Message from the Head of School

The academic and fiscal year of 2021-2022 reflected the very best of our community: our ability to respond to challenges with creative, thoughtful solutions; our faculty’s profound commitment to each and every student; and the dedication our alumnae, parents, and friends demonstrated to our mission by standing behind us with a robust show of support through volunteerism and generous philanthropy.

The most remarkable philanthropic highlight of the year was an extraordinary unrestricted donation of $25,000,000 to Walker’s by an anonymous alumna and her spouse. This marks a watershed moment for our school as we continue efforts to fortify the endowment and plan for campus improvements—including the construction of a new residential building.

As girls and women face heightened challenges affecting their global human rights, the Walker’s community is responding with courage and resolve. We ended our academic year with a glorious and sunny outdoor Commencement ceremony attended by hundreds of our graduates’ family and friends. It represented a return to pre-COVID-19 life and, for me, an affirmation of the strength, resilience and joy that exists at our beloved school.

Thank you for being an essential member of our Walker’s family and for your continued role in our bold future.

With respect and gratitude,

Message from the Assistant Head for Advancement

Here on campus, our year was highlighted by countless kind gestures of support from our alumnae, parents, and extended family. We have been buoyed by your generous, caring spirit and enthusiastic engagement.

As our ability to gather in person grew, we enjoyed wonderful attendance at in-person events for Family Weekend, the dedication of the Linda Payson de Roulet ’47, P’70 Outdoor Equestrian Show Ring, off-site gatherings throughout the country, and a return to Reunion on campus. It was a year of extraordinary philanthropy, including a powerful collective effort to achieve a $1,000,000 challenge match that was directed to Walker’s endowment from a generous alumna.

Your annual support empowers Walker’s to initiate and sustain outstanding programs like our Visiting Writer Seminar, where twice a year a distinguished author is in residence for a week. With celebrated contemporary writers teaching

their craft at Walker’s, students are learning in an experience akin to one found in a university or college setting. Your Annual Fund gift is helping our teachers refine their teaching methods and train other faculty members. This is a place of dynamic pedagogy and the Annual Fund fuels professional development and excellence among these master teachers.

The successes of our students and alumnae bear witness to the relevance of girls’ education. We are so grateful for our thoughtful and generous community for making so much possible for this generation of Walker’s students.

With profound gratitude,

Transformational $25,000,000 Gift!

The Ethel Walker School received an extraordinary gift of $25,000,000 from an anonymous donor. It sets the record as the largest gift in the School’s history and is one of the most generous gifts made to an allgirls school in the country. “This gift is a statement about the confidence that this donor has in our school,” says Dr. Meera Viswanathan, Head of School. “This donor’s generous support allows us to grow our endowment significantly and assists us in undertaking transformative capital projects to enhance the experience of students and faculty, and the school’s already beautiful campus.”

Giving Societies

Each and every member of our donor community is essential. Their gifts in Fiscal Year 2021-2022 to the Annual Fund for Walker’s, capital projects, and endowments make our current programs and future plans a reality, for which we are most grateful.

Copper Beech Society

Copper Beech Society members are donors who have pledged to give $100,000 or more to Walker’s over three years. The Society was formed in 2019.

It Was a Sunny Year!

Each year, our spirit clubs engage in a playful competition to raise money for the Annual Fund — we call it the Sundial Challenge. Alums, parents of all generations, students, and staff make a gift during a two-week period in honor of their spirit club — the Suns or the Dials. Together, the Suns and the Dials raised a grand total of $153,096, which also activated an additional $100,000 match! It was the Suns who came out on top this year with a total of 66 gifts. The Dials were not far behind with a total of 63 gifts. Hooray Sunray!

Spotlight on Dorothy “Dottie” Hirsch Loebl ’45: 70+ Years of Friendships and Consecutive Giving!

When Dottie arrived at Walker’s from New York City as a freshman in the fall of 1941, no one could have imagined that the bombing of Pearl Harbor would occur just three months later. The effects of the war on people in the United States made the Class of 1945’s experiences at Walker’s unique in so many ways. Dottie says “Rations on gasoline and limited access to railroad tickets (reserved for those in the service) meant that we did not leave campus for long stretches of time. We spent Thanksgivings on campus and weekend excursions to football games or family homes were just not allowed. As a result, we spent A LOT of time with each other and became very close. We experienced the strains of war and the loss of loved ones together. It was a challenging time.” Those friendships grew deeper during the next three years at Walker’s and beyond with frequent reunions both on and off campus.

At that time, campus buildings included Beaver Brook on one side of Bushy Hill Road, and across the street were the horse barns, Phelps House (known then as the Teacher’s Cottage) where faculty resided, and the Old Cluett up on the hill where Dottie and her classmates lived their senior year. Dottie recalls that “We looked forward to our senior year in Cluett with anticipation. Seniors were quite revered in those days, and we were expected to set an example for the younger students.” As the elected President of the Student Body, Dottie did her best to fulfill those expectations.

After graduating from Vassar College and receiving a Master’s Degree from Stanford University in Physiology, Dottie worked in cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City and later at the University of California Berkeley. When she married her husband, Jim, Dottie lived in Sacramento and then Ojai, California, where they raised their three children.

Since graduating from Walker’s, and for the past 70+ years, Dottie has been a consistent donor to the Annual Fund for Walker’s. Her long-standing support is inspired by “the excellent education I received and the lifelong friends I made during my Walker’s years.”

Consecutive donors to Walker’s are as revered as the seniors were by the underclass students during Dottie’s years at Walker’s. Thank you for your dedication and commitment!

Reunion 2022

This past June, Walker's celebrated its first on-campus reunion since May of 2020. Class years ending in 2 and 7 came back to campus to reunite with former classmates and reconnect with campus spaces from their past –including dorm rooms where over 100 alumnae spent the weekend! With attending alumnae from the Class of 1947 to the Class of 2017, there was a diverse mix of women reunited over their common love of Walker’s. The weekend featured a plethora of different events such as master classes, reunion Chapel, a progressive dinner that unveiled the Campus Master Plan, and an alumnae favorite, the Ba-Na-Na. Reunion 2022 allowed Walker’s women of all ages to reminisce about what Walker’s used to mean to them when they were a student while envisioning the future directions of the School.

2021–2022 Reunion Awards

THE MARGOT TREMAN ROSE ’80 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNAE AWARD

The Margot Treman Rose ’80 Distinguished Alumnae Award is The Ethel Walker School’s highest honor given to Walker’s graduates. When awarded, it honors alumnae who, by their devotion and talent, elevate the work of their profession; who influence their community; or who give extraordinary service to their School. The award has been endowed in Margot’s honor by her mother, Terese Treman Williams ’55, and her stepfather, Joseph Williams. Congratulations to our 2022 recipient, Cynthia Anderson-Barker ’72!

Why Give?

“I support Walker’s because it is the best philanthropic investment I can make. We are a beacon in girls’ education, graduating thousands of young women who are confident and capable to lead industries, inspire other women to soar, and be engaged citizens of the world. Our donations allow the next generation of Walker’s graduates to continue this tradition. Please join me in keeping Walker’s a thriving place of learning and opportunity!”

We Met Our Parent Giving Challenge!

Our parent community is an essential partner in everything we do at Walker’s and the Annual Fund is no different. Parent giving hit an all-time high of 77%, responding enthusiastically to a giving challenge made possible by Trustee Jean Moore Edwards ’69. Jean offered to contribute an additional $75,000 to the Annual Fund when parent participation hit 75%. Challenge met! Parents contributed $200,000 to the Annual Fund, and exceeded the 75% threshold. Hooray Sunray!

Parent and Grandparent Annual Fund Donors

Each year the parents of students, parents of alumnae, and grandparents of students and alumnae show their support of The Ethel Walker School through generous gifts. Their appreciation of the School affirms our mission and ensures the continuation of the excellence of a Walker’s education.

Fall Golf Outing

The Athletics Department and our parent community teamed up to run a successful golf outing in conjunction with Family Weekend 2021. The Golf Club of Avon hosted the fun event attended by over 100 guests and $50,000 was raised to support our athletic programs. Jenny Belknap ’90 spoke at the dinner, sharing how the discipline and drive necessary for success as a leader in the corporate world was fostered at Walker’s where she learned to balance her academic, athletic, and leadership roles and priorities. Jenny is Senior Vice President of Enterprise Marketing and Portfolio Strategy, North America, at The Estée Lauder Company.

2021–2022 Advancement Volunteers

No fundraising program can succeed without the dedication of its volunteers. Alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends of The Ethel Walker School once again joined together to ensure the realization of our 2021-2022 goals. To each and every one, we extend a heartfelt thank you.

The Ethel Walker Heritage Society

The Ethel Walker Heritage Society celebrates and honors those women and men who have chosen to make gifts to The Ethel Walker School through a bequest or other legacy giving, including life insurance and remainder trusts. Throughout Walker’s long history, planned gifts have been the largest source of investment income to the School. Ethel Walker Smith’s personal philanthropy through planned giving reflects this generosity of spirit. She has been an extraordinary benefactor to the School, having shaped the School with her vision from its founding moments and now into perpetuity. Her demonstration of planning for the future helped to realize her philanthropic ambitions. It is a fitting tribute that our planned giving society bears her name. We invite alumnae, parents and friends to share in Ethel Walker Smith’s ambitions and commitment to an extraordinary education for girls and consider joining her and many others by creating a planned gift.

As with all good things, our charitable giving options improve with age. The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers age 70½ or older to make taxfree charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from an Individual Retirement Accounts to Walker’s. These qualified charitable distributions can fulfill an individual’s required minimum distribution. Gifts postmarked by December 31 will qualify as a qualified charitable distribution for that year. Please contact your IRA plan administrator for instructions on initiating a gift to Walker’s. (Walker’s Tax ID: 06-0689699)

Planning Your Gift to Walker’s

Ways To Give To Walker’s

At the heart of Walker’s mission is our commitment to prepare students to make a difference in their world. Whether you’re an alumna, parent, employee, or friend of the School, you know that service to others and a philanthropic spirit are central to who we are and what we do, but we can’t do what we do without you.

When you give to Walker’s, you participate in something bigger than all of us: a tradition of philanthropy that spans generations of Walker’s women, their loved ones, and countless friends and supporters. Whatever method is best for you, we thank you for making Walker’s a philanthropic priority.

We are here to help facilitate your giving. Please reach out to us at any time about making gifts via check, credit card, stock, cash wire, in-kind, IRA rollover, or planned giving.
