two types of lung cancer – small-cell lung cancer which is rare and aggressive and non-small cell lung cancer The bees successfully passed this test as well

Looking ahead the researchers aim to conduct similar experiments using real breath samples from cancer patients

Nonetheless this discovery that honeybees can identify lung cancer offers a significant breakthrough for medicine It introduces a potential noninvasive and cost-effective method for early cancer detection and suggests broader applications in medical diagnostics This innovation could inspire new technologies and improve healthcare outcomes

Additionally Professor Williams pointed out that more turbulence is happening because there is a stronger wind shear in the jet stream – a fast moving air current high in the sky blowing from west to east above five to seven miles above the Earth’s surface (clean-air turbulence)

This jet stream forms mainly because of variations in temperature between the equator and the poles

Turbulent flights can be uncomfortable and occasionally lead to injuries

While cabin areas like overhead bins may sustain cosmetic damage, Moss explained that such issues do not compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft

In conclusion turbulence is a common occurrence during air travel and should not discourage people from flying

RMIND OVER MEDIA. Raymond Carlo Mendoza, the Area Lead for Languages at CEIS-Malolos, delivers a one-hour lecture to the graduating college students of Colegio de Calumpit Inc. during their recollection at the CCI gymnasium on July 25, 2024.

Carlo Mendoza,

languages in Centro Escolar Integrated School-Malolos and publication adviser of The Escolarian, led a one-hour talk in the recollection of graduating college students of Colegio de Calumpit Incorporated (CCI) in the CCI gymnasium on June 25, 2024

The talk began with statistics, studies show that around 60% of youths today are highly dependent on social media

Online platforms are great avenues of communication and information, however, they also pose significant risks to mental health

"According to recent studies, frequent social media use is linked to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness," Mendoza said, stressing the urgent need to address the issue

He mentioned that the most alarming aspect of social media is the prevalence of cyberbullying, noting that around 70% of users have encountered some form of online harassment The psychological repercussions of such an experience can be devastating especially in young minds

Online users must understand the importance of setting limits on social media usage Parents play an important role in guiding their children towards healthier social media habits

Teaching children about the significance of self-care and mental health is essential in teaching them to navigate the digital landscape responsibly

“It’s crucial to set boundaries on our social media use, like not using our phones during meals or before bedtime,” Mendoza advised

The speaker then asked the audience for strategies for healthy social media use The first step is to encourage users to be aware of how much time they spend online and its impact on their mental health mindfulness can help individuals understand and manage their digital consumption better

To combat high screen times, users can engage in activities such as reading, exercising, or spending time with their loved ones these activities can be more fulfilling and beneficial to developing minds

One must also set personal boundaries in their usage of social media, maintaining discipline and thus preventing addiction from the stimulation

an example of this is not engaging in social media during resting hours or conducting a digital detox now and again as suggested by a member of the audience

Mendoza introduced digital minimalism: "Practicing digital minimalism allows us to take control of our digital lives instead of letting technology control us "

The issue with digital minimalism is that most users have been shown to exhibit forms of FOMO or Fear of Missing Out The feeling of missing out on exciting events or experiences often leads to anxiety particularly in younger users

An audience member shared her thoughts on combatting FOMO: Siguro po we can focus on our own lives and stop comparing ourselves to others Madalas kasi we only see the highlights of other people’s lives on social media, so we need to remember that it’s not the whole picture,” she said

Practicing digital minimalism, being intentional with tech use, and maintaining specific times for social media use are good ways to combat FOMO

Mendoza ended the talk by highlighting the importance of being critical regarding things that can be observed online, prioritizing mental health over prioritizing mental health over superficial engagements such as likes and comments

“Mindful social media usage means being aware of how much time you are spending online and how it makes you feel,” he reminded

In a generation where digital interactions are increasingly prevalent, taking steps to protect and nurture our mental health is more important than ever

As we navigate the digital age let us prioritize our wellbeing and encourage healthier habits in ourselves and the next generation

Mendoza is one of the two speakers invited to talk at the KINAIYA 2024, kinaiya meaning “inner being that pertains to one s defining traits and qualities

The event had the theme “Level Up Gear Up: Bridge the Gap from Education to Employment KINAIYA is an annual event held during the graduating batch's recollection

Take care of your mental health, and remember that a balanced approach to social media can lead to a healthier, happier life.

In celebration of its 100th participation in the coveted

Summer Games, the Philippines reached a historic milestone as the world gets ready for the 2024 Olympics in Paris This century of victories, challenges, and steadfast dedication is evidence of the country's resilience in its pursuit of equality, unity, and sports

In 1924, the Philippines joined the family and participated in its first Olympic Games in Paris

During its inaugural appearance David Nepomuceno a sprinter from Albay was sent as the first and only delegate Although he participated in the 100 and 200-meter dashes he was not successful in earning a medal We can call it a déjà vu as he raised the Philippine flag in the City of Light and Love the site of this year's event The only Olympics that the Philippines has ever missed is the 1980 Moskva when it boycotted the games in Moscow Russia in protest of Russia's invasion of Afghanistan that same year under the leadership of the United States Additionally since the year 1972 the nation has participated in five Winter

Olympic Games The International Olympic Committee has recognized the Philippines as a member since 1929 Filipino athletes have excelled in a variety of sports during the past century winning medals setting records and motivating new generations of athletes

Along the way, there have been many noteworthy successes, such as weightlifter Hidilyn DiazNaranjo's first-ever Olympic gold medal from the Philippines at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics A 97-year gold medal drought was broken by this historic victory, which also raised the bar for Filipino athletes With the exception of medals earned in demonstration sports like bowling, where Paeng Nepomuceno represented the nation, which were not included in the official medal count, a total of twelve athletes, with the likes of Teofilo Yldefonso, Onyok Velasco, Miguel White, and more, have won 14 medals for the Philippines at the Summer Olympics However, the nation has never won a medal at the Winter Olympics Silver and bronze medals in boxing, swimming, weightlifting, and athletics are among these noteworthy achievements demonstrating the nation’s resilience noteworthy achievements demonstrating the

nation's resilience and competitive spirit

Currently, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is working relentlessly with numerous sports federations and organizations to ensure that athletes receive the most effective training, support, and resources As the Philippines prepares for its centennial appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the concentration is on building on previous accomplishments while reaching new heights According to a recent update, Filipino Olympiads are presently in Metz, France, receiving rigorous training in a variety of disciplines including weightlifting, boxing, and gymnastics With a methodical strategy to athlete development and a renewed emphasis on sports science and technology, the goal is not just to compete, but to excel and win more medals

The journey to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics was not easy Many excellent contenders attempted to qualify for the Olympics but were unsuccessful For example headlines were made when Hidilyn Diaz-Narajo the first and only Filipino gold medalist failed to make an Olympic comeback as she was surpassed by fellow Filipina Elreen Ando who will now represent our country in

Diaz-Naranjo's class Another runner has been eliminated since Kristina Knott was unable to make back-to-back performances at the Summer Games bringing the final roster to 22 Filipinos And most heartbreakingly Gilas Pilipinas did not fully shoot the hoops as they failed to proceed to the finals of the International Basketball Association (FIBA) Olympic Qualifying Tournament losing 71-60 against Brazil on July 6 hence ending their Olympic dreams

Despite those heartbreaking losses, the Philippines has managed to qualify 22 Filipinos for the Olympic Games, the country's largest contingent to date since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics These sportsmen have demonstrated that Filipino resilience will remain high and strong as they raise the flag for 119 million Filipinos in Paris on July 26

Let's take a look at the 22 Filipino Olympiads competing for gold and to watch out for at the forthcoming Paris 2024:
