Message from the Head of School

As Cheryl Sandberg contends, “the march toward true equality continues. It continues down the halls of governments, corporations, academia, hospitals, law firms, nonprofits, research labs, and every organization, large and small.” In her recent book, Lean In, Sandberg, COO of Facebook, encourages women to take a seat at the table and to “lean in.” At Walker’s, it is the norm for girls to “lean in” every day. Research documented by UCLA’s Dr. Linda Sax and commissioned by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, has shown that girls’ school graduates’ self confidence in math and computer skills is 10 percent higher than that of their coed counterparts. Similarly, a significantly higher percentage of graduates from all-girls schools rate their public speaking and writing abilities as very strong compared to girls who graduate from coed schools. Girls’ school graduates are three times more likely to pursue careers in engineering. As teachers and educators who invest in girls on a daily basis, we are especially appreciative of those who are also convinced that the intellect and hearts of girls and women matter greatly to the world. When we invest in Walker’s, we are paying it forward. We are ensuring that another girl graduates with the conviction and confidence to make a difference and to consider leadership in whatever arena she may choose. When we give generously to Walker’s, we are not only improving the quality of the Walker’s experience, but we are also ensuring that the voices and talents of young women become more prominent, that more leadership positions are held by women, and ultimately, when this happens, as Sandberg suggests, we will have “a better world.” EXCERPTS FROM HEAD’S COUNCIL STUDENTS

I share with you, to the right of this letter, a few of the thoughts from current Walker’s students who applied to Head’s Council this fall. Head’s Council is comprised of a group of students who are particularly interested in learning more about the “business” side of their School. We meet regularly at the Head’s house (Debby’s House) to discuss levers that affect the quality of a strong School like Walker’s. From enrollment and finances to development and strategic planning, these students learn about what it takes to ensure their School’s success. I continue to be inspired by our students’ commitment; one can clearly sense how deeply they care about their School. Even more important is their moral understanding of paying it forward. Today’s Walker’s students truly “get it.” Please join them, “lean in” with them, and help ensure a better world. I am completely convinced that Walker’s mission ripples outward with tremendous impact.

“By educating myself about school finances, admissions, and development, I know that I will expand my horizons and be able to be helpful to Ethel Walker, even after I graduate.” “I hope that in the future, Walker’s will continue to expand through infrastructure, rigorous academics, and stewardship. I believe that if we continue updating our campus facilities, we will attract more students with gifted talents in all aspects of life. Stewardship is very important to Ethel Walker and I believe it should continue to be more prominent with time.”

Thanks to so many of our loyal alumnae, faculty, staff, parents, trustees, former trustees, students, and friends, Walker’s is standing tall and proud two years into its second century. Thank you for your continued investment. It is Walker’s time! Sincerely,

“I hope that Walker’s keeps its sense of community, integrity, and compassion but at the same time, I want to see Walker’s grow. I want to see the Centennial Center built so that students will be more keen on coming to Walker’s for other reasons and I want Walker’s to be more well known.”

Elizabeth C. Speers P’16 Head of School

“In the future, I hope the School continues to thrive. I have always talked to my parents, about how, when I am a parent, I would love to send my daughters here.”

Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

SOURCES AND APPLICATIONS OF FUNDS - FY 2012/2013

Donya Nagib Sabet ’90, past Chair of the Board of Trustees, asked me to report to you on fiscal year 2013. She is kind to allow me to do this because this past year was an important milestone for Walker’s and we have Donya and the members of the Board of Trustees to thank for their strategic leadership and personal support. Now into our second century, The Ethel Walker School proudly advances on many fronts. We graduated 52 seniors this past June who went on to rigorous institutions of higher education. I was impressed with each girl’s confidence and accomplishments. Our Head of School, Bessie Speers, is entering her seventh year at Walker’s and through her leadership and that of our experienced faculty and staff, the School has made great progress in advancing our curriculum with all the latest academic and technological challenges. In May, we dedicated the Head’s house in memory of Deborah Williams MacKenzie ’55 for her outstanding dedication and support of The Ethel Walker School. Debby’s House was filled with Debby’s family and friends who celebrated her life over luncheon and with our students during Chapel. This year’s reunion was well attended, and the weather allowed for outside and inside conversation, remembrance, and celebration. What a wonderful way to relax and meet old friends, current students, and faculty. On September 20, we had a ribbon cutting ceremony for Walker’s new dormitory. It’s such a lovely building with many places to gather and areas set aside for study and reflection. We appreciate the kind support we have received thus far from alumnae and friends to help finance this important addition to the campus. Our $50M campaign, still in the silent phase, is close to reaching the halfway mark due to our generous alumnae, parents, and friends.

Annual Giving Report | 2012–2013 In addition, we raised $1,975,360 toward our $50M Centennial Campaign goal, reaching $24.4M at the end of our second fundraising year. I am happy and proud to announce that Walker’s raised a total of $3,609,281 during the 2012-13 fiscal year! Head of School Bessie Speers P’16, Campaign Chair Sarah Colley ’75, and all of our trustees and volunteers deserve a round of applause for leading this important effort to make The Ethel Walker School even better for the next 100 years. We could not have had such a record-breaking year without your support and participation. Thank you for your vote of confidence. Walker’s is a very special place and deserves your sustained attention and commitment. I look forward to meeting you and extending my personal appreciation on behalf of The Ethel Walker School.

On August 1, I was delighted to start my new position as COO and Assistant Head for Strategic Initiatives at Walker’s. As part of this new role, I oversee the talented staff of the development office. I have to share with you how impressed I am with our fundraising team! They are focused and strategic, allowing them to successfully meet and exceed their goals during these challenging economic times. A special thanks to Jane Bradford and Heidi McCann who served with distinction as Co-Interim Directors last spring. In my first correspondence with you, it gives me great pleasure to share the following stellar results for the 2012-13 fiscal year. The 2012-13 Walker’s Annual Fund total raised was $1,633,921 which was received from trustees, alumnae, parents, and friends of The Ethel Walker School. This was an all-time high for our unrestricted appeal. Bravo!

Sincerely,

Thom Greenlaw COO and Assistant Head for Strategic Initiatives

Centennial Campaign Update

The Centennial Campaign for The Ethel Walker School is well underway with last year’s completion of Phase I, the Centennial Athletic Fields and Pavilion, and this year’s September Ribbon Cutting for Walker’s new dormitory. The opening of the new dormitory in October completes Phase II of the Campaign. Tucked between existing residence halls Smith and Cluett, Walker’s new colonial style dormitory will house 38 students in suite-style rooms. Students will enjoy cozy common spaces as well as community rooms located throughout the building. At the four corners of the building are family style apartments where house faculty live, welcome students, and oversee residential life. There is no doubt that the completion of the new athletic fields and dormitory benefit the entire School community. With renewed effort and conviction, the Centennial Campaign leaders are now directing their focus to raise funds for the Campaign’s signature structure, the Centennial Center. The Centennial Center will be a state-of-the art facility where academics, athletics, and the social dimension of life at Walker’s converge. The Centennial Center will give Walker’s a

Unrestricted monies given each year to the Fund for Walker’s annual fund are central to our operations and success. In addition, we ask that alumnae and friends generously support the Centennial Campaign through major or planned gifts. 2012-2013 Reunion Awards THE ELIZABETH NASH MUENCH ’55 TRAY

THE TERESE TREMAN WILLIAMS ’55 BOWL

The Elizabeth Nash Muench ’55 Tray is awarded annually to the Reunion class that has achieved the highest level of Annual Fund participation. The tray was given by Letitia McClure Potter ’55 in 1994 in honor of her friend and classmate, Liz, who has served Walker’s in so many capacities over the years. Congratulations to the Reunion Class of 1953 with 58 percent participation for earning the honor of being awarded the tray this year. For 1953, celebrating their 60th Reunion, we thank Roberta Gerstell Bennett, Nancie Magee Bourne, Quarrier Bloch Cook, Susan Kleinhans Gilbertson, Nancy Kitchell Lickle, and Patricia Sudler Stimpson.

The Terese Treman Williams ’55 Bowl is awarded to the Reunion class contributing $75,000 to the Annual Fund. Congratulations to the Class of 1963, celebrating their 50th Reunion, for contributing $85,602 this year in honor of their signature Reunion. We would like to recognize the Class of 1963 Reunion volunteers, Robin Frost Bessin, Suzanne Schroeder Chapman, Susan Barker De Pree and Cythlen Cunningham Maddock for their wonderful leadership this year.

THE LONG DISTANCE AWARD

The Long Distance Award is presented each year to the alumna who, based on her home address, traveled the longest distance to attend Reunion Weekend. The Long Distance Award this year went to Annette Chang, Class of 1998, all the way from Hong Kong.

THE SUN DIAL BOWL

The Sun Dial Bowl is awarded each year to the class with the largest percentage of classmates registered for Reunion Weekend. This year, 18 of the graduates from the Class of 1978 returned to celebrate their 35th Reunion and thus were awarded The Sun Dial Bowl. Many thanks for the dedication and hard work of the Reunion Committee, Anne Crandall Campbell, Helen Hummer Feid, Ashley Lickle O’Neil, Annabelle Reid, Deborah Coward Smicka, and Katharine Swibold, who encouraged their classmates to return to Walker’s for this event.

“I benefitted from scholarship money when I was a student from 1974-1978, so I know how important the gifts we alumnae give to the school are. Giving a stretch gift in a reunion year is something I just do and I give every year in between too. I am not a big donor by any means, but I know that alumnae participation is important for other funders to see, so I give every year!” KATHARINE SWIBOLD ’78 The Class of 1963 received the Terese Treman Williams ’55 Bowl at Reunion, which is awarded to a Reunion Class who gives more than $75,000 to the annual fund.

Senior Class Gift The Class of 2013 enthusiastically embraced their new role as Walker’s alumna and needed no coaching to achieve 100% participation in the Annual Fund. In addition, the Class of 2013 rallied to raise money and donated a Victory Bell to the School. The new bell will be located next to The Centennial Athletic Fields. Be certain that the Victory Bell will ring loud and clear for Walker’s athletic successes for years to come. Hooray! Sunray! Class of 2013!

“This year I decided it was time to ‘give back’ to EWS and help rally the troops for our 35th reunion. With some enthusiasm and encouragement our classmates traveled to Simsbury from California, Montana, Kentucky and even Sweden! We won the largest attendance prize and raised our annual giving this year from 9% to 45%! Our reunion was so much fun and is serving as the catalyst to reunite our class, realizing that ‘old friends are the best friends.’ ” ASHLEY LICKLE O’NEIL ’78 Reunion Committee Volunteer and Class Correspondent

“When I run into other alumnae in New York or anywhere, there is always an instant connection, happiness to see one another, and joy taken in each other’s accomplishments — even if we were not close at School. We all have a wonderful bond, and by supporting the School and the alumnae network, I hope to do my part to help keep those bonds strong.”

The Endowed Funds of The Ethel Walker School The Ethel Walker School is proud to have 61 endowed funds that support the mission of the School. Without these funds, Walker’s would not be able to provide the many enriching opportunities available for students and faculty. We are grateful to all those who established and continue to support these funds. A Better Chance Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1988 to benefit minority students.

The A. Gordon Clarke, Jr. Endowed Campus Revitalization Fund In 1994, to celebrate and recognize 15 years of talent, dedication, impeccable service, efficiency, and constancy as Walker’s Business Manager, A. Gordon Clarke, Jr.’s many friends established this fund. Income from the Fund is used in part to offset the annual budget for repairs, renewals, and special maintenance of the campus and its buildings.

Claudia Aguero ’84 Scholarship Fund Established in 1985 in memory of Claudia Aguero ’84, this scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student. The George I. Alden Scholarship Endowment Established in 1996 after alumnae, parents, and friends helped meet a 3:1 Alden Trust Challenge. The partnership formed between The Alden Trust and supporters of the challenge have helped The Ethel Walker School uphold its tradition of maintaining a diverse student body and ensuring that private education not be limited to only those students with the personal resources to fund their educations.

The Class of 1946 Endowed Educational Enrichment Fund Established by the Class of 1946 on the occasion of its 50th reunion. Recognized by the Class of 1946 as a valuable complement to Walker’s curriculum, income from the Fund is used each year to provide a variety of enrichment programs. For example, income from the endowment may be used to provide the Dean of Students with sufficient funds to invite a guest speaker or entertainer to campus for a special event.

The Constance L. Bell Library Endowment Fund This fund was established by the Bell family primarily to benefit the Constance Lavino Bell Library at The Ethel Walker School. The income from the Fund is used exclusively for the support of the Constance Lavino Bell Library.

The Class of 1952 Endowed Scholarship Fund The Class of 1952 celebrated its 35th Reunion by establishing an endowed scholarship fund in memory of deceased classmates who include Elizabeth Anson, Ann McDonough Capshaw, Marilyn Fuller Casey, June Haley Curtis, Elizabeth Brandes du Pont, Anne Fairburn, Mary Dickinson Herb, Louisa Livingston Kennedy, Elinor Schenck Kurth, Judy Follansbee Lynch, Diana Tailer Pinkham, Maria Lobo Ryan, Lois Spreckels, Alison Bixby Stone, and Daphne Towne Witsell. In doing so, it was their hope that recipients would not only benefit from an outstanding academic experience at Walker’s, but at the same time form bonds that lead to life-long friendships.

The Gertrude J. Berman Flower Fund This fund was established in 1978 by Diane Berman Hoffman and Barbara Berman Levy in memory of their mother Gertrude, grandmother of Carol Hoffman Jason ’75, Barbara Hoffman Siegenfeld ’76, Alyssa Levy ’63, and Mary Jane Levy Dickson ’68, to purchase flowers for Reunion Weekend. The Margaret Huling Bonz Women of Distinction Speakers Series Endowment Fund This fund was established in honor of Margaret Huling Bonz, Head of The Ethel Walker School from 1988 through 1999, for her years of dedication and commitment to the students, faculty and members of The Ethel Walker School community. The Fund will provide the resources for the School to invite annually a woman of distinction to participate in an activity with students and faculty and to give a formal presentation to the School community and invited guests.

The Class of 1962 Lecture Fund This fund was established by the Class of 1962 as their Senior Gift to the School “in the hope that our gift will benefit the academic field and will give not only knowledge but also pleasure to many generations of students.” The Kate Elms Corroon ’65 Endowed Memorial Library Fund Originally established in 1965 by Kate’s family, classmates, and friends. In 1987, on the occasion of her 50th Reunion, Nancy Elms Corroon ’37❖, Kate’s mother, provided the resources for establishing the Fund as a separately endowed fund. Yearly contributions are made to the Fund’s principal. Income from the endowment continues to make a significant impact on the School’s ability to enhance the Bell Library’s collection and technology in support of Walker’s curriculum.

The Diane Brayton Bushby ’47 Memorial Fund This fund was established in 1973 by friends and family for the purpose of purchasing a Steinway concert grand piano. The income from this fund is to be used for the upkeep of the piano.

Thompson Foundation, the Fund provides the resources for students to enjoy more off-campus events which, in the words of the donors, “enhances and solidifies the exceptional classroom experience which The Ethel Walker School offers.”

75th Anniversary Library Endowment Fund During the 75th Anniversary Campaign, funds were solicited for The Library Endowment Fund in order to provide for maintenance of the library in perpetuity. Donors who gave to the 75th Anniversary Campaign were asked to allocate their endowment gifts to one of the following: Faculty Support, Financial Aid, Library Endowment, or General Endowment.

The Ethel Walker School Equestrian Clinic Fund Generously established by an anonymous donor to ensure that riding clinics in the three equestrian disciplines of dressage, jumping, and cross country are made available to all riders regardless of their ability to pay. Income from this endowment will be used to offer visiting clinics free of charge to qualified Walker’s Riding Program students.

50th Anniversary Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1961 by alumnae and friends to honor the School’s 50th anniversary.

The Ethel Walker School Fund for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching Established in April 2010, by a gift from Jane du Pont Kidd, Class of 1957, of Dallas, Texas, to honor a teacher in Science or Mathematics. The income of the Fund is to be used to augment the salary of a teacher in Science or Mathematics. In establishing this fund the strong hope is expressed that others will want to join in the recognition of the teacher chosen to be honored, with the ultimate objective being the establishment of a fully funded chair in Math or Science.

75th Anniversary Scholarship Fund This fund was established by the Class of 1944 to honor the School’s 75th anniversary in 1986.

New Endowed Funds 2012-13

Irene Hixon Whitney Memorial Library Book Fund In recognition of her devotion toward Walker’s, the Class of 1944 established a memorial Fund in honor of Irene Hixon Whitney❖. This thoughtful generosity on the part of classmates permanently endows a named library book fund which will endure as a lasting tribute to Irene. Contributions made to this endowed fund are recognized as gifts to the 75th Anniversary Campaign.

Faculty Professional Development Fund In May of 2013, the Board of Trustees voted to use a portion of the land sale proceeds to increase Walker’s Faculty Professional Development Fund. Income from this fund is available for all teaching faculty on an annual basis to support research needs, professional development, and related travel. The Dean of Studies and Faculty administers the awards.

Albert Williams Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1983 by Mrs. Louise M. Williams❖, mother of Deborah Williams MacKenzie ’55❖, to be awarded to a deserving student.

Global Studies Fund This endowed fund was established in May of 2013 by a generous gift from Lorinda Payson de Roulet ’47, and parent of Whitney A. de Roulet Bullock ’70. The Ethel Walker Heritage Society The Ethel Walker School has been the proud recipient of bequests from many generous alumnae, parents and friends over the years. In today’s uncertain economy, some donors feel the need to hang onto their assets during their lifetime, but are happy to make an impact on The Ethel Walker School through their estate. Ways to remember Walker’s through your estate plans: • • • • • •

Designate a percentage of your estate, or a particular stock, bond, or mutual fund portfolio Bequeath a primary or second home Make Walker’s the beneficiary of your IRA or pension plan Remember Walker’s through a charitable remainder or lead trust After providing for family and friends, designate Walker’s as the residuary beneficiary of your charitable trust or estate Name Walker’s as a contingent beneficiary of an IRA or trust, in the event that certain beneficiaries predecease the donor

“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” ~ Winston Churchill

What is the Heritage Society? The Heritage Society membership allows The Ethel Walker School to honor individuals who have provided for the School through a current planned gift, or who have named Walker’s as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Members may request anonymity.

If you would like to receive additional information regarding: • Including The Ethel Walker School in your Estate Plan • Bequest Intention Acknowledgment Form • Outside Charitable Trust Confirmation Form • Sample bequest language

What is a Bequest Intention versus a Matured Bequest? When a donor has included Walker’s in a will or estate plan during her lifetime this is considered a “bequest intention.” When the donor passes away and The Ethel Walker School receives the bequest from the donor’s estate it is a “matured bequest.”

Please contact: Jane Rae Bradford Director of Gift Planning The Ethel Walker School 230 Bushy Hill Road Simsbury, CT 06070 Phone: 860-408-4260 Email: jbradford@ethelwalker.org

How does a donor document their bequest intention? In order to be a member of The Ethel Walker Heritage Society we ask that the donor contact Walker’s to advise us of their intention. We then encourage the donor to complete our confidential Bequest Intention Acknowledgement Form. (If the donor feels comfortable putting a conservative dollar figure on the form, it may be “counted” in our Centennial Campaign.)
