BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD

Japanese playwrighter Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s “Before the Coffee Gets Cold” is a poignant and heartwarming tale set in a small, tuckedaway Tokyo café which offers patrons a unique opportunity - the chance to travel back in time. But there is a catch for anybody bold enough to take advantage. They must return before their coffee gets cold. Through four interconnected stories, the novel explores themes of love, regret and the desire to change the past.

What we found so encapsulating about this book was its blend of magical realism with deep emotional resonance, offering readers a gentle reminder of the fleeting nature of time and the importance of needing to live in the moment - something we could all do with being reminded of occasionally. Perfect for anyone who enjoys a thoughtful and reflective read.

SAUSAGE GOCHUJANG RIGATONI

This sausage gochujang rigatoni is a personal favourite of ours. It is a delicious twist on a classic pasta dish, bringing together the comforting flavours of Italian cuisine with a spicy Korean kick. The rich, savoury sausage pairs perfectly with the bold, umami-packed gochujang, resulting in a sauce that is both hearty and exciting - top with some fried panko breadcrumbs for some crunch. On the table in 20 mins, it’s a weeknight hero. Sweet, fiery, and incredibly easy to make. You’re going to love this sausage gochujang rigatoni from Xiengni Zhou.

UMBRO IS BACK

As Umbro marks its centenary, we spotlight how they’ve set the standard for collaborations in the first half of 2024.

A top player this season, Umbro’s 2024 has been filled with nothing but hits. So saying that they are back isn’t necessarily true. The real reason behind their recent revival is that Umbro is celebrating 100 years this year, so expect even more from them before the end of 2024.

The first collaboration we wanted to go through comes from Palace. Their last Umbro collab was back in 2022 — time really flies, but they are back together with another collaborative capsule that featured so much heat it was worth

reconsidering your financial decisions. Much like the first venture together this one sold out in less than a few hours.

The real beauty of this collab is the versatility to mix and match individual items together to create various outfits. You can get the matching tracksuit, or pair the pants with a jersey or a crewneck, and so on — another successful venture for this pairing.

Another heavy hitter from Umbro is in the form

of their collaboration with Korean brand Sedan All-Purpose. Before we touch on this, it’s highly recommended that you start to familiarise yourself with streetwear brands from Asia. This collaboration featured a track jacket and jersey, plus a matching set of pants to go along with this one. This was launched exclusively in Korea unfortunately, but it’s not the end of the world — maybe it’s for the best so we can save our hard earned money. The jacket is great, coming with a couple of drawstrings at the bottom that

allow you to tighten the waist level. The jerseys are clean and available in two enjoyable colors — loving that little hint of the Opel logo. Overall it’s a collection that’s reminiscent of the 90’s Umbro football kits. A trend that’s certainly having it’s moment and seemingly shows no signs of slowing down any time soon — a trend that Umbro has welcomed with a warm embrace, especially so when it comes to it’s collaborators.

Furthering the ongoing dialogue between football, sportswear and global street trends, Umbro

has teamed up with Slam Jam to create the ‘Penalty Culture’ collection, an ode to the three main cultural vectors with strong roots in the UK and Italy. A bold statement incorporated into sports essentials such as jackets, t-shirts, pants and accessories. Bold, vibrant patterns, silhouettes & colours are featured throughout.

As part of there Centenary celebrations, Umbro have also teamed up with London-based luxury streetwear brand Aries, for a third instalment of their much-celebrated collaboration.

The capsule collection includes two classic short-sleeved football shirts, a long-sleeved goalkeeper shirt, football shorts, and accessories. Inspired by the century-old brand’s deep football archive, the eight-piece collection merges Aries’ luxury streetwear aesthetic with Umbro’s classic sportswear across a slew of red, white and blue silhouettes.

Details on the tops include an all-over rose print backdrop, an ode to the “English Rose”, and a tonal black print depicting mythical Lions on the Goalkeeper jersey, representative of England’s history with the legendary creature.

Legendary skateboard brand HUF also decided to get in on the action. Umbro lends it’s nostalgic track suits — including jackets and pants — alongside its jersey silhouettes to HUF to provide their own spin to the early 1990s-inspired British football club aesthetic. The pieces all feature co-branded logos, which are emblazoned on the left chest of the track jacket and shorts as well as on the sleeves of the jacket. The pieces take on a loose and boxy fit reminiscent of team kits at the time. The jersey and pants feature an all-over textile pattern that combines both brands’ monikers, resembling that of an actual football team.

5. New Balance X Stone Island

Stone Island and New Balance have assembled two new colorways of the sneaker. Key features range from a ripstop upper to nubuck overlays and an EVA foam midsole. The silicone “N” logos draw inspiration from Stone Island designs from the ’80s while the brand’s signature compass motif appears as a patch at the tongue.

4. Asics X Kiko Kostadinov

ASICS and Kiko Kostadinov Studio took the sneaker world by storm with the release of the UB6-S GT-2160. This innovative redesign of the beloved GT-2160 model from the GT-2000 series, originally launched in the early 2010s, seamlessly marries functionality with a contemporary aesthetic. The result is a sneaker that pays homage to its roots while charting a new course in design and performance.

3. Supreme X Nike

Retro-inspired with a street aesthetic, the Spring 2024 release from the New York label and the swoosh giant features technical two-piece sets in gradient tones and colour blocking; hoodie and jogger sets; quilted denim waistcoats; short-sleeved, semi-transparent shirts; and relaxed shorts, plus a range of glossy bucket hats.

The logos intermingle to elevate the capsule that seamlessly blends the street codes and sporting heritage of both parties.

2. Palace X Reebok

Delving into visionary territory through intense training sessions, Palace and Reebok continue to strengthen their relationship a decade after their first meeting. This season it’s the turn of the Fury and Club C models, two timeless icons that arrive in neutral colours influenced by a vintage spirit.

In addition, a selection of apparel has been designed, including tracksuits, sweatshirts and T-shirts decorated with emblems of both brands that sign the special collaboration, as well as a series of accessories that maintain the minimalist and elegant essence of the delivery.

1. Adidas X Wales Bonner

The latest Wales Bonner x Adidas collab continues to merge the German sportswear brand’s iconic silhouettes with the British menswear designer’s earth tones and contemporary style. As always, the standout product of this drop is the Samba. The Adidas Samba is one of this year’s most talkedabout sneakers and aslong as these two keep collaborating, that won’t change.

These collaborations between top fashion brands and national teams are not just about looking good—they’re about redefining what it means to be an athlete in the modern era. As we countdown to the games, the anticipation builds not just for the competition, but for the debut of these revolutionary designs that promise to make a lasting impression on and off the field.

WiFi and modern tech conveniences, these off-grid sanctuaries foster an environment where guests can slow down and relish the tranquillity of the natural world that we so often ignore. Recent growth has seen the business expand its footprint, forging partnerships with local suppliers and landowners in Spain, with the opening of cabins in Catalunya, just an hour from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona. Their collaboration with local businesses has ensured that their cabins in the Pyrenees offer not only breathtaking vistas but also an authentic taste of local culture and heritage. These collaborations bolster the local economy and enhance the guest experience, blending the splendour of nature with the richness of the region’s traditions. Visitors to the Spanish escape have lauded the transformative power of their Unplugged stay, extolling the serenity that comes from

Hector and Ben, who confessed to working hard, but also playing hard. Working alongside one another at a tech start-up, both were clocking up 11 hours of screen time a day, resulting in inevitable burnout. As both grappled with their own battles against burnout and screen addiction, Hector and Ben envisioned a sanctuary free from digital distractions. Escaping their busy lives for space, Hector travelled to The Himalayas on a two week silent retreat where he spent time meditating and reflecting. Ben, less able to see himself meditating surrounded by monks, saw how recharged his friend was upon his return. From that, their ambition to create Unplugged rapidly grew. Now across the UK, their cabins are strategically situated within easy reach of major cities, which makes them an ideal haven for busy urban dwellers. Stripped of

Rimowa, the storied manufacturer behind the world’s finest luggage, is no stranger to collaborations. Over the years, the historic German company has partnered with everyone from Porsche to Supreme to Tiffany. But the product of its latest collaboration breaks new ground: it’s not a suitcase—it’s an espresso machine. And it’s an exceptionally sleek one at that.

“This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration and the possibilities that arise when two brands unite with a shared passion and purpose,” said Hugues Bonnet-Masimbert, CEO of Rimowa. “Working alongside La Marzocco has been a true design challenge, resulting in a piece that celebrates the artistry of coffee-making while embracing German engineering and cutting-edge design. We’re proud to have brought it to life.”

Is This the Most Beautiful Espresso Machine Ever Made?

Rimowa’s signature grooved aluminium, iconic in its luggage and accessories, is seamlessly integrated with La Marzocco’s renowned engineering in the Linea Mini—a compact marvel that turns a morning espresso into an art form.

Each piece requires 40 hours of intricate craftsmanship, made in La Marzocco’s Florence factory, where artisanal skills shine through every detail. The grooved panels, built in Rimowa’s Cologne factory, are assembled and installed entirely by hand, featuring an integrated hot water tap and knobs crafted from aluminium. The attention to detail is undeniable, with the Rimowa and La Marzocco monograms proudly embedded as a final, luxurious touch.

PATEK PHILIPPE: Expertise On Display

At the heart of Patek Philippe’s company philosophy lies their iconic quote, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation.” This statement perfectly encapsulates the brand’s emphasis on enduring quality and the idea that a Patek Philippe watch is more than a possession.

For those who appreciate life’s luxuries, time is more than simply just a measure. It is a reflection of taste, heritage and your personal identity. Patek Philippe, a name synonymous with watchmaking excellence, has again captivated the world of horology, with the In-Line Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5236P-010, released for 2024. This new model, displaying time across an elegant opaline rose gilt dial is an emblem of sophistication, intended for the collector who values both tradition and innovation.

The Ref. 5236P-010 is a masterpiece of design and technical prowess, showcasing Patek Philippe’s historic dedication to perfection. In a platinum case, the watch exudes a subtle yet undeniable style. The rose gilt dial, a unique choice, adds warmth and depth to the overall appearance, making it an instant classic among collectors and horology enthusiasts. The in-line perpetual calendar is a rare and complex technical innovation which is displayed with unrivalled clarity and precision.

This latest release from Patek Philippe is more than just an accessory. It is a work of art, carefully crafted by the hands of master watchmakers. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the Ref. 5236P’s construction, from the delicate moon phase indicator to the micro-rotor movement, which ensures that the watch remains slim and elegant on the wrist. The platinum case, with its polished finish, provides the perfect contrast to the warm hues of the rose gilt dial, creating a wonderful balance.

What sets the Ref. 5236P-010 apart from other complications is its in-line perpetual calendar. This is a complication that displays the day, date and month in a single row across the watch’s dial. This feature not only enhances readability for the wearer, but also showcases Patek Philippe’s ability to innovate within the confines of traditional watchmaking. The watch is powered by the company’s in-house Caliber 31-260 PS QL, a self-winding movement that combines cutting-edge technology with centuries-old craftsmanship.

For the affluent and aspirational, the Patek Philippe In-Line Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5236P-010 is more than just a watch; it is an heirloom in the making. It is a timepiece that transcends trends, offering timeless appeal that will endure for generations.

ROLEX: Connecting The World

In the world of luxury timepieces, Rolex is consistently famed for their delivery of innovation and style. This year, at Watches and Wonders 2024, Rolex once again captivated watch enthusiasts and collectors by unveiling new variations of its iconic GMT-Master II. This renowned collection, celebrated for its dual time functionality, offers more than just a glance at another time zone. Rather, it creates an emotional connection, linking the wearer to a world beyond their own.

The latest additions to the GMT-Master II family include two stunning Oystersteel versions, each of which features a distinctive 24-hour graduated Cerachrom bezel insert in a stylish combination of grey and black ceramic. These exquisite timepieces are available with either the classic Oyster bracelet or the elegant Jubilee bracelet, offering a choice of styles to suit any wearer.

At the heart of the GMT-Master II lies the calibre 3285, a cutting-edge, in-house movement created by Rolex, that powers the display of an additional time zone in a 24-hour format, along with the date, hours, minutes and seconds.

Originally crafted as a navigational aid for professionals crisscrossing the globe, the GMT-Master quickly became the quintessential timepiece for discerning travellers. Its unique design, featuring the bi-directional rotatable bezel and a dual-colour graduated insert, symbolises the seamless transition from day to night. This functionality, combined with its distinctive and now world famous aesthetic, has established the GMTMaster as a true ‘tool watch’, with its evolution reflecting the increasing demands of collectors for technical excellence and sophisticated design.

Since the launch of the original GMT-Master in 1955, Rolex has continually pushed the boundaries of innovation. The introduction of the GMT-Master II in 1982 marked a significant advancement, allowing the hour hand to be set independently, a feature that further cemented its status as a must-have for the modern globetrotter. This evolution is a testament to the Rolex commitment to advancing technology for the benefit of its wearers, ensuring that each piece is both a functional tool and a luxurious accessory.

The GMT-Master II is not just a watch; it is a symbol of global sophistication, reflecting the wearer’s passion for exploration and their appreciation for timeless elegance. For the affluent traveller, it serves as both a functional companion and a statement piece, encapsulating the essence of luxury and adventure in one remarkable wristwatch. With Rolex’s unwavering dedication to excellence, the GMT-Master II stands as a beacon of innovation and style in the world of horology.

Reducing vehicle emissions is a critical component of Wimbledon’s environment positive commitment with on-site charging infrastructure powered by renewable electricity and capable of accommodating increasing numbers of hybrid and electric vehicles as progress continues towards the All England Club’s 2030 net zero operational emissions target.

This ambition is shared by Range Rover, with every Range Rover available as a plug-in electric hybrid, and the first fully electric vehicle due to be revealed later this year.

“As an iconic British cultural event watched by millions across the world, The Championships provides the ideal opportunity for Range

Rover to engage with our global clients with creative storytelling, that perfectly captures the elegance and refinement of our vehicles and the synergies between our two modern luxury brands”, says Geraldine Ingham, Managing Director of Range Rover.

This sentiment and the depth of the partnership is certainly shared by Wimbledon. “We are delighted to be continuing our long-standing partnership with JLR with the announcement of Range Rover as Official Vehicle Partner”, adds Deborah Jevans CBE, Chair of the All England Club. “I am particularly pleased with the inclusion of a significant number of lower emission plug-in hybrid vehicles in the fleet, with a focus on as many journeys as possible being delivered in EV mode. This is another step towards our goal of achieving net zero operational emissions by 2030.”

A Partnership That Stands The Test Of

Time.

A name synonymous with precision and innovation, OMEGA has long been revered in the world of horology. Alongside its reputation for creating watches capable of space travel and the endurance of everyday life closer to home, one of its most prestigious accolades is its role as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games.

This partnership, which has spanned nearly a century, continues to solidify OMEGA’s reputation for excellence, playing an integral part in some of the world’s greatest sporting moments. As OMEGA prepares for its 31st Olympic Games as Official Timekeeper, Essential explores the story of a timeless journey.

OMEGA’s Olympics experience and timekeeping expertise is unrivalled by any other watch company. The story of its journey dates back to 1932 when, for the first time in history, a single watch company was selected as the Official Timekeeper for every event.

Not only a significant moment in OMEGA’s history, but also in the history of sports measurement. One watchmaker was dispatched from Bienne to Los Angeles, equipped with 30 high-precision stopwatches that were accurate to the nearest 1/10th of a second. Following their introduction in 1932, OMEGA was presented with a new

challenge in 1936, with the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which with added complication of snowy events.

As they have within their collections of beautiful wristwatches, OMEGA has continued to push the boundaries of timekeeping technology at the Olympic Games, introducing numerous innovations throughout the decades that have continued to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of measuring athletic performance.

As they head into their 31st Olympic Games as Official Timekeeper, it is evident that OMEGA has no plans to slow the pace on their innovative reputation. One stand out addition to the armoury at Paris 2024 is the Scan ‘O’ Vision Ultimate, the highest resolution of any photo finish camera on the market, capturing 40,000 digital images per second on the finish line of races. It will increase the speed and efficiency of the judge’s decision making, offering maximum clarity.

We will all recall moments throughout history when we have been captivated by the splendour and joy of Olympic successes and records, and we can guarantee that Paris 2024 will provide yet more of those to the history books. Thankfully, with OMEGA’s help, we’ll have those results even quicker.

It was at the London Olympics of 1948 that OMEGA introduced the first photofinish camera, known as the “Magic Eye.” Capturing finish-line images, this groundbreaking technology ensured more precise results in events where winners were previously determined by human observation.

1968: Swimming Touchpads

Mexico City saw the introduction of a most iconic innovation in 1968, as touchpads, installed at the ends of swimming lanes, allowed swimmers to stop the clock themselves by touching the pad, thus ensuring accurate and fair results. Their use has become a standard in competitive swimming events around the world.

2012: Quantum Timer

At London 2012, OMEGA showcased the Quantum Timer, proving that their dedication to precision remains strong into this modern era of Olympic timekeeping. The quartz-driven Quantum Timer counts seconds with an enhanced resolution of one millionth of a second.

KUSABBI ROSA

Introducing Rosa Kusabbi, a Liverpoolbased illustrator and animator whose work combines contemporary styles with a rebellious punk spirit, focusing on the queer community, championing women, and many important social issues. Rosa has worked and collaborated with clients including YouTube, Instagram, New Balance and Eurovision (just to name a few), with her art being featured in international exhibitions, spreading messages of unity and empowerment worldwide.

01.

Can you tell us about your journey into illustration and animation? What initially sparked your interest in these fields?

RK: So I always loved art and it was probably one of the only things that I really stuck to throughout school. I enjoyed every other subject, but art was just the one where I knew I could always do well and always loved it. So then I thought that I would go and do that at university. To be honest, I don’t know why I chose illustration over something like fine art, but it’s probably (and it may sound boring) but I felt that illustration and graphics were more vocational. I think that is the honest answer, because a lot of people like me may love art, but get told that you’re not going to be able to make a career in it. I was just quite lucky that the course I did was graphic design and illustration. As soon as I started on it I felt that the illustration route was much more for me, as I like visual storytelling.

During that course, I started to get into a little bit of animation as well. I’ve always loved Wes Anderson films and loved Fantastic Mr Fox growing up. So I wanted to do that kind of stop motion animation, but more 2D.

02.

Are there any key moments or experiences in your life that have significantly shaped your focus on female and queer empowerment?

RK: That is a good question. I think I’ve always really been quite political and I’ve always wanted to make art that was political to spread any message that I could. A lot of the time, it’s either something that I’m feeling at that moment, whether something that’s coming up on the news or something that I’m really angry about and there’s nothing else I can do but create a piece of work around it.

I think the themes of queerness and female empowerment are just naturally always going to come up because I am a queer woman. Things like that are inherent to who I am. I actually find it hard to create a piece of art now that doesn’t have one of those themes. I sit and say “No, just draw a dog” and then it’ll naturally become something else.

03.

How did you end up getting into the world of freelancing?

RK: So I graduated during lockdown at the very first big 2020 scary lockdown when nobody knew what was going to happen afterwards. I always say I was extremely lucky to have graduated at that time even though it didn’t feel like it right then, because I think that’s when TikTok blew up and Instagram started to champion artists a little bit more. I ended up moving back home and I bought myself a screen printing kit and made loads

of prints because I had so many people on TikTok asking me to. Suddenly it became a lucrative career. I think I was also lucky that I could have that space to create something, not have to worry about getting another job at that time because nobody could actually get a job at that time.

I think that’s so interesting that you’re talking there about a time when it could have been so negative and it could have been so difficult to find that next step. But actually because of the situation and the hype created on social media, it was a perfect opportunity for you.

RK: I remember when I finished university and we didn’t get an actual degree show. We only got an online show. I just remember thinking that it was the worst time to graduate. But then in hindsight, I was actually quite lucky because I don’t know if I would have had that space and time. If I’d graduated a year before or year after then maybe I would have put a lot more pressure on myself to get another job and make money. It just allowed me to really focus on freelancing. So I was quite lucky.

04.

So how would you describe your creative process in just three words?

RK: Maybe I’d have to say Impulsive. I need something to get excited about and I need to put it down on paper straight away rather than really thinking it through. Sorry this isn’t three words [laughs], but that’s what works for me. Then emotional - and political as part of thatand maybe bold to represent the vibrant, neon colours.

05.

Is there a favourite part to your creative process?

RK: I love the final touches. No actually, that’s a lie. I actually don’t because I spend about 3 hours doing the final touches. I do love the doom scrolling and hours of looking through different ideas. That excites me the most, especially if it is something like a film that has inspired me. I love that feeling of “This is the idea!”. Once I’m on the track of a good idea, I love the feeling of seeing how good something is going to be.

06.

What do you do when you find yourself in a rut or just lacking creativity?

RK: I’ve got ADHD, so I do get heavy burnout a lot. I think there are times when I’ve had burnout and it’s been so cumbersome that I’ve literally just had to step back and think this next month is a write off because I can’t get myself out of the rut. There have been times during my freelance career where I suppose

the way to deal with it is to organise your time better - but I just don’t do that [laughs]. My way to generally get out of it is to just take the bull by the horns and force myself into another project, otherwise I’ll just never do it.

07.

How do you ensure your work authentically represents the communities that you aim to empower?

RK: I think if the work is going to represent the community that I’m part of, well if I’m making it, it is going to do that naturally because it is who I am. There is a big conversation about straight people making art for Pride Month or Queer Art, or men making art for women, or white people making art for people of colour. If it is going to be authentic, then I think you have to come from that community. My work is authentic to who I am and my community because I have a big part in the Queer community in Liverpool. My work represents my friends - I often hide them in my murals.

08.

What challenges have you faced within the world of art, particularly as an artist focusing on feminism and queer identity?

RK: I would say that the situations I’ve faced haven’t been so much prejudice, but certain

clients speaking in a slightly homophobic way or just saying the wrong things. I’ve done work for people who have commissioned me to do work during Pride Month, because I’m a queer artist, I’ve asked if I could do a pride themed piece and the company said “make sure its child friendly”. I don’t think they would have said that if it was any other theme. I’ve had my work torn down around Liverpool, particularly when I was part of a series with other queer artists. The crazy part is that the series was commissioned to stand against homophobic attacks that had happened locally and within a day they’d been ripped down by somebody. These are the things that can often make me angry, but that feeds back into my work. It makes me more emotional and, as difficult as that is, my art is an outlet for that.

09.

This issue of the Journal focuses on collaborations. Can you talk about any particular collaborations that stand out or how they’ve impacted your work?

RK: I’ve worked with a number of big names like Adobe, TikTok and New Balance. The experience I have with Adobe is always extremely positive. I’ve been lucky to have them take me to a lot of events, such as the Adobe Max Festival and there were some incredible speakers there. Lots of political, queer speakers like Yinka Olori

and Margo Bowman. I love all of their work and there are elements I introduce to my own work, so that was a big opportunity.

One of my favourite collaborations that I did was in 2020 when I worked with a charity in California and Mexico. We designed and produced bandanas to raise money for the day labourers who were effectively forced to work for free or below minimum wage, so couldn’t afford to support their families and were being threatened with deportation. That charity was raising money for the labourers and it was so lovely to work with a small organisation who have the same ethos as me.

I do love some of the big companies and it is great to be asked to work on Pride Month or International Women’s Day, but then to work with a charity who was so passionate about a shared cause was great.

A lot of the work I do involves me collaborating with the bigger brands, who have big budgets, and then I can use that money to subsidise community work or smaller collaborations with smaller artists and local businesses.

10.

So from those experiences do you have any sort of rules or or boundaries that you have to put in place when working with the bigger clients?

RK: Based on what I post on Instagram and having made my opinions on a number of

standpoints clear, most companies that don’t like that are not going to come to me. I don’t really have to put any rules into action that often because people see me and think, no she isn’t for us!

11.

How do you engage with the local art community and social causes in Liverpool and how does this community support or inspire you?

RK: I’ve done a lot of work with Homotopia which is an amazing queer organisation in the North West and, along with a friend of mine who is also a queer artist, we worked on a Queer Youth Workshop. This was themed around Pride and Protest Affirmations, focusing on queer youth in Liverpool and London, who all connected over art and protest. We taught them about screen printing and techniques that are synonymous with banner making for protests. I think this is especially important for kids who may not have an outlet, which is often true of queer kids or those in the care system. But I’ve also worked with other organisations in the Wirral and you see kids who come into a session and don’t want to talk, but then as soon as they’re learning more it engages them. They can make something tangible and now some kids are showing me the art they are creating at home. Art can give a voice to kids that may not always have lots of other places in society.

Are there any artists or creators who have had a significant influence on your work?

RK: There was an artist called Corita Kent who was actually a Nun and went on to become a really significant protest artist. I saw her work in the Illustration Museum. Her use of colour was amazing. If anybody saw her exhibition they’d think that my work looks just like hers, because of the colours and the ethos behind it.

13.

Is there anything that you would like to do in the future or a project that you haven’t had a chance to do yet?

RK: I think if we’re talking about a massive goal, I think it would be amazing to work on a film or an animation. But I’d also love to work on more photoshoots introducing my other personas, much more printing and, of course, protest work - that is always the best. I would also love to do more workshops. Aside from being an illustrator, workshops are such an integral part of me, because I really do love teaching. I think more jobs within community groups is something I’d want to do more of.

14.

Do you have any advice that you’d give to emerging artists who want to address similar social issues through their work or beginning in the industry?

RK: I think be aware that you are going to get a lot of rejections. I think I’m particularly sensitive about rejection, which makes the job so much harder. Sometimes I’ll take it as a reflection on myself rather than a reflection of that company and how they don’t wanna work with someone who supports the things that I do. That can be really hard, so it would be good to be aware of that from the beginning.

15.

What is the best bit of advice that you have been given by someone, about the industry or just how to go about life in general?

RK: I think it would be to stay authentic to myself. The work that makes me happiest is always the work that is to do with myself and my community. One of my friends once told me to be vulnerable and be vulnerable in my art. That is such an important thing and has made me develop a tough skin. Having that vulnerability makes you so much more relatable. It is so important for people around you to see that too.

AN INTERVIEW WITH Allison Whorton [Co-founder and Head Roaster]

At Two Words Coffee Roasters, each batch of coffee is a testament to the team’s commitment to quality and ethical sourcing. It’s clear that Allison’s passion for coffee goes beyond just the perfect cup; it’s about creating connections and bringing people together.

Two Words aims to differentiate themselves by showcasing the natural potential of their coffee beans and through their relationship with Ropes & Twines in Liverpool, they’ve been able to build a community that will support future growth.

The company’s Instagram feed is a vibrant showcase of beautifully crafted beverages, innovative brewing techniques and a glimpse at the team behind the scenes.

@twowordscoffee

Tell us a bit about how Two Words came about?

Where did your passion for coffee begin?

It was a passion project myself and Tian (co-owner) have had for a few years now. For me personally, after working in coffee shops for over 10 years, I’ve grown to love and become much more interested in the backstory of coffee, from the process and politics of how and where it is grown to how the thousands of roasters around the world bring them to coffee shops and consumers ethically and sustainably, so delving into roasting felt a natural fit.

I’ve worked in cafes and coffee shops serving coffee since I was 17, but my year living in Australia at 21 really ignited a passion for the process. I worked in two specialty shops in Sydney and absolutely loved the hectic morning rush. What really blew my mind was that the quality didn’t dip at all between 7am and 9am, even though we were preparing hundreds of drinks during that time. Since returning to the UK I’ve never forgotten the need for consistency when saying you serve specialty coffee; this was the main goal for myself and the team when I was at Ropes & Twines, and I’ll take that practice into roasting now.

Why was Ropes & Twines the perfect partner for this latest venture?

What is unique about the products being introduced by Two Words, and what separates Two Words from other roasters?

Our Two Words launch had to be at Ropes, as the venue has made all this possible in a way. Many of our regulars at Ropes have been so supportive of our new venture so it felt right to celebrate the brand launch there.

The Two Words portfolio is made up of coffee from passionate farmers who care about the land their coffee grows on. Many of these farmers are committed to researching their terroir to produce high quality and innovative coffees in the ever changing climate we live in. It would be untrue to say we are different to other roasters in this respect as we are big fans of so many names in the industry, but we think this is only a plus, there’s room for everyone and it only pushes the industry and education on coffee further.

Our ethos when it comes to roasting is simple, we know the coffees we source are excellent - we simply roast to showcase their potential.

How does Two Words plan to engage with the local community?

What is on the horizon for Two Words and what is in store next?

We really enjoyed our community coffee morning back in May, so we’re currently lining up some similar pop-up events with different shops in the area between now and Christmas. I personally found the event with Ropes to be a great way to get everyone together for a catch up and a brew, yes the coffee menu was great to showcase some different style drinks but seemed secondary to the chat, which I’ll take.

Our site is under construction at the minute up in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter just off Hope Street, so we hope to be all moved in and roasting by 2025. This will mean the installation of our new Loring roaster too, that means I will be able to roast 15kg at a time as opposed to our current 600g! I’m currently using a 1kg Bullet roaster and roasting upto 24 batches a day, I’ll be to do the same amount in just 2 roasts with the Loring. Packaging is on its way so we’ll be launching our retail offering in the next couple of months, both online and in shops such as Ropes & Twines. Shortly after that, we’ll conquer the world....maybe!

How would you describe Two Words in two words?

Bookies tip.

Rebel Restaurants Group, renowned for its trailblazing North West venues like Emily’s in Formby and The Brunch & Cocktail Club in Liverpool city centre, has unveiled its latest masterpiece this summer—Penelope’s on the Park. Nestled along the historic Rotten Row, at the edge of Victoria Park in Birkdale, this new gem epitomises Rebel’s unwavering commitment to crafting extraordinary dining experiences.

In a world where every penny spent on hospitality must count, Rebel Restaurants understands the importance of making each visit unforgettable. Their philosophy is straightforward: if a guest chooses to dine at a Rebel Restaurant, it has to be exceptional. Penelope’s is a testament to this ethos, delivering everything diners expect from the Rebel brand—adventurous menus, a remarkable team, and interiors as stunning as the cuisine.

Taking ownership of a historic building dating back to the 1900s, Rebel aimed for Penelope’s on the Park to pay reverence to Southport’s rich history. The team spent over a year meticulously transforming this regional treasure, infusing it with contemporary flair while preserving its original charm. The result is a venue that not only honours its past but also sets a new benchmark for luxury dining in the North West.

The décor is spectacular—a symphony of blues adorned with bespoke artwork, bold fabrics, Mediterranean ceramics, and seasonal florals. Penelope’s pièce de résistance? Its remarkable skylight, a true labour of love for the team. Originally envisioned as a traditional skylight, the plan was reimagined when structural challenges arose. But in true Rebel fashion, the team improvised, installing a custom metal framework housing bespoke glass panels designed by the talented Scottish artist Heather Hackett. These panels, which light up at the touch of a button, ensure that even on the cloudiest days, Penelope’s is bathed in a summer glow.

The cuisine at Penelope’s on the Park is both exquisite and thoughtfully curated, thanks to the expertise of Executive Chef Mike Hendren. The menus, spanning from brunch to evening dinner, offer a diverse array of dishes crafted with passion and precision. Highlights include Neapolitan-style pizzas made with fresh, daily-prepared dough, an array of pasta dishes (special mention to the highly anticipated 100 Layer Lasagne), and the unforgettable 24-Hour Chicken, prepared on a live fire Asado grill. With options for children and consideration for all dietary needs, Penelope’s ensures every guest leaves satisfied.

Penelope’s: Bold Flavours, Redefined.

As one of the most eagerly awaited restaurant openings in the North West, Penelope’s has already made waves. The day bookings were announced, the website crashed under the weight of demand and the restaurant’s Instagram account soared to 10,000 followers before the doors even opened. EJ can attest to the fact that the hype is definitely well deserved.

Kaffir & Chilli Salted Corn on the Cob with Crushed Cashew Nuts

“This must be one of the easiest things to pull out the bag ever. I’ve used coconut oil to lather the seasoning over the corn on the cob in this recipe to keep it vegan, however if you replace the coconut oil for butter it also makes for a delicious lunch. Despite this, using butter is not necessary alongside the added creaminess from the cashew nuts. I like it spicy as you can see from the amount of bird’s eye chillies used. For me the spice is important in this recipe to balance with the natural sweetness from the corn but if you like you can reduce the chilli at your own will.”

Ingredients:

2 Kaffir lime leaves, finely sliced

Corn on the cob 2 Garlic cloves, diced or thinly sliced

4 Birds eye chilli, finely chopped, less if you don’t like it spicy

4 Tablespoons coconut oil, gently melted to a liquid

2 Tablespoons roasted cashew nuts, lightly pounded in a pestle or chopped

1 Pinch flaked sea salt

Method:

This is more of an assemble than a method. In a large mixing bowl, combine the coconut oil, lime leaves, garlic, kaffir lime leaves and chilli. Next, using your hands, massage the seasoning into the corn on the cob, taking your time and ensuring that every part is jammed full of the seasoning. Next sprinkle the salt evenly over all the corn on the cob, it should stick to the coconut oil with ease.

Next cook the cobs. For best results roast them over a medium heat on the barbecue for 15-20 minutes, rotating regularly to ensure an even cook on every side. The corn will be golden brown in appearance and will soften when ready to eat. Alternatively, you can place these in an oven, pre-heated to 200 degrees centigrade for around 15-20 minutes until they are ready to eat.

Once satisfied that the corn is cooked, remove from the heat and sprinkle with the cashew nuts and then serve. Bulk out with jasmine rice and salad for a more filling lunch.

Mexican heritage, paying homage to the traditional ingredients and techniques used by generations of cooks before her.

A self-confessed Seed Library fan, this partnership struck a real chord with Adriana. “This is such an exciting collaboration for me to take part in. I have been a fan of Seed Library for a while and I have really enjoyed working with the team to pair my traditional Mexican food with their excellent drinks offering. I can’t wait for everyone to try it!”

Ryan Chetiyawardana, Seed Library’s founder caught up with Essential to tell us why this latest collaboration means so much. “Adriana is one of the most exciting –and lovely! – chefs we’ve come across in a while. We were so happy to collaborate with her on some bits over at her Mayfair spot, so we thought it would be so great to be able to bring a slice of her magic over East.”

What makes Adriana’s style and menu choice so special for Seed Library? “With an incredible pedigree, and such an infectious passion for her native Mexico – which places focus on traditional and modern, produce to technique – it was brilliant to look at dishes that could work in the distinctly-drinks setting of Seed Library, and to marry some incredibly delicious dishes with our cocktails.”

Collaborations are certainly not a new phenomenon for Mr Lyan and the Seed Library team, with this Cavita pop-up following successful projects with Norman’s Cafe, Ruben’s Reubens and My Neighbours The Dumplings. The Cavita residency is available until 1st September.
