Message from the Head of School and Chair of the Board of Trustees

It is a privilege and delight to share this report of philanthropy with Walker’s many alumnae, parents and friends. The 2016-17 academic year was one of great accomplishment, punctuated by historic moments in the life of the School, a year in which we launched our leadership partnership, realized the completion of Walker’s Centennial Campaign and celebrated 100 years on the Simsbury campus. In 2011, Walker’s announced its Centennial Campaign — with an ambitious goal to raise $50,000,000. Through the tireless work of our Centennial Committee volunteer leaders and the efforts of then-Head of School Bessie Spears and her staff, stunning outcomes were achieved. The impact of the Centennial Campaign stretches across Walker’s campus. With over $51,000,000 raised through the campaign, we are immensely grateful and proud of all that our donors and supporters have accomplished for our School. Your support is what distinguishes Walker’s and is what will continue to transform this School. Come back, visit and bring a friend — tour the Centennial Center, the renovated barns, see the wonderful new dorm and Debby’s House — and most importantly, talk with the students and faculty who are so appreciative of all that has been accomplished…you will be so proud and thrilled!

All best,

Dr. Meera Viswanathan Katharine “Kit” O’Brien Rohn ’82 Head of School Chair, Board of Trustees

What brought me to this School was the realization that the years between 12 and 18 are the most formative for girls to develop a strong voice, sense of self and awareness of their potential. Walker’s does all this and more for young women by allowing them to develop and become comfortable in their own skin even while expanding their horizons intellectually and interpersonally through outstanding teaching and learning with a first-rate faculty, innovative programming that is in touch with our changing world, and the strong commitment to community and social justice. The focus at Walker’s is on girls as thinkers and doers. In the words of Drew Gilpin Faust, the 28th President of Harvard University, ‘We educate women because it is smart. We educate women because it changes the world.’ Walker’s women are change-makers.

2016–2017 REPORT OF PHILANTHROPY |

So much lies ahead for our School. Women’s philanthropy and women’s leadership is shaping our world. Walker’s is a jewel in the landscape of learning — and it will continue to be burnished only through reinvestment and support of our alumnae, parents and friends. Our alumnae community, which today numbers over 4,000, is Ethel Walker Smith’s legacy. Your involvement in the life of our School is so meaningful and appreciated. The engagement of alumnae and parents in the lives of students and faculty in all that Walker’s is becoming will define and sustain our future.

2016-2017 Reunion Awards SUNDIAL BOWL

The Sundial Bowl is awarded each year to the class with the largest percentage of classmates registered for Reunion Weekend. In 2017, the Class of 1982 won the Sundial Bowl with 24 classmates, or 30% of the class, in attendance for Reunion Weekend! Hooray Sunray, Class of 1982!

Katharine O’Brien Rohn ’82 THE MARGOT TREMAN ROSE ’80 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNAE AWARD

Katharine (Kit) O’Brien Rohn ’82 has served the Walker’s community for many years in various capacities, including as current chair of the Board of Trustees, as a former member of the Alumnae Board, and co-chair of the most recent head search committee. In introducing Kit for the award, fellow board member Harriet Blees Dewey ’60, P’86, the 2016 winner of the award, said “[Kit] is genuinely curious about the world she finds herself in…each day she follows her passions; she is a doer and she values commitment. She is a team player, a play maker and a leader. One could say, ‘a pied piper.’ Most importantly, she has a deep understanding of the importance of giving back.” Kit has an endless reserve of energy, enthusiasm and passion about Walker’s. Whether traveling the country with Head of School Meera Viswanathan to meet with alumnae in various cities or while on campus managing board activities or meeting with faculty and staff to learn more about the everyday lives of our current students, Kit consistently brings a level of energy to her work that is unparalleled. Her passion and commitment to do important work on behalf of every member of the Walker’s community is palpable to all who work alongside her.

The Margot Treman Rose ’80 Distinguished Alumnae Award is The Ethel Walker School’s highest honor given to Walker’s graduates. It is presented to graduates of the School who best exemplify Margot Rose’s attributes, ensuring that her work, dedication, and influence will be remembered now and always. When awarded, it will honor alumnae who, by their devotion and talent, elevate the work of their profession, who influence their community, or who give extraordinary service to their School. The award has been endowed in Margot’s honor by her mother, Terese Treman Williams ’55, and her stepfather, Joseph Williams

The Ethel Walker Heritage Society The Ethel Walker Heritage Society was established to celebrate and honor those women and men who have chosen to make gifts to The Ethel Walker School through a bequest. Throughout Walker’s long history, bequest gifts have been the largest source of investment income to the School. Ethel Walker’s personal philanthropy through planned giving reflects this generosity of spirit. She has been an extraordinary benefactor to the School having shaped the School with her vision from its founding moments and now into perpetuity. Her demonstration of planning for the future helped to realize her philanthropic ambitions. It is a fitting tribute that our planned giving society bears her name. We invite other alumnae, parents and friends to share in Ethel Walker’s ambitions and commitment to an extraordinary education for girls and consider joining her and many others by creating a planned gift.
