Grieving mother shares son’s story, urges organ donations

LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Former Etobicoke resident Rob Marks, the kind of guy who could light up a room, got five extra years of life before his untimely death last fall thanks to the generosity of a double lung donor, his grieving mom says. The eldest of four children, Marks’ battles in life started the day he was born with the discovery of a club foot, Colleen Donovan said. Despite many illnesses, he was misdiagnosed until he was a teenager. “Despite his ongoing illnesses, he loved and excelled at skateboarding, bike riding and competitive hockey,” Donovan said in an email to The Guardian. “At the age of 16, we were devastated to learn that he had cystic fibrosis. The damage to his lungs was already extensive.” Saying her son was blessed with charm, humour and an indomitable spirit, Donovan said he pursued activities he could enjoy without struggling to breathe – everything related to cars, music, poker and movies. On Feb. 25. 2005, Marks received a successful double lung transplant. “His recovery was remarkable and miraculous. He was elated to be able to breathe again and for five years, he lived life to the fullest and had fun making up for lost time,” >>>ONLY, page 5

Legion still needs $10K to fix roof ‘Replacing the roof, renting the facilities is vital to our survival’: official TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Royal Canadian Legion Branch 286 still needs a few good men and women — armed with $10,000 in donations — to urgently replace its badly damaged roof. Torrential downpours earlier this summer forced officials to cancel numerous events booked in its two halls, which combined, can accommodate 400 people. Cancelled events meant lost revenues, which are critical to the north Etobicoke legion’s financial

survival, said Brian Johnston, the legion’s public affairs officer. “We’re in desperate need of roof replacement,” Johnston said. “There’s no way in the world we would be able to operate unless we use the rental facilities. “Membership fees — we retain $18 of the $55 fee — don’t come close to covering the cost of running the building. “Replacing the roof and renting the facilities is vital to our survival.” Last month, legion officials launched a Replace Our Roof cam-

paign to raise the $25,000 needed to replace the flat, leaking roof on the Irwin Road red brick building. A Replace Our Roof fundraiser held last weekend, combined with public donations to date, put a big dent in the fundraising campaign, but nearly $10,000 remains to be raised, Johnston reported. Dreams come true for Dorothy finalists Two Etobicoke teens compete in CBC TV show to play role in Lloyd Webber production TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com

t’s not Oz, but it’s an equally magical, “lifechanging” experience for two Etobicoke School of the Arts’ musical theatre students. The pair is vying for the role of Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Canadian production of The Wizard of Oz opening at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in downtown Toronto this December. Malindi Ayienga, 16, and Jessie Munro, 18, are among 20 finalists following a Canada-wide audition tour set to potentially compete next month in CBC Television’s live competition series, Over the Rainbow. The two-hour series premiere features an audition tour documentary, followed by the first performance, on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. Over the Rainbow then airs every Sunday at 8 p.m. as the girls battle it out singing a mix of Broadway and pop songs. Canadians vote for their favourite Dorothy online after each show. The bottom two Dorothys determined by the online vote then faceoff with one girl saved from elimination by the judges in half-hour results’ episodes airing every Monday at 8 p.m. Ultimately, the coveted role-winning Dorothy will be chosen by Canadians. “It was so exciting. I couldn’t really believe it. I was in shock,” Munro said of being chosen a top 20 Dorothy finalist after singing Over the Rainbow. “Malindi and I started crying, hugging. I don’t think I’ve fully processed it yet.” First, Ayienga and Munro must impress Over the

Rainbow staff next week with their musical theatre work at Dorothy’s Farm. CBC released few details to finalists or the media about the ‘farm’ where the top 20 finalists will compete to capture one of 10 spots on Over the Rainbow. Munro’s grandmother played piano and taught her the iconic song, Over the Rainbow, when she was a little girl. “It’s a dream come true,”

Munro said of her shot to play Dorothy through the TV show. “It’s not something you expect to happen. It’s overwhelming to be a part of it. I feel so excited and so, so blessed. To have the opportunity to perform with these girls on that kind of stage with the amazing show staff, it’s incredible. I’m excited about what the experience will bring, excited to grow, to be the

best performer I can be. Everyone is going to be doing their best.” Close friends, Munro and Ayienga performed together in a women’s choir, as well as Etobicoke School of the Arts’ (ESA) SPLASH show choir, which won gold this year at Showchoir Canada. Munro played Jets’ Graziella this year in ESA’s West Side Story, while Ayienga played the Sharks’

Rosalia. Munro also played Mimi in an ESA production of Rent. Ayienga has been habitually watching the British version of Over the Rainbow, which chose Dorothy for Lloyd Webber’s London theatrical production of the 1939 classic film, in an effort to prepare for her own Dorothy bid. “I’m so, so excited for this experience. I’m going to be working with the best

of the best, and with girls who love doing what I love doing. It will be amazing.” Both girls mention Stephanie Gorin, the renowned casting director, by name. “To have the opportunity to be known by somebody so powerful in the industry, it’s awesome,” Ayienga said. Munro’s father, who has worked with Gorin on films, told his daughter Gorin is “the” casting director for movies, TV and theatre. “At my audition, (Gorin) said, ‘I’ve seen you on YouTube.’ What? I was completely in awe that Stephanie Gorin has seen me on YouTube. To work with her is incredible.” The girls credit ESA with preparing them for auditions and for professional singing, dancing and acting roles. Ayienga’s Mom, Nicole, couldn’t contain her excitement at her daughter’s first audition outside school. “When she got the Golden Ticket — I’m really not a screamer — but there was a frantically screaming woman in the room. Oh, it was me. I’m really, really happy for her.” Ayienga called the opportunity to play Dorothy “absolutely lifechanging.” “It would not only be a great job, it would be the beginning of a career. It would be a huge, huge deal.” Munro hopes to return the “rush” to the Canadian Over the Rainbow viewers that she gets when watching performers live on stage if she makes it to compete on the TV show. “This is something we’ll never forget. I’m really excited to grow from this experience. This is once in a lifetime.”

Our police budget must be discussed in communities

ike a broken record, the loop that is the Toronto Police Service budget is coming around again. Wednesday’s police board meeting has raised the budget spectre once again. Reaction – on both sides – sounds very much like it did last year. The debate between city hall and the police service around how much money it takes to protect the City of Toronto comes up every year. This time, Police Chief Bill Blair has warned there could be layoffs; and the city’s budget chief, Councillor Mike Del Grande, is musing about an indeour view pendent study justifying the about-5,600 officers currently Give residents employed. Wrangling between politia say on where cians and police does nothing to solve the issues faced by dollars are spent communities affected by violence, gangs, guns and drugs. All it does, if anything at all, is create Band-Aid solutions without speaking with those most affected by the problems. Given the spate of gun violence in Toronto recently, we suggest police budgets should not be discussed solely by politicians and police. The conversation must be in the community first. Councillors should seek to engage directly with their constituents on this issue specifically. Only that way will a truer picture emerge of the local impact of the resources currently being applied. Those conversations will generate a pathway for future resource application. The Danzig Street shooting has spurred politicians to hold community forums and town halls. Leaders in the Scarborough community shaken by the violence have also taken up the mantle as well. But the reality is these forums, although very beneficial, go nowhere without continued and consistent interaction between the community and the police. In a perfect world, money would be no object. With civic budget restraint already reflected in communities across the city, how the money spent on the police budget should be scrutinized – just like any other department’s. Frank discussions are needed. The result may be that we find out certain areas of the city may need less of a police presence than others. The result may be that officers need to be re-deployed to other neighbourhoods. Perhaps more initiatives are needed – like the school resource officer program where the community gets to the know police officers. Regardless, police interaction with the community should be more direct and compassionate – and efficient. Giving the community a say will provide a better picture over where those dollars should be spent. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Some thoughts about the coming fall

he arrival of rainy days of the type we have not seen for far too long appears to have heralded a change of season. Since then there has been a shift in the weather and you can almost smell a hint of fall in the air. The days are getting cooler, the air conditioners are being turned off, and covers are definitely returning for comfortable nighttime sleeping. There are also signs of the upcoming political changes taking place this fall. Along with the days becoming shorter and the leaves falling from the trees, we will soon be seeing politicians returning to their various levels of government. While most people are still in relaxed summer mode, there is a definite grumpiness amongst politicians who have been frustrated with the polarized state of politics. It will be interesting to see whether that feeling of discontent will translate into reaching some sort of compromise or more talk of elections. At this point nobody wants to talk about elections as the economy is still too fragile to see a big

change in government at any level. Likewise, it is apparent the people of Ontario are not willing to have conservatives in power at both the federal and provincial levels of government. The real issue everyone is watching is whether the global economic changes taking place will have repercussions in Canada. At this time the economic market is acting more like a pinball machine where the economy is bouncing off one crisis after another in an almost random manner. When stock market conditions change this quickly, all predictive financial indicators simply stop working. All we can do now is to wait and see where the market settles and if all goes well, the landing will be relatively soft. Unfortunately, economists are trying to decide which “R” word to use for the next fiscal quarter:

recovery or recession. By September we may be facing some very important questions regarding trends in employment, economic growth and property values for the next year. No matter the rhetoric that will be flung about by different political parties, the only real issue for most people will be either keeping the job they have, or finding one. Let’s see how the province fares as we pass through this unsettled time with two decades of cutbacks in government services behind us. More cuts may appeal to those ideologically inclined to see such policies as improvements. However, they have not translated into either jobs or prosperity in either Toronto or the province. Maybe it’s time to start considering a policy of properly investing in the economy through a reformed taxation system where everyone pays their fair share without exception. n Joe Cooper is a long-time Toronto resident and community activist. So if you copy a news article headline and summary – with a link to the full version – and post it to your blog or website, you haven’t violated Canada’s online copyright laws. Social media makes it too easy to just share website links on Facebook, tweet research on Twitter or embed another’s YouTube video. But this online content costs owners time, resources and money to create and publish. A blogger or web publisher should still follow a few basic rules when using content from an Internet news site or other online source on their own. At the very least, the date, name of publication and title (with a link) of an Internet article must be included in the body of a blog post. A direct quote from an online news story should include a full citation to it at the bottom of a blogger’s article: just like a university student must do to show their sources for a research paper. A Google Internet search makes it easy to find an image or logo to embed – or link to – within a blog post. But if an image or logo is trademarked, a blog owner should obtain per mis sion from its owner before including it in their own blog article. Tom Wolfer

Only 12 per cent of residents from Etobicoke registered as organ donors The GTA has a lower percentage of registered donors than any region in Ontario, according to the Ontario Trillium Gift of Life Network. With only 12 per cent of Etobicoke residents registering to be organ donors, the community has one of the worst rates in the province. Just over 66,000 Ontario residents, or 22 per cent, have agreed to donate their organs and tissues after death by registering at www.BeADonor. ca More than 1,500 people in Ontario are on a waiting list for an organ. On average, one of them dies every three days, Gift of Life president Ronnie Gavsie said. One donor can save up to eight lives and improve the lives of as many as 75 others. As many as one in four Ontario residents mistakenly believe they are registered donors because they have signed a paper donation card,

but those cards are often ineffective because they can’t be located when needed, Gavsie said. Also, families are much more likely to agree to donate a loved one’s organs if they know the person has taken the time to register as a donor, she added. Donovan knows the difference organ donation can make to recipients and their families. “No words can ever express our gratitude for the unselfish gift that the donor’s family gave to Rob during their own time of grief,” she said. “ This selfless family gave Rob five phenomenal, energetic, years filled with socializing, laughing, dancing, exercising, living and breathing. He exercised vigorously, lifted weights, skated, socialized, laughed, danced and did many of the things that cystic fibrosis had previously prevented him from doing.” Sadly, Marks was diagnosed in 2010 with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer. Although he beat the disease, his lungs “took a terrible beating” from the treatment and he was put back on the transplant list on the condition he remain cancer-free for a year, Donovan said. Unfortunately, Marks died at the age of 31 last Sept. 16 before receiving another transplant. Donovan hopes sharing her son’s story will encourage people to become organ donors. Her plea comes just a after the provincial agency responsible for managing the system called attention to low registration rates in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

While there’s not much parents can do about tuition, there are ways to save on additional expenses, including clothing. Restocking a student’s wardrobe can be costly, but savvy Moms and Dads can lessen the blow in a variety of ways. Although students may not yet be ready to head back to class, both parents and children may not be looking forward to school shopping for a number of reasons. Expenses: Shopping for school items can be a big expense, one that’s especially tough to handle after paying for a summer vacation. Time: Crowded stores can make shopping stressful, especially when kids (and adults) would rather be spending time elsewhere. Intimidation: Facing a store full of stocked racks and shelves can make even the most avid shopper feel a little anxious. Whether school shopping is fun or feared, it’s a necessity for

parents and kids alike. Here are eight tips to make the process a bit easier and help parents save money as well. 1. Assess what is already on hand. Shopping doesn’t have to mean creating an entirely new wardrobe from scratch. It often means supplementing existing clothing with new pieces that can make things look fresh. Unless a child has entirely outgrown pants and shirts from last year, chances are there will be a number of pieces that are still usable and appropriate. Take a day or two to go through kids’ wardrobes and set aside items that can be used for school. Make a list of new items to purchase. 2. Establish a budget. Set a limit as to how much will be spent on each child and don’t stray over that limit. Around $150 to $200 may be adequate to pick up a few basics. Taking out cash from the bank and spending only what is in hand may make shoppers less likely to overspend or turn to credit cards for purchases.
